(Superhero Bits is a collection of stories, updates, and videos about anything and everything inspired by the comics of Marvel, DC, and more. For comic book movies, TV shows, merchandise, events, and whatever catches our eye, this is the place to find anything that falls through the cracks.)

In this edition of Superhero Bits:

  • Early box office tracking for “Black Adam.”

  • New insight on how Daredevil fits into the MCU.

  • John Cena achieves real-life superheroic status.

  • Todd McFarlane on a Spider-Man/Spawn crossover.

  • All that and more!

Will Todd McFarlane Ever Make A Spawn And Spider-Man Crossover?

We recently learned that a brand new “Spawn” and “Batman” crossover series is coming later this year, with Todd McFarlane partnering with Greg Capullo on the book. But what about Spider-Man? Will McFarlane make his most legendary creation crossover with the web-slinger in the pages of Marvel Comics? In speaking with Bleeding Cool on that very topic, McFarlane made it seem unlikely, given his limited amount of time.

“On Batman/Spawn, Greg is doing the heavy lifting… it would be an abundance of time on my part. I would just have to find it and I just I don’t have that… so my guess is I’ll probably either go to my grave never doing it, or I’ll hold out until I have time.”

In short, don’t hold your breath on that one, comic book fans.

The CW Releases A New Stargirl Season 3 Trailer

We are currently right in the heart of “Stargirl” season 3 on The CW and, while the network typically releases promos each week for the individual new episodes, they have released a new trailer covering the rest of the season. The video gives us a glimpse at what’s to come for the hero and the Justice Society in the rest of the season. Will it be her last though? That still remains to be seen, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves in that department.

Nikolas Draper-Ivey Says To Be Patient About The Static Shock Movie

What’s going on with that “Static Shock” movie? Has it been canceled like “Batgirl”? Is it going to go to theaters instead like “Blue Beetle”? The brass at Warner Bros. have been very quiet but Nikolas Draper-Ivey, who has written the character for DC Comics, is asking fans to exercise some patience on the matter. “Stop speculating about the Static movie. Don’t worry about those articles and be patient. I will not elaborate on this any further,” Draper-Ivey said on Twitter. So, it seems any speculation in the media right now may be unwarranted. This does not sound like a message one shares if the movie were in danger. For now, patience it is.

Marvel Is Partnering With Arizona Iced Tea For A Super New Drink

While the companies are keeping tight-lipped right now, the above teaser from the Arizona Iced Tea social media accounts indicates that they have partnered with Marvel for a brand new beverage. But not just any beverage! One capable of superheroic levels of thirst-quenching. What is Super LXR Hero Hydration? When will we be able to guzzle some down for ourselves? Details are limited currently but stay tuned, fans of delicious drinks and superheroes.

Black Adam Is Tracking For A Solid Debut At The Box Office

The first tracking numbers for “Black Adam” have hit the board, with the folks at Box Office Pro predicting that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s debut as the DC antihero will fetch anywhere between $ 55 and $ 70 million on its opening weekend. With the film set to arrive on October 21, the pressure is on, as it will be the first major Hollywood blockbuster to open since August. While that number would be good, it’s not the $ 100 million or more we’ve come to expect from many superhero films in recent years. Though these numbers are early and tracking has proved to be somewhat unreliable in the pandemic era. We’ll see where the chips fall.

Peacemaker Star John Cena Sets A Downright Heroic World Record

John Cena, star of “Peacemaker” and “The Suicide Squad,” may be an ultraviolent hero on screen, but has proven himself to be a downright superhero in real life. As indicated above, the folks at Guinness World Records have recognized the wrestler-turned-actor for his amazing record with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, having granted a staggering 650 wishes to date. That is twice as many as anyone else and, to say the very least of it, is downright remarkable. One imagines that number is only going to grow in the years to come. That’s the good stuff right there.

Is The Netflix Daredevil Series Canon In The MCU? Charlie Cox Weighs In

Charlie Cox is returning as Matt Murdock in a big way soon as “Daredevil: Born Again” is set to begin filming next year. The 18-episode series should keep the Man Without Fear busy in the MCU for some time. But is this a continuation of the Netflix show? Or something else entirely? Speaking with Screen Rant recently, Cox weighed in on the matter, saying the following:

“Yeah, I don’t know. But my instinct is based on the name of the show, it’s called Born Again, the fact…that Kevin [Feige] talks about it as being a Season 1, rather than a Season 4, my feeling is, this is a whole new deal.”

So, it seems this version of Matt Murdock may just be a variant within the Marvel multiverse, with the Netflix show taking place elsewhere. That might explain the slight differences with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in “Hawkeye.” But we’ll see how this all unfolds throughout Phase 5 of the MCU.

A New Black Adam TV Spot Has Arrived

Lastly, Warner Bros. is pushing “Black Adam” in a big, bad way now as the TV spots are starting to surface online. This latest 30-second spot actually contains quite a bit of new footage, and even seems to offer a glimpse at the movie’s big villain, who has largely been kept under wraps up to this point. We also get a great look at Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate in costume with his helmet off, amongst many other things. Be sure to check it out for yourself above.

IDW’s Crashing Is A Superhero Tale By Way Of A Medical Drama [Exclusive] https://briefnews.eu/idws-crashing-is-a-superhero-tale-by-way-of-a-medical-drama-exclusive/ https://briefnews.eu/idws-crashing-is-a-superhero-tale-by-way-of-a-medical-drama-exclusive/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 16:09:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/idws-crashing-is-a-superhero-tale-by-way-of-a-medical-drama-exclusive/

Superheroes have been at the forefront of pop culture now for more than two decades, thanks to the success of movies like “X-Men” and “Spider-Man” in the early 2000s. But it can’t just be DC and Marvel’s A-listers like Batman and Captain America carrying this torch forever. More to the point, we could use more stories that bring us into the world of superheroes in a unique way.

That’s where IDW’s new miniseries “Crashing,” which has just hit shelves, is worth putting on your radar — and we’ve got an exclusive look for you!

What we’ve got today is a unique look at Matthew Klein’s five-issue miniseries, which offers a window into the process that illustrator Morgan Beem, colorist Triona Farrell and lettererd Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou went through to get the book in our hands, in its finished form.

“Crashing” follows Rose Osler, a specialist whose focus is patients with Powers. She works at a hospital with a “No Powered Patients” policy. When a battle between Boston’s protectors and destroyers erupts, Rose is trapped between saving the city’s beloved hero by day and greatest villain at night. Except Rose could become a casualty when she’s forced to risk her recovery. This artwork gives us a glimpse at what her life is like in a hospital in a world filled with super powered individuals.

A Superhero Genre Mash-Up

Aside from the details of the plot, the book is being described as part superhero thriller, sort of on the grittier side of things like “The Boys,” by way of a medical drama, sort of like “Nurse Jackie.” So with a little more edge than something like “Grey’s Anatomy.” As someone who has read the first issue, I can confirm that description is accurate.

One thing I can say for sure is that those who enjoy superheroes via movies and TV shows but haven’t dug into the comics may have a tough time making that leap. It can be difficult and intimidating to look at decades and decades worth of stories, wondering where to begin.

What’s nice about something like “Crashing” is that it provides a fresh jumping on point. Not only that, but it’s going to be a miniseries, so it will have a beginning, middle, and end. And it could work well as a starting point for those looking to dive more into the medium of comics, given that they tend to inspire the biggest franchises in the world these days.

“Crashing” #1 is on shelves and available through digital comics retailers now.

Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg Almost Directed A Completely Different Superhero Movie https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 08:33:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/

One of the most notable aspects of David F. Sandberg’s 2019 superhero film “Shazam!” is its sense of wide-eyed wonderment. The title character is a tall, muscular, adult superhero with lightning powers and the ability to fly. In actuality, Shazam is the alter ego of one Billy Batson (Asher Angel), an orphaned teen who, through a complicated set of circumstances, acquired the ability to become a superpowered adult. Much of “Shazam!” is devoted to Billy and his foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) reacting with astonishment to Billy’s new superpowers. Indeed, it takes Billy and Freddy the bulk of “Shazam!” to realize that being a superhero involves more strength of character than raw power.

The film’s “little kid” sense of awe is something that is woefully missing from a lot of modern superhero cinema which increasingly skews toward oblique interconnected mythologies and the turgid navel-gazing of Nietzschean overmen. “Shazam!” is light and fun and understands the appeal superheroes have for youths. It’s the best superhero movie at least since Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2.”

Given its fresh-faced innocence and little-kid appeal, it’s bizarre to think that Sandberg was once attached to a far stranger and weirder superhero flick. In a recent interview on Instagram, portions of which were transcribed on CBR, Sandberg revealed that he almost took on the alien parasite film “Venom.”

Venom

For “Spider-Man” fans, Venom is a well-understood and long-established villain who has been giving Spider-Man trouble since his creation in 1988. For outsiders, his origin is incredibly oblique. The story goes — very briefly — that Spider-Man, while visiting an alien world (don’t ask), stepped into a machine that wrapped his body in a brand new, all-black Spider costume. It would eventually be revealed that his new outfit was not made of cloth, but was in fact a living, intelligent alien blob that could bond with a host organism and change itself into clothes. The blob ended up seeping too deeply into Spider-Man’s brain, necessitating that he painfully separate himself from the symbiote. It then wrapped itself around a man named Eddie Brock, a rival of Peter Parker’s, warping into a large, fanged, cannibal version of Spider-Man. Functionally, Venom (as it called itself) is Spider-Man’s evil twin.

Rueben Fleischer’s 2018 film “Venom” is comfortably separated from “Spider-Man,” and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is merely infected by an alien parasite. When it emerges from his body and wraps itself around Eddie, it looks like a shark made of tar and snot. Venom may have been part of the pop consciousness for 30 years, but it still looks dang ugly.

Sandberg revealed that he was once offered the chance to direct “Venom” when a fan asked point blank if he had ever been offered anything. Sandberg’s answer was brief: “I read the script for and had a meeting about ‘Venom’ but I was already going down the path of ‘Shazam!’ and felt that I’d rather do that than pursue ‘Venom.'”

It’s as simple as that. Sandberg just wanted to do “Shazam!” more.

Their Sequels

Both “Shazam!” and “Venom” have one notable thing in common: they gain power from their own characters and stories and don’t rely exclusively on their connection to other films in a franchise. “Venom,” at least until a post-credits stinger, doesn’t link to other films in any other Marvel Comics film canon, and “Shazam!,” in having a few references to Batman and an adorable cameo from Superman, is part of the DCEU. But otherwise, both films are stronger for living in their own worlds. Although tonally very different, both movies are arguably good for the same reason.

They were also big hits. “Shazam!” made $ 366 million, and “Venom” made a whopping $ 856 million. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” a bonkers, 90-minute trifle, expanded the relationship between Eddie and his symbiote into a straight-up queer romance, while “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” will pit Billy against villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. “Fury of the Gods” is due in theaters on March 17, 2023.

With the “Spider-Man” extended universe in a bizarre place (“Madame Web,” anyone?) and the future of the DCEU uncertain, it seems “Venom” and “Shazam!” will remain stalwart in being disconnected. Thank goodness.

Superhero Bits: Batman: The Animated Series Turns 30, Moon Knight Won An Emmy & More https://briefnews.eu/superhero-bits-batman-the-animated-series-turns-30-moon-knight-won-an-emmy-more/ https://briefnews.eu/superhero-bits-batman-the-animated-series-turns-30-moon-knight-won-an-emmy-more/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2022 22:37:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/superhero-bits-batman-the-animated-series-turns-30-moon-knight-won-an-emmy-more/

  • Marvel won some Emmys.

  • A new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” video game is on the way.

  • John Diggle on that Green Lantern tease in the “Arrow” finale.

  • “Batman: The Animated Series” turns 30 today.

  • All that and more!

Will Stargirl Season 4 Happen? Brec Bassinger Weighs In

The fate of the Arrowverse is all but decided, what with “The Flash” coming to an end and The CW sold to a new owner. Be that as it may, “Stargirl” lead Brec Bassinger is hopeful that the show is going to get a fourth season, though nothing is set in stone right now. Speaking with Decider, the actress had this to say about it:

“Geoff, our showrunner, for lack of a better term, this is his baby and he’s put so much love, and I’ve heard season 4 pitches, and I know he’s not leaving any stone unturned to get it to continue. But I’m just so grateful. There has been so much fan push on Twitter and Instagram, and it has made me and Geoff and the whole cast and crew feel so loved, because we do work hard on it. So it feels good that they’re rooting for us.”

“Stargirl” is currenting airing its third season on The CW right now, with new episodes dropping Wednesdays.

Kid Flash Build-A-Figure From McFarlane Toys

The fine folks at McFarlane Toys have revealed a new Kid Flash figure that is set to be a part of the company’s Build-A figure wave, in partnership with DC. Unfortunately we don’t have much to go on right now, save for the above image reveal. But we should be getting more details on pricing and a release date soon, as well as retailer info. So those who are interested in picking one of these up would do well to stay tuned to the company’s social channels.

Moon Knight Won An Emmy

The Creative Arts Emmys took place over the weekend and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially picking up trophies for its work on the small screen now. To that end, “Moon Knight” took home the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special. More than anything, this is a reminder that Marvel and Disney are billing the show as a limited series, meaning that anyone’s hopes of getting a second season grow slimmer by the day. But hey, that one season resulted in a fancy award to add to Marvel Studios’ trophy case.

It Looks Like A Big New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Is Coming Our Way

As reported by the folks at The Gamer, the September issue of Toy World Magazine states that Nickelodeon and Paramount are set to release a “brand new triple-A” video game set within the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise in 2023. The move would make sense given the release of the animated “TMNT” film “Mutant Mayhem” hitting theaters next summer. Plus, “Shredder’s Revenge” did quite well recently and the “Cowabunga Collection,” which collects a bunch of older games featuring the half-shell heroes, recently hit shelves. But this indicates we are getting something much more significant than a new side scroller. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details come our way.

She-Hulk Featurette Highlights The Show’s Many Big Cameos

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has been quite unlike any other MCU project to date and is very much making use of the episodic storytelling allowed by its Disney+ release. As part of that, we’ve been treated to some big cameos serving as major surprises week-to-week. The above video goes over some of those cameos thus far, namely Megan Thee Stallion’s much-discussed appearance in episode 3. But many other cameos in the show’s future are also teased. We know Daredevil is coming, but who else might be on the docket? The show returns with a new episode this Thursday.

John Diggle’s Green Lantern Setup In Arrow Is Not Resolved Says David Ramsey

A gigantic theory for years in the Arrowverse was that David Ramsey’s John Diggle would be revealed as a Green Lantern. And, wouldn’t you know it, the “Arrow” finale kind of teed that up. Yet, nothing really ever came of it. Well, speaking at DragonCon (via The Direct), Ramsey addressed that situation in a very meandering way. The main takeaway? He says that thread has yet to be resolved.

“It’s not resolved. Eric [Wallace] called me, showrunner of ‘The Flash,’ and he had a pitch for me to end the saga, the Green Lantern Saga, within the Arrowverse. The reason why he did is because the Arrowverse was ending, right? It’s gonna end with Flash and all the other shows would go. We knew, not at the time, I knew but you didn’t know yet, that Todd [Helbing] was going to reveal in ‘Superman & Lois’ that the Superman & Lois-verse, if you will, exists on another planet, on a different Earth, and these characters are still alive. The idea is perhaps there’s a world where we can explore the Flash, or maybe just Barry Allen. Maybe he is Flash, maybe he isn’t. Is Oliver Queen alive? Maybe he is. Maybe the ring is still there.”

“The Flash” season 9 and “Superman & Lois” season 3 are pretty much going to wrap it up for the Arrowverse so it seems less and less likely we’ll ever pull on this thread again. But who knows?

Chadwick Boseman Won A Posthumous Emmy For His Role As T’Challa In What If…?

Just over a year after his untimely passing, Chadwick Boseman was awarded an Emmy for his final performance as T’Challa in the MCU. Specifically, the actor took home the prize for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for his work in “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord” from “What If…?” season 1. It was a well deserved award and serves as a reminder of what we lost with Boseman’s passing, though we are very fortunate to have the tremendous body of work he left behind.

Morena Baccarin Wants To Be In Deadpool 3, But She Has No Idea What’s Going On

We know that Disney is finally making “Deadpool 3” happen and it seems like things are coming together nicely on that front. But who is going to be joining Ryan Reynolds in the sequel? Morena Baccarin expressed her desire to return as Vanessa during an appearance at DragonCon (via The Direct). However, she has no idea if that’s going to actually happen or not.

“You know, from your lips to God’s ears, I have no idea [if Vanessa’s in Deadpool 3]. They’re writing the script right now. I’m usually the last to find out anything. I’m not even … I wish I had information I could give you but I really don’t. But it’d be great.”

Now, let’s be honest, even if Baccarin did know something, it’s not as though she would be able to say so. Still, it does sound like she’s being genuine and the opposite of cagey here.

Happy 30th Birthday, Batman: The Animated Series!

Lastly, today is a landmark day in superhero history as “Batman: The Animated Series,” arguably the greatest adaptation of the Dark Knight in any medium outside of the pages of DC Comics, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. indeed, on this day in 1992, the first episode of the beloved series debuted, introducing us to Kevin Conroy’s legendary Batman who, to this very day, remains the “one true Batman” for a great many fans. Those looking to celebrate can do so by streaming the series on HBO Max, if they so choose.

Wonder Woman: Pedro Pascal Recalls His Previous Spin With Superhero, in NBC Pilot Starring Adrianne Palicki https://briefnews.eu/wonder-woman-pedro-pascal-recalls-his-previous-spin-with-superhero-in-nbc-pilot-starring-adrianne-palicki/ https://briefnews.eu/wonder-woman-pedro-pascal-recalls-his-previous-spin-with-superhero-in-nbc-pilot-starring-adrianne-palicki/#respond Sat, 26 Dec 2020 16:50:18 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/wonder-woman-pedro-pascal-recalls-his-previous-spin-with-superhero-in-nbc-pilot-starring-adrianne-palicki/ Before he lorded over Black Gold Cooperative in the newly released Wonder Woman 1984, Pedro Pascal made nice with the Amazonian princess in the famously ill-fated NBC pilot starring Adrianne Palicki.

Landing a plum role on the buzzy 2011 TV project “was like a dream come true,” Pascal told our sister site Variety.

The David E. Kelley-penned pilot starred Palicki as Wonder Woman aka Themyscira Industries CEO Diana Themyscira aka mild-mannered Diana Prince (yes, she had two alter egos, oof). Justin Bruening (All My Children) co-starred as Steve Trevor, an Army vet who now works in the Justice Department, while Elizabeth Hurley (The Royals) played nemesis Veronica Cale.

Pascal, whose main TV credits at that point included arcs on The Good Wife and FX’s Lights Out, played Ed Indelicato, an LAPD detective who liaisoned with the city’s local superhero.

“It was like a dream come true,” the star of The Mandalorian recalled for Variety. “David E. Kelley’s influence on television when I was freshly out of college was so huge, and I watched every episode of [Palicki’]s Friday Night Lights. I also thought that whether it was good or not, it would definitely get picked up. So that would change my financial situation significantly, even if it was half a season before it got canceled. But it didn’t even get picked up.”

As for whether Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins knew of his previous run-in with the Amazonian princess at the time he was cast as one of the sequel’s two villains, Max Lord, he was unsure, shrugging, “They must have either not have known or not cared.”

Shortly after NBC cut bait on its Wonder Woman series, TVLine asked then-network chief Robert Greenblatt about the decision. “With this kind of audience, you have to get these things absolutely right; there’s no room for error. At the end of the day, I didn’t think we had done that,” he explained. “The action is amazing. Adrianne Palicki is beautiful. Elizabeth Hurley is fantastic. It’s like any creative thing — there are going to be people who like it or don’t like it.”

The Korean-American, Spider-Man-like heroine Silk may lead a live-action Marvel series from Sony Pictures TV, sources tell our sister site Variety. Lauren Moon (Good Trouble, Atypical) is in talks to pen the project, with Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller exec-producing. While no outlet is officially attached yet, Amazon Prime is in talks, per Variety‘s sources.

Silk, aka Cindy Moon, was bitten by a radioactive spider in the comics, just like her classmate Peter Parker. She then developed the ability to move at incredible speed and shoot webs out of her fingertips, in addition to possessing an advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense). The character was portrayed by Tiffany Espensen in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

* CBS is developing Closure, a drama loosely based on the life of baseball Hall of Famer-turned-funeral home owner Andre Dawson, our sister site Deadline reports. Bestselling author and film producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven) will serve as an executive producer.

* Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show) will create and star in an ABC single-camera comedy about a group of teachers at one of the worst public schools in the country, per Deadline. (The project has a put-pilot commitment at the network.)

Captain Marvel: 'Feels so EMBARRASSING' Brie Larson’s major superhero moment was 'awkward' https://briefnews.eu/captain-marvel-feels-so-embarrassing-brie-larsons-major-superhero-moment-was-awkward/ https://briefnews.eu/captain-marvel-feels-so-embarrassing-brie-larsons-major-superhero-moment-was-awkward/#respond Sun, 03 Mar 2019 20:12:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/captain-marvel-feels-so-embarrassing-brie-larsons-major-superhero-moment-was-awkward/

In the promos for Captain Marvel, we see Carol Danvers fully suited-up with her eyes glowing, her hair aflame and a stance ready to take on the world. It’s a breathtaking moment – but Larson said that, without all the special effects trickery on set, it was actually “so embarrassing” to shoot.

Speaking with YouTuber Janina Vela, Larson was asked if she practised it in the mirror.

“Yes, I had to!” she said.

“It’s more awkward than you think. I mean, I couldn’t stop laughing.

“The first couple of weeks, I was like, ‘I feel so silly doing this’.

“Then you get into it and it’s fun.”

She added: “That shot where my hair’s all in flames – it looks really cool but in the moment you’re like, ‘oh God, this just feels so embarrassing!’”

Larson’s arrival as Carol Danvers is a huge deal for Marvel: the film is the studio’s first in which a female is the only titular character.

It’s been met with some minor pushback by trolls online, who have interpreted her vocal campaigning for female and BAME film journalists to get more opportunities as “anti-white-men” sentiments.

But she spoke out about the issue herself in another interview with FOX 5 DC.

When the interviewer mentioned that “headlines” have misrepresented her, she said: “It’s hard for me to comment on that because I don’t know what the headlines were or what was said or what I said or what people think I said.”

But she clarified: “All that I know is, what I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. Nobody is getting their chair taken away.

“There’s not less seats at the table. Just more seats at the table.”

Captain Marvel is out on March 8.
