Authorities in the Philippines will standardize teaching in both public and private Islamic schools due to concerns over radicalization in the country after last year’s terrorist siege in the city of Marawi, AP reported. The country will implement an “institutionalized madrassa system” with a standard curriculum and greater oversight from the Department of Education, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told a security conference in Singapore. According to the official, some of the Islamic schools were found to have been run by extremists, which made them funnels for the discreet funding of radical activities. The siege of Marawi by jihadists lasted for five months last year, leaving more than 1,100 people, mostly militants, dead and 200,000 displaced.

“Since the illegal war against Yugoslavia in 1999, they [the US, the UK and France] want to have their own international structure,” Wimmer said. “They want to destroy the Charter of the UN. They are no longer interested in having an international organization, which can work. And, therefore, they do their utmost to create their own world where they can do what they want to do.”

The US and its allies carried out an attack on Syria without sanction from the UN Security Council, blaming the Syrian government for an alleged chemical attack in Douma that was reported by rebel-linked groups, and without waiting for an investigation by the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The former OSCE official warned about the danger of undermining the Security Council, saying that the organization “is the only chance for the globe not to enter a period of ongoing wars.”

“The attitude of the French, British and Americans is the same attitude, which used by Adolf Hitler in 1939 to enter into World War Two,” he said.

Wimmer, who previously served as a state secretary to Germany’s defense minister, said that “since 2011, when the war in Syria started, it was, from the very beginning, a common effort of the US, British and French to destroy, by force, the Syrian state… for their own purpose.”

“Now they have to face reality, and the reality is that Syria survived as an independent state by the help of Russia and Iran, mainly, and the support of both of these countries was in strict accordance to international law,” he pointed out.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed the missile strikes on Syria by the US, the UK and France, calling them “an appropriate and necessary” move. But, according to Wimmer, most Germans don’t share her attitude toward the attack.

“People don’t understand why she has such an approach… for an action of Washington, London and Paris, which is aimed at destroying international law and which is a clear violation of the Charter of the UN… In our constitution, it is clearly said that Germany never should participate in a war of aggression and what the Americans, British and French did yesterday was an attack of aggression against a sovereign country,” he said.

Early on Saturday, Washington and its allies fired more than 100 missiles on civilian and military facilities in Syria in response to an alleged gas attack in Douma on April 7, which the West blamed on the government of President Bashar Assad. The Pentagon hailed the bombing as a success, saying that the three sites, which it claimed were used to produce chemical weapons, were destroyed.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian air defense systems intercepted 71 cruise missiles and air-surface missiles fired by the Western coalition. Damascus and Moscow have previously denied the chemical attack accusations, saying the whole thing was fabricated. The missile strikes occurred on the same day that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons arrived in Damascus in order to investigate the gas attack claims.

It’s the latest reform in the easing of restrictions in the ultra-conservative Gulf kingdom.

As long as they meet the age requirement, women will now be able to receive a tourist visa to visit the country by themselves, Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) spokesman Omar al-Mubarak told the Saudi daily Arab News. The move is part of the country’s wider decision to officially allow tourist visas for both men and women after running a trial period from 2008 to 2010.

“The tourist visa will be a single-entry visa, and valid for 30 days maximum. This visa is added to those currently available in the Kingdom. It is independent of work, visit, Hajj and Umrah visas,” Mubarak said.

He said the commission’s IT department is “currently building an electronic system for the issuance of tourist visas, coordinating with representatives of the National Information Center and the Foreign Ministry.”

Saudi Arabia experienced an influx of more than 32,000 people during its trial period of implementing tourist visas. Those visas were facilitated by various tour operators licensed by the SCTH.

The SCTH announcement was not unexpected, as Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, head of Saudi Arabia’s tourism authority, said in November that “tourist visas will be introduced soon.”
Riyadh seems intent on boosting the country’s image as a tourist destination, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announcing in August a project to turn 50 islands and a string of sites on the Red Sea into luxury resorts.

The visa decision comes less than four months after King Salman issued a decree ordering that women finally be allowed to drive. The new policy is set to come into effect on June 24, 2018, officially abolishing the world’s only female driving ban.

The country is also easing restrictions on women in other ways. In September, women were allowed into the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh for the first time to witness the 87th anniversary celebrations of the country’s foundation.

In October, stadiums across the country were ordered to begin making preparations for women to be allowed inside from early 2018. As a result, women will be allowed into Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah on Friday to watch a Saudi Premier League football match for the very first time. Cinemas, which have been banned in the ultra-conservative country for 35 years, are also set to open in March. The country plans to have more than 2,000 movie screens operating by 2030.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has announced that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) is now permitted to plan and coordinate testing under the supervision of international experts and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD).

“The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announces that the Agency and its independent Compliance Review Committee (CRC) permit the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) to plan and coordinate testing. RUSADA is authorized to do so, using its trained Doping Control Officers (DCOs), under the supervision of WADA-appointed International Experts and the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD),” says the statement on the organization’s website.

The news follows the announcement on Tuesday of Alexander Ivlev as the new chair of the RUSADA supervisory board, replacing two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, who left the position in May.

Isinbayeva stepped down as chair of the anti-doping agency at the end of May, when WADA included her removal as one of the four main criteria for RUSADA to be declared compliant.

In the wake of the Russian doping scandal, WADA suspended RUSADA in November 2015 from carrying out doping control within the country, but later provided it with a road map to re-compliance.

Speaking on the latest development, WADA President Sir Craig Reedie said: “While there is still more to be done, WADA recognizes this milestone as a key component of the Roadmap towards compliance,” as quoted in the statement. 

“After much work by the Agency and its partners, resumption of testing represents an important step forward in rebuilding anti-doping in Russia. We strongly encourage Russia to continue their efforts in the interest of clean athletes worldwide.”
