  • Hillary Clinton said she would ask Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas: "Don't you want to retire?"
  • On "Watch What Happens Live," Andy Cohen prompted Clinton to ask questions to the famous people he showed on screen.
  • She also said she'd ask Melania Trump how her summer is going after the FBI raided Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago.

Hillary Clinton has a question for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas: "Don't you want to retire?"

During a Thursday night appearance on Andy Cohen's "Watch What Happens Live" accompanied by her daughter, Chelsea, Cohen prompted Hillary Clinton to share one question she would ask each celebrity he shows on the screen.

Cohen first showed Melania Trump. Hillary Clinton asked: "How's your summer going?"

The FBI raided Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Florida in August. The former president is being investigated to see if he broke federal laws on handling classified info.

When Thomas' photo graced the screen, Chelsea Clinton couldn't keep in a laugh.

"Don't you want to retire?" Hillary Clinton asked. Cohen and his audience laughed and applauded after the joke.

Thomas has been at the center of controversy this year, as media reports have revealed his wife, Ginny Thomas, tried to convince others to overthrow Joe Biden's election in 2020. Thomas also wrote a stunning opinion after the Supreme Court threw out Roe v. Wade, arguing that other rights like gay marriage and the right to contraception could be overturned as well.

She then said she would ask Mark Zuckerberg if he would let his kids go on Facebook.

Hillary Clinton said she wanted to ask Harry Styles who does his clothes and she would ask Beyonce "How do you remain amazing all the time?"

What would she ask Cher? "Is there still life after love?"

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87, according to NPR.

The cause of death was complications from cancer; Ginsburg had battled pancreatic cancer for years, undergoing several surgeries that required her to step aside from the court. Days before her death, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.” (The 2020 presidential election is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 3.)

Ginsburg was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1993 by then-President Bill Clinton, serving 27 years as a justice on America’s highest judicial body. She was the second woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court, following Sandra Day O’Connor. Her earlier years as a lawyer fighting for women’s rights were dramatized in the 2018 film On the Basis of Sex, starring Felicity Jones as Ginsburg.

Over the years, Ginsburg became a celebrity and feminist hero, appearing on talk shows like CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where she shared her workout routine with Colbert in this 2018 appearance:

Ginsburg was also the subject of the 2018 documentary RBG, which was produced by CNN Films and earned Oscar nominations for Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song.

SNL‘s Kate McKinnon played Ginsburg in a series of sketches and “Weekend Update” appearances on the NBC sketch show; here’s a compilation of McKinnon’s work as Ginsburg:

Farage grilled by BBC’s Jon Kay over ‘dangerous’ statement on ‘political’ Supreme Court https://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/ https://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/#respond Wed, 25 Sep 2019 22:12:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/

The Supreme Court president Lady Hale announced that the Court declared the suspension of Parliament under the Prime Minister as unlawful. As a result, Nigel Farage was interviewed on BBC Breakfast where he gave his opinion on the judgement and the Court to Kay.

Farage began: “For right or wrong we now have a Supreme Court, Tony Blair set it up. It is a political court and it’s made a very political judgement.”

He then went on to speak about the Prime Minister, stating it was a “matter of honour” for him to offer up his resignation to Parliament.

“If the highest court in the land says that you’ve acted unlawfully in your advice to the Queen I think as a matter of honour you have to at least offer your resignation to the House of Commons and ask them to vote on it,” he said.

Farage went on: “The political decision to call a Queen’s speech, while in most years would be a normal thing to do, has had the catastrophic effect in uniting the retainers and uniting the establishment.

“It’s allowed those who have spent three years trying to stop Brexit from happening now claiming they’ve got democracy on their side.

“Whichever way you look at this politically, it’s an appalling decision.”

But Kay was keen to address Farage’s earlier comment that the Supreme Court is a “political” one.

“I have to pick up on what you said right at the beginning there, that this is a political court. That is rated by some people as a dangerous thing to say, an irresponsible thing to say.

“I think over the months and the years that go by from now we have to decide can we have a Supreme Court acting in this way without having a written constitution but that’s a debate for later on.

“I don’t think at this stage there is any point in anybody questioning the judgement, it is what it is.”

Kay also pressed Farage over what the decision meant for Brexit and his vision of it.

do you think No Deal is now off the table, 31st October now not going to happen?” Kay probed.

Farage responded: “We have a Parliament made up of people who want to stop Brexit from happening and conservative party who pretend they want Brexit but actually over half the MPs sitting in Westminster for the Tories don’t really want Brexit to happen.

“We need a General Election, we need the public to express their will and what’s really interesting is the gap between people’s opinions on Brexit and Parliament’s opinion has got even wider.

“We will not get Brexit, certainly not a meaningful Brexit, without a General Election and without real political change.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

Canadian Supreme Court orders Vice Media to hand over materials related to suspected ISIS fighter https://briefnews.eu/canadian-supreme-court-orders-vice-media-to-hand-over-materials-related-to-suspected-isis-fighter/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-supreme-court-orders-vice-media-to-hand-over-materials-related-to-suspected-isis-fighter/#respond Fri, 30 Nov 2018 22:02:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-supreme-court-orders-vice-media-to-hand-over-materials-related-to-suspected-isis-fighter/ Canada’s Supreme Court has ordered a Vice Media reporter to hand over material gathered on an accused terrorist, raising questions about the rights of journalists. The outlet called the ruling a “dark day for press freedom.”

In a unanimous 9-0 ruling on Friday, the court ordered that reporter Ben Makuch must hand over his materials on a man by the name of Farah Mohamed Shirdon. Makuch wrote three articles about Shirdon and his involvement with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in 2014.

The ruling was due to the fact that it found Canada’s interest in prosecuting crime to be greater than the media’s right to privacy in its news gathering, the Toronto Star reported.

Shirdon, a Canadian citizen, left for Turkey in March 2014 and then appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video that turned up on the internet. In the footage, he tore up his Canadian passport, threw it into a fire, and said: “With help from Allah, we are coming to slaughter you.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been actively in pursuit of Makuch’s materials since 2015, when it obtained a production order under the Criminal Code. It directed Vice Media and Makuch to hand over all documents and data relating to communications with Shirdon, who is now believed to have been killed.

Refusing to give it to authorities so easily, Makuch brought an application to end the production order. That was, however, dismissed, and the decision was upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal.

The case then went to the Supreme Court, which began hearing arguments in May. Vice Media’s argument was that lower courts had not been correctly applying nine conditions previously set out by the Supreme Court when it comes to assessing the reasonableness of a media outlet search. The Supreme Court justices sided against the media outlet on Friday.

One of the justices, Michael Moldaver, wrote that the production order issued for Makuch’s materials should stand because handing them over would not reveal a confidential source, and no “off the record” or “not for attribution” communications would be disclosed.

Speaking after the ruling, Vice Media called it a “dark day for press freedom, which is a basic tenet of democracy…while we’ve lost this battle, nothing can shake our belief that a free press is instrumental to a truthful understanding of the world in which we live.”

Supreme Court hears arguments in Apple App Store price fixing suit https://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-hears-arguments-in-apple-app-store-price-fixing-suit/ https://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-hears-arguments-in-apple-app-store-price-fixing-suit/#respond Mon, 26 Nov 2018 17:08:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-hears-arguments-in-apple-app-store-price-fixing-suit/

Apple now has its last chance to fend off a lawsuit accusing it of price fixing on the App Store. The US Supreme Court is hearing arguments from Apple on November 26th as the company rejects claims that it uses its absolute control of iOS app downloads to keep prices high and take a 30 percent cut of each sale. In a filing, Apple portrayed itself as just a “sales and distribution agent” and said that developers were ultimately the ones who set the final price. It also said that objections to the 30 percent cut should come from developers, since they’re the ones who pay directly rather than users.

The lawyers behind the suit maintain that customers have a direct relationship with Apple (and thus an antitrust case) since they send money to that company, not the individual app developers. The attorneys further argue that Apple has extensive control over pricing, to the point where prices must end in 99 cents.

Don’t expect to learn the outcome for a while. A decision in the case is expected by late spring. And if the Supreme Court allows the lawsuit to go forward, it could be longer than that before there’s a verdict. Should the lawsuit succeeed, though, it could have significant repercussions for how Apple operates the App Store in the US. Apple may have to lower its slice of app revenue, or give customers easier ways to find apps outside the App Store.

Net neutrality just secured a court victory… unfortunately, it won’t make much of a difference in the near future. The US Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal of a 2016 DC court ruling that upheld the FCC’s Obama-era net neutrality rules, leaving the earlier decision intact. The brief notice didn’t explain why the Supreme Court had rejected the request, but noted that conservative Justices Alito, Gorsuch and Thomas would have overturned the lower court’s verdict. Chief Justice Roberts and newly sworn-in Justice Kavanaugh weren’t involved in the decision due to respective conflict of interest issues and past involvement.

The US Telecom Association, an alliance led by incumbents AT&T and Verizon (Engadget’s parent company), had taken action against the FCC rules in 2016 arguing that it overstepped its bounds by classifying broadband as a telecom service subject to common carrier rules, and thus net neutrality regulation. The DC court determined that the reclassification was reasonable, but the USTA promptly petitioned the Supreme Court contending that the FCC didn’t have the power to issue the order.

The catch, of course, is that the Trump-era FCC has repealed net neutrality. This covers rules that are no longer in effect, and it doesn’t bring them back. That’s not to say this decision is pointless, however. Net neutrality advocates are betting that the DC ruling will support the legal challenge to the repeal. The Supreme Court’s choice preserves that support — if it had heard the appeal and overturned the lower court, the case for net neutrality would have been that much weaker.

  • Before Ruth Bader Ginsburg became a Supreme Court justice, she was widely acknowledged as a trailblazer in establishing women’s rights.
  • As a lawyer who played a prominent role in several Supreme Court cases, Ginsburg’s work against sex discrimination helped to change the way we all think about women.
  • In 1971, Ginsburg wrote a brief that persuaded a unanimous court to invalidate the state’s preference for males.
  • In one case involving a widower, Ginsburg reasoned that rigid attitudes about sex roles could harm everyone.

As the debate about the treatment of women rages across the United States, one Supreme Court nominee arrived at her confirmation hearing widely acknowledged as a trailblazer in establishing women’s rights.

When he nominated Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the Supreme Court, President Bill Clinton compared her legal work on behalf of women to the epochal work of Thurgood Marshall on behalf of African-Americans.

KAVANAUGH IS CONFIRMED: Embattled Supreme Court nominee secures 50 votes in the Senate https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/ https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 13:58:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-is-confirmed-embattled-supreme-court-nominee-secures-50-votes-in-the-senate/ Judge Brett KavanaughGetty Images

  • Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court the votes of 50 senators, bringing to a close weeks of bitter partisan fights and protests over the nominee, who faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and doubts about his truthfulness under oath.
  • A conservative who served in President George W. Bush’s White House, Kavanaugh will replace the court’s swing vote, Justice Anthony Kennedy, and will likely move the court to the right for decades to come.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court in a narrow 50-48 vote in the Senate on Saturday afternoon, bringing to a close the most divisive high court confirmation battle since the 1990s.

Protesters — many of them women and sexual assault survivors — flooded Capitol Hill on Saturday, continuing weeks of mass protests against a nominee whose alleged history of sexual misconduct transformed a partisan debate over ideology into a cultural battle fueled by the #MeToo movement. Republicans condemned the demonstrators, some of whom interrupted the final vote with shouts as they were dragged out of the chamber, characterizing them as a special interest-funded “mob.”

How ‘the Forrest Gump of Republican politics’ Brett Kavanaugh became the Supreme Court’s most embattled justice in decades, after controversy over sexual misconduct allegations https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 11:35:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ brett kavanaughChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court.
  • Kavanaugh’s nomination appeared to be in jeopardy for weeks, after multiple women came forward to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct in high school and college. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations in statements and testimony.
  • But several key senators on Friday announced they intended to vote for him on Saturday regardless, paving the way for his confirmation.

After several tumultuous weeks of uncertainty, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, after several days of speculation over how key senators viewed as “swing votes” would decide. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia were pivotal in confirming Kavanaugh, voting “yes,” while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed his confirmation.

But the multiple sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Kavanaugh in recent weeks still hangs over Saturday’s news, prompting furious backlash from the protesters who for weeks lobbied Collins, Manchin, and other senators to vote against Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Christine Blasey Ford, 51, accused a teenaged Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her at a high school party in the early 1980s. Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without her consent at a dorm-room party during his freshman 1983-84 school year.

Kavanaugh categorically denied Ford and Ramirez’s accounts in separate statements before delivering a fiery testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. An additional FBI background check into the allegations concluded less than a week later with no corroboration for the accounts.

Kavanaugh was born and bred in the Washington, DC area and has a long history in conservative circles. Top Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin once called Kavanaugh the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” because he was present for so many key moments in modern political history.

As the final vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation approaches, here’s a look at how the born-and-bred conservative rose to become the court’s most pivotal nomination in decades:
