Type 2 diabetes is a common condition which causes the level of sugar in the blood to become too high.

It’s dangerous because if not controlled properly it can lead to serious problems with the eyes, heart and nerves.

If you have diabetes, you may have to make changes to your diet to keep the condition under control, such as ensuring you don’t eat too much sugar and fat.

So, is it safe to drink alcohol? According to Diabetes UK, sufferers of the condition can still drink, but there are certain things you should be aware of.

“For some people, having a few drinks at home or in the pub is part of everyday life. And having diabetes shouldn’t get in the way of this,” said Diabetes UK.

“But when you have diabetes, it’s a bit more complicated.”

Firstly, drinking alcohol makes the blood sugar level drop, which can lead to hypoglycaemia in diabetic people who take medication to keep their blood sugar level low.

Hypoglycaemia, or a hypo, is when the level of sugar in the blood is too low.

If you drink a lot or on an empty stomach, you’re even more likely to have a hypo.

“Your liver works twice as hard when you drink, because it’s trying to keep your blood sugar steady and at the same time trying to get rid of the alcohol. It just can’t keep up,” said Diabetes UK.

“So your blood sugar might drop and stay low until your liver has dealt with the alcohol. That’s why you might crave carbs and wake up the next morning with a headache.”

The charity also warns on mistaking having a hypo with being drunk, so you should always carry hypo treatments with you, wear medical ID and ensure whoever you’re with knows you have diabetes.

Secondly, alcohol can have a lot of calories in it, leading to weight gain. Being overweight is another risk factor for people with diabetes.

If you are going to drink, there are certain alcoholic beverages you should try to avoid, such as low-sugar beer and cider.

Low-sugar beer and cider are sometimes called ‘diabetic drinks’. However, while they may contain less sugar, they also contain more alcohol.

On the other hand, low-alcohol wine should also be avoided, as it often contains more sugar than normal.

The same goes for drinks with lots of sugar, such as sweet sherry, sweet wine and liqueur.

If you drink spirits, you should ensure you have it with diet or sugar-free mixers.

Some drinks like beer, ale and cider contain carbohydrates and will increase blood sugar levels.

Spirits, dry wine and Prosecco, therefore, may be a better bet.

The morning after the night before, ensuring you eat breakfast will help to manage blood sugar, while drinking lots of water to keep hydrated will also help.

“If you’ve got a blood sugar meter at home, check your levels regularly the next day. The symptoms of having a hypo are similar to feelings of a hangover, so you need to know if you’re having one,” warned Diabetes UK.

The UK government advises drinking no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, which equates to six medium glasses of wine or six pints of lager.

BRITAIN is in the grip of hay fever hell thanks to the heatwave. Victims include people who have never suffered with an allergy to pollen before. The Met Office says the pollen count has been stuck at very high for at least a week, with no relief in sight.

Britons that NEVER had hay fever are falling victim due to the heatwave

And one forecast says it could last until the middle of next month.

Inquiries about hay fever – or allergic rhinitis – to the NHS website are up by 43 per cent this June compared with the same period last year.

Allergy UK said it has seen a big spike in email inquiries or calls to its helpline because the hot spell has coincided with the peak of the grass pollen season.

Grass pollen affects about 80 per cent of the UK’s 12 million hay fever sufferers.

Allergy UK Nurse Adviser Holly Shaw said: “This year we are getting more reports of people suffering from hay fever for the first time in years, or even for the first time ever.

“While it is more common for hay fever to develop in childhood, it is not uncommon for people to develop it as adults.”

The Met Office, which works with the University of Worcester’s National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit to predict pollen counts, said only northern Scotland was escaping the highest levels.

The current forecast says: “The grass pollen risk will be very high during warm, dry weather. Spore and weed levels will be elevated too.”

A Met Office spokesman said: “We are at the peak of the grass season and pollen levels are particularly high because we have not had any rain. Rain washes pollen out of the air column.

“But when you have high pressure, as we do at the moment, the pollen builds up in the lower layers of the atmosphere so there’s a cumulative effect.

“We have had warm, dry weather for a good number of weeks. If we had one or two big fronts of rain pushing across the UK it would make a dramatic difference.

“But apart from a few possible showers in the South on Sunday, we do not expect significant rain before the middle of next week so there is no significant relief in sight.”

The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit forecast for this week says: “Very high grass pollen will continue this week during warm, sunny weather across the country.

“The season is expected to last into the first week of July in southern and central regions and into mid or late July in the far North of England and Scotland.”

At the same time there are also high levels of fungal spores and weed pollen, particularly nettle pollen, which can all cause hay fever.

The only good news is that tree pollen is now only at moderate levels, mainly because its peak was in late winter and spring.

Hay fever can feel like flu, causing sneezing and coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears, loss of smell, headaches and earaches, and make sufferers feel very tired.

The NHS said that hay fever can also make asthma sufferers short of breath, wheeze and cough and give them a tight feeling in their chest.

Its website says: “There’s currently no cure for hay fever and you can’t prevent it.

“But you can do things to ease your symptoms when the pollen count is high.”

Tips include putting Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen, wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes, vacuuming regularly and dusting with a damp cloth.

The NHS also recommends seeing a pharmacist, who can provide antihistamine drops, tablets and nasal sprays.

Analysis by Holly Shaw

Hay fever is particularly bad at the moment thanks to the long period of hot, dry weather coinciding with the peak of the grass pollen season.

Allergic rhinitis affects one in five people – 12 million in the UK – and grass pollen affects about 80 per cent of them.

Hay fever cases have trebled in the past 20 years and this year there has been a spike in calls to our helpline.

For most people hay fever means uncomfortable symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and watery, itchy eyes, and it can significantly affect quality of life and school performance.

But the greatest concern is for people with both hay fever and asthma.

If hay fever symptoms are not well managed, they can cause significant breathing problems and exacerbate asthma.

Hay fever is caused when the body makes antibodies in response to substances, such as pollen particles, that are breathed in.

In people sensitive to these allergens, this causes the release of chemicals from cells in nasal passages, the eyes or airways.

If you think you have hay fever, the important thing is to visit a GP or a pharmacist and confirm that your symptoms are hay fever rather than, say, a cold.

Then you can get appropriate medicine.

If you have been outside, it is worth getting changed and having a shower because pollen is very sticky and can be on your hair and clothes.

You can also transfer it to your pillows.

Bear in mind that during the day pollen rises in the atmosphere but drops down overnight in a “pollen shower” – so the high spots are in the evening, overnight and first thing.

So it is better to shut your windows at night to keep out the pollen.

Call our helpline on 01322 619 898 during office hours, or email info@allergyuk.org.

Diabetes sufferers more likely to get Parkinson’s https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-sufferers-more-likely-to-get-parkinsons/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-sufferers-more-likely-to-get-parkinsons/#respond Thu, 14 Jun 2018 04:22:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-sufferers-more-likely-to-get-parkinsons/

Now it is hoped further research could help improve treatments for both conditions, although experts are currently at a loss to explain the relationship between them.

Tom Warner, Professor of Clinical Neurology at University College London, who authored the study, said yesterday: “We can now say more definitely that there is a link between diabetes and Parkinson’s, but we need to do more research to understand the relationship, whether it’s due to genetics, the effect of on the brain, or both.”

Parkinson’s is a long-term degenerative brain disease characterised by involuntary shaking, while in Type 2 the body resists insulin, necessary for converting glucose into energy.

As brain cells are particularly reliant on glucose for energy, it has long been speculated the two diseases could be linked.

The study by UCL, the University of Oxford and Queen Mary University of London followed more than two million people diagnosed with Type 2 between 1999 and 2011. None had a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

They were studied alongside a comparison group of more than six million people without Type 2.

Among the people with diabetes 14,252 had a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease during a later hospital admission, compared with 20,878 in the comparison group.

Experts found Type 2 sufferers were 32 per cent more likely to have a subsequent diagnosis of Parkinson’s.

The link was strongest among those aged between 25 and 44 and people with more complications from diabetes. Experts say the link could be due to a shared genetic predisposition to both conditions.

Type 2 now affects one in 10 British adults.

The findings could now help advance treatment for Parkinson’s.

Dr Beckie Port, of Parkinson’s UK, said: “Understanding the link between these two could be key to developing treatments that slow the course of Parkinson’s, something that no current treatments can do.”

Kathryn Kirchner, of Diabetes UK, said the study “does not show that Type 2 causes Parkinson’s. We would need further research to confirm whether these conditions are related and then work out the genetic or biological processes that could be behind the link.”

The research is published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Now, to help monitor their salt intake, researchers have developed a flexible and stretchable wireless sensing system designed to be comfortably worn in the mouth.

Based on an ultrathin membrane, the sensor incorprates a miniaturised flexible electronic system that uses Bluetooth technology to wirelessly report salt consumption to a smartphone or tablet.

The researchers plan to further miniaturise the system – which now resembles a dental plate – to the size of a tooth.

Assistant Professor Woon-Hong Yeo, of the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States, said: “We can unobtrusively and wirelessly measure the amount of sodium that people are taking in over time.

“By monitoring sodium in real-time, the device could one day help people who need to restrict sodium intake learn to change their eating habits and diet.”

The device has been tested in three adult study participants who wore the sensor system for up to a week while eating both solid and liquid foods including vegetable juice, chicken soup and crips.

A recent survey of 1,000 adults found that a third couldn’t estimate how much salt they ate.

The research team, whose findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, say their salt sensing system could help users better track how much salt they consume.

Dr Yeo said. “Our device could have applications for many different goals involving eating behaviour for diet management or therapeutics.

“The entire sensing and electronics package was conformally integrated onto a soft material that users can tolerate.

“The sensor is comfortable to wear, and data from it can be transmitted to a smartphone or tablet.

“Eventually the information could go a doctor or other medical professional for remote monitoring.”

The device can monitor salt intake in real-time, and record daily amounts.

Using an app, Dr Yeo said the system could advise users planning meals how much of their daily salt allocation they had already consumed.

The device can communicate with a smartphone up to 10 metres away.

The researchers said that the next step for the salt sensor are to further miniaturise the device, and test it with users who have hypertension, obesity or diabetes.

But a new report from the British Chiropractic Association shows that our chances of curing or even just reducing the pain, depend upon where we live in the UK.

The research found significant differences in the number of people experiencing long term back or neck pain across Britain, with rates between regions varying by more than 17per cent.

People in Northern Ireland are suffering the most, with 57per cent saying they currently have back or neck pain. Those in the South East appear to have the best back or neck health, with only 40 per cent of people complaining of pain.

These figures are in comparison to the national average of 44per cent, representing a 12per cent rise in back and neck pain nationally since 2017.

Taking simple steps can be really effective in reducing your experience of back pain.

Catherine Quinn

Those in the Midlands are developing back or neck pain the earliest – with a huge 70 per cent of residents experiencing back or neck pain by the age of 30, compared to just under half (48per cent) of people in the East of England.

Londoners were the most likely to take proactive steps to prevent back or neck pain before it occurs, closely followed by those in the South West.

Catherine Quinn, president of the British Chiropractic Association, said: “This study suggests the occurrence of back and neck pain has increased over the past year, and it appears we should all be following the lead of the South East where they seem to be managing this best.

“Taking simple steps can be really effective in reducing your experience of back pain.

“It’s interesting to note that certain regions are seeing back and neck pain among a much younger age group.

“Back and neck pain can of course develop at any age and is usually not serious, however this could be a sign that modern and increasingly sedentary lifestyles are impacting on the younger populations back health.”

She added: “Whatever your age, my top piece of advice for those experiencing back or neck pain would be to get out and about and ensure you are incorporating physical activity into your daily routines.

“There are also a number simple exercises and small changes you can use on a daily basis to prevent pain, for example, putting both hands on the back of your head, pushing your elbows back and then shrugging your shoulders whilst sitting or standing are easy ways to stay active – these may sound basic but I know from my patients that they really work!”

The new study also highlighted that:

• Scots are suffering most frequently with a third experiencing back or neck pain on a daily basis, compared to just 17per cent in London

• Lifting and carrying was reported as the top back or neck pain trigger for all regions, followed by sitting still for long periods

• The majority of regions said that back or neck pain was most likely to prevent them sleeping, followed by exercising.

In the UK, some two and half million people suffer agonising pain every single day. It is the most common cause of job-related disability, and affects men and women equally.

Most back pain is short-term, but about one in five people affected by acute low back pain go on to develop chronic low back pain lasting a year or more.

A compressed and herniated disk, in which the rubbery cushion between vertebrae impinges on and irritates nearby nerves, is a major cause of low back pain that can radiate to the legs.

And experts say the condition has become an epidemic in the UK with back, neck and muscle problems causing millions of days of work to be lost each year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

New figures, released by the UK Statistics Authority, showed that workers aged 50-64 lost around 4.2 million working days due to back pain in 2014.

Those aged 25-34 were absent for 1.89 million days, while those in the 35-49 bracket missed 3.86 million days. The total cost to the economy of the number of back-related sick days is now more than £1billion..

Traditionally, sufferers who go to their GP with back pain are treated through a combination of physiotherapy and painkillers such as paracetamol.

Surgery is an option in extreme cases. The extremely debilitating condition is, along with osteoarthritis, the leading cause of disability throughout the world.

Current NHS advice to sufferers varies, depending on the severity of cases.

The BCA recommends that, if you are experiencing pain for more than a few days then you seek professional help, as an undiagnosed problem could lead to longer-term problems if left untreated
