  • Shanghai Composite: 3,412.55, -74.95 (-2.15%)
  • Dow Futures: 23,251.0 -687.0 (-2.87%)

Remember, US equities have been on the biggest bull run in history. This pullback means the S&P500 is now at the level it was at in early December, so long-term investors are still well ahead. Strong markets should have healthy pullbacks, so seasoned observers aren’t panicking.

Here’s Lutz:

Morning!  US Futures in Rally mode, led by a 20bp pop in Nasdaq as NVDA, MU and NFLX all move ~1% higher.  Smallcaps continue their lagging ways, with Russell up very small.   It’s pretty much all green in Europe, with the DAX regaining 40bp of yesterday’s 1% hit.  Commod stocks in rally mode, led by Oil and Metals, adding to gains among industrials, healthcare and tech.  FTSE is up small despite NEXT leading retailers higher, as UK Banks retreat.   Volumes very light as MiFID rolls out, with EU STOXX having 40% lower turnover, and London’s volumes are off 20% from a tag team of MiFID and Storm Eleanor rocking the UK.  Asia added to yesterday’s strong session – Hang Seng up 15bp – Shanghai up 70bp – KOSPI added 30bp – Taiwan added almost 1% as AAPL suppliers popped – Aussie added small as the Miners squeezed 2% higher, but Banks tempered overall gains – Indonesia was hit for 1.4% on heavy profit-taking, while Japan remains closed.                      

The US 10YY is down 2bp and flatteners going thru ahead of FOMC Minutes later today.  There is a Decent bid for Bunds developing, with Germany’s 10YY retreating from 45bp.  The DXY is trying to get upside 92 after falling 7days in a row, touching 4month lows, while Euro trying to hold $ 1.20 and China’s central bank guided the yuan to 18month highs.   Sterling saw a firm reject from $ 1.36 on Light UK PMI.   Ore added 80bp overnight, but Copper is dropping 70bp early, while despite the $ rally, Gold is adding to yesterday’s rally which set a new record of 12 consecutive gains.  Brent and WTI are shrugging off the Forties restart, adding nearly 1% – while Natty Gas is getting hit for another 1.5%

Good Morning!  US Futures mixed, with DJIA up 20bp as M&A Continues (Cineworld for RGC) – but the Tax Rotation continues, with Nasdaq down 40bp early as angst builds about benefits from Tax cuts and Corporate AMT.   Euro Markets are all under pressure, giving back ½ of yesterday’s gains – Euro Tech following the selloff, and the Fins are even under pressure.  DAX is down 50bp with Healthcare the biggest lagger, while FTSE is up small as Sterling drops despite Provident Financial smoked for another 13% and the Miners weaker as metals retreat quickly.  In Asia, Nikkei off 40bp as Nintendo lost 3%, but TOPIX climbed as Banks rallied – Hang Seng hit for 1% as Tencent lost 3% – Shanghai off small, but small-cap Shenzhen off nearly 2% – KOSPI up 35bp despite Sammy weakness as Steel stocks rallied – Taiwan off 80bp as TSM lost 2% and Aussie off 20bp as Retailers offset losses in the Financials 

US10YY continues to run into resistance near 2.4%, with buyers continuing to Focus on DC Antics and the Shutdown Deadline Friday.   Germany’s 10YY keeps skittering on 32bp, but the Euro is shrugging off weaker EU retail sales.  The DXY is flat tho, as Brexit Angst continues to weigh on Pound, trying to hold $ 1.34 as UK PMI posts light – Yen has a slight bid early, and A$ stronger as Retail Sales came in better.  Gold and Bitcoin have slight bids early, while Ore finally retreats, losing ~2%, shrugging off better Chinese Services PMI, weighing on Industrial metals with Copper getting hit for ~2% to 2month lows and southside 100dma.   WTI off 3% since the start of OPEC week, and nearing critical support close to $ 57, and Natty getting hit again for nearly 2% after smashing below $ 3 yesterday.

Morning, and Happy Merger Monday (CVS for AET, Prysmian for BGC)!   Tax Optimism and ABC News softening their Flynn bombshell fromFridayhas US futures starting strong this AM, with Russell up 1%, and despite decent indications in FANG, Semis and Biotech have the Nasdaq lagging a lot.   Big Sea of Green in Europe, where the DAX is up 1.3% – Industrials acting well across the Continent led by Autos, while banks remain in demand with SX7P up well over 1%, while even Tech shrugging off Dialog Semi.   London is lagging a bit despite Miners higher as Ore jumped overnight, as Healthcare and Staples drift near unch.   In Asia, Nikkei off 50bp as Tech stocks weighed – Hang Seng gained 20bp as Tencent rebounded slightly from last week’s smashdown – Shanghai off small, Shenzhen off 75bp – KOSPI climbed 1%, and Aussie off small as Miners were in demand

With the Fed in Blackout, we have the 10YY hovering around 2.4% and the Greenback stronger on headlines of Senate Tax Passage – Euro is weaker despite hawkish chatter from Villeroy – Better Japanese Consumer Confidence shrugged off as Yen weaker, Sterling weaker into EU Brexit Showdown Week as it ignores off a better UK Construction Print, while the Turkish Lira reeling from a strong Inflation Print.  Gold weaker on Risk and Stronger $ , while Bitcoin rallied as high as $ 11,800 in Asia trading “as crypto fever reaches Venezuela” – Ore ripped 5% higher in China, that has Copper up 30bp, while WTI is fading from last week’s OPEC highs, and Natty up 1.5% as cold weather greets US Traders this AM

Good Morning!  Spoos, Nasdaq and Industrials all roaming around all-time highs as we await JPM and Citi this AM.  Across the Atlantic, Euro markets drifting around unch, with Tech shares finally taking a breather and the Kickoff of US Earnings and Lower Sov Yields weigh on Banks.   DAX is flat in average volume, while Spain’s IBEX continues to rally, but volumes have collapsed on the periphery.  In London, FTSE up 15bp as Miners and Consumer show some life.   Lot of Green in Asia – TOPIX up 20bp despite a Yen rally overnight as Tech led gains – Hang Seng added 25bp as Fins and Property stocks saw their dip bought – Shanghai off small – KOSPI up70bp – Aussie up 40bp despite Miners getting hit on China Production Cuts

The Dollar is under broad pressure on “dovish” Fed Minutes, while Fed Funds at 82%, down from 87% yesterday and the 2YY is off 2bp and 10YY trying to hold the 200d as we await 3 FOMC speakers today.   The Euro is up 1% on the week as it nears $ 1.19 on better Industrial Production, while Sterling weaker as Brexit talks have reached a “deadlock” – all the blogs are chattering about Bitcoin thru $ 5,000.  In China, Ore lost another 3% – but all Industrial metals are slightly higher, and Gold on 2week highs as they enjoy a tailwind from a falling $ .   Energy mostly weaker, as Brent is getting rejected from 2Y highs near $ 59 while API showed a big Oil build, coupled with a surprise gasoline draw – but Gas contracts stateside are falling none-the-less.

Good Morning!  US Futures are mixed, as Nasdaq finally catches a bid as the Cloud names jump on RHT numbers – Globally, we are seeing the Haven bid unwinding slightly, with Gold, Swissie, Yen and Govvie Yields all lower.   Pretty quiet action in Europe, with DAX up small in decent volume – Tech lagging again in Europe, while Consumer acting well behind Nestle headers and Energy shares love the Kurdish Referendum.  Spain’s market remains underperforming as Catalonia angst remains, while Sterling’s strength has FTSE continuing to drift under the 200d.   Tech lagged again in Asia – Nikkei loses 30bp as Sony and Nintendo lost 2%+ – Shanghai and Hang Seng gained small despite Tencent hit for 4% before recovering – Taiwan hit for 75bp as TSMC and FoxConn get hit – KOSPI lost 20bp but KOSDAQ closes green despite Samsung’s 3.5% loss, and Aussie down 20bp as Banks fall

Fed Funds at 77% for December ahead of Yellen NABE Keynote at Noon, and the US 10YY seems trapped between 50 and 100dmas.   DXY continues to rally, with the Euro breaking downside $ 1.18 and the $ /Y recovering from yesterday’s North Korea headers.   Ore drops another 80bp, but Copper is moving nearly 1% higher, while the $ has Gold retreating back towards $ 1300.   Brent retreating 60bp from 2Y highs slightly as Kurdistan tension dissipates, while Natty gas pops nearly 1% into Expiry tomorrow.   Softs are starting today mixed.

Morning!  US futures are basically unch as Russell hangs near Friday’s all-time highs.   It’s a mixed bag in Europe, but most markets rallying from lows – DAX is up 30bp – Banks the biggest downside weight, while healthcare, energy and industrials help mitigate losses.  Eyes on the IBEX getting hit thru 200d for almost 1% as Catalan angst ramps.   FTSE trading unchanged, with weakness in Banks and Miners being offset by a rally in Consumer.   London is trading 30% light to trend, while DAX is a touch heavier.  Tech and Smallcaps smoked in Asia – TOPIX added 50bp, but Hang Seng smoked for 1.4% as Chinese Property stocks get slammed while Shanghai down 30bp.  KOSPI lost 30bp, but KOSDAQ lost 1% – Nifty hit for 50bp, while smallcaps smoked for 3.5% before a small rebound, while Aussie gained small as Banks retreated 

With 13 Fed Speakers this week, including Yellen and Fischer – Fed Funds are resting at a 60% chance of a December Hike.   The Dollar is rising on heavy Political uncertainty abroad – Snap elections in Japan have the Yen down – Merkel’s weaker showing weighs on Euro, as well as PIIGS debt – Political angst weighs on Kiwi$ , while Sterling weaker as Moody’s downgrades UK.  Europe angst has Bunds seeing a bid, weighing on US Treasury Yields as the 10YY rests on the 100d.   Ore saw small bounce after last week’s 8% hit, while Nickel, Platinum and Gold all see a slight pop.   Oil making fresh 7month highs early, as WTI nears a $ 51 test.   Softs are seeing weakness across the board.

Here’s Lutz: 

Morning!  S&P adding to its 2nd worst session in 2017, dropping small into Options Expiry today.   Havens are on the move – Swissie, Yen, Gold and Bunds are all bid early.   A big sea of red in Europe, with the DAX off 50bp, and Madrid off 1%.   Travel stocks are the worst performers on all major European Exchanges, paced by a 2% drop in IAG, but all rallying from opening lows.  US Airlines were hit for 4.5% yesterday.   London down 1% as Pound rallies – every sector on FTSE looks red, paced by a 1.5% drop in Healthcare.  Volumes are decent, pacing just ahead of their average turnover.   In Asia, TOPIX off 1% as the Yen rallied – Hang Seng lost 1.1% led by a 3.5% hit in Lenovo – Shanghai up small – KOSPI shrugs off Tillerson comments, closing off small – and Aussie down 60bp amid a wave of earnings. 

German Yields down 2bp and thru week’s lows, but starting to see some profit-taking as more Americans man their terminals.   US 10YY is barely positive, holding just above yesterday’s 2.18% low.   Dollar is under pressure again, with the Euro bouncing from 3week lows and Sterling nearing $ 1.29.  Eyes are on the $ /Y, with a test of 109 and last week’s low test upcoming.   Metals continue their upward trajectory – Ore rallies 2%, capping a 5% advance this week despite headers that China home price growth slows.  Zinc, Lead and Platinum all up 1%+ this AM, while Copper is barely bid – but Gold adds another 70bp.   WTI barely holding the gains from late yesterday, while Natty is off almost 1%.

Morning – Futures under some slight pressure early – CSCO off 3% and we are waiting on WMT after BABA posts what looks like a good number.   Just a sea of red across Europe – DAX down 20bp led by a drop in Fins, while Discretionary outperforms. FTSE off 30bp, but those Miners keep rallying.  Volumes are terrible, with most exchanges trading 30% light to recent trends.   In Asia – TOPIX off small – Hang Seng off 25bp despite Tencent’s rally.  Lot of eyes on China Unicom’s Halt – Shanghai up 70bp – KOSPI up 5bp, with tech heavy KOSDAQ up over 1% as Sammy jumped 2% – India up 30bp as it continues to recover from last week’s weakness – Aussie off small as Telstra smacked on Divvy warning

The 10YY is recovering yesterday’s hit, climbing 2bp despite Germany’s 10YY stuck in the red.  Dollar is shrugging off the Fed and Washington, climbing against most majors – Euro breaking down into the Fed and Washington – Sterling weaker despite better UK Retail Sales, but Aussie Jobs sends A$ thru $ .79c. Eyes on metals as Ore ripped 5% in China ahead of Housing data – Gold adding 70bp – Zinc continuing to add to yesterday’s 6.5% rip – Copper off small.   US Production scares has WTI taking out yesterday’s lows early.
