Clooney is back in the director’s chair with a Coen Brothers script and Damon to boot. The film’s synopsis reads: “Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic, suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns – the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. “But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit and violence.” While Suburbicon has Hollywood heavyweights involved the film has ultimately failed to impress the critics, garnering just 29% positive reviews. Here’s some reactions. Daily Telegraph The Times Hollywood Reporter Entertainment Weekly TIME Wall Street Journal Time Out New York Post The Wrap Nevertheless, not all the critics disliked the movie, with The Independent awarding it five stars. The Independent Daily Mail Variety Suburbicon will be released in UK cinemas on November 24, 2017.
It’s a hectic, sour and muddled film – a flailing counterfeit of satire that keeps slipping on its own banana skin supply, and never remotely gets to grips with what it thinks it’s sending up.
George Clooney directs Matt Damon from a Coen Brothers script. Brilliant, right? How could they go wrong? Well, if nobody involved in the creation of Suburbicon went terribly, egregiously, wrong, they didn’t quite go right either.
It pushes too hard from the start, then steadily goes off the rails from dark to dyspeptic, lacking the originality, bite or tonal consistency to make up for dipping from a very familiar James M. Cain well.
The movie does get some fun gory mileage out of its cracked-Pleasantville premise; but mostly it feels like broad farce madly in search of a cohesive centre, and a soul.
The filmmakers never let us forget how hip they are to humanity’s dark side, and their hyperawareness is more wearying than it is illuminating.
Suburbicon is not only unfunny, a bad sign for a black comedy, but deep-dyed dislikable.
Suburbicon is so inoffensive in its competently mounted quirk that you won’t mourn the film that might have been.
Suburbicon is a surprisingly tone-deaf combination of two wildly different stories that simply don’t work in concert.
A garish and overblown crime melodrama that combines clumsy noir with lame jabs at 1950s suburban conformity and racism, two subjects whose satirical sell-by date are now decades past.
Co-scripted by the Coen brothers, [Suburbicon] is both wildly entertaining in its own macabre, violent fashion, and also very perceptive about racism and hypocrisy in middle-class white America.
It’s immensely stylish, darkly funny, and has dialogue partly written by the Coen brothers, which never hurts.
A lightly sneaky and entertaining movie.![]()
It’s not often that one film attempts so many different things and manages to make none of them work, but gosh darn it, Suburbicon somehow makes such blundering seem easy. Director George Clooney packs a whole lot of ideas into his tale of the underbelly of 1950s suburbia, but they’re really bad, lazy ideas, which is a shame because Suburbicon has quite the pedigree.
The biggest problem with Suburbicon is that it’s really two different movies cobbled together. One movie is a dark, farcical Coen Brothers-style crime movie. Which makes sense, since the Coens have a writing credit on the film. But then there’s the other movie, one that deals with racism and white supremacy. This is an element of the film that absolutely none of the advertising even hints at, which is kind of strange.
You really shouldn’t hold a movie’s advertising against it, but the trailers for Suburbicon make it look like a wacky dark comedy about a family man in the 50s fighting back against his tormentors. That’s not even close to what this movie is about, and the fact that the trailers tried to sell it as that hints at a movie that folks don’t know how to sell.
Find out more in our full Suburbicon review below.
Suburbicon is the perfect 1950s community, with nice, friendly faces — all of them white. Then a black family moves in, and the neighborhood loses its mind, completely unprepared for how to handle such a shake-up. It’s not that they’re against desegregation, the residents say. They just aren’t ready for it now.
Around the same time the African-American family moves into the neighborhood, a pair of men break into the home of Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) and take his family hostage. His son Nicky (Noah Jupe) watches in horror as the men drug and kill his mother (Julianne Moore). In the aftermath, Nicky’s aunt Margaret (also played by Moore) moves into the house, dyes her hair the same color of her dead sister, and grows awfully close to Gardner.
As for Gardner, he’s acting mighty suspicious, and not at all like a man grieving the death of his wife. Nicky’s kindly Uncle Mitch (Gary Basaraba) wants to help out, but Gardner keeps the boy isolated and Mitch at bay.
So where does the black family fit into this narrative, you might be wondering. It doesn’t. In fact, the family in question barely even qualify as characters. Suburbicon instead uses them as props; they’re mostly silent individuals who fight to hold their heads up high while their neighbors try to run them out of town. It’s never even clear that Gardner knows these new neighbors exist, even though Nicky strikes up a friendship with the young boy of the family. How does this family’s plight relate to anything going on with Gardner? It doesn’t. Because this is a bad movie.
The script, also co-written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, wants to say something about white hypocrisy — the neighbors are shouting about how their neighborhood was a nice, decent place until “the negroes” moved in, all the while seemingly upstanding white citizen Gardner is up to no good.
Damon, as Gardner, is stuck with a character with no clear motives. Gardner’s mood and characterizations seemingly change from scene to scene — he goes from sort-of nice to downright evil at the blink of an eye. The same goes for Moore, who plays Margaret as either aloof or scheming depending on what the scene calls for. The only actor in the film who manages to make the material work is Oscar Isaac, who shows up late as an insurance investigator. Isaac finds the right balance between charm and smarm, and he breathes much needed life into a mostly lifeless film.
Suburbicon looks like it should be wonderful. The cast is comprised of good to great actors, Clooney has made excellent films in the past, the costume design is impeccable and the cinematography by Robert Elswit is both inviting and foreboding. Yet nothing here is clicking. There’s a bizarre lack of energy to nearly every single scene; the editing, by Stephen Mirrione, is far too loose, letting scenes linger far too long. The worst production element of all is the ridiculously overblown score from Alexandre Desplat, which booms and blasts incessantly. It’s absolutely dreadful.
Dreadful is the adjective that best sums up Suburbicon. One lesson to take away from the film is that no one except the Coen brothers should direct Coen brothers scripts. The only exception to this rule is Bridge of Spies, and that film had Steven Spielberg as a director. Clooney is no Spielberg, and while he’s been great acting in Coen brothers films, he has no idea how to direct their material.
One good movie could’ve been made from either of Suburbicon’s two threads — either a biting examination of racism in the 50s and how it’s not very different from today, or a darkly comedic murder mystery. Mashing these two very different ideas together makes absolutely no sense, and by the time Suburbicon closes on the most heavy-handed imagery imaginable, you’ll be wishing all these talented people had used their talents for something better.

This fall brings a reteaming of filmmaking duo Joel & Ethan Coen and superstar George Clooney, but not in the capacity that we’re used to see them collaborate. Instead, Suburbicon sees the Coen brothers only writing the script, and George Clooney is directing without starring in the movie himself, which is something he’s never done before. Now a new Suburbicon trailer has arrived online featuring some praise following the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival this past week.
This trailer is clearly playing up the quirky side of Suburbicon‘s story, but it sounds like the marketing may not be giving away exactly what the movie has in store for us. The Film Stage caught the film at TIFF, and based on their review, all those expecting a bit of a dark, screwball comedy due to a script from Joel & Ethan Coen may want to adjust their expectations. They write:
“In a turn of events worth noting, the film’s publicity (surely amongst the year’s most misleading) hinted that Suburbicon would be something derivative of those brothers’ more slapstick-leaning ensemble outings (Burn After Reading, Hail, Caesar!, etc.) but — much to the director’s credit, it must be said — it is, in both content and tone, a far more somber beast.”
Instead, the movie is more of a twisted, slightly comedic commentary about racism, more specifically the hypocritical nature of the predominant culture in America. That’s where Collider found problems with the movie, in that the message at the core of the movie feels superficial and lacking in the significance and poignancy that was likely intended. You can read more in their full review, but beware that it dives into some slightly spoilery details that haven’t been revealed in any of the trailers yet (including the one above).
At the very least, even if the movie doesn’t quite come together to pack the punch that many were hoping for, there seems to be consistent praise for the performances put in by Matt Damon in the lead role, as well as Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac. That might be enough to make it worth seeing.

Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns…the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. This is Suburbicon.
Head to Suburbicon in theaters on October 27, 2017.

In the film, Matt Damon plays Gardner Lodge, a suburb-dweller whose wife is seemingly murdered in a home invasion — and who then himself dives into the underbelly of crime and violence the Coens so often posit quietly pervades everyday life, until it, say, kills your family member.
“This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices,” reads the official description. Julianne Moore’s character — Lodge’s sister-in-law (or sister?), Margaret – enters the equation, and contributes to those choices. (It makes for a pretty fantastic-seeming equation, escalating in, amongst other things, a blonde-permed Moore crying while crushing pharmaceuticals with a rolling pin, which somehow seems like a beautiful exaggerated summation of her best work.)
And Oscar Isaac also soon comes into the mix, as a sharply dressed man named Roger who emphasizes he “could have [Damon’s character] killed in no time.” The plot revelations are pretty limited to what you see in the trailer thus far, but Clooney told Yahoo! Movies, “Oscar Isaac comes in and sets into motion a series of pretty horrendous crimes. Basically, Oscar gets to come in and steal the movie.”

Suburbicon will be out on November 3.

George Clooney and Joel and Ethan Coen have been working together for 17 wonderful years. The filmmakers often turn one of our most charismatic, confident and thoughtful actors into a complete and utter buffoon. For years, they’ve made Clooney play some of their most appealing dim-witted characters. In their latest collaboration, he ain’t playing no moron. In fact, he’s playing nobody in their latest collaboration. With Suburbicon, Clooney is directing a script from the Coen Brothers.
Below, check out the Suburbicon first look.
The Coen Brothers wrote the script for Warner Bros. around 1986. After it didn’t get made at the studio, they actually had to spend years finding their original script. Eventually, Joel and Ethan Coen found a micro file of the original screenplay in a Warner Bros. vault. They rewrote it with a modern day setting.
The brothers considered directing the film with Clooney in mind for a part. The project always intrigued Clooney, who eventually decided he wanted to direct it. Around 2005, he became attached to direct and star but, for whatever reason, it didn’t come together at the time. Clooney rewrote the script with his frequent collaborator and producer, Grant Heslov, set the story in 1959 and apparently added one element to make it more current.
Clooney has described his latest as “a really interesting, really funny, very dark comedy.” The story is about the Lodge Family living in a peaceful town. In the summer of ’59, Gardner (Matt Damon) and Margaret Lodge (Julianne Moore) learn the town has a dark side. Oscar Isaac co-stars this “tale of very flawed people making very bad choices,” which sounds on the money for a Coen Brothers story.

Here’s Gardner and his son, Nicky, in a home that looks like it’s been ransacked. The story does involve a home invasion that rattles the town, so maybe it’s the Lodge’s home that’s burglarized:

Suburbicon is Clooney’s follow-up to his first real miss as a director, The Monuments Men, which also starred Damon. Tonally, it didn’t come together right. It never felt as emotional, funny, or as inspiring as it should. Clooney’s other movies – yes, including Leatherheads – are made with confidence. The director behind Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, The Ides of March, and Good Night, and Good Luck‘s next movie is high up on my must-see list for the Fall.
