Few names in Chevy lore carry as much weight as Yenko. Yenko Chevrolet in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, was known for producing some of the sweetest and most sought after muscle cars of all time, including some tuned Camaros and Corvairs. Now Specialty Vehicle Engineering is offering an 800 horsepower supercharged Yenko/SC Chevy Silverado, a quick follow-up to its 1,000 horsepower Yenko Stage II Camaro.

The Yenko name dates all the way back to 1929 when a man named Frank Yenko opened a Durant dealer in Pennsylvania. That dealer eventually folded, but Yenko followed it up a few years later with two Chevrolet dealerships, the second of which was run by Yenko’s son Don. That’s the dealer that built all the hot rods and muscle cars. Yenko business was sold in 1982, though the name has cropped up a few times over the years, licensed by various shops.

This Silverado follows the same formula as most other Yenko-branded products. The truck uses a 6.8-liter GM LT1 V8 with an aluminum block, a forged-steel crank and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, ported heads, an upgraded fuel system and a tune. The coup de gras is a custom supercharger that brings the total engine output to 800 horsepower, though there isn’t a torque figure listed.

Other performance upgrades include stainless steel headers, high-flow cats, stainless steel exhaust, six-piston Brembo brakes, 22-inch torque thrust-style wheels with Michelin rubber and lowered suspension (2 inches up front, 5 inches in the rear). Visually, the Yenko/SC Silverado gets Yenko cowl and side stripes, an SYC graphic on the hood, Yenko badges on the grille, door and tailgate, and some other 800 horsepower and 6.8-liter badges and crests.

Now, this package isn’t cheap. It’s $ 46,995 on top of the price of a regular-cab Silverado. There are even a few options including a painted supercharger or some extremely sweet houndstooth seats. The truck does come with a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty. There will only be a handful built, so get your $ 10,000 deposit ready.

We’ve long heard from our sources that the forthcoming Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will once again be motivated by a supercharged V-8 engine, this time code-named Predator, and a photo currently circulating on Instagram all but confirms it.

The image came to our attention by way of Instagram user mustangmannylv, who informed Car and Driver that he originally found the salacious snapshot on Facebook via a post in the Ford Mustang GT350 Owners group. The picture appears to show the top of a Roots-type supercharger that has been cast with the classic Shelby snake and “5.2 L” to denote the displacement of the engine it’s strapped to.

Expected to share its block and other bits with the 526-hp naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-8 in the GT350, the supercharged V-8 in the GT500 is likely to forgo the GT350’s racing-derived flat-plane crankshaft for a more conventional cross-plane unit. The forced-induction V-8’s more traditional crankshaft design is sure to result in slower engine speeds compared to that of the rip-snorting naturally aspirated V-8 in the GT350, which can rev past 8000 rpm.

Despite this, we still expect the GT500 to push out enough power to keep both the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat on their toes. Those cars’ respective supercharged V-8 engines produce 650 and 707 horsepower. Furthermore, we anticipate that the new GT500 will far surpass the 662 horsepower produced by the supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 that powered the previous-generation GT500. Ford is currently keeping mum on the forthcoming model; however, we reckon the Blue Oval will have more to say about its flagship pony car at the Detroit auto show in January.

There are many things we like about our 2018 Jaguar F-Pace long-term car, as well as some things we don’t care for, but easily one of the best things about it is the engine. Under the hood is the 380-horsepower supercharged V6 that Jaguar offers on other models. That amount of power would be fun in just about any car with any engine, but there are specific reasons why this particular engine is special, and it’s because of that supercharger.

Supercharged engines have a very different character than increasingly common turbo engines. One of the most noticeable differences being engine response. Unlike turbo engines, the F-Pace’s V6 feels hardwired to your foot. Every extra millimeter of pedal travel yields a slightly greater amount of tug. And the tug is felt immediately. Even the best turbo engines have a hard time recreating this response. The power band is very linear, as well, so you know exactly what you’re getting every time you hit the gas.

The engine is wonderfully torquey, too. Because the Jaguar’s engine uses a classic Roots-type blower, there’s a major improvement in low-end torque. This means that our F-Pace has loads of grunt for punting around at low-rpm and can seriously move when tromping on the gas. And because of the near-instant throttle response and linear power band, it doesn’t slam you in the back unexpectedly like some turbo engines do.

Despite how great these supercharged engines are to experience, we’re concerned that supercharged engines like this may disappear in all but ultra-limited production, high-performance cars such as the Chevy Corvette Z06 and Cadillac CTS-V. The reason being that car companies have to keep making cars more fuel efficient and lower emitting. Putting a supercharger on an engine is adding a handicap, since it takes engine power to spin the belt-driven supercharger. And when a turbo, which uses wasted energy from exhaust gas to spin the compressor and built boost, can effectively do the same thing, it’s hard to make a case for a supercharger.

We won’t give up hope completely, though. Mazda is using superchargers on its spark-assisted compression ignition gasoline engines. And while we’re not sure how powerful and sporty those will be, Mazda has said that it’s going with superchargers for exactly the reasons we like the Jaguar engine: smooth power and fast throttle response. They’re also expected to be 10- to 30-percent more efficient than regular gasoline engines, so they should meet regulations for a while into the future. Until those engines roll out though, we’ll continue to enjoy the one in our Jag.

At a refuge where three orphans were being prepared for release into the wild, head otter-warden Mark was struggling with his twin urges to love the creatures and to do the best thing for them. He imitated a mother otter’s soothing calls to calm them, he fed them chopped up fish and formula milk.

Later, he taught them to swim and hunt. The latter seems to come naturally but swimming, oddly, is something baby otters have to be nudged into learning.

Mark refused to give these orphans names. Doing that would encourage him to bond with them and if they bonded back they’d have no chance in the wild.

From the creatures’ extraordinary heat-trapping fur to their all-terrain design and their commendable team spirit, this film abounded in otter-based insights. It also told us something important about people, though. Naming is caring.

In the Romany spoken by British gypsies a hedgehog’s name is “pal of the bor”, or “brother of the hedge”. Naturalist Steve Backshall swapped the jungles and mountains for suburban Surrey where other folk have strong brotherly feelings towards the spiky creatures, too.

Meet The Hedgehogs (Channel 5) provided a surprising chance to meet Queen guitarist Brian May, whose home turf Windlesham has become Britain’s first hedgehog-friendly village. It would be fair to say that, from his PhD in astrophysics to his collection of early photographs and his self-built guitars, May is a man of many talents. He’s also adept at using his fame to help causes, such as our increasingly endangered brother of the hedge.

Threats include slug pellets, people giving them milk (poisonous!) and lawnmowers. Given that the hedgehog has been around since the sabre-toothed tiger, it seems unjust they should be wiped out because people want tidy lawns. It reminded us to treasure, not just the wildlife in our gardens but the people who devote so much to it.

Take Elaine of Lincolnshire, whose house had become a refuge for hedgehogs. She couldn’t explain why she liked them and admitted they gave no affection back.

If it seems like we live in a dog-eat-dog world, watch people like Elaine, getting up every two hours to feed an orphan hedgehog, or Monique, rubbing coconut oil into one who’d lost his spines. We humans are naturally wonderful too.
