STATINS provide a buffer against heart disease by stymieing the production of cholesterol inside the liver. Most people need to stay on statins for life. According to Doctor Paula Oliveira of Loxa Beauty, “suddenly” stopping statins can have grave health consequences.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesday’s game-changing Greenleaf. If you keep reading, you’d better pray for the wisdom not to come at us for telling you what happens.

At the start of Tuesday’s Greenleaf, Lady Mae was about as likely to hand over her family’s lavish estate to Tara as I am to give someone, anyone, a sip of my wine. In other words, not very damn. But no sooner had the Greenleafs’ matriarch had a change of heart than she and Bishop made a disturbing discovery that changed… well, everything. Read on, and I’ll explain.

‘EVERY DAY IS A GIFT… EVEN A DAY LIKE TODAY’ | As “The Fifth Day” began, Grace did her best to rouse for the service downstairs Sophia, who’d been up all night dealing with texts from “stupid girls at Hampton” that had seen her topless pic online. Though Lady Mae preached that she hoped her nearest and dearest, perhaps especially Jacob and Kerissa, could see each other in a new light after worshipping together at home, there was probably a better chance of them sprouting angels’ wings and flying into the ceiling fan. Later, Noah recalled that on the clan’s first Sunday in the soon-to-be-demolished church, Grace had lost her virginity to him. Oh, come on, tacky! What? he insisted. That was “as much a part of that church as anything else.” Finally, Lady Mae took off to see Tara. And no, she didn’t want Bishop tagging along. Two Greenleaf men had already gone to see the poor man’s Florence Nightingale and had only made the problem bigger. “With the help of God,” Lady Mae hoped, “one Greenleaf woman can solve it.”

As the Greenleafs chowed down on enough brunch to feed 12 apostles for, like, 12 years, AJ observed Jacob and Kerissa fighting and remarked to his grandfather that there were some people who liked to break things apart. “They just… wanna see how it works,” he theorized, “’cause they don’t know.” In response, Bishop ushered AJ into a nearby garage, where he revealed a box full of parts to build a ’64 Pontiac GTO. Bishop had always wanted one, you see. And his father had gotten him one — but with assembly required. Total. Assembly. Required. Neither AJ nor Bishop knew how to build a vehicle of any sort, “but,” Bishop said, “if you help me put this together, the car is yours.” Sweet way to keep him coming back for some quality time, James. Well done.

‘WOW, GUESS I CAN READ A ROOM’ | When Lady Mae visited Tara, she challenged the younger woman’s modest ambitions. “Jesus, He never built a temple,” Tara noted. “He never asked for donations.” Ha — and yet “now you want my house,” Lady Mae noted. But that ridiculously fancy pile of bricks could be turned into a shelter; it could help so many people. Touché. “This morning, I asked God for a new beginning,” Lady Mae replied. “Well, God has… quite a sense of humor.” Off this eye-opening exchange, she returned home and told her husband that Jesus had instructed her to give Tara the house. Nearby, after Grace took a nap on Noah, he recalled that when he had lived in the cabin, he’d found Mrs. Davis’ caretaker’s journal, complete with its references to “the Negro” who’d come by. “What if ‘that Negro’ was Darryl James?” What if?

When Jacob and Kerissa broke it to Zora that they were divorcing, she covered her upset with sarcasm. “I wish you would’ve done it a long time ago — for Mom’s sake,” the teen said. “Who’s she gonna get now?” Some geezer? After Kerissa clarified that the split wasn’t all Jacob’s fault — “We both missed the mark” — she gave a reunion one last (very last) shot. “I am willing to still drop this whole thing,” she told her soon-to-be ex, “but after we tell Winkie tomorrow, its over. There’s no going back.” Yeah, you can’t pile a divorcing/not-divorcing scenario on a moppet whose name is already Winkie; he’s got enough to deal with. Meanwhile, AJ accused Sophia of having “no balls” for not wanting to return to Hampton. She couldn’t stay home with Zora and him forever. Even if she did for now, “you’d still have to grow up, you’d still have to leave” eventually. Wait, when the heck did AJ become the voice of reason?!?

Greenleaf Recap Season 5 Episode 5 Rochelle Returns‘IN THE SAME WAY THAT THAT AWFUL FRIDAY CAN BE CALLED GOOD, THIS VISIT HAS BEEN A BALM FOR MY SOUL’ | After Bishop reported to Grace that Lady Mae wanted to give Tara the house, his daughter replied, “How much do you need” to pay her off? “How much you got?” was his answer. Nearby, Charity phoned Phil’s father but didn’t seem to get a whole lot further than her sister had, even though, as the old guy noted, he gave her more than her allotted two minutes. Off the intel that she’d gotten from Noah, Grace made a beeline for the cabin, briefly consoled Zora, then transitioned to, “Yeah, your parents are all kindsa screwed up, can I see that journal already?” And with no trouble at all, she found it. Back at the main house, Lady Mae lit into Bishop for asking Grace for a handout. She wanted their new church — and life — to be “founded on truth and built sturdy like every simple, well-made thing.”

That being the case, Lady Mae was adamant. “We’re giving Tara the house,” she insisted. Bishop argued that she was “making me look like a murderer” by doing so. But she was about as swayable as a boulder in a river. Thankfully, Charity interrupted to invite them to join the family in coming to Calvary one last time. “We’re not going to say goodbye,” she clarified, “we’re going to say thank-you.” Once there, Bishop declared, “Let us seal up this tomb… and wait for our miracle.” He could handle being called a murderer after all. Jesus, he noted, “even let himself be called a criminal.” But when he and Lady Mae went to tell Tara that the mansion was hers, they were greeted by not only the would-be saint but… uh-huh — their worst nightmare, Tara and Basie’s half sister, Rochelle. So, what did you think of “The Fifth Day” — and Rochelle’s return? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere Recap: Suddenly Last Summer — Plus, [Spoiler] Is Attacked! https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-3-premiere-recap-suddenly-last-summer-plus-spoiler-is-attacked/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-3-premiere-recap-suddenly-last-summer-plus-spoiler-is-attacked/#respond Thu, 04 Jul 2019 12:00:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-3-premiere-recap-suddenly-last-summer-plus-spoiler-is-attacked/ Warning: Only a mouth breather wouldn’t assume that the following recap would contain spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Stranger Things. But just in case, you’ve been warned.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same” seemed to be the underlying theme of Stranger Things’ Season 3 premiere. For, although a whole lot about Hawkins was different in the summer of ’85 — the Starcourt Mall was devouring local businesses, Mike and El were joined at the lips, and Dustin had a girlfriend (or so he claimed!) — a whole lot was, for better or worse, familiar. Joyce was still turning a blind eye to Hopper’s ginormous crush, Billy’s rockin’ bod was still getting women to overlook his mullet, and, oh yeah, the Mind Flayer was still sending chills down Will’s spine — and ours right along with it. Read on, and we’ll go over all the deets…

stranger-things-recap-season-3-episode-1-suzie-do-you-copy‘OH EL, I WISH WE COULD MAKE OUT FOREVER AND NEVER HANG OUT WITH ANY OF OUR FRIENDS’ | As “Suzie, Do You Copy?” began, the Russian military tried, and spectacularly failed, to open the gate to the Upside Down that El closed in the Season 2 finale. In response, a Dolph Lundgren type throttled the life out of the scientist in charge of the operation as a general whose name I could only assume was Vladimir Crankypants told the soon-to-be-dead man’s second in command that he had a year to succeed where his predecessor had failed. Next, we cut to — how convenient! — one year later, at which point we were quickly caught up on the lives of all of our main characters. Among the most significant developments, Hopper seemed to live in a state of near-constant apoplexy over the fact that El and Mike only ever stopped kissing long enough for him to sing Corey Hart’s “Never Surrender” at the top of his lungs; Nancy and Jonathan had gotten hired at the Hawkins Post as, respectively, a “coffee-delivery machine” and photographer; Steve, his come-hither hairdo hidden under a Scoops Ahoy hat at the mall, appeared to have lost his mojo; and lifeguard Billy’s abs had turned the community pool into a summer hot spot, especially for Mrs. Robinson Wheeler.

During a break from his never-ending make-out sessions with El, Mike rushed to the mall so that Steve could sneak him, Will, Lucas and Max (still going strong, by the way) into Day of the Dead through the ice-cream shop’s rear entrance. “Hey dingus, your children are here,” announced Steve’s co-worker Robin (Maya Hawke), an insta-fave. Alas, the classic zombie flick had scarcely started when the projector fritzed out. Wait, it wasn’t just the projector, it was lights out at the whole mall… No, wait. It was actually all of Hawkins that blacked out! Odder still, in the bowels of the abandoned steelworks on the outskirts of town, rats were sent scurrying as particles took the shape of… well, it was hard to tell, actually (though in Hawkins, you could assume it wasn’t going to be the shape of, say, a puppy). When the ominous figure had mostly materialized, power was restored all over Hawkins, and Will felt a chill run down his spine — the kind of chill that caused him to flash back to his possession by the Mind Flayer.

stranger-things-recap-season-3-episode-1-suzie-do-you-copy‘THIS IS GOLD LEADER RETURNING TO BASE… ‘ | The following day, Dustin was chagrined not to get a response from his pals over his walkie-talkie upon returning to Hawkins after a month at Camp Know Where (aka summer science camp). “At least someone’s happy I’m home,” he told his turtle, who, to be honest, didn’t seem very excited. Just then, all of the toys in Dustin’s room became mysteriously animated. Arming himself with a canister of Farrah hairspray, he tried to tell himself that he was just dreaming, but in fact, he was wide awake — it was his friends using El’s powers to welcome him home with a practical joke (that left poor Lucas with a painful eyeful of Farrah). After Dustin showed his buddies some of the cool stuff he’d invented while away, he pulled out his masterpiece: Cerebro, “the Cadillac of ham radios.” Thanks to it, he could talk to his new girlfriend in Utah anytime he wanted. Wait, girlfriend?!? Yep, Dustin insisted. He’d met her at Camp Know Where, and was she pretty? “Think Phoebe Cates, only hotter.”

Meanwhile, Hopper paid a visit to the general store to vent to Joyce about El and Mike. They spend too much time together! They’re always kissing! “I need for them to break up!” he raged, sounding adorably like every dad ever. Acting as the voice of reason, Joyce suggested that Hopper try a kinder, gentler, smarter approach. “If you order them around like a cop, then they’re gonna rebel,” she warned. “It’s just what they do.” Instead, he should sit them down for a heart-to-heart. “A heart-to-heart?” he replied. “What is that?” Later, he was sorry he asked. He’d have preferred to just kill Mike and cover it up. For a moment, Hopper and Joyce’s hands touched… but she pulled away the second he asked if she wanted to have dinner. “I have plans,” she lied. (She was just going to reheat leftovers, watch Cheers and have bittersweet Bob flashbacks.) Down the block at the Post, Nancy took a chance and suggested a story on the Starcourt Mall and its impact on local businesses. Unfortunately, sexist reporter Bruce (Jake Busey) reassigned “Nancy Drew” to The Case of the Missing Mustard on his lunch. Charming.

‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH NANA?!?’ | Leading his friends to the top of a hill to assemble Cerebro and say hi to Suzie, Dustin explained that his girlfriend’s family was Mormon, which wasn’t the same as Amish, though it did mean that they were “super religious white people” who’d disapprove of their romance. “It’s all a bit Shakespearian,” he said. Soon, Mike and El realized that they’d gone 15 minutes without smooching and, Dustin’s feelings be damned, bailed to, um, make curfew even though it was four o’clock! As they left, Will got another tingle down his spine when rats scuttled across the field behind him on their way to the steelworks. Once the rodents arrived at their destination, yikes! They began… exploding. At the community pool, Billy and Mrs. Wheeler took turns admiring one another’s form, then finally, he told her that he sometimes gave advanced lessons in (cough) swimming to adults. If she wanted one, he added, there’s a pool at the Motel 6. When she began to demur, he assured her, “It… will be… the workout of your life.”

That evening, Dustin still hadn’t been able to raise Suzie on Cerebro. But after his friends left the hill assuming that she wasn’t real, he did manage to hear something: the Russians speaking in both their native tongue and code! (And, from the glimpse that we got of their lab, it appeared that the junior scientist had made significant progress in his task — perhaps related to the fact that Joyce’s fridge magnets no longer worked?) At the Post, Nancy took a message from a Mrs. Driscoll about diseased rats. At Hopper and El’s place, the chief meant to, really meant to have a heart-to-heart with the youngsters, but they were so snarky and disrespectful — in other words, kids — that he gave up and told Mike his mom needed him home. “It’s your grandma,” he said gravely. Of course, once he had Mike in his truck, Hopper locked the doors and played psycho, threatening the boy to put some distance between himself and El if he wanted to have any hope of being allowed to continue dating her. And, as the premiere drew to a close, Mrs. Wheeler was headed out for her rendezvous with Billy when she happened upon her husband and baby Holly asleep in a chair in the living room. While we didn’t know whether she’d show up for her “lesson,” we knew that Billy wouldn’t: After he crashed into something that left slime all over his windshield, he was knocked off his feet by something unseen and dragged into the bowels of the steelworks!

So, what did you think of “Suzie, Do You Copy?” Grade it in the poll below, then hit the comments.

Woman in vegetative state suddenly gives birth, sparking sex abuse investigation https://briefnews.eu/woman-in-vegetative-state-suddenly-gives-birth-sparking-sex-abuse-investigation/ https://briefnews.eu/woman-in-vegetative-state-suddenly-gives-birth-sparking-sex-abuse-investigation/#respond Sat, 05 Jan 2019 02:32:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/woman-in-vegetative-state-suddenly-gives-birth-sparking-sex-abuse-investigation/ The unexpected birth of a baby boy to a woman who has spent the last 14 years in a vegetative state has sparked a sex abuse investigation at a Phoenix nursing facility.

Staff at Hacienda HealthCare were reportedly unaware the woman was even pregnant “until she was pretty much giving birth,” a source familiar with the situation told KPHO. “From what I’ve been told she was moaning. And they didn’t know what was wrong with her.”

The baby, a healthy boy, was delivered on December 29.

The mother has “lived” at Hacienda ever since a near-drowning incident left her brain-damaged over 14 years ago. She requires 24-hour care, meaning many of the facility’s staff would have had access to her room, and is incapable of communication or voluntary movement.

Since the birth, Hacienda has adopted a policy requiring female employees to accompany male employees to female patients’ rooms, most likely mandated by the Arizona Department of Health Services, which said in a statement that it has implemented “heightened safety measures” that include “increased staff presence during patient interactions” as well as increased surveillance of patient care locations.

A Hacienda spokesperson said the facility was cooperating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies on the “unprecedented matter,” as well as reviewing its own “processes, protocols, and people.”

Hacienda nearly lost its Medicare funding in December 2013 after ADHS found at least one staff member was abusive to multiple patients while several staff members were deficient in reporting patient allegations of abuse by staff. One staff member had been fired for making repeated inappropriate sexual comments to patients. Hacienda was given a year to correct the “defects” in staff training and staff treatment of patients or be dropped from the Medicare roster, and they reported they had done so less than a month later.

Hacienda has a one-star rating – “much below average” – on Medicare.gov, the official database of programs affiliated with the government-funded healthcare program.

  • China runs the largest merchandise trade surplus with the US at $ 375 billion.
  • But some analysts think the data can be misleading.
  • The US-China trade deficit could be overstated by as much as 20%, one analyst said.

China is the world’s largest trader and is part of almost every supply and value chain. But a team of Macquarie Research analysts led by Viktor Shvets argue in a recent research note that China’s trade importance is “overstated” and “distorted.”

Shvets says the trade balance used to be more relevant. But now, in an era of multinationals and fragmentation of global supply value chains, it can be misleading.

Steve McQueen’s Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback vanished 38 years ago. The ominous-looking pony car with the barking 390-cubic-inch V-8, which starred in one of the greatest chase scenes in movie history in the film Bullitt—with McQueen doing the driving in many of the shots—may have been lost, but it was never forgotten. Certainly not by Mustang aficionados, who speculated on its whereabouts for almost four decades, titillated by the occasional internet post or word of a spectral sighting. So when the Bullitt Mustang suddenly appeared at a Ford press preview at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 14, 2018, the assembled journalists, car nuts, Ford execs, and Mustang fans went full geek.
