This year, Japan will deploy a Cray XC50 that will be the world’s most powerful supercomputer in the field of advanced nuclear fusion research. It will be installed at the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science (QST) and used for local nuclear fusion science and to support ITER, the massive multinational fusion project scheduled to come online in 2035.

QST’s system, which has yet to be named, won’t even be the top Cray XC50 system (that honor is held by the Swiss National Supercomputing Center’s “Piz Daint“). It will crack the top 30, however and, as mentioned, be the fastest fusion research supercomputer.

Over 1,000 European and Japanese researchers will get access to the system, which is optimized for plasma physics and fusion energy calculations. “The speed and integrated software environment of the Cray XC50 will enhance QST’s infrastructure and allow researchers to speed time to discovery,” said Cray Japan’s Mamoru Nakano.

ITER is still a long way from even running, let alone heralding a breakthrough that will pave the way to commercial fusion reactors. Though it won’t be fully finished until 2035, scientists hope to start running experiments by 2025. Once commercial fusion reactors come online, they’ll be able to supply humanity with unlimited energy for potentially millions of years.

Recently, MIT announced that it would work on its own fusion project with the aim of bringing a 200 megawatt reactor online by the year 2033. It plans to use newly available superconducting materials and technology that can create magnetic fields four times stronger than any in use now. Such powerful magnetic fields are required to keep the explosive nuclear fusion reactions contained.

Russia’s Interfax News Agency reports that engineers at the All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF)—the Russian Federation Nuclear Center facility where scientists designed the Soviet Union’s first nuclear bomb—have been arrested for mining cryptocurrency with “office computing resources,” according to a spokesperson for the Institute. “There has been an unsanctioned attempt to use computer facilities for private purposes including so-called mining,” said Tatyana Zalesskaya, head of the Institute’s press service.

Zalesskaya did not say how many people were detained, and the Federal Security Service (FSB) has not issued a statement on the arrests or criminal charges pending. But reports indicate that the group was caught trying to harness the lab’s supercomputer to mine cryptocurrency.

The Institute is located in Sarov, a “closed” city east of Moscow where nuclear weapons research has been conducted since 1946. The facility is so secret that it was left off Soviet maps; Savrov is surrounded by fences and guarded by the Russian military accordingly. While the city is the home of Russia’s Nuclear Weapons Museum, don’t plan a visit anytime soon—access to Sarov is restricted, and no one who does not live in the city is allowed to visit without permission. Foreigners visiting on official business have to surrender their passports, cell phones, and other electronic devices at the city’s checkpoints.

Liqid and Orange Silicon Valley show off a ‘composable’ GPU supercomputer https://briefnews.eu/liqid-and-orange-silicon-valley-show-off-a-composable-gpu-supercomputer/ https://briefnews.eu/liqid-and-orange-silicon-valley-show-off-a-composable-gpu-supercomputer/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 14:19:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liqid-and-orange-silicon-valley-show-off-a-composable-gpu-supercomputer/

Liqid and Orange Silicon Valley have teamed up to create a prototype for a “composable” graphics supercomputer. That means it is a computer built with graphics chips that can scale from a small size to a very large size based on the demands of its users. The companies believe it could be used as an on-demand infrastructure for artificial intelligence, deep learning, virtual reality, and graphics rendering.

It’s one more project that could make companies more agile when they tap computing resources. The companies are showing off the prototype supercomputer as a demonstration of the next generation of graphics processing unit (GPU) computers, which can be used to render high-end graphics akin to something like Pixar’s next animated film. They are showing the demo at the Supercomputing 2017 conference in Denver, Colorado, this week.

It is a computer designed for the on-demand economy, sort of like Amazon Web Services, but for customers who need a lot of graphics processing. By “composable,” the companies mean that the system is modular, where you can add one or multiple graphics chips in a server board depending on what you need. It’s like using GPUs as a utility, where you can add or subtract GPUs depending on the job you need done. Another word for it is to “liquefy” infrastructure, or make it as flexible as water use at a utility, said Gabriel Sidhom, the vice president of technology at Orange Silicon Valley, in an interview.

“You can scale this liquified GPU infrastructure almost infinitely,” Sidhom said.

It’s an unusual project for Orange Silicon Valley, the research arm of European telecommunications carrier Orange (formerly France Telecom). Sidhom said that his company might benefit from such infrastructure over time. The idea is to use the parallel processing capability of GPUs to transcend the serial processing bottlenecks of central processing units (CPUs), allowing for much faster performance on massive, unstructured data sets such as visual recognition tasks. So far, by using GPU computing, Orange has reduced its infrastructure costs by 40 times, said Soumik Sinharoy, the senior product manager at Orange Silicon Valley.

Liqid’s composable platform makes it easy to mix and match GPUs in the data center, making it truly adaptive and “hot swappable,” or easy to plug in or take out in either Windows or Linux environments.

“We believe the future of the data center is composable,” said Jay Breakstone, the CEO of Liqid, in an interview. “We believe companies will have access to infinite GPUs. We always pondered that, when we build a server, will it always stay the same in the rack and never change? We built a flexible platform where you can dynamically add GPUs.”

The whole goal is to reduce the “lumpiness of infrastructure.” Five years ago, deployments of servers in data centers were rigid, where customers got one kind of CPU regardless of what kind of task they were running.

Sinharoy said that customers still can’t really make easy changes at the hardware level when their demand for infrastructure changes.

“We see a future where users can configure on demand at a bare metal level, at the rack level, and at the data center level,” Sinharoy said. “The vision is for a multipurpose, multi-tenant infrastructure. My users should be able to demand 20 or 30 GPUs at the click of a button, and they shouldn’t have to share that with any other users.”

Liqid has 38 employees. Both companies work with GPU vendors such as Nvidia, which has its own GeForce Grid technology, which enables a single GPU to be shared by multiple users for everything from games to other applications.

“The result is more utilization of resources,” said Breakstone.

It’s not clear exactly when the prototypes will become a business opportunity, the companies said. For now, they are just showing it off.

No one knows exactly what the total solar eclipse will look like until it actually happens on Monday.

But that hasn’t stopped computer scientists from guessing.

Nearly anyone in the US can see the moon partially block the sun on Monday, weather permitting. However, those lucky enough to be in the 2,800-mile-long, 70-mile-wide path of totality will see the moon completely block the sun.

Totality will last about two minutes on August 21, and during that time, onlookers will not only view the darkest shadow of the moon, but also the sun’s corona — a dim outer atmosphere of high-speed solar particles that’s normally invisible during the day.

The corona is somewhat unpredictable, though, since the sun is a giant, dynamic, white-hot ball of super-heated plasma. The star is constantly feeding the corona with high-speed particles and changing its appearance.

To figure out what the corona will look on Monday, a scientific research company called Predictive Science, Inc., enlisted the help of three supercomputers to simulate a visual forecast of totality.

“This is our final prediction of the solar corona for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse,” Predictive Science wrote on its website Thursday.

The 3D simulations take what is currently known about the sun — its magnetic field, output of particles, rotation rate, and more — and use mathematical models to push the fast forward button, according to a press release posted by the University of Texas at Austin. That university helped power the imagery with its Stampede2 supercomputer, in addition to the San Diego Supercomputer Center’s Comet and NASA’s Pleiades.

Here are a few of the simulations in the forecast and what they show.

This image shows roughly how the corona may appear to people on the ground if they look through a polarized “Newkirk” filter. You can see two lobes on the corona.

Totality’s brightness may resemble this image. “These are two different attempts to approximate what the human eye might see during the solar eclipse,” Predictive Science said.

Volvo will use NVIDIA’s supercomputer to power its self-driving cars in 2021 (NVDA) https://briefnews.eu/volvo-will-use-nvidias-supercomputer-to-power-its-self-driving-cars-in-2021-nvda/ https://briefnews.eu/volvo-will-use-nvidias-supercomputer-to-power-its-self-driving-cars-in-2021-nvda/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2017 06:11:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/volvo-will-use-nvidias-supercomputer-to-power-its-self-driving-cars-in-2021-nvda/ NVIDIA CEO Jensen HuangNVIDIA/Youtube

Nvidia announced its third automotive partnership this year as it looks to beat competitors like Intel in the race to power self-driving cars.

Nvidia will install its Drive PX supercomputer system in Volvo cars by 2021, Nvidia CEO and founder Jensen Huang said during Automobil Elektronik Kongress, a conference in Germany, Monday night pacific time. The company also boasts partnerships with Audi, Baidu, Tesla, and Toyota.

The move further positions Nvidia to take on Intel, which is co-developing the autonomous drive platform for BMW. Intel bought autonomous-drive company Mobileye for $ 15.3 billion in March.

Nvidia came to prominence two decades ago as a supplier of 3D graphics processing chips for the video game industry.

But the company has slowly worked its way into the auto industry, first by powering the graphics for in-vehicle display systems, like Tesla’s massive 17-inch touchscreen. Nvidia is now considered a key player developing the “brains” of self-driving cars.

The Drive PX uses artificial intelligence to process massive amounts of data so self-driving cars can react to difficult driving scenarios in a fraction of a second.

“The ability for our systems to now be able to sense what’s going on around car, to interpret it, to understand it, and take action in a 30th of a second is what is enabling autonomous vehicles on the road today,” Danny Shapiro, Nvidia’s senior director of automotive, previously told Business Insider.

Volvo has used Nvidia’s supercomputer for its Drive Me program — a 2017 trial that allows 100 people in Sweden to test self-driving, Volvo XC90 SUVs. Now Volvo will use the Drive PX in commercial vehicles in 2021.

Volvo is also working with Autoliv, a Swedish manufacturer of auto safety systems, to develop its autonomous driving platform.

Nvidia also announced partnerships with Audi and Toyota this year.

Tesla currently uses the Drive PX 2, Nvidia’s next-generation computing system, in its Model S and Model X vehicles.

The Drive PX 2, which will also power Tesla’s Model 3 when it launches in July, is the brain running Tesla’s semi-autonomous Autopilot system. It will also power the self-driving capabilities in Tesla vehicles in the future.

German auto supplier ZF said at CES that it will run its ProAI self-driving system on Nvidia’s PX 2 platform in commercial vehicles in 2020.

“I think what’s significant about this announcement is we see a full range of self-driving systems driven from the Nvidia drive architecture,” Shapiro said on a Monday call with journalists. “The full power of Drive PX is being brought to bear across all segments of the autonomous vehicle market.”
