The ministry has demanded an explanation from the Norwegian ambassador Rune Resaland over the arrest of the man identified as M. Bochkarev at Oslo airport. Moscow wants the “absurd” and “fictitious spy charges” against the man to be dropped and that he be released “immediately.”
Bochkarev travelled to Norway to take part in an international seminar held in the Norwegian parliament on September 20-21. The man, who works in the Central Office of the Russian Senate, was invited to the event by the European Center for Parliamentary Research and Documentation, the ministry’s statement says, adding that the event was public and was attended by “parliamentary representatives from a dozen countries.”
“It is incomprehensible why the presence of a Russian representative at the seminar has led to such provocation,” the ministry said, adding that a “wave of spy hysteria” that has recently engulfed the West had taken a particularly “despicable form” in Norway. It also said that Oslo’s move would not be “left unanswered.”
Norway then rushed to explain that the arrest of the Russian man accused of “gathering some data” has nothing to do with politics and is treated as a criminal case. “This is not a political issue,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg told the Norwegian NTB news agency.
Several western countries have, indeed, gone on an apparent spy hunt, with mainstream media at times dominated by headlines on alleged “Russian agents.” Swiss and Dutch newspapers reported mid-September that the two countries carried out a joint operation with the UK, resulting in the Netherlands expelling two suspected Russian spies in March. This was later confirmed by Switzerland’s intelligence agency, which claimed it had foiled “a Russian plot,” targeting a Swiss laboratory which tests nerve agents such as Novichok.
The details provided by the western media and officials were so scant that it prompted the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to call on them to “present some facts” first, so that Moscow could respond to these allegations.
Meanwhile, the British authorities tirelessly accuse Moscow of being behind the poisoning of the former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter. Most recently, London presented the CCTV footage of two men it claimed were agents of the Russian military intelligence, the GRU, and accused the two of poisoning the Skripals.
The men, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, gave an interview to RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, where they said they claimed to be businessmen and tourists that got wrongly accused by the UK. Their explanation, however, appeared to be not convincing enough for London, which immediately rushed to denounce it as a blow to the “public’s intelligence.”
Meanwhile, across the pond, the US authorities are still looking for proof of Russia’s alleged interference in the US 2016 elections but have failed to find any so far. As part of the Russiagate scandal sweeping the US, a Russian gun rights activist, Maria Butina, got arrested. Butina, who has been accused of being an unregistered Russian lobbyist and basically a Russian agent, has been kept in prison for more than two months without any solid evidence of her guilt being presented.

You’ll have to be creative to serve a secretive online organization like Wikileaks whose founder is hiding out in a foreign embassy. It definitely became an issue for the Democratic National Committee, which filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the group for the role it played in the 2016 cyberattack that targeted the political party. Now, the DNC has finally served the organization, and you can even see it for yourself… because it all went down on Twitter.
International law firm Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC recently signed up for an account on the platform for that specific purpose. It tweeted Wikileaks with a message that says “By Court order, you are being served with the following legal documents,” followed by several links that point to digital copies of court summons and other relevant files.
@wikileaks By Court order, you are being served with the following legal documents: https://t.co/ICg8qWnsUy, https://t.co/ZP2tTPJ4pb, https://t.co/RKue30s4hM, https://t.co/q5g0G1rQpQ.
All of these documents may be found here: https://t.co/NOCgvQhh2j.— Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll Process Server (@ProcessServiceC) August 10, 2018
If you’ll recall, Wikileaks published thousands of emails stolen from DNC’s servers during the 2016 Presidential Election campaign. The party says the organization got the documents from the hackers calling themselves Guccifer 2.0, an outfit believed to be operated by the Russian intelligence agency GRU.
While going on Twitter to serve a summons is certainly unorthodox, the DNC assures that the method is perfectly legal and valid. According to CBS News, the party filed a motion with a Manhattan federal court last month to allow it to serve the organization on the social network, which a judge obviously granted. A spokesperson told Gizmodo that they chose to go that route because Wikileaks was being unresponsive and is more likely to read the summons if sent through the website. The organization is very active on Twitter, after all, and frequently tweets out links to its newest leaks.

Women get sexually harassed the world over, but in Egypt, the statistics are particularly unnerving: 99.3 percent of Egyptian women report experiencing some form of sexual harassment, from verbal abuse to physical assault, according to a 2013 U.N. study. For Shadw Helal, a 22-year-old medical student at Cairo University, the problem turned personal last year when a friend was walking in the city and was suddenly surrounded by six men. She managed to run away, but the fear lingered for weeks.
Moved by the incident, Helal decided to create Rescue, a mobile app women can use to issue alerts when they feel unsafe, summoning rescuers to come to their aid.
“I felt very sorry for my friend and thought about what if this happened to me, I may not be able to manage the situation alone,” Helal says. She was aware of an app aimed at fighting harassment called Street Pal, which allows users to notify a trusted contact in threatening situations, but Helal wanted to go broader by notifying not one person but a group of volunteer rescuers in the vicinity. After partnering with a mobile developer friend and conducting market research, she launched her self-funded app and made it available for Android phones.
The app invites users to sign up as a woman seeking protection or as a rescuer. (Female users are automatically set as rescuers too because, as Helal says, “if you ask for help, you’d better provide help.”) For men to sign up as rescuers, they must first scan their IDs to discourage potential predators from using the app.
For now, the Rescue app covers more than 200 square miles of Cairo, called the “most dangerous megacity for women.”
Once registered, any woman who feels unsafe on the streets can open the app on her phone and either press a button or use a voice command to send an alert to the nearest rescuers (using GPS technology). For now, Helal explains, the app sends alerts to people within a 2-kilometer radius, but as the number of users and rescuers grows, the distance from user to respondent will decrease.
As soon as a rescuer accepts the request for help, the woman is notified, and the respondent sees a map showing her location. There are no guidelines instructing rescuers what to do if the harasser is still there when they arrive: “We can’t say to them what to do because it could be illegal. But we may create guidelines in the future written by a lawyer,” Helal says.
Launched in October, the app currently has over 3,000 registered users — most between the ages of 18 and 35 — and about one-third are male rescuers. The majority of users are concentrated in downtown Cairo, Dokki, Shubra, Nasr City, Heliopolis, Maadi, Helwan and other sections of Giza.
Admittedly, 3,000 is a tiny number in a city of 9.5 million, but it’s a start. “It won’t solve the problem but it will reduce it,” says Helal, whose focus is raising awareness of the threat women face in their everyday lives as much as exposing and punishing harassers.
In 2014, an amendment was added to Egypt’s penal code imposing jail terms of no less than six months and/or fines of LE3,000 to LE5,000 ($ 170 to $ 290) on anyone found guilty of sexual harassment. Unfortunately, the law is rarely applied because many women are reluctant to speak out in a society that promotes silence over the possibility of scandal. In 2016, for instance, only 116 cases of sexual harassment were reported. The number more than doubled from the 51 cases reported the previous year, but the statement released by Egypt’s Administrative Prosecution Authority acknowledges that the figures do not accurately reflect the extent of the problem because too many women fail to file reports.
For now, the Rescue app covers more than 200 square miles of Cairo, called the “most dangerous megacity for women” in a survey conducted in October by Thomson Reuters Foundation. But as Sawssan Zaki, a writer for Women News Network, points out, women being harassed on city streets need help fast. If someone feels threatened, “she will need immediate help and may not be able to press a button and wait for a rescuer who may be as far as 2 kilometers away.”
Zaki also notes that while many Egyptians have mobile phones, not everyone uses Android. “It may be a good idea for some women,” Zaki says, “but how will it benefit old or poor women who can’t use or don’t have a smartphone? I believe that we still need to fight sexual harassment on the ground rather than via mobile technology.”
But mobile technology exists, even if it is imperfect, and a 2017 report found that there are more than 100 million mobile subscribers in Egypt, up from 96 million in June 2016. Included in that number, however, are people using older cellphone models that lack smart technology.
Still, Helal believes Rescue will benefit Egyptian women, with or without smartphones, simply by raising awareness of the risks they face in public — and the need for others to intervene to protect them and devise other, better solutions.
“As long as there is no intervention, there is nothing new,” she says, adding, “I’m trying to change the mentality of people and the way they think toward sexual harassment.” The problem may be rampant, she says, but it shouldn’t be passively endured, or condoned.
Mariam Roushdy, a 32-year-old Rescue user, says the app makes her feel safe when she’s alone in public because she can summon help wherever she might be. “Many people thought about making applications that help us choose restaurants or find better transportation options,” Roushdy tells OZY, “but no one thought about women’s safety like Rescue.”
Looking toward an idealized future, Helal imagines someday women will no longer need her app. But for now, she is preparing to launch an IOS version.

Tehran has strongly condemned the Friday incident at the London Embassy, urging British law enforcement to provide proper security for the diplomatic facility. Shortly after the incident, the UK Ambassador to Iran was summoned to Iran’s Foreign Ministry to provide explanations over the incident.
“Immediately after the incident was reported, Dr. Araqchi, the [Iranian] deputy foreign minister for political affairs, expressed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strong protest to the British ambassador to Tehran and demanded that the UK police fully protect our diplomats in London and immediately deal with the assailants,” the ministry’s spokesman, Bahram Qassemi said, adding that the UK envoy, Nicholas Hopton, offered an official apology.
Late on Friday, four assailants got onto the balcony of the embassy, taking down the Iranian flag and erecting banners of UK-based radical Shia Muslim Khoddam Al-Mahdi’s organization. The group was filmed shouting slogans and waving their flags from the balcony. The men were eventually detained by the police.
Slow actions of London police, who managed to capture the trespassers only “several hours after the attack” constituted a failure “to observe the international law,” spokesman for the Iranian government, Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, said in the aftermath of the incident, as quoted by the Mehr news agency. The official vowed Iran’s’ “decisive response” to the incident without providing any details.
The assailants have been promptly released on bail, IRNA news agency reported, citing a Metropolitan Police spokesperson. The assailants were 29, 18, 17 and 16 years old, and their identities have not been disclosed. An investigation into the incident is underway.
The Khoddam Al-Mahdi group, claiming to follow the ideas of the late Shia Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Al-Shirazi, was founded by UK-based radical preacher Sheikh Yasser Habib. The Sheikh has repeatedly expressed quite controversial views on Muslim history and insulted the Prophet Muhammad’s companions, drawing criticism from both Sunnis and Shias.

Last week, the US intelligence community, in their Worldwide Threat Assessment report, listed President Rodrigo Duterte as one of the leaders in Southeast Asia who continue to pose a “threat” to democracy and human rights. The assessment suggested the 72-year-old leader could “suspend” the country’s constitution and impose nationwide martial law. It also accused Duterte of using social media to spread government views and to counter online criticism of the government.
The tiny mention of Duterte in the 28-page report struck the heart of the Philippine administration. Taking it as an insult, Manila summoned the US ambassador to the Philippines on Thursday to explain the US intelligence assessment and to preserve a thaw in relations witnessed under Trump.
After US Ambassador Sung Kim “explained the nature of the report” to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, the two countries “discussed shared interests and possibilities for expanding our partnership,” the US embassy said in a statement. The US side confirmed its commitment to collaboration and reaffirmed the “strength of the broad and deep bilateral relationship.”
Following the meeting, the Philippine side urged its embassy staff in the US to contact members of the intelligence community to provide them with “accurate” picture of Duterte’s reforms in the country.
“Medialdea instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs, through our Philippine embassy in Washington, DC, to coordinate and engage with the US agencies involved in the writing of the assessment,” presidential palace spokesman Harry Roque said, following Thursday’s meeting. “Medialdea further directed our embassy officials and staff in the US to provide the latter accurate information on the realities happening on the ground in the Philippines.”
Following the publication of the US intelligence report, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo defended the Philippine president, saying his policies are only targeting “criminal elements, drug lords [and] corrupt government officials.”
“An autocracy is not prevalent, as they would like everyone to believe. Our media are still able to broadcast and print what they want, ‘fake news’ included. Our judiciary and the courts are functioning as usual. Our legislature remains independent and basic services are still being delivered,” Roque noted on Wednesday. “There is no revolutionary government or nationwide martial law, which US intelligence officials are saying that the President might declare or impose.”
Duterte declared martial law in the southern part of the country last year, in response to a siege in Marawi which was conducted by a militant group linked to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. Martial law in that area has been extended through the end of 2018.
The Philippines’ president has consistently made headlines since coming into office in mid-2016 on a vow to end the country’s drug problem. His brutal crackdown has seen over 4,000 suspected drug users and dealers killed, many of whom were murdered by “unidentified gunmen.”
Duterte has also become known for his no-holds-barred rhetoric, calling former US President Barack Obama a “son of a b**ch” and telling him to “go to hell.” But his anti-American stance witnessed a metamorphosis after Donald Trump assumed office. His affection towards Trump revolves around the fact that the US leader has shown no interest in openly criticizing the drug war. In an April phone call with Duterte, Trump even reportedly congratulated him for doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem.”

The Turkish government called on the Dutch charge d‘affaires in Ankara on Saturday to express its anger at two bills proposed by the Christian Union party, the first of which would formally classify the events of 1915, when 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire, as a genocide. The second bill would call on a Dutch official to be present during the annual remembrance day in Armenia on April 24. At present, 23 countries, including Russia, recognize the 1915 killings as a genocide. The Turkish authorities, however, dispute the Armenian version of events, arguing that there were atrocities on both sides, and bitterly contest all charges of genocide.
]]>The Pakistani government, led by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, is set to convene the emergency meeting shortly after US President Donald Trump said in a tweet that Pakistan had provided “nothing but lies and deceit” in return for vast amount of financial aid from Washington over the past 15 years.

In the tweet, Trump said the US “has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools.” The government in Islamabad gives “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help,” the US president stated, adding: “No more!”

Apart from the emergency cabinet meeting, there will also be a parliamentary meeting to craft a joint strategy over the issue, Pakistan Today reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Pakistan’s army leadership is also set to meet soon, as the National Security Committee convenes an emergency meeting to be attended by top military officials, as well as high-ranked civil officials, according to the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif took to Twitter to fire back at Trump’s outburst, saying that Pakistan would soon respond. “We will reveal the truth to the entire world. We will separate fact from fiction,” he wrote.

Speaking to local media, he accused the US of aiding and abetting terrorists that were making incursions into Pakistan. “US forces based in Afghanistan also overlooked safe havens of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which has killed thousands of Pakistanis,” he told a private TV channel, referring to a Taliban-affiliated militant group based in Pakistan’s volatile region bordering Afghanistan, as cited by the newspaper.
On Tuesday, Pakistan also summoned US Ambassador David Hale, the Deccan Herald reported, citing an embassy spokesman who confirmed that the diplomat had visited the Foreign Ministry but offered no details, adding: “We don’t have any comment on the substance of the meeting.”
After the 9/11 attacks, Washington forged a strategic alliance with Islamabad to help its fight against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants. Pakistan also enjoys certain privileges as one of 16 US ‘Non-NATO Major Allies.’
However, relations between Washington and Islamabad began to sour after Trump took office. Last August, he unveiled the US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia, which slammed Pakistan for “sheltering terrorists” and threatened to reduce aid to the country if it continues to “harbor criminals and terrorists.”
At that time, Washington also decided to withhold $ 255 million in military assistance until Pakistan did more to combat terrorism. Islamabad responded to the move, saying it did not need the US aid.
Islamabad also dismissed US accusations of turning a blind eye to Islamist insurgency and lambasted Washington for neglecting civilians who have been killed on its soil because of American drone strikes.

Egypt summoned the ambassadors from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands on Sunday, and is also going to summon the ambassadors of the UK and Canada, to protest a statement in which the above-mentioned countries condemned the detention of a human rights lawyer, Ibrahim Metwaly. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has slammed the Western statement as “a blatant and unacceptable interference in domestic affairs and the work of the judiciary.” Metwaly was helping with an investigation into the death of Italian student Giulio Regeni, whose body was discovered in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo in 2016, with signs of extensive torture, according to Reuters. Judicial sources told the news agency that he was detained on charges of spreading false news and joining an illegal group. The human rights advocate, who founded the Association of the Families of the Disappeared, was detained by airport security in September while heading to Geneva to attend a UN conference.
