Kroger surged more than 9% early Thursday after the US’s largest grocery chain posted earnings that crushed Wall Street expectations thanks to a surge in digital sales.

For the first quarter, Kroger said it earned an adjusted $ 0.73 per share where analysts had expected $ 0.63, according to Bloomberg. Revenue of $ 37.53 billion topped the $ 37.33 billion consensus.

Oil surging to multi-year highs as China launches petro-yuan https://briefnews.eu/oil-surging-to-multi-year-highs-as-china-launches-petro-yuan/ https://briefnews.eu/oil-surging-to-multi-year-highs-as-china-launches-petro-yuan/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 08:27:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oil-surging-to-multi-year-highs-as-china-launches-petro-yuan/ Crude oil prices rose to their highest level in over three years after yuan-backed crude oil futures debuted strongly on the Shanghai exchange on Sunday.

North Sea Brent Crude surged above $ 71 per barrel for the first time since 2015 before retreating, though still trading strongly above $ 70 for only the second time in over three years.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also hit the highest level since 2015 at $ 66.55 per barrel, before retreating to $ 65.53.

Crude oil futures in Shanghai rose 6 percent on the debut of the petro-yuan. Investors rushed in to buy the new oil contracts from the world’s largest oil consumer, China.

“China surpassed the US to become the world’s largest importer of crude in 2017…so [naturally], China would want to play a more active role in influencing the price of crude oil,” said Sushant Gupta, research director at energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, as quoted by Reuters.

“Prices assessed at the Shanghai exchange will reflect China’s crude supply and demand,” Gupta added.

Some investors have expressed concern that the petro-yuan may face regulatory interference from Beijing, as with iron ore and coal, dissuading some overseas customers. This did not stop global commodity trading giant Glencore from buying the Chinese futures on the first day of trading.

Futures contracts are used to fix prices today for later delivery, usually within 60 days. Consumers seek to protect themselves from higher prices, while investors speculate, trying to guess where prices are headed.

Analysts have noted that the launch of the petro-yuan could shatter the petro-dollar’s dominance of the crude oil market. Nevertheless, it will take time for China to gain enough influence to challenge the greenback.

  • More countries are demanding oil imports coming in from the US.
  • The key drivers are booming U.S. production, expanding pipeline and export capacity, and a slight discount on West Texas Intermediate prices.

U.S. crude oil exports are surging and going to a growing number of buyers around the world, including to the fastest-growing demand centers in Asia, the traditional stronghold of the Middle Eastern oil exporters.

Booming U.S. production, expanding pipeline and export capacity, and the more than $ 3-a-barrel discount of WTI spot prices to Brent supported the surge in U.S. oil exports last year.

  • High-profile incidents in Playa del Carmen in recent weeks have prompted new travel warnings from the US government.
  • The incidents come amid spiraling violence on the peripheries of one of Mexico’s most popular tourist areas.
  • Criminal groups in the area thrive on tourist traffic — and corruption, weak institutions, and social conditions have facilitated their activity.

The calm in Playa del Carmen was shattered on February 21, when a blast erupted from the side of a ferry, injuring more than 20 people.

That was followed by the March 2 discovery of explosives on a ferry off the island of Cozumel, another tourist hub in the state of Quintana Roo.

One market bear says stocks will plunge 67% after surging to ‘breathtakingly extreme’ valuations https://briefnews.eu/one-market-bear-says-stocks-will-plunge-67-after-surging-to-breathtakingly-extreme-valuations/ https://briefnews.eu/one-market-bear-says-stocks-will-plunge-67-after-surging-to-breathtakingly-extreme-valuations/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2018 11:32:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-market-bear-says-stocks-will-plunge-67-after-surging-to-breathtakingly-extreme-valuations/ sky diving plane jumpReuters

  • By an increasing number of measures, US equity valuations are at the highest on record.
  • Investor and former professor John Hussman doesn’t think this is a sustainable situation, and forecasts that stocks will lose two-thirds of their value from current levels.
  • Hussman is an outspoken market pessimist who’s sounded the alarm on equity valuations repeatedly in recent months.
  • He argues that while psychological factors can keep valuations high in the near-term, the long-term forecast for the market will involve an unavoidable major selloff.

One of the stock market‘s most outspoken bears is at it again.

That would be John Hussman, the president of the Hussman Investment Trust and a former economics professor. He’s been sounding the alarm on what he forecasts will be a catastrophic equity selloff for months now, and his warnings are only getting more forceful.

This time around, Hussman is calling for the benchmark S&P 500 to lose 67% of its current value. That would bring the index from roughly 2,862 down to 950, a truly eye-popping level considering the index’s seemingly unstoppable streak of gains.

“I expect that the S&P 500 will lose approximately two-thirds of its value over the completion of this market cycle,” Hussman wrote in a recent blog post.

His rationale for the selloff is one that he’s cited with each subsequent forecast: stock prices have simply gotten too extended. And while Hussman has a war chest of valuation metrics he monitors, the one that just recently hit record highs is a measure of non-financial market capitalization, relative to corporate gross value-added (see below).

Screen Shot 2018 01 29 at 3.20.50 PMHussman Funds

The market bloodbath that Hussman is forecasting will be so bad, in fact, that one of investors’ favorite tactics — buying the dip — will be numb to its power.

“My impression is that the first leg down will be extremely steep, and that a subsequent bounce will encourage investors to believe the worst is over,” he said. “Study market history. The trouble rarely ends until valuations have approached or breached their long-term norms.”

Still, Hussman’s forecasts must be absorbed with the ultimate caveat in mind — his doomsaying predictions have yet to come true, even though he’s been making them for months.

His explanation for this is straightforward: he’s referring to a longer-term cycle, and while the market has remained resilient in the short-term, it must eventually buckle.

Hussman argues that when sentiment and psychology — rather than fundamentals — are driving the market higher, prices can increase for some time, but the end result is always some sort of crash. And in the case of this most recent run up to record highs, he cites the Federal Reserve‘s easy monetary policy as having emboldened traders.

“Aside from an occasional bit of lip-service, followed by reassuring justifications, investors entirely dismiss the level of valuations when they have the speculative bit in their teeth,” he wrote. “Recognizing that valuations matter profoundly over the long run, yet are nearly useless over the short run, is central to navigating complete market cycles.”

But Hussman isn’t one to offer such a pessimistic forecast without a solution. For those looking for protection, he recommends tail-risk hedges that kick in automatically as the market declines, rather than trades that require the completion of sell orders.

“I believe that it’s essential to carry a significant safety net at present,” he wrote. “Breathtaking valuations are followed by dismal consequences.”

One of Whole Food’s biggest competitors just inked a deal that could help it compete with Amazon — and the stock is surging (SFM) https://briefnews.eu/one-of-whole-foods-biggest-competitors-just-inked-a-deal-that-could-help-it-compete-with-amazon-and-the-stock-is-surging-sfm/ https://briefnews.eu/one-of-whole-foods-biggest-competitors-just-inked-a-deal-that-could-help-it-compete-with-amazon-and-the-stock-is-surging-sfm/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 22:08:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-of-whole-foods-biggest-competitors-just-inked-a-deal-that-could-help-it-compete-with-amazon-and-the-stock-is-surging-sfm/ instacart delivery guyInstacart

  • Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods sent shockwaves through the grocery industry, and now competitors are bulking up on competitiveness in order to stand out.
  • Sprouts Farmers Market, a $ 3 billion natural grocery chain, has teamed up with Instacart, which already powers delivery for other local-area chains like Whole Foods, Costco, Safeway, and CVS.

Sprouts Farmer’s Markets, one of the largest natural grocery chains in the US, announced Tuesday that it has inked a deal with courier startup Instacart to power its home grocery delivery, sending its stock soaring 5% ahead of the opening bell.

The service will begin in the Phoenix and Tuscon, Arizona areas, and later expand to other large Sprouts markets which have yet to be announced.

Instacart, which is based in San Francisco, was most recently valued at $ 3.4 billion in March 2017. The company already powers delivery for other large chains in Arizona, including CVS, Whole Foods, Costco, and CVS Pharmacy, according to its website. The service is also available in the large metros like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and more. Sprouts is notably absent from the East Coast, with most of its 280 stores in the West.

“We are excited to respond to customer demand for fast, convenient home delivery of their favorite Sprouts products in all of our major markets across the country,” Sprouts chief executive officer Amin Maredia, said in a press release. “Home delivery is a natural way for Sprouts to engage with our customers on their healthy living journey, and our partnership with Instacart allows us to quickly scale for growth.”

Many delivery services have closed shop in recent years after having trouble turning a profit. Amazon in November scaled back its Fresh grocery delivery service across large swaths of the US east coast. Other startups, like Sprig, Maple, and SpoonRocket have also gone out of business. Meal delivery service Blue Apron which went public last year, has struggled with an almost always declining stock price ever since its IPO.

“With natural and organic growing at a 7-8% CAGR (per SPINS), we believe there’s room for more than one player in this rapidly growing category,” UBS said in a note to clients Tuesday. “Further, SFM’s new customers have historically been more likely to come from traditional grocers vs. from other natural & organic competitors.”

Shares of Sprouts are up 5.85% over the last six months, but the stock price has seen wild swings with dramatic drops. Still, Wall Street remains fairly bullish, with an average target of $ 25.84 — 2% above where shares were trading ahead of Tuesday’s opening bell, according to data from Bloomberg.

Tax reform will make for a ‘noisy’ earnings season — but stocks should keep surging https://briefnews.eu/tax-reform-will-make-for-a-noisy-earnings-season-but-stocks-should-keep-surging/ https://briefnews.eu/tax-reform-will-make-for-a-noisy-earnings-season-but-stocks-should-keep-surging/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 11:11:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tax-reform-will-make-for-a-noisy-earnings-season-but-stocks-should-keep-surging/ animated traderReuters / Brendan McDermid

  • The effects of tax reform could stir up some turmoil in what’s expected to be an otherwise very strong earnings season, according to Goldman Sachs.
  • The two areas to watch are required corporate write-downs of deferred tax items and the hundreds of millions of dollars S&P 500 companies will owe in taxes on overseas cash and earnings.

Fourth-quarter 2017 earnings season is set to kick off at the end of the week and Goldman Sachs is expecting a rocky ride, all thanks to GOP tax reform.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing — after all, Goldman estimates that corporate profits will expand by 10% for the period. And since earnings growth has historically been the biggest driver of stock price gains during the 8 1/2-year bull market, that forecast is essentially a call for more record highs.

Goldman’s outlook just means that the market may take some unexpected twists and turns along the way. And if you’re able to see this potential turbulence coming, you could position yourself to best capitalize on any opportunities that arise.

The firm sees uncertainty stemming from two key areas:

  • 1) Required corporate write-downs of deferred tax items — Companies will now be forced to remeasure the value of their deferred tax assets and liabilities at the new 21% tax rate, says Goldman. The largest relative beneficiaries include utilities, telecom services, and energy, according to data compiled by the firm.
  • 2) S&P 500 companies will owe more than $ 275 billion in taxes on previous overseas cash and earnings — Goldman points out that the tax bill’s deemed repatriation imposes a tax of 15.5% on untaxed overseas cash and 8% on untaxed overseas earnings. According to the firm’s findings, tech stocks have the largest surplus of overseas cash and will own $ 123 billion, which accounts for 140% of expected quarterly net income. Healthcare stocks will face the second-largest bill, at 130% of net income, according to Goldman data.

Still plenty of share upside

As earnings season beckons, one thing working in the favor of stock investors is favorable analyst sentiment. Goldman points out that analysts have been lagging the market when it comes to pricing in the positive effect of tax reform — implying that expectations could still be recalibrated to the upside.

It’s already started to happen, with consensus 2018 earnings-per-share estimates (EPS) rising 2% since the bill was successfully passed. And Goldman thinks that there may be more optimism to come, as evidenced by the 5% total boost it sees EPS getting before all is said and done.

Screen Shot 2018 01 08 at 10.09.47 AMGoldman Sachs

The EPS increase up to this point is simply a “nascent effort,” Goldman chief US equity strategist David Kostin wrote in a recent client note.

So with all of that established, which sectors should you be looking at before earnings reports start rolling in? Lucky for you, Goldman has put together a handy guide showing profit growth forecasts by sector.

Energy is expected to be the top performer, which should come as no surprise, given its downtrodden state in past earnings periods, and the boost it’s expected to get from deferred tax items. And never one to be deterred, technology is forecast to be third-best, despite potentially hefty taxes from repatriated earnings. Here’s the full rundown:

Why Jefferies is surging and snatching back business from Wall Street’s top investment banks (LUK) https://briefnews.eu/why-jefferies-is-surging-and-snatching-back-business-from-wall-streets-top-investment-banks-luk/ https://briefnews.eu/why-jefferies-is-surging-and-snatching-back-business-from-wall-streets-top-investment-banks-luk/#respond Sun, 31 Dec 2017 02:23:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-jefferies-is-surging-and-snatching-back-business-from-wall-streets-top-investment-banks-luk/ rich handler jefferiesJefferies

  • Jefferies on Tuesday reported record earnings, driven by a strong year from its investment bank.
  • It’s part of a resurgence for the firm, which jumped two spots to ninth in US investment banking revenue.
  • Investing in talent in recent years while others retreated has helped the bank snatch back market share, as has growing its business with private-equity firms.
  • “If you do nothing too stupid or arrogant during the good times, you can take advantage during the bad times,” CEO Rich Handler told Business Insider.

Jefferies on Tuesday announced a monster fourth quarter that helped the bank generate the best annual revenue and profit figures in its 55-year history.

The firm, whose fiscal year ends a month earlier than the rest of Wall Street, reported annual revenue of $ 3.2 billion, up 32%; investment banking revenue of $ 1.76 billion, up 48%; and profits of $ 358 million, up from just $ 15 million last year — all three records.

The robust performance is part of a resurgence for Jefferies, which jumped two spots to ninth in US investment banking revenue — which includes fees for providing loans and advising on mergers and acquisitions, debt capital markets, and equity capital markets — according to Dealogic’s preliminary 2017 results released earlier this week.

It’s the only independent bank in the top 10; the rest of the list is made up of bulge-bracket conglomerates with massive global operations.

Jefferies CEO Rich Handler says the bank is catching up to some of its competitors and stealing market share in part because it has been investing in talent the past couple of years — especially in telecommunications, healthcare, energy, and industrials — while others were more gun-shy.

“Our recent strategy was to basically shrink our balance sheet and invest in quality bankers and quality people,” Handler, who has run Jefferies as CEO since 2001 and is the longest-tenured chief executive on Wall Street, told Business Insider.

He added: “Our industry expertise has improved and it’s pretty robust. Quite frankly, we’re in a good position, as many of our larger competitors have pulled back.”

Handler, who joined the firm in 1990 and has been a managing director since 1993, has a knack for staffing up when others are retreating. He also added to his roster after markets got choppy in 1998 and 2001 and again after the financial crisis in 2008, he said.

“The hardest thing to do is to invest when things are not going well,” Handler said. “It sounds kind of trite. If you do nothing too stupid or arrogant during the good times, you can take advantage during the bad times. We have done that fairly well over the past three decades.”

Getting in on the private-equity boom

The fruits of that investment were on full display in the firm’s fourth quarter, which saw record investment banking revenue of $ 529 million, a 27% increase from last year.

M&A advisory is up, but the independent bank has especially gained ground in underwriting debt and equity. For the full year, DCM revenue more than doubled to $ 649 million, while ECM revenue climbed 47% to $ 345 million.

Handler said that’s partly a function of Jefferies snatching up a hefty chunk of business from private-equity firms, an industry that is booming with record amounts of fundraising and dry powder.

Through the first three quarters of 2017, Jefferies pulled in just shy of $ 300 million in fees from financial sponsors, as buyout firms are often called in the industry, an 18% increase from the same point in 2016, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

“We’ve gained a lot of market share on the sponsor side because of the breadth of our sell-side assignments,” Handler said. “When you sell companies to the sponsor community, you tend to get the financing too.”

Given that private-equity firms typically rely on debt to finance acquisitions, establishing ties with these clients helps explain why Jefferies’ debt-underwriting business doubled this year.

It’s all adding up to a lucrative 2017 for Jefferies’ bankers. The firm is paying out $ 1.83 billion in compensation to its 3,450 employees around the world.

While payouts of course vary based on individual and department performance, that works out to an average of $ 530,000 an employee — the highest mark since the financial crisis in 2008.

The ‘death rate’ of America’s biggest companies is surging https://briefnews.eu/the-death-rate-of-americas-biggest-companies-is-surging/ https://briefnews.eu/the-death-rate-of-americas-biggest-companies-is-surging/#respond Sun, 24 Sep 2017 17:48:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-death-rate-of-americas-biggest-companies-is-surging/ grim reaperYves Herman/Reuters

Savor the time you have with the companies in the S&P 500, because in 10 years half of them will be replaced.

The length of time large-cap stocks have spent in the benchmark index has been declining, from 33 years on average in 1985 to 20 years as of 1990. And their window is forecast to get even smaller in the future, shrinking to 14 years by 2026, CLSA wrote in a client note, citing data from Innosight.

Those dwindling S&P 500 shelf lives are being driven by record merger-and-acquisition activity as well as the rapid growth of startups that are achieving multibillion-dollar valuations faster than ever, the CLSA investment strategist Damian Kestel said.

“The S&P 500 death rate is rising,” Kestel wrote in a client note. “A period of relative stability is ending. An increasing number of corporate leaders will lose control of their firm’s future.”

While getting the boot from a major index like the S&P 500 isn’t the end of the world for a company, it can certainly have some adverse effects. After a stock is no longer included in various index funds and exchange-traded products tracking the gauge — some of which are among the most heavily traded in the world — it can see a large drop in trading volume and overall investor interest.

Still, it’s also important to note that increased turnover in major indexes isn’t directly negative for the market as a whole. Each company that’s removed from the S&P 500 is replaced by another, in what amounts to a simple rotation.

Here’s a look at which stocks have shuttled in and out of the benchmark during the eight-year bull market, according to CLSA:

Companies that have entered the S&P 500 over the past eight years: Dollar General, Facebook, Regeneron, Accenture, Fossil, Level 3 Communications, Activision Blizzard, Trip Advisor, PayPal, Universal Health Services, Altera, Under Armour, Illumina, Seagate Technology, NRG Energy, Netflix

Companies that have exited the S&P 500 over the past eight years: Family Dollar, Eastman Kodak, Covidien, Computer Sciences, Abercrombie & Fitch, Sprint, International Game Tech, J.C. Penney, National Semiconductor, Safeway, HJ Heinz, US Steel, Radio Shack, Dell Computer, Avon, The New York Times
