We take the relative seamlessness of the internet for granted these days — it’s easy to forget that surfing the web was once a fairly clunky and convoluted affair. But for those hankering for a bit of tech nostalgia — or those that can’t conceive of a world where you had to double click on hyperlinks — a team at CERN has rebuilt the original 1990 WorldWideWeb browser, which you can explore within your regular browser.
The project celebrates the 30th anniversary of the development of WorldWideWeb, and it’s a neat way to explore the humble origins of the technology we’ve come to rely on for pretty much everything. In a case of art imitating life, though, many users have reported a “503 Service Unavailable” error when they’ve tried to launch the browser, which is frustrating, and entirely in keeping with the internet of old.

Enlarge / That is an aptly named sheep. (credit: California Department of Fish and Game/Tim Glenner)
In many areas of the globe, native species have been wiped out of large areas of their range even though some habitats that could support them were left intact or later restored. That has allowed conservationists to reintroduce these species, sometimes with spectacular success. The North American bison, for example, has gradually returned from near extinction largely due to reintroductions from the few small herds that were once left.
But not all of these reintroductions have worked out, and a paper in this week’s Science suggests a reason: over generations, native populations develop a “culture” that helps them to understand when and where to migrate. New populations, dropped into an unfamiliar landscape, tend to sit still and don’t make the most out of their habitat.
Seasonal migrations are common throughout the animal kingdom, and most of the attention is drawn to the more dramatic ones, like the multigenerational travels of the monarch butterfly or the spectacular distances covered by some birds. But many migrations are relatively local, as animals may shift locations without venturing out of their larger habitat. The reasons for this are typically practical: moving to breeding grounds that predators can’t reach easily, for example.

Welcome to The Professionals, an eight-part video series that connects you to the hearts, minds and anything-but-ordinary days of the people who run things, do things and make things GO.
The sun, the constant roll of water, waves, civilization behind you and an endless horizon spreading out in front of you … It’s no wonder that those who dig surfing do so rhapsodically. Despite how hard it is to actually do, surfing seems like it’d be a blast. Beyond that, action words typically reserved for other sports — killing, crushing, smashing — are largely absent with surfing, so no surprise at all that when we meet Paul Schmidt, a surfer with a thriving surfboard-building business outside of New York City in the Rockaways, he stakes a simple claim that for him, it’s meditative.
Even more than meditative, Schmidt says, “Surfing to me … that’s something that you can count on [that’s] just fun.”
And along with actually surfing, enabling others with his custom-built and painstakingly handmade boards closes the circle for Schmidt in a way that brings him happiness unlike other work experiences on dry land. “If you find joy in something just on a really basic level,” says Schmidt, “see how far you can go with it. Try to get lost in the details of that thing that makes you happy.”
Which, when you see Schmidt in his now-thriving shop bent over a board, either to make it or later ride it, brings it all home. While the boards he makes are not cheap, Schmidt says that’s almost as far away from the point as you could get. What’d be closer? The piece that’s all about wonder and a spiritual wholeness: “The time I put into the boards,” says Schmidt as he frames his “business” hope, is “that [it] kind of inspires people to slow down a little bit, be more present.”
A fairly solid way of saying, surf’s up.

After making plans to visit Ghana for a vacation, photographer Adrian Morris just couldn’t help but put his camera to work. From east to west, along the coast, Adrian captured candid and ethereal moments that aren’t easy to come by.
In early 2018, Australian photographer Adrian Morris traveled to Ghana. Initially, he went to chase waves—Ghana’s coast is home to great surf—and take a break from his working life. But as he began to research his trip, his interest in the region grew, and he couldn’t help but take his camera along for the ride.
Easily one of Africa’s most overlooked travel destinations, Adrian found himself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of photo opportunities Ghana afforded him. “The first thing I noticed was the color,” he says. “The colors of the clothes the women wore, of the small wooden houses, of the shops, of the hand-painted fishing boats. And there was this smoky haze that never seemed to disappear—even on a sunny day. It gave the place a real atmosphere and energy.”
Adventure.com: Adrian, tell us a little about yourself, your work and how you came to be a photographer.
Adrian Morris: I became interested in photography when I started to travel in my early 20s. I had a small film camera that a friend gave me. I took it with me everywhere and I gradually became obsessed with trying to document the places, cultures, people and stories I was experiencing. I now work as a photographer full-time, but I’m still constantly trying to develop the art of portraying a moment.
From a photographic point of view, what was special about Ghana?
I was drawn to the people and the way they do things, the way they live, the stories they have to tell, and their culture and beliefs.
The salt lagoon wasn’t that beautiful to look at, but I focused on the things I found interesting—the color of the salt in the water, patterns and shadows made by the sunlight, the movement of the workers, and the way those movements created a composition. If you look past the way things look at first glance and spend more time looking at the details, sometimes it’s surprising how beautiful a place can become. I think you can always find the beauty in things.
Is there a particular photo in this series that you can look at and think, ‘Yeah, that’s exactly the feeling I was trying to capture…’?
Maybe the photo of the kid running his hand through the river. It’s a simple photo, but it was a really nice moment that I remember clearly. We were sitting on a small wooden boat and crossing the river at the end of a very hot day; the sun had already gone down and the sky was almost pitch black.
Mikey Wright sent world champion John John Florence packing from the Quiksilver Pro on Tuesday in a massive upset at the world tour event.

UNLUCKY?Not anymore. Now women ruling this sport
Wright, competing in the event as a wildcard, took down the American two-time world titleholder 15.10 to 10.76.
Wright showed he was bringing top form into the world tour opener when he won the recent Surfest event at Newcastle.

He then topped his form up with a strong performance at the Sydney Surf Pro less than a fortnight ago.
“I’ve just been working really hard and trying to enjoy it all at the same time,” Wright said of his purple patch.
Wright is the younger brother of both reigning women’s world champion Tyler and Owen, who won the Quiksilver Pro a year ago to complete an astounding comeback from a career threatening head injury.

Former world champion Gabriel Medina also surfed himself out of strife with his defeat of Italian Leonardo Fioravanti on Tuesday.
But in another upset, replacement surfer Michael January has beaten last year’s runner-up Matt Wilkinson in the elimination second round.
February, from South Africa, was bought into the event to replace the injured Kelly Slater.

But the 17-year-old from the NSW Central Coast and Tokyo Olympic aspirant believes it will be much tougher to defend her world crown that it was winning the first one.
“One hundred per cent it is going to be a lot harder, everyone tells me that as well,’’ she said.
“It’s going to take a lot to do this twice but I do like a challenge.’’
Callaghan, Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright were the only Australian surfers to end 2017 as world champions but Ewing has now aged out of the 2016 world junior championships to be surfed at Kiami this week.
SPECIAL: Surfing’s special relationship
CLOSE CALL: Teen gives Tyler Wright a fright
However Callaghan, who is young enough to compete at both the 2018 and 2019 world surfing titles, has a point to prove at the event after just falling short of making the women’s world tour.
“It was a bit of a bummer,’’ she said. “But the goal is to get on it as soon as I can.’’
Representatives from each of World Surf League’s seven regions — Australasia, Africa, Europe, Hawaii, Japan, North America and South America — are competing in Kiama.
Australia also has a leading contender to dominate the men’s event in Kiama in Reef Hazelwood with 14-year-old Zahli Kelly also competing for Australia.
Fitzgibbons says having the women’s world crown going down to the final event World Tour event of the year in Hawaii in late November only makes it feel more special than usual.

WORLD TITLE: Aussies in the box seat
“It’s just like a Grand Final. We don’t get to have our own Grand Final very often,” said Fitzgibbons, taking time out from training briefly to helm her Celebration of Australian Women in Surf Gala at Manly on Saturday.
“How could it be better than to have a Grand Final finish. It’s like the State of Origin decider, the Grand Final rolled into one
“It’s insane. But it’s a deserve situation for the year we have.”
While Fitzgibbons officially leads the title race from Tyler Wright and American Courtney Conlogue going into Hawaii with her two worst results calculated into her score, she actually trails fellow Australian and defending world champion Wright.

Simply put, if one of the three wins, they clinch the world crown.
It’s a high pressure situation that Fitzgibbons is embracing.
“There is no better way to imagine winning this title that the way it is going,” she said.
On Saturday Fitzgibbons and Wright, along with the likes of former world champions Layne Beachley and Pam Burridge, were headline acts at the surfing gala in Manly organised by the world No. 1 to honour the sports top women and give their stories an audience.

“We wanted to shine the spotlight on what these incredible women have achieved,’’ Fitzgibbons said. “That’s what I love about other Aussie sports, they pay homage to their legends and their amazing moments – now.’’

Zander Venezia, 16, died while surfing a particularly nasty wave on Barbados’ east coast, Surfline.com reported.
“I feel empty, we are in shambles over here,” surf-pro-turned instructor Alan Burke said.
An autopsy report showed the teen was knocked unconscious by the large wave and drowned after being pulled into the rough shallows, the outlet reported.
After the teen was knocked off his board, other surfers tried to pull him from the churning waters and started to perform CPR.
“Zander was bleeding and he wasn’t moving,” Burke said. “They tried to get him to the beach quickly, which was difficult … there’s lots of big rocks around, and some stick out of the water.”
Paramedics continued to try and revive him during the drive to the hospital for what seemed like “75 minutes of non-stop CPR,” Burke said.
“Zander was such a good, funny kid. He was always joking, and he just loved surfing. He was so jovial, such a joy to be around. I just can’t believe he’s gone. I’m a mess, man. We’re all a mess over here,” he said.
Burke said the teen spoke his last words to a friend as he was riding the swell.
“I just got the best wave of my life!” he said the teen exclaimed.
Other surfers spoke to local media about the risk of surfing during severe storms.
“That wave only breaks when you have hurricane swells and it breaks in a different direction, so that swell breaks like once in a blue moon. When it is breaking guys go there because it is a beautiful wave, but it is pretty dangerous,” veteran surfer Mark Holder told Barbados Today.
“In my 45 years I have never surfed that break; I surf at Soup Bowl and other places around the island but I never surf that break because it is pretty dangerous. The way the waves are coming in today even at Soup Bowl, you have to be on your game. You must know what you are doing because out here is not easy. If you are not a professional, today is a day you should sit down and watch.”
Venezia, an Olympic hopeful, won the Rip Curl Grom Search in North Carolina in mid-August, and in April he won the National Scholastic Surfing Association regional championships.
He was expected to represent his home country in the 2020 Olympics, the first Olympics to feature surfing as a sport.
The Barbados newspaper Nation News called Venezia one of the island’s most promising junior surfers.
As of Thursday morning, the deadly hurricane had directly killed at least 10 people, continuing to move across the Caribbean on a path toward Florida.

Julian Wilson won a maiden Billabong Pro crown to move into the world tour top five.
JULIAN Wilson has joined best mates Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright as Australia’s best hopes of ending the year with a world surfing title after a thrilling comeback to claim his maiden Billabong Pro Tahiti crown.
Australians now fill three of the top five positions in a world title race shaping up as the closest in recent memory after Wilson became the seventh different surfer this season to win a world championship tour event – and only the fourth Australian to win at the infamous Teahupo’o reef break.
AUSSIE SURFERS RANK ABOVE THE REST
The win – over high-flying Brazilian former world champion Gabriel Medina – saw Wilson crack the top five on the world rankings with just four events on the world tour to contest.

“I’ve had a pretty steady start to the year and I am so happy to be in the mix now,’’ said Wilson, who posted two nine point plus rides in the final five minutes of the final to join fellow Australians Mark Occhilupo, Mick Fanning and Ace Buchan as a Billabong Pro winner.
“With so many events left, I am really looking forward to it. I was already enjoying myself on tour and even more so now. I cannot wait for the rest of the year.”
NETBALL GAMES SPOTS UP FOR GRABS
A career-best third place finish has seen South African Jordy Smith take the world tour lead from American world champion John John Florence. Australians Wilkinson, Wright and Wilson fill the next three places with Joel Parkinson now eight and rookie Connor O’Leary 10th.

The last Australian to win a men’s world crown was triple titleholder Mick Fanning back in 2013.
Wilson, a Pipe Master champion and the man surfing against Fanning when he was attacked by a shark in 2015, beat Medina 18.96 to 17.87 after surfing a marathon six heats on the final day in Tahiti.
“I won, I won,’’ shouted Wilson in delight.
“It is so special to win. Such a good final. I’m pretty speechless. I’m pretty worn out. I’m pretty ecstatic.’’
