100 days to go: Can Canada's Paralympic team surpass Sochi success? https://briefnews.eu/100-days-to-go-can-canadas-paralympic-team-surpass-sochi-success/ https://briefnews.eu/100-days-to-go-can-canadas-paralympic-team-surpass-sochi-success/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 15:23:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/100-days-to-go-can-canadas-paralympic-team-surpass-sochi-success/

The 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea are officially 100 days away, and Canadian sports fans have plenty to look forward to in March. The Games run from March 9-18 and will be streamed on CBC Sports.

Canada finished third in the medal standings at the 2014 Games in Sochi, earning 16 medals — including seven gold. Biathlete Brian McKeever earned three of those gold medals and is returning for his fifth Paralympics.

What else can Canadians expect from the country’s Paralympians? Here’s a look at the sports, storylines and stars to watch out for:

Sports to watch

The upcoming Paralympics feature six sports:

  • Para ice hockey (formerly sledge hockey).
  • Wheelchair curling.
  • Para alpine skiing.
  • Para snowboard.
  • Para cross-country skiing.
  • Para biathlon.

Canada earned at least one medal in five of those six sports in Sochi: para snowboarding, which was under the umbrella of para alpine in 2014, was the lone exception.

John Leslie was Canada’s top finisher in the debut sport, placing seventh in the snowboard cross event. The snowboard program will expand from two to 10 events at these Games.

Para snowboarder John Leslie is driven by sport3:08

Within Winter Paralympic sports, there are classifications for athletes with leg impairments, arm impairments, combined impairments in arms and legs, visual impairments and sit-skiers in the alpine and Nordic events. For example, Mark Arendz — who lost his arm in a farming accident as a child — competes in the standing category for biathlon; the sport also has sitting events and events for athletes with visual impairments.

Storylines to follow

There will inevitably be shocking upsets, photo finishes and the inevitable fallout from the ongoing Russian doping scandal at these Games. For now, here are some storylines that are worth keeping an eye on as the countdown continues.

Curling four-peat? Canada has won every Paralympic curling gold since its inception in 2006, but the world’s fourth-ranked rink faces stiff competition from Russia, China and Norway.

Hockey’s golden drought. It’s been nearly 12 years since Canada last won gold in Torino, back when current captain Greg Westlake was a teenager and 2018 chef de mission Todd Nicholson was captain. The rival United States have won back-to-back Paralympic gold in the interim.

Canada’s Nordic duo. McKeever and Arendz are stars in their own right, and both are expected to contend for individual medals in cross-country in biathlon. There is, however, the possibility that the two could join forces in an open relay event, like the historic bronze they won with Emily Young and McKeever’s guide Graham Nishikawa at the world championships in February.

Notable names

Canada is sending approximately 55 athletes to Pyeongchang, and here are some names to watch once the Games begin:

Alpine skier Mac Marcoux won three medals, including giant slalom gold, at his debut Paralympics in 2014 as a 16-year-old. Marcoux, along with current guide Jack Leitch, is a multiple-medal favourite heading into Pyeongchang.

Westlake returns to lead Canada’s hockey team, with young forwards like Liam Hickey complementing veterans Billy Bridges and Adam Dixon in coach Ken Babey’s uptempo system. The team still needs to finalize its roster, including a tough decision in goal between “1A and 1B” netminders Dominique Larocque and Corbin Watson.

While Canada’s curlers have yet to be confirmed for the Games, the quartet from the 2017 world championships brings plenty of Paralympic pedigree to the sheets. Jim Armstrong and Ina Forrest won gold in 2010 and 2014, with Mark Ideson winning in 2014; third Marie Wright rounds out a potential rink.

In snowboarding, Leslie is expected to be back for another shot at the podium, and he’ll likely be joined by Michelle Salt and Alex Massie, who are coming off of strong seasons ahead of the Games.

Voice and facial recognition could help AI surpass humans in emotional intelligence https://briefnews.eu/voice-and-facial-recognition-could-help-ai-surpass-humans-in-emotional-intelligence/ https://briefnews.eu/voice-and-facial-recognition-could-help-ai-surpass-humans-in-emotional-intelligence/#respond Sun, 15 Oct 2017 23:06:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/voice-and-facial-recognition-could-help-ai-surpass-humans-in-emotional-intelligence/

I have studied emotional intelligence as a hobby for a long time. Until recently, I believed emotional intelligence would remain one of the core advantages of us humans after artificial intelligence takes over all tasks requiring memorization and logic.

Over the past few years, I’ve focused my studies on emotionally intelligent algorithms, as it is the business of my startup, Inbot.

The more I have researched them, the more convinced I have become that people are no longer ahead of AI in terms of emotional intelligence.

Do you have an AI strategy — or hoping to get one? Check out VB Summit on October 23-24 in Berkeley, a high-level, invite-only AI event for business leaders.

Yuval Noah Harari writes in his best-selling book Homo Deus that humans are essentially a collection of biological algorithms shaped by millions of years of evolution. He continues to claim that there is no reason to think that non-organic algorithms couldn’t replicate and surpass everything that organic algorithms can do.

The same is echoed by Max Tegmark in his book Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. He makes a compelling case that practically all intelligence is substrate independent.

Let that sink in for a moment. Our emotions and feelings are organic algorithms that respond to our environment. Algorithms, that are shaped by our cultural history, upbringing and life experiences. And they can be reverse engineered.

If we agree with Dr. Harari, who is a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Dr. Tegmark, who is a professor at MIT in Boston, computers will eventually become better at manipulating human emotions than humans themselves.

People are generally not emotionally intelligent

In real life situations, we are actually pretty bad at emotional intelligence.

Most of us are ignorant about even the most basic emotional triggers we set off in others. We end up in pointless fights, dismiss good arguments because they go against our biases, and judge people based on stereotypes.

We don’t understand the effects of cultural context, family upbringing or the current personal life situation of our discussion partner.

We rarely try to put ourselves in the other person’s position. We don’t try to understand their reasoning if it goes against our worldview. We don’t want to challenge our biases or prejudices.

Online, the situation is much worse. We draw hasty and often mistaken conclusions from comments by people we don’t know at all and lash at them if we believe their point goes against our biases.

Lastly, we have an evolutionary trait of seeing life as the “survival of the fittest.” This predisposes us from taking advantage of others, to focus on boosting our egos, and to put ourselves on a pedestal.

The most successful people often lie to gain an advantage, manipulate to get ahead, and deceive to hide their wrongdoings. It’s about winning at all costs, causing a lot of emotional damage on the way.

AI is advancing rapidly at emotional intelligence

While us humans continue to struggle to understand each other, emotionally intelligent AI has advanced rapidly.

Cameras in phones are ubiquitous and omnipresent, and face-tracking software is already advanced enough to analyze the smallest details of our facial expressions. The most advanced ones can even tell fake emotions apart from real emotions.

Voice recognition and natural language processing algorithms are also getting better at figuring out our sentiment and emotional state from the audio.

The technologies to analyze emotional responses from faces and voice are already way beyond the skills of an average human, and in many areas exceed the abilities of even the most skilled humans.

Artificial Intelligence can look at our faces to recognize such private qualities as your sexual orientation, political leaning, or IQ.

While AI can decipher almost any emotion from your face or speech, we have yet to put a lot of effort into the scientific study of emotionally intelligent AIs.

The advances in this field are currently almost solely driven by commercial interests and human greed.

Media and entertainment companies need our attention and engagement to make money. Companies like Facebook and YouTube have a large number of engineers working to create ever better ways to addict us to their content.

I wrote about this in earlier in a short post named The worrying growth of the business of addiction.

These algorithms are designed to pull our emotional triggers to keep us entertained. And they have become very, very good at it.

Some of the core developers of these algorithms have become frightened of the power technology has over us, and say our minds can be hijacked.

Big data gives an edge to emotionally intelligent AIs

Unlike people, AI can leverage your whole online history, which in most cases, is more information than anybody can remember about any of their friends.

Some of the most advanced machine learning algorithms developed at Facebook and Google have already been applied on a treasure trove of data from billions of people.

These algorithms already know what your desires, biases and emotional triggers are, based on your communication, friends and cultural context. In many areas, they understand you better than you understand yourself.

The progress of algorithms has gone so far that Facebook and Google are now accused of creating filter bubbles that can affect public opinion, rapidly change political landscapes, and sway elections.

These algorithms are getting so complex that they are becoming impossible to fully control by humans. Facebook’s chief of security Alex Stamos recently tweeted that journalists are unfairly accusing them of manipulation when in reality there are no solutions available that wouldn’t lead to someone accusing them of bias.

The future of emotional artificial intelligence

People have a lot of biases, which cloud our judgment. We see the world as we wish it to be, not as it is. Algorithms today, being made by people, incorporate some hints of our biases too. But if we wanted to remove such biases, it would be relatively easy to do so.

As artificial intelligence gets better at manipulating us, I see a future where people happily submit their lives to the algorithms. We can already see it in practice. Just look around yourself in public — almost everyone is glued to their smartphones. People touch their phones an average 2,617 times a day, which is an indicator a future controlled by technology is fast approaching. It’s likely we’ll soon see a day where the roles switch and artificial intelligence uses humans as organic bots to realize its goals.

China held a massive military parade showing off its might — and it could surpass the US by 2030 https://briefnews.eu/china-held-a-massive-military-parade-showing-off-its-might-and-it-could-surpass-the-us-by-2030/ https://briefnews.eu/china-held-a-massive-military-parade-showing-off-its-might-and-it-could-surpass-the-us-by-2030/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 14:49:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-held-a-massive-military-parade-showing-off-its-might-and-it-could-surpass-the-us-by-2030/ Xi Jinping military parade camoCCTV

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday presided over a massive military parade from an open-topped jeep, declaring, “The world is not peaceful and peace needs to be defended.”

And as China’s show of force demonstrates, Beijing may have the will and the strength to replace the US as the world’s defender of peace.

“Our heroic military has the confidence and capabilities to preserve national sovereignty, security and interests … and to contribute more to maintaining world peace,” Xi said at the parade, just one day after President Donald Trump lashed out at Beijing for its inaction in thwarting North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

China’s massive military modernization and increasing assertiveness has irked many of it’s neighbors in the region, and even as a the US attempts to reassure its allies that US power still rules the day, that military edge is eroding.

China showed off new, mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the US in just 30 minutes, along with its J-20 stealth interceptor jets, and Xi inspected thousands of troops drawn from the 2 million-strong People’s Liberation Army’s on its 90th anniversary.

With a nation of 1.3 billion, historian Alfred McCoy estimates that by the year 2030, China will surpass the US in both economic and military strength, essentially ending the American empire and Pax Americana the world has known since the close of World War II.

China people's liberation army plaXinhua

But China can achieve this goal patiently and without violent struggle. China has employed a “salami-slicing” method of slowly but surely militarizing the South China Sea in incremental steps that never warrant a strong military response from the US. However, the end result is that China has de facto control over a shipping lane that sees $ 5 trillion in annual traffic.

“The American Century, proclaimed so triumphantly at the start of World War II, may already be tattered and fading by 2025 and, except for the finger pointing, could be over by 2030,” McCoy writes in his new book “In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of US Global Power.”

China’s J-20 jet also likely borrows from stealth secrets stolen from the US through a sophisticated hacking regime. Though China hasn’t mastered stealth technology in the way the US has, the jet still poses a real threat to US forces.

Meanwhile, the US is stretched thin. The US has had been at war in Afghanistan for 16 years, and Iraq for 14. The US has been scrambling to curtail Iranian and Russian influence in Syria while reassuring its Baltic NATO allies that it’s committed to their protection against an aggressive Russia.

Under Xi, who pushes an ambitious foreign policy, China’s eventual supremacy over the US seems inevitable.

Open champion Jordan Spieth could surpass Tiger Woods' Major haul – Ernie Els https://briefnews.eu/open-champion-jordan-spieth-could-surpass-tiger-woods-major-haul-ernie-els/ https://briefnews.eu/open-champion-jordan-spieth-could-surpass-tiger-woods-major-haul-ernie-els/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 00:39:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/open-champion-jordan-spieth-could-surpass-tiger-woods-major-haul-ernie-els/

Spieth, 23, who won on the PGA Tour as a teenager, was always going to be a significant part of the golf landscape but Birkdale might have shifted the parameters.

In confirming him as a serial winner from the most unpromising of positions with the championship slipping through his fingers, it could yet end up being the significant fork in the road in Spieth’s career.

“Who knows where he’s going to end? He could go really big. He can go up to the 14 mark in Majors,” said Ernie Els, referring to Woods’ total, the most by any player since Jack Nicklaus.

“When you get on a roll like that guys start knowing that you know how to win and, almost like Tiger, people can maybe feel like they can’t do it against Jordan because he’s been up there a few times now.

“You’ve seen some careers where – like myself in ‘95, I had a three-shot lead in the US PGA and couldn’t get it done, and in ‘96 missed out in another very narrow loss at the Open – it kind of stalled. I only got four. But if you get the momentum going the other way, you can go win a boatload.”

Back up to No2 in the world, Spieth now sets his sights on next month’s USPGA Championship and joining Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen as the only players in history to land a career Grand Slam.

Nicklaus, who holds the record of 18 Major wins, paid tribute to Spieth’s fighting qualities as he overcame the calamity of squandering a three-shot lead and a mid-round visit to the practice ground to win his first Claret Jug.

“I was just very happy for him and very impressed to watch all that guts, determination and skill,” said Nicklaus.

“If you look at his victory total, this win and the way he won, Jordan has shown an amazing display of maturity for someone so young.”

Woods posted on Twitter: “What an incredible way to come back and win. Many congrats @JordanSpieth”.

Spieth’s gift – like Woods – is being able to sink vital putts when they really matter. He only hit five fairways in his final round at Birkdale but still shot a 69 to break par. “The putter is the master and he’s maybe the best putter that I’ve ever seen,” said Player.

Spieth has now converted nine of his past 10 54-hole leads – the one stain on that record coming at the 2016 Masters when he lost out to Danny Willett for the Green Jacket.

Willett revealed he always believed American golf’s blue-eyed boy would prevail this time.

“Mentally, for any age, he is one of the best around. His stats from leading are pretty phenomenal and he’s now won three times this year. He’s never that far away,” said Willett.

“He is similar to Tiger because you kind of know he is not going to go back. He may have a few iffy ones but he is also going to hole a few crucial ones at the right time. That’s why everyone was so surprised in April last year when he did not polish that one off.

“He didn’t play horrendously. He went out there and shot one over on Sunday and I went five under. It was one of those things. It was my time to win. He was always going to come back fine.”

Spieth can safely regard Augusta as an anomaly. The final five-hole stretch at Birkdale that he played in five under was the lowest at a Major for 20 years.

“I thought before the round that I had a reputation as being able to close but I was hesitant in saying ‘Majors’ to myself,” said Spieth.

“It was the best opportunity that I’d had since the 2016 Masters and if it hadn’t gone my way then all I would have been questioned about – and thought about and murmured about – is that, which would have added a lot of pressure.

“During the round I definitely thought any kind of fear or advantage I had over other individuals, not just Matt Kuchar but other people that are watching, was being taken away by the way that I was playing.

“That kind of stuff goes into your head. We walk for three minutes in between shots and you can’t just go blank. You wish you could, but thoughts creep in.

“Closing this was extremely important for the way I look at myself.”

US deportation of Europeans surges, on track to surpass 2016 numbers https://briefnews.eu/us-deportation-of-europeans-surges-on-track-to-surpass-2016-numbers/ https://briefnews.eu/us-deportation-of-europeans-surges-on-track-to-surpass-2016-numbers/#respond Wed, 12 Jul 2017 01:13:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-deportation-of-europeans-surges-on-track-to-surpass-2016-numbers/ Not immune to President Donald Trump’s deportation policy, Europeans illegally in the US are being sent back overseas at an increasing rate. So far this year, around 1,300 have been deported.

The number of Europeans in the US illegally is currently on track to surpass last year’s deportation numbers. From January 1 to June 24 this year, some 1,300 Europeans were deported, nearly as many as the 2016 total of 1,450 deportations, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Associated Press reported.

Magdalena Dolas, executive director of the Polish American Association in Chicago, has said that the organization she belongs to has been asked to give talks about what people should do if immigration officials come to get them at their residence.

Polish and Irish community groups in the city of Chicago have reported experiencing more inquiries about citizenship-related services, in regards to people seeking legal protections against deportation.

John Cunningham, who worked as an electrical contractor, is a well-known Irishman in Boston who came to the US with a 90-day visa over a decade ago. He overstayed and had been in the US up until last week when he was deported. Cunningham had a warrant out for his arrest after not showing up to a court hearing in a dispute with a customer. State records showed he also was not licensed as an electrical contractor, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Ronnie Millar of the Boston-based Irish International Immigration center told the AP that “people are very, very concerned and lying low.”

Approximately 440,000 of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the US are of Irish descent, according to the Migration Policy Institute, the AP reported.

Large numbers of people from various European countries are seeing a high deportation rate so far this year. From the United Kingdom, already 102 individuals have been deported; from Russia, 81; and 74 people from Poland. These countries accounted for the most deportations last year, according to the study.

Romanians are the largest group in the US being sent back to their original country so far this year, with 193 deported, according to the AP.

In 2017 so far, the total number for all deportations by the Trump administration has reached 167,350. This is compared to 240,255 in all of 2016. Mexicans are leading in the deportation category, with 93,000 people sent back to Mexico.

An HIV-positive Russian asylum seeker in San Jose, California, Denis Davydov, may face deportation due to overstaying a visa. He was detained for more than a month after returning from a vacation. Davydov’s lawyer had him released due to his status as a gay, HIV- positive asylum seeker.

Davydov is feeling vulnerable as his hopes of seeking asylum have recently become uncertain.

“Before this I thought I was doing everything right, but I’m afraid now that doing everything right is not enough. I don’t know what else I can do,” he said, adding, “I feel like it can happen again to me anywhere. In the airport or in the street,” the AP reported.

Ali Noorani, executive director of the immigrant rights group National Immigration Forum, has made the argument that the rise in deportations shows the Trump administration is going too far.

“It’s pretty clear ICE is removing anyone undocumented they come across,” he told the LA Times. “The bigger issue is that the Trump administration is wasting really valuable law enforcement resources on many people who aren’t a public safety threat, whether they’re Irish, Latino, Asian or otherwise.”

Longest-lasting vehicles in America

Americans drive a lot. Collectively, we put, on average, more than 13,000 miles on our cars each year, according to the Department of Transportation. Because of this, a vehicle’s ability to travel long distances without major problems is a huge aspect to take into consideration when it comes time to purchase a new one.

iSeeCars.com, a website that aggregates 30 million used car listings from all around the country, recently running through the numbers on 13 million vehicles that are currently on the road to determine which last the longest.

March 2017 NPD: Nintendo Switch sales surpass 906,000 in the U.S. https://briefnews.eu/march-2017-npd-nintendo-switch-sales-surpass-906000-in-the-u-s/ https://briefnews.eu/march-2017-npd-nintendo-switch-sales-surpass-906000-in-the-u-s/#respond Fri, 14 Apr 2017 01:38:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/march-2017-npd-nintendo-switch-sales-surpass-906000-in-the-u-s/

Nintendo introduced a new console last month, and it was a big hit in the United States.

The Switch was a huge hit in the United States in March, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That means the hybrid handheld/home gaming device outsold Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. We knew Switch sold well after its March 3 debut. Nintendo revealed in a statement to GamesBeat that the Switch sold more units over in a two-day launch window than any of its previous devices including the megahit Wii.

Above: Nintendo sold more Switch copies of Zelda than it sold Switches.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind surely helped sell some system, and Nintendo confirmed that it sold 1.3 million million copies of that game. 925,000 of those copies were on the Switch and 460,000 were sold on the Wii U.

That’s right, Nintendo had more than a 100 percent attach rate for Zelda on the Switch. That’s likely for people who were able to buy the game but couldn’t find the system in its first four weeks on the market.

Nintendo also notes that, in the U.S., the Switch is now its fastest-selling console ever and Zelda is the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game.

“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

This breaks Sony’s stranglehold on the market as this is the first time since October that its PS4 system wasn’t the top-selling home console in the States. Sony could easily return to the top of the chart if Nintendo struggles to keep Switch systems on retailer shelves or as the publisher launches some of its bigger exclusives later in 2017 like God of War.

Microsoft could also pull off a win this year depending on how the launch of its Xbox One Scorpio goes and whether it has any major exclusives that it will debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in Los Angeles in June. The publisher also had a comment on its performance so far this year.

“This past quarter, from January to March 2017, we saw record Xbox Live engagement with 1.1 billion multiplayer hours logged globally, a 14 percent increase year-over-year,” Xbox marketing chief Mike Nichols said in a statement. “Looking ahead, we are excited to share more about our plans for Xbox One, including launching the world’s most powerful console – Project Scorpio – alongside an amazing lineup of new Xbox One games. We are thrilled with the incredible response we have received to date for Project Scorpio, and look forward to sharing more about the Xbox One family of devices in the coming months.”

But it’s Nintendo with the momentum coming out of the first quarter of 2017, and it could maintain that success throughout the summer with launches like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, and Splatoon 2. And in the fall, the company will launch Super Mario Odyssey, which has the potential to give the system an enormous boost going into the holidays. For now, however, this is a victory lap for Zelda and the Switch.
