DETROIT — Ford said on Wednesday that production of its popular and highly profitable F-150 pickup trucks would resume on Friday at its Dearborn, Michigan, plant, which had been closed for more than a week because of parts shortages caused by a fire at a key supplier.
The No. 2 U.S. automaker also said production would resume on Monday at a second F-150 plant in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as its F-series Super Duty truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Production of the Expedition and Navigator SUVs continues without interruption at Louisville, Ford said.
The F-150 full-size pickup is the best-selling vehicle in the United States. The vehicle generated $ 41 billion in revenue last year, about 28 percent of total sales and the lion’s share of Ford’s profits.
In a media briefing on Wednesday, Ford executives said the May 2 fire at the Meridian Magnesium Products plant in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, affected several automakers, but its team was the first to enter the fire-damaged plant “while it was still smoldering.”
Working with Meridian and other suppliers, Ford said it moved 19 dies — used to shape magnesium parts — out of the Eaton Rapids plant in 30 hours. After inspecting and repairing the dies, Ford said some portions of the Eaton Rapids facility were able to restart production.
The automaker also flew one die weighing 87,000 pounds to a Meridian plant in Nottingham, England, after commissioning a giant Russian-built Antonov cargo plane, one of only 21 in the world.
Ford said it expected an adverse impact of 12 to 14 cents per share on second-quarter earnings, but affirmed its full-year guidance, saying it believed it could make up most of the lost production.
Ford shares closed up 1.6 percent at $ 11.40.

“The Board of Directors of Berlinger Special AG has resolved that the company will cease production of its doping control kits in the medium term,” the company said on Friday. In a separate statement, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said that Berlinger is withdrawing from the doping control business “with immediate effect.”
“We have taken the strategic decision to make an orderly withdrawal from this business segment over the next few months, and to focus on the high-tech core business of Berlinger & Co. AG,” CEO Andrea Berlinger said. She added that “doping malpractice” had increased and changed demands placed on the products, adding that it is “incompatible with our corporate values and core competencies.”
The decision was announced after examination of the doping bottles, which had been triggered by customers’ concerns over their integrity, including some of the company’s new generation ‘BEREG-KIT Geneva’ models.
“Specifically, the customer reported that a limited number of bottles had cracked when frozen,” WADA said. Meanwhile, the Swiss company said that had ceased to supply its doping control kits following “cases of breakages of the glass bottles.”
WADA is currently looking for alternative sources of sample-collection kits, but Berlinger is to “meet the continued demand” for its production “for as long as stocks last.” The product is being used at the ongoing Winter Paralympic Games in PyeongChang.

Carpooling has historically been a hard sell to commuters. Whether it’s the convenience of driving themselves or the lure of cheap gasoline, the percentage of Americans who share rides to work peaked at 19.7 percent in 1980 and has fallen by more than half over the past three decades. But with more people rethinking the way they get around amid an influx of new app-based transportation options, one global automotive supplier is banking on carpooling making a comeback.
–
Bosch announced Tuesday it has acquired Splitting Fares, a Detroit startup that provides a software platform through which companies can offer carpooling options to their employees. Bosch recently created a new division, Connected Mobility Services, and its new acquisition will function as an independent subsidiary within that unit.
–
While the likes of Uber and Lyft already deliver ride sharing for the masses, Splitting Fares, better known as SPLT, has essentially carved a niche within ride sharing. It sells its platforms specifically to business and others, such as universities, who want to set up shared transportation for their employees and students. Carpooling rides can be set up as one-time occurrences or as recurring trips.
–
Using an app, workers can connect with others in their organizations who share similar commutes. Then an algorithm computes their fastest route to the office. Bookings can be made both in advance or on demand. With service operational in the United States, Germany, and Mexico, SPLT says it already has approximately 140,000 users. New markets are planned as part of the Bosch deal, although there are no specifics yet available.

Like Uber and Lyft, SPLT doesn’t own vehicles that operate within its network—those details are entirely up to customers. Large companies might hire drivers and run their own vehicles on dedicated routes, while employees at smaller businesses could essentially operate as ride-sharing drivers, using their own cars to haul their colleagues to work while earning back some of their commuting costs.
–
Ford has started similar services with its Chariot shuttle subsidiary, which works with businesses to establish routes that help employees get to and from transportation hubs to their places of employment. Chariot lets employers determine those routes and gives them an option to open the service to the general public to help defray the costs of running the service, a blurring of sorts between the business-to-business and business-to-consumer models. For now, SPLT is sticking to the former.
–
While SPLT got its start as part of the Techstars Mobility startup incubator in Detroit in 2015, Bosch has long been among the auto industry leaders in developing autonomous- and connected-car technology. A recent report from Navigant Research ranked the company’s collaboration with Daimler on automated driving systems as the third best among the 19 companies pursuing such technology.
–
The acquisition of SPLT gives Bosch a foothold in the connected-mobility realm. “Smartphones are becoming the most important means of travel,” says Markus Heyn, a member of the company’s board of management.
–
He projects double-digit growth, especially as the company adds new markets. In some respects, it’s easy to see why. By 2020, Bosch says the number of people worldwide using ride-sharing services is expected to grow by 60 percent, to 685 million. That increase comes at a time when the number of commuters is climbing, and, as a result, traffic congestion is also rising.

In Germany, roughly two-thirds of the working population chooses the car for daily commuting, according to the German Federal Statistical Office. In the United States, 76.3 percent of commuters say they drove alone to work in 2016, according data from the American Community Survey, a part of the U.S. Census, while 9.3 percent carpool. That’s largely in line with 2013 results from the same survey.
–
With the proliferation of smartphones and now ride-sharing options, Bosch, through its SPLT subsidiary, is betting it can begin to reverse what has been a very stubborn trend.

Apple is still struggling to improve working conditions at its suppliers. Both China Labor Watch and Bloomberg report that Catcher, a key supplier for iPhone and MacBook casings, makes workers endure harsh safety conditions and unfair work terms in a factory in Suqian. According to observers and discussions with workers, the machines are not only loud, but spray fluid and metallic particles that frequently hit workers’ faces (only some of which have access to safety goggles and gloves). Workers suffer health issues such as vision problems, irritation and discoloration. Beyond this, the facility reportedly pumps out wastewater that violates local safety levels, and workers return to cold dorms with no hot water or built-in showers.
CLW adds that the work requirements run afoul of local laws. Factory staff are legally supposed to work 40-hour weeks, but they’re actually made to work 10 hours a day for 6 days each week. The scheduling approach also conveniently lets Catcher avoid paying double for overtime, as the law demands. Training frequently stopped at 4 hours when it’s supposed to last 24 hours. Even quitting is difficult, according to the report. Contract workers may have to wait weeks to receive their expected wages, and the contracting company frequently refuses to accept resignations.
Both Apple and Catcher say they’ve investigated CLW’s claims, but found no evidence to suggest that the working conditions had violated Apple’s code of conduct. It’s not clear why that’s the case, though, given the multiple reports of illegal activity and Catcher’s history of labor violations.
Whatever the exact story, the findings highlight the problems that Apple, and the tech industry at large, have with maintaining reasonable working conditions. They frequently depend on wide networks of suppliers to make the parts that go into products, and these suppliers often feel compelled to do whatever it takes to meet production quotas. That usually means hiring temporary workers willing to endure brutal hours and unsafe conditions to make an income they would never get in rural China. And while robotics can help, they also leave many people out of work. Companies like Apple can tighten their labor controls, but they don’t have any easy answers.

Dialog Semiconductor has reported record revenue for the fourth quarter, beating its own forecasts.
The preliminary figures for the quarter came in at $ 463 million, a rise of 27% on the same time last year.
In November 2017, the chipmaker had forecast revenue of between $ 415 million and $ 455 million.
Full-year revenue is now expected to be $ 1.35 billion, a rise of 13% on the year prior.
Shares of the UK-based German firm were up my as much as four per cent on the Frankfurt stock exchange as markets opened on Monday.
Dialog admitted last month that Apple — its biggest customer — could stop using its parts for iPhones in the future, though it does not see this happening next year. This sent shares down more than 20 per cent.
It’s the latest chipmaker to have its fortunes rest with the US tech giant. New iPhone launches this year have been good for Dialog, however the heavy reliance on Apple has left investors understandably cautious.
“Excluding the impact from the acquisition of Silego Technology on 1 November 2017, fourth quarter 2017 revenue was up 24% year-on-year. Unaudited preliminary revenue for the full year 2017 was approximately $ 1.35 billion and mobile systems, connectivity, and automotive and industrial delivered double digit year-on-year revenue growth.”

On Tuesday, Tesla announced that it had purchased an automation and machining company called Perbix. Perbix has supplied Tesla with parts for its high-tech factories in Fremont, California, and Sparks, Nevada, for the past three years, according to CNBC. Although it’s unclear how much Tesla paid for Perbix, the company says it made an offer of cash and stock, and SEC filings show that Perbix owner James S. Dudley received 34,772 shares of Tesla stock, which reflects about $ 10.6 million at today’s share price of $ 305.59.
The purchase comes exactly a year after Tesla acquired German firm Grohmann Engineering, which then became Tesla Advanced Automation Germany. The Germany-based engineering department specializes in factory automation, much like Perbix does. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stressed high-level automation as critical in boosting Tesla’s delivery numbers. Tesla struggled for years to make delivery quotas on the Model S and the Model X vehicles, and Musk told investors last year that his solution was to make each of his factories look like an “alien dreadnought.” An oft-repasted phrase from Tesla executives is that the company is focusing on factory automation to build “the machine that makes the machine.”
Although Tesla is largely making its quotas now with respect to the Models S and X, the electric vehicle maker had a very disappointing third quarter with respect to the Model 3. The “budget” vehicle aimed to bring long-range EVs to the market for a mere $ 35,000 by mid-2017. But after a debut event at the end of Q2, the company admitted it had only built 266 Teslas in Q3, claiming that bottlenecks in battery-pack construction were hindering its ability to churn out the pre-ordered cars.

Whirlpool
Sears’ 100-plus-year history of selling Whirlpool appliances — from washing machines to KitchenAid mixers — has come to an end.
The retailer has stopped selling Whirlpool appliances after a pricing disagreement, The Wall Street Journal reported. With the end of the relationship, Sears will also no longer sell Whirlpool subsidiaries such as Maytag, KitchenAid, and Jenn-Air.
“Whirlpool has sought to use its dominant position in the marketplace to make demands that would have prohibited us from offering Whirlpool products to our members at a reasonable price,” Sears wrote in an internal memo, according to the WSJ.
Business Insider/Hayley Peterson
Sears will continue to sell its inventory of Whirlpool products until they run out, and Whirlpool will reportedly continue to manufacture some items from Sears’ Kenmore brand. However, hundreds of items have already disappeared from Kmart and Sears’ online stores.
The retailer’s sales have plummeted in recent years. While the end of the Whirlpool relationship was reportedly unrelated to Sears’ precarious financial position, other suppliers have expressed concerns regarding the company’s ability to stay in business.
Sears has announced plans to close more than 300 Kmart and Sears stores in 2017. The closings will bring Sears’ store count to less than 1,140, down from 2,073 five years ago.
In August, Sears reported that sales at stores open for at least a year fell 11.5% in the second quarter. Total revenue fell 22% to $ 4.37 billion in the most recent quarter, mainly due to store closures.
