Two weeks after Tamar Braxton was hospitalized in Los Angeles for attempting suicide, the former Real co-host has released a powerful statement about reality television’s impact on her mental health.

“I was betrayed, taken advantage of, overworked, and underpaid,” Braxton wrote Thursday on social media. “I wrote a letter over two months ago asking to be freed from what I believed was excessive and unfair. I explained in personal detail the demise I was experiencing. My cry for help went totally ignored. However the demands persisted. … Who I was [began] to mean little to nothing, because it would only be how I was portrayed on television that would matter. It was witnessing the slow death of the woman I became, that discouraged my will to fight. I felt like I was no longer living. I was existing for the purpose of a corporation’s gain and ratings, and that killed me. Mental illness is real. We have to normalize acknowledging it and stop associating it with shame and humiliation.”

Braxton continued, pointing out that “reality TV personalities have no union, no coat of protection, no formal representation that protects our labor, our rights, our voices. They promise us opportunity but produce exploitation, which has only developed a poor portrayal of black people in show business.”

After thanking her fans for their support, Braxton promised to “do everything in my power to aid those who [suffer] from mental illness, including those of us [whose] mental illness was only a result from the toxic, systematic bondage that dwells [in] television. It was only God’s grace and his mercy on my attempt to end my pain and my life that I am here to utilize my voice.”

A regular cast member of WE tv’s Braxton Family Values since 2011, Braxton also starred opposite then-husband Vince Herbert in the spinoff Tamar & Vince from 2012 to 2017. She served as a co-host of The Real from 2013 to 2016, during which she (along with her fellow co-hosts) was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Though she was forced to withdraw from Dancing With the Stars in 2015 due to an injury, Braxton returned to the world of reality competitions in 2019, winning the second season of Celebrity Big Brother. She has also filled in as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race (twice) and HBO Max’s Legendary.

On the scripted front, Braxton has guest-starred on episodes of The Soul Man, Being Mary Jane, In the Cut and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Braxton’s next reality TV venture, Tamar Braxton: Get Ya Life, was set to premiere July 30 on WE tv but has since been postponed. Watch the trailer below:

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for suicide bomb attacks on Libya’s foreign ministry in Tripoli, which have left at least three people dead and over half-a-dozen injured.

Three armed gunmen stormed the foreign ministry of Libya’s internationally recognized government in Tripoli on Tuesday morning, killing three employees and injuring at least ten others. Later in the day, the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack, through its propaganda outlet.

The assault on the diplomatic compound began at around 9:30am with the detonation of a car bomb in front of the building. Immediately afterwards the gunmen opened fire and two of them managed to get inside and blow themselves up. The third attacker was killed in the gunfire exchange with the ministry guards.

Libya has been in a state of chaos and turmoil since 2011, when a NATO bombing campaign helped militants overthrow and assassinate Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Ever since then the extremists have exploited the power vacuum, with sporadic clashes breaking out between various factions throughout the country and in the nation’s capital, Tripoli. Currently, Libya has two rival governments and a plan to hold a presidential election this year was postponed due to the continuing power struggle.

The US, which had supported armed extremists against Gaddafi’s government but has since appeared uninterested in the fractured state’s fate, condemned the attack, somewhat ironically, stressing that it supports Libya’s struggle against terrorism as the country continues to “work towards a prosperous, stable, and secure” future.

It all got a bit much for Labour MP Clive Lewis who decided to simulate shooting himself in the head during a House of Commons debate on the finance bill.

The MP for Norwich South, and shadow treasury minister, was filmed shaking his head and laughing while his colleague Anneliese Dodds was interrupted by a Tory MP.

Lewis then molds his fingers into the shape of a gun, inserts them into his mouth before pretending to shoot himself in the head. The MP even shakes his body, to account for recoil.

The joke received a mixed reaction on social media, with some attacking the MP for ‘disrespect’ and conducting ‘behavior ill-befitting of an MP.’

While others, including the founder of the ‘MenandBoysCoalition’, defended Lewis, stating he just has a childish sense of humor. 

The MP’s particular brand of jokes has landed him in trouble in the past. He apologized after he was filmed saying to a man: “Get on your knees, bitch,” at a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference.

The sisters, Rotana Farea (22) and Tala Farea (16) were discovered on October 24 on the banks of the river, having gone missing two months previously from Fairfax, Virginia, where they lived with their family. So far, the investigation has revealed that the sisters traveled from Washington DC to Philadelphia, before arriving New York City on September 1.

At a press conference on Friday, police said they had “no credible information” that any crime took place, but confirmed that their probe is ongoing. Investigators tracked the girls’ last movements using credit card records, which showed that they had “maxed out” a card staying in a number of “high end” hotels in New York, where they ordered meals for two people every day in the days leading to their deaths.

The sisters were found tied face-to-face with duct tape at the waist and feet, were fully clothed and their bodies showed no obvious signs of trauma, which likely rules out a theory that they could have jumped together from the George Washington Bridge.

Some kind of suicide is still a leading theory in the sisters’ deaths, however. Water found in their lungs made it “entirely credible” that they entered the water while still alive.

The baffling case took on an added air of mystery when it was revealed that the sisters’ mother told police that she had received a phone call from the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington DC the day before the sisters were found. During the call, a Saudi embassy official instructed her family to leave the US, due to the fact that her daughters had applied for political asylum, she claimed.

Police also revealed that a man who frequently exercises along the riverbank told them that he had seen the girls sitting about 30 feet apart in a playground with their heads in their hands and making “praying” noises on the same day that they were later found dead – an image that the witness said has been “haunting” him since.

Tala and Rotana moved to the US with their mother in 2015. Rotana had been enrolled at George Mason University but left in the spring.

The two had previously been placed in a shelter after another disappearance in 2017, reportedly asking police not to reveal their location. On Friday, police confirmed that reports of physical abuse within the family had been made at that time, but did not elaborate.

Sources in Virginia who were not family members told the police that the sisters had said they would rather harm themselves or commit suicide than return to Saudi Arabia.

According to some media reports, 16-year-old Tala had reportedly been offered a place at a top school in Saudi Arabia but desperately did not want to go.

The Saudi consulate in New York said it had “appointed an attorney to follow the case closely,” while the Saudi embassy in Washington contacted the family and “extended its support and aid in this trying time.”

Today, news is abound that Kaley Cuoco will voice the iconic character in a new DC TV series, but what of the big screen?

Robbie played Harley in Suicide Squad and, despite the film receiving generally poor reviews, she went down well with fans and critics alike.

Birds of Prey is currently in the works at DC – and while it’s not a Harley Quinn solo movie, it will see her assembling her own all-female team

The release date has been set, and it’s February 7, 2020.

That date may be a long way off yet, but we already know it’ll be landing in cinemas just one week before the next James Bond caper, which was recently pushed back to February 14 the same year.

The cast is being assembled at present, with Jurnee Smollett-Bell cast as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress.

Rosie Perez is also thought to have signed up to play Renee Montoya, a gay Gotham City police detective who becomes known as a hero named The Question.

Earlier this year, Robbie told Collider: “I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’

“Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang.

“I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”

She added: ““And then of course having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff.

“They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing?’

“So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy [Yan] was the best director.”

Suicide Squad’s sequel continues to be “delayed”, and it’s unclear if or when it will get officially put into motion.

Other DC projects in the pipeline include Aquaman, due this December; and Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984, both out in 2019.

Birds of Prey is out on February 7, 2020.
