Victory saw United, who had started the day ahead of Spurs on goal difference alone, go three points clear of their London rivals.
France international Martial, currently battling to win a regular starting place under Jose Mourinho, did his chances no harm with the manner of his 81st minute winning goal, even if it was a curiously direct affair.
A long kick forward by goalkeeper David De Gea was headed on by Romelu Lukaku and Martial sprinted away from the Spurs back line before calmly beating the keeper with an excellent finish.
It was a disappointing way for Spurs to lose a game and the fact that the London club were without injured leading striker Harry Kane is bound to revive the debate over whether their bid to be crowned champions is too reliant on the England forward.
After being widely criticised for their negative approach in the recent goalless draw at Liverpool, United showed more ambition against another of the division’s top clubs on their own turf, although the result was still a lack of real goalscoring chances and entertainment.
Within two minutes, Lukaku chased onto a through ball and his low, driven cross-shot was well cut out by the alert Hugo Lloris, with Marcus Rashford poised in the middle in front of an open net.
Ashley Young’s penetrating run might have carved out a chance but his drag-back passed through the area and narrowly out of reach of three team mates before a 35-yard Rashford free-kick was turned around the post by the diving goalkeeper.
Spurs, understandably given the absence of Kane, adopted a more cautious approach but grew into the game as the half progressed.
Early chances were limited to long shots — Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko forcing De Gea into simple stops and Toby Alderweireld shooting into the side-netting from outside the area.
But by the time Christian Eriksen floated over a delightful pass in the direction of Dele Alli, who was denied the chance to volley on goal by two defenders, Spurs looked comfortable.
When Tottenham did create a real chance, it was in bizarre circumstances as De Gea made a routine catch from a Ben Davies cross but collided with Phil Jones and dropped the ball.
– Young and Alli clash –
Alli was alert and passed the ball back to Sissoko who fired well over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
Soon, Young and Alli were involved in an altercation, after the United man was accidentally hit in the face by Aurier, with players from both teams squaring off in an incident which breathed much-needed life into the game.
Tottenham reacted first as Alli saw his header, from a Davies corner, blocked by Eric Bailly and then the England midfielder found space for a shot which failed to trouble De Gea.
Another Davies corner again caused problems before De Gea caught Eric Dier’s hooked shot towards goal.
United opened the second half in more committed fashion and, finally, after 54 minutes, the home crowd had something to cheer as the Reds created three quick chances in succession.
A mistake by Davies presented Henrikh Mkhitaryan with an opportunity for a shot which Lloris fumbled. But for Davies atoned for his error with a superb cover-tackle to deny Rashford a simple goal from the rebound.
The attack continued with Ander Herrera setting up Antonio Valencia, whose shot was blocked.
Lukaku then shrugged off Jan Vertonghen before sending a low shot just wide of the goal.
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock shortly before Martial scored the only goal of the game.
Alli flicked agonisingly wide after a brilliant chip forward from Eriksen and Lukaku headed against the post from Jesse Lingard’s cross.
Media frenzy surrounding the case forced the hearing to be moved to a larger courtroom in Copenhagen on Saturday.
“I would like to have my say,” Madsen, 46, told reporters and the public at the courtroom after the prosecutor said he faced “preliminary charges [of manslaughter] for having killed in an unknown way and in an unknown place Kim Isabell Frerika Wall of Sweden.”
The judge insisted, however, that initial statements should be given behind closed doors. After the hearing, Madsen, who has been a suspect since Friday, was placed in detention for 24 days.
Friends, relatives and colleagues of Wall, who had been educated at Columbia University, Sorbonne and the London School of Economics, and worked as a freelance journalist, have bombarded social media with requests for information about her. Her family has also released a statement saying they still hoped that she would be found “safe and well.” Wall has not been reachable by phone since shortly after boarding Madsen’s UC3 Nautilus submarine as part of an assignment for “Wired” magazine on Thursday evening.
On Saturday, the rescue vessel Vina recovered the UC3 Nautilus submarine, which is being treated as a possible crime scene, from the bottom of the sea near the island of Dragoer south of Copenhagen. The 18-meter-long, 40-ton vessel, built in 2008 with help from crowdfunding, was at the time the biggest private submarine in the world, and made its designer and captain a national celebrity.
The disappearance of Wall, whose articles have been published by the New York Times, the Guardian and other high-profile publications, was first reported by her boyfriend, who called the police after she failed to return on Thursday night.
Unable to contact the Nautilus, police began a rescue operation involving two helicopters, three ships, and multiple volunteer vessels.
Kristian Isbak, who runs a marine company, says that he saw the moment the Nautilus sank on Friday morning.
Isbak responded to the Navy’s call to help locate the missing submarine, noticed the vessel on the sonar, and then spotted its sail above the water.
“We realized that it was Peter Madsen’s submarine. A man sat in the tower, he climbed down and then up into the tower again,” he told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet. “There was a powerful pressure wave around the submarine. It began to sink. Madsen stood quite calmly in the tower. When the submarine had sunk so much that he could swim, it only took 10-15 seconds, Madsen leaped into the water and paddled to a rescue boat.”
Madsen gave a thumbs-up to gathered reporters when he came ashore, though admitted to local broadcaster TV2 that he was “sad” to have lost the Nautilus.
When asked about the whereabouts of Wall, he claimed that he dropped her off near a restaurant on Refshaleon Island in Copenhagen harbor on Thursday evening, and then gave his own account of the sinking.
“I was out on a rehearsal trip, tinkering with different things in the submarine. Then a defect happened with a ballast tank which wasn’t that serious, until I tried to repair it. Then it suddenly became very serious,” Madsen told TV2. “After that, it took 30 seconds for Nautilus to sink. I couldn’t close the catch or anything. But that might be OK, as I would still be down there then.”
Danish daily Ekstra Bladet reported police sources as claiming that Madsen was suspected of intentionally sinking the vessel to cover up his tracks.

Who would have thought that a movie based on a Disneyland theme park ride would spawn a multi-billion dollar franchise?
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl did exactly that, boosting the careers of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly – and now 14 years later they’re all back for a fifth outing.
Known as the lengthy Dead Men Tell No Tales in US, Salazar’s Revenge is another standalone story for Captain Jack, just like 2011’s On Stranger Tides.
Set two decades after the original trilogy, Jack finds himself pursed by Javier Bardem’s ghostly Capitaine Salazar, seeking revenge for how the pirate tricked him and his crew into sailing into the Devil’s Triangle.
Joined by Brenton Thwaites’ Henry Turner, the son of Knightley’s Elizabeth and Bloom’s cursed Will – who both briefly cameo – Jack must seek the Poseidon’s Trident to defeat Salazar.
The two are joined by Skins veteran Kaya Scodelario as Carina, an educated astronomer who keeps getting mistaken for being a witch.
Series regular Geoffrey Rush returns as a newly gold-encrusted Hector Barbossa – having acquired Blackbeard’s ship in the last film.
Ever the impeccable character actor, Rush’s pirate antics actually outshine that of Depp, even showing a touching emotional side to the grimy old crook.
Meanwhile Kevin McNally returns as Joshamee Gibbs and Paul McCartney follows Keith Richards’ rock star cameo, playing Jack’s uncle.
It’s a short scene, but one in which the Beatle does a much better acting job that David Beckham’s embarrassing attempts in King Arthur.
As Pirates 5 kicks off it’s hard not to compare it to the original, with the main baddies being a group of cursed pirates once again, led by Bardem’s creepy villain.
Depp’s Jack is always a welcome sight for franchise fans, although his slapstick frolicking is borderline pantomime this time as he spends a lot his time falling over.
Thwaites’ Turner doesn’t particularly add much, but Kaya’s feisty Carina shines as one the best heroines of the blockbuster season, taking the lead in the mission to find the Trident, while surrounded by clueless men.
Directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg do manage to keep energy and entertainment levels up throughout.
However the film never quite captures the spark and magic of the original movie, falling into the mediocre visual effects overload of the previous sequels.
Really Salazar’s Revenge is reserved for diehard Pirates fans looking for a bit of lighthearted fun, rather than its aim of rebooting the franchise for a new generation – who would probably be left in a convoluted muddle anyway.
Having nicely rounded up plot strands from as far back as a decade ago, perhaps this is a good place to finally raise the Jolly Roger and actually let Captain Jack sail off into the sunset?
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge will be released in UK on May 25, 2017.

Super Rugby: Waratahs pay for kick off blunder.

The Blues celebrate Rieko Ioane’s try as Israel Folau contemplates another defeat.
LOOKING around the Allianz Stadium pitch, the problem with Australian rugby was staring us right in the face, lurking near the right touchline.
His name, Rieko Ioane.
He is just 20 years old, yet he monstered the seasoned Waratahs veterans in front of him.
Ioane is playing his first full season of Super Rugby, having graduated from the New Zealand sevens system.

ANOTHER DEFEAT: Blues brothers brong dowm bumbling Tahs
He scored two spectacular tries, ran for 170 metres and made 12 tackle busts.
And the problem with Australian rugby is this; where is our Rieko Ioane?
There is none. Not one player coming through the Super ranks this year in Australian teams threatens defensive lines and shows the potential Ioane does.
And this has been happening for years.
Australia couldn’t find a Nehe Milner-Skudder or Ardie Savea in recent years either.
So while the Waratahs made it a respectable loss of 40-33 to the Blues after a second-half fightback, the defeat was inevitable when they trailed 26-0 at half-time.
The Blues blitzed the Tahs with the help of Ioane’s brilliance.
New Zealand teams are now 17-0 against Australian sides in 2017. The gap has never been wider, and shows no signs of closing this year or next.
On a miserable Saturday, South Africa’s Lions steamrolled the Melbourne Rebels 47-10.

Then the Chiefs hammered Queensland Reds 46-17 in New Plymouth, before NSW put out 40 minutes of rubbish in front of their exasperated supporters.
At the same time, the Australia under-20s side was taking on their Kiwi counterparts on the Gold Coast.
New Zealand strolled home 43-6.
There were a few youngsters on show who could be the next Ioane – none of them wearing gold jerseys.

Donggeochado (South Korea) (AFP) – Salvage operators began raising South Korea’s sunken Sewol ferry Wednesday, officials said, nearly three years after the disaster killed more than 300 people and dealt a crippling blow to now-ousted president Park Geun-Hye.
Emotional parents of victims — the vast majority of the dead in the country’s worst-ever maritime tragedy were schoolchildren — urged people to pray for a successful recovery.
The vessel was lying more than 40 metres (130 feet) below the waves off southwestern South Korea and the operation, originally scheduled for last year, had been pushed back several times because of adverse weather.
It is thought that nine bodies still unaccounted for may be trapped inside the sunken ship, and raising the ferry intact has been a key demand of the victims’ families.
“I am a mother who just really misses her daughter. Please pray for us so we can go home with Eun-Hwa,” said Lee Keum-Hui, one of a handful of relatives who have been living in makeshift homes at Paengmok, the closest port to the wreck, since the accident.
“We will be grateful if you pray with us so that the last remaining victims can return to their families,” she said, breaking down.
Other bereaved family members have been maintaining a vigil at a camp on a hilltop on Donggeochado, the nearest island to the site, just 1.5 kilometres away.
Yellow ribbons — a symbol for the victims of the deadly disaster — hang on nearby trees, their colour faded by the course of time.
“My heart is pounding,” said father Jung Seong-Wook of the decision to go ahead with the lift. “I have mixed feelings that I cannot put into words. I’m also a little scared.”
In a tense atmosphere during the day, another father nervously watched through binoculars, trying to get a glimpse of the operation. Some 50 bereaved family members went out to sea by boat to watch the proceedings, he added.
Two enormous barges were positioned on either side of the 6,825-tonne ship and air bags inserted for the salvage effort, which is being led by a Chinese consortium.
Beams were installed by digging through the seabed underneath the wreck, which was lying on its side, and cables attached to bring it painstakingly towards the surface.
Once two-thirds of it is exposed, a semi-submersible will be positioned underneath to raise it out of the water and transport it to the port of Mokpo to carry out investigations and search for the missing.
A senior official from the maritime ministry said it took three hours to raise the wreck one metre off the seabed in what was initially a feasibility test.
The ministry then decided to go ahead with the full lifting, it said in a statement. The operation is expected to take three days.
The disaster and its aftermath gripped South Korea and overshadowed the presidency of Park, who stayed at her residence for seven hours in the crucial initial phase of the sinking.
She has never specified what she was doing, sparking wild rumours including a tryst and cosmetic surgery.
A permanent Sewol protest site targeting her was subsequently set up in the center of Seoul, with effigies of the head of state on display alongside pictures of dead schoolchildren.
Negligence over the sinking was one of the grounds for which parliament impeached Park in December, although the constitutional court ruled that it was not an impeachable offense when it upheld her dismissal on other charges earlier this month.
Donggeochado island has a population of only around 300, but the once-a-day ferry to it was packed with reporters Wednesday and at least one outside broadcast truck.
Investigations into the disaster, in which 304 people died, concluded it was largely man-made — the cumulative result of an illegal redesign, an overloaded cargo bay, inexperienced crew and a questionable relationship between the ship operators and state regulators.
Even though the vessel took around three hours to sink, those on board were never ordered to evacuate, while the crew escaped to safety.
Captain Lee Jun-Seok was sentenced to life in prison for “murder through willful negligence” and 14 other crew members given terms ranging from two to 12 years.
