Team Brad Jacobs will turn to a couple of curling veterans to fill the vacancy created by Ryan Fry's decision to take an indefinite leave after his disqualification from the Red Deer Curling Classic. Two-time Olympian Marc Kennedy will play as a substitute at the Dec. 5-9 Canada Cup in Estevan, Sask., while Matt Wozniak will fill in at the Dec. 11-16 National in Conception Bay South, N.L., the team said Monday in a statement. "It's mixed emotions," Kennedy said Monday from Toronto before boarding a flight to Edmonton. "I'm excited to get back out there, to test out my hip and to have a chance to play with a pretty incredible team. I'm looking forward to that. I know they've been through a tough couple weeks here. "Hopefully I can come in and add a positive spark and help get them through this difficult time that Team Jacobs is going through." Fry announced last week that he would be taking a break from the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.-based team to focus on his "growth and self-improvement." His decision came a few days after he was ejected from a World Curling Tour event for what organizers called unsportsmanlike behaviour resulting from excessive drinking. Fry, who was playing as a substitute in Red Deer, was kicked out of the competition with teammates Jamie Koe, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby. All four players later issued statements to apologize for their actions. Organizers said Fry broke three brooms and that the team used foul language and was disruptive to other players on the ice. The WCT fined Fry $ 1,000 and said that his behaviour was the reason for the team's disqualification. "We are fortunate to have such great players step up and help us out in this time of need while Ryan takes the time he needs to manage his well-being," Jacobs said in an email. "It says a lot that two great players in Marc and Matt are willing to support us. We know they will fill Ryan's shoes very well and give us a great opportunity to compete as we try to win the Canada Cup and the National. Our line-up for the next two events will be:
Can Cup Slam Brad Jacobs Brad Jacobs Marc Kennedy E.J. Harnden E.J. Harnden Matt Wozniak Ryan Harnden Ryan Harnden —@TeamBradJacobs "We are excited to be only one week away from competing. Last week was a whirlwind for our team and quite stressful but thankfully it is behind us now. Our focus has now shifted to doing everything possible to be prepared for the Canada Cup. It's crucial we maintain a healthy mindset and are well rested going into the next few weeks of competition." Fry, 40, won Olympic gold at the 2014 Sochi Games with the Jacobs team. They also won the Tim Hortons Brier in 2013. Kennedy, 36, won Olympic gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games with skip Kevin Martin. He returned to the Pyeongchang Games this year with skip Kevin Koe but did not reach the podium. Wozniak, 35, was a longtime second on a Winnipeg team skipped by Mike McEwen. That rink disbanded after last season with McEwen forming a new team with skip Reid Carruthers. Wozniak will play his familiar position with Team Jacobs with E.J. Harnden moving to third, the team said in a post on Twitter. Kennedy announced last March that he would be taking a break from competitive curling to recharge and rest a nagging hip injury. He took on a consulting position with Curling Canada and has been practising through the autumn. He also teamed with Rachel Homan last month to win a mixed doubles event in Sherwood Park, Alta. "I think once I get out there and start playing a couple ends, I feel it will all come back pretty quickly," Kennedy said. "Hopefully I can make as many shots as the team needs me to." The Canada Cup men's and women's winners will earn spots in the 2021 Road to the Roar Pre-Trials. They will also qualify for a Curling World Cup event next season. Fry has represented Northern Ontario on five occasions at the Brier. He also won four provincial titles (2009-12) with skip Brad Gushue out of Newfoundland and Labrador and won a Manitoba crown in 2007 with skip Jeff Stoughton. Team Jacobs, which holds the No. 5 position in the men's world rankings, won a Grand Slam title earlier this month in Thunder Bay, Ont.

According to a message sent by Surgutneftegas to one of its customers, the oil company wants to “avoid any possible problems with payment in USD,” the news agency reports. “We do not comment on our commercial activity,” replied the company, Russia’s fourth largest by output.
The reported move comes in line with the recent comments from the Kremlin. Last month, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Russia could reject the greenback in oil trade.
“It is not ruled out. We have significantly reduced our investments in US assets. In fact, the dollar, which was considered the global currency, becomes a risky instrument for settlements,” he told Russian TV.
Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak has said that the government is considering the possibility of oil settlements in national currencies, especially with Turkey and Iran.
Surgutneftegas is not the only Russian energy company that is reported to be working to reduce dependence on the dollar. A Reuters source in Gazprom Neft, Russia’s third-biggest oil company by output, said its contracts already have a clause to trade without the US dollar. Gazprom’s oil subsidiary has not commented on the issue yet.
The largest Russian oil company Rosneft is also interested in diversifying. The firm has opened banking accounts in Hong Kong dollars and Chinese yuan. Rosneft has also prepared itself for the shutdown of SWIFT interbank cash transfer services, should Russia be shut out of the system as part of Western sanctions. A Russian equivalent of SWIFT was tested by Rosneft in December.

Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital on December 6 drove a stake through the heart of the two-state peace process, which envisions East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state along 1967 borders.
Following Trump’s declaration, Abbas, the chief Palestinian negotiator in previous talks, repeatedly dismissed the US as a trusted mediator in the peace process. Israel, unsurprisingly, continues to place its trust in the White House.
“If Abbas doesn’t want the US, then he doesn’t want peace,” Netanyahu told journalists on his return from India Friday. “There is no substitute for the United States.”
Palestinians continue to reject the American role in the peace process because the new American course of action has so far only led to deadly violence across the Palestinian occupied territory, Abbas said. “We will not trust the American administration which is no longer suitable for the role of mediator of the peace process. We will adhere to peace, but peace shall not be at any cost, and we will seek all options but not terrorism and violence,” Abbas in Cairo Wednesday.
“The announcement by US President [Donald] Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would not give Israel any legitimacy in it,” Abbas continued, as quoted by WAFA news. “America chose to violate international law and defy the will of the Arab and Islamic peoples and the world to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the Israeli occupation.”
To force Palestinians to return to the negotiating table with Israel, the US has undertaken steps to apply economic pressure. On Tuesday, Washington announced it’s withholding $ 65 million of a planned instalment of $ 125 million to the Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA. The UN agency provides social services, education and healthcare to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Before the announcement, Trump, in one of his tweets, accused the Palestinians of not showing enough “appreciation or respect” to the US after he had “taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table.”
“With the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” Trump questioned on January 2.
In the days following Trump’s announcement on the status of the Holy City and his orders to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, the US vetoed a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution which called for a reversal of Washington’s decision. World opposition to Washington’s new approach towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict took center stage on December 21, when the UN General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly voted in favor of a non-binding resolution calling on the US to rescind its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Only nine states voted against the UNGA resolution while 35 nations abstained.

Morata joined Chelsea for £70million this summer after spending much of last season on the Real Madrid bench.
The Spain international has arrived to replace Diego Costa who, although he wasn’t sold in the transfer window, has been ostracised from the first team.
And Morata told newspaper El Pais he must justify his transfer fee at Stamford Bridge.
“Fate has given me a chance,” he said.
“It is true that I have made some good games, I have scored goals that have earned points.
“And now I find a team that has made a huge financial commitment for a Real Madrid substitute.
“They have given me everything. Conte is with me until the death.”
Morata scored and assisted a goal in his first league appearance for Chelsea, coming off the bench in the 3-2 loss to Burnley.
The 24-year-old also found the flag in last weekend’s 2-0 triumph over Everton.
Last term he scored 20 goals for Real, having rejoined his boyhood club after two successful years at Juventus.
Asked by El Pais why Chelsea are a good choice for the striker, he said: “The difference is that Chelsea’s game is based on me.
“When we play with three up front we face opponents who defend with a line of three, as in Italy.
“The centre-back follows me and the other two take the wide men, Willian or Pedro.”

Google often likes to dip its toes into holidays and notable days to remind everyone what its apps can do (and could you use them, please?), and it’s recently added a special Mother’s Day assistant to its Photos app. Given that Google selects the photos and cuts it all together, it’s possibly the lowest-effort Mother’s Day ‘gift’ if you’ve totally forgotten and / or have no intention of buying a genuine card or seeing mom in person next weekend. (But seriously, you have a week and two days left to sort something, pull it together.)
Naturally, you’ll need to have taken photos of your mom to start with, and uploaded them to your Google Photos account. If you have the app installed on iOS, — it’s already there on most Android Phones — you can choose to sync photos every photo you take, which helps with facial identification needed for this maternal highlight reel. The notable part, this time, is that you can select not only your mother’s face, but also multiple kids, meaning I could get Google to shoehorn photos of my sister and brother alongside your madre, although that has its own drawbacks…
A few minutes later, an automated movie will appear in the app’s Assistant tab, complete with heartstring-tugging soundtrack. The irony with such a lazy tool is that you need plenty of uploaded photos to fill in a 45-second highlight reel. This included combinations of me, my brother, my sister and my mom, as well as several enforced sibling-mother family photos. Unfortunately, as my sister and I like to take drunk selfies when we hangout (siblings!), there was an awful lot of those too, with no mother in sight.
Also, unlike the manual highlight videos you can make inside Google Photos (or Facebook’s friendship anniversary clips), you’re stuck with what Google picks, meaning there’s a few blurry shots and HDR iterations of the same photo, twice, in my Mothers’ Day tribute. If you’re often taking photos with your mom, this will result in better Mother’s Day clips, but it’s still no substitute for putting a little more effort in.
(Update: That said, I sent my automated video to my Mom, who immediately texted me to say she had tears in her eyes. Aww.)
“It seems that these countries either do not trust the OPCW, or trying to influence its work in the direction they need,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday referring to the latest French report that echoed previous claims by British and Turkish experts.
On Wednesday, France ‘declassified’ a 5-page document accusing Syrian government forces of carrying out a sarin nerve gas attack on April 4 in northern Syria, which reportedly killed up 100 people and injured hundreds more.
The French report in its conclusions stated that only President Bashar Assad or members of his inner circle could have ordered the strike on the town of Khan Shaykhun in Idlib province.
The document claims the conclusions are based on samples obtained from the impact strike on the ground and a blood sample from a victim.
Earlier, the UK and France claimed that their experts have “received” samples from the site of the incident, which they passed on to OPCW labs who then identified the chemical agent used in the attack as sarin gas.
The Russian Foreign Ministry questioned the validity of the evidence and consistency of the French intelligence report in general.
“Preliminary analysis of the five-page French document raises many questions: First of all, regarding the circumstances under which the French side obtained the samples allegedly gathered directly at the scene of the incident.”
“If the French intelligence services collected the samples themselves, then it means they have free access to the area controlled (as they say in the report) by Al-Qaeda-linked armed groups of the Syrian opposition.”
“If the samples were obtained in some other place… then the consistency of the conducted analysis is immediately in question,” the ministry said, noting that under international regulations, the samples, in order to avoid any meddling, must be absolutely secure across the entire route; from the scene to laboratory.
Moscow also questioned the validity of the French claim that the chemical found in the sample – hexamine – was a hallmark of sarin produced by the Syrian government.
The Russian Foreign Ministry queried how the French established the “full recipe” when no ready-to-use form of sarin was ever found in the hands of Damascus and all the “precursors” of the deadly gas were exported outside Syria per 2013 agreement.
In addition, Russia noted that all the installations under Damascus’ control “on which the synthesis of sarin could be performed, were destroyed, as confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.”
According to the French report, the new sample was compared to another one of questionable integrity; this time obtained from a 2013 attack, in which an intact, unexploded “hand grenade” containing 100 milliliters of sarin was allegedly dropped from a government helicopter.
“The use of hand grenades for the deployment of sarin is something new. As far as we know, there were no precedents in the entire history of chemical weapons existence. Such an exotic chemical munition, to put it mildly, is not safe for those who would use it,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Moscow once again underlined that a national investigation will never be as reliable as an international inquiry, and only a mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) can establish the truth regarding the alleged use of chemical weapons.
“Once again, we call for stopping foul political games around the Syrian chemical dossier and to make the steps Russia has been insisting on for the past three weeks, which is, to delegate a group of experts directly to Khan Shaykhun and Shayrat,” the press release said.
“The group should include representatives of the countries that are not blinded by hatred towards Syria’s legitimate government.”

A-League: Brisbane goalkeeper Michael Theo has made a terrific double save to start the elimination final against Western Sydney.

Brisbane Roar celebrate winning the A-League Elimination Final.
IN the 99th minute, Jamie Young was sitting on the bench watching a goalkeeping masterclass from Michael Theo.
Half an hour later, after a thrilling game was capped by a penalty shootout of extraordinary quality, Young stood tall and thwarted Jumpei Kusukami to prevail 6-5.
The classic elimination final finished 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, after goals in each half from Terry Antonis and Jamie Maclaren.
These two teams only know thrilling, with this clash the sequel – and Roar’s revenge – for last season’s 5-4 Wanderers triumph in the semi-final.
ANALYSIS: Roar’s Broich ‘punt’ that changed the game

WHAAAT? Maclaren has his say on Manchester City rumours
Antonis scored from the spot after Brendon Santalab was felled by Avram Papadopoulos on the cusp of half-time, while Thomas Broich, who was poor in the first-half after a week in the headlines, was masterful in the second, and created the chance on the counter-attack that Golden Boot winner Maclaren finished.
With the game finely balanced, Jaushua Sotirio came on in the 87th minute for the Wanderers and was sent off in the 103rd minute.
It left plenty for Tony Popovic’s side to do, and although they sent the game to the penalty spot, they ran into an inspired Young.

The custodian replaced Michael Theo – who had kept Brisbane in the match in the first-half – and the veteran is likely to be out for the rest of the season.
“We know to be a successful team, you need a good goalkeeper,” John Aloisi said.
“I really believe the goalkeeper is the most important player on the pitch … I’m lucky I’ve got two outstanding goalkeepers who push themselves at training.
“They give me a headache … Youngy deserves it tonight because he worked hard in training and made sure he was ready.”
Young said: “To put that into words, I’ve waited a long time for that.
“I’m just happy to be in the winning team.
“To come on, make an impact, positive, it’s special.”
He added: “Without (Theo), we wouldn’t have been in this position.”

Here’s how the game unfolded, and the moments that mattered.
MICHAEL THEO KEEPS IT 1-0
No one has won more A-League grand finals than Theo, and his big game status was clear with his imperious first-half.
Simply, Wanderers should have been up within the first 10 minutes. But Theo made a phenomenal double save in the sixth minute to thwart both Brendon Santalab and then, within seconds, Nico Martinez.
He was also on duty to get down smartly to his right to deny Martinez with a shot late in the first-half.
INCREDIBLE

It was all Western Sydney in the first-half as they conjured 21 shots to Brisbane’s eight. It took them until the cusp of the half to take the lead, with the Roar stabilising slightly after the washy opening 10 minutes.
In commentary, Robbie Slater remarked: “Tony Popovic will be filthy they didn’t take the lead with those two massive chances”.
In that frenetic few minutes after Theo’s double save, Terry Antonis drove close from distance, and Jade North had to clear a half chance off the line, before Martinez danced towards the box and fired just wide.
Slater assessed: “They’re picking up so much space in the lines and it’s not even been 10 minutes”.
ALOISI’S GAMBLE BACKFIRES EARLY
Aloisi chose Jade North at right back, but for stages in the first period, the Wanderers had a lot of joy by getting in behind the spaces left by Brandon Borrello and Thomas Broich.
However, Roar were not without chances of their own. Brett Holman fizzed inches wide from the areas he scored twice from last week, North had a header cleared and Borrello was starting to get to the right byline, fizzing dangerous balls into the box. Holman’s work was crucial – his running off the ball was a threat to Western Sydney, particularly when he ran beyond Maclaren. The best example was in the 26th minute, but his no-look, first time pass from the right just evaded the striker in the box.
WANDERERS DOMINATE, DESERVE THE LEAD
Heading into the half hour mark, Popovic’s side had 75% of the ball for the previous five minutes.
“Rotation in the middle of the park, they’re not dealing with it Brisbane,” Slater said.
At the break, with Western Sydney up 1-0, John Kosmina assessed: “Wanderers dominated possession, penetration, controlled middle of the park: movement off and on the ball has been great.
“Brisbane have been dragged out of shape all over the place.”
Rudan added: “Their midfield trio of Antonis, Baccus, Nichols … is a lot more mobile. All three bodies get into the box, that’s why it’s 21 (shots) to 8.
“The other area – Martinez, who occupies that left hand side, rotated with Mitch Nichols. I thought that worked wonders.”
VAR HAS A LOOK, BUT PEN GIVEN
On the cusp of half-time came the first blow, with Santalab going down under clumsy but slight contact from Papadopoulos.
Again, the opening was carved by Neville getting in behind Broich, but from there, Strebre Delovski took a full minute in the VAR box to confirm the on field decision was correct.
John Aloisi was apoplectic at the break, charging onto the field to complain, but at half-time, Fox Sports pundit Mark Rudan said:
Aloisi ERUPTS at the break
But Rudan says
Contact? Yes
Did Santa get to the ball? Yes
Did he make most of it? yeshttps://t.co/22JTVVJG3vpic.twitter.com/AoU7hHd8zP— FOX SPORTS Football (@FOXFootballLive) April 21, 2017
“Was there contact? Yes.
“Did Santalab get to the ball? Yes.
“Did Brendon Santalab make the most of the contact? Yes he did.”
VAR was called upon again in the dyeing stages for a Roar appeal, but the penalty appeals were denied.
NEVER WRITE OFF THE MAESTRO, ROAR EDGE BACK INTO IT
Fox Sports sideline reporter Nick Meredith quipped that Broich mentioned to him “I’m too old for this stuff”.
In the first-half, it looked like it.
In the second, he was imperious yet again, and with his growing influence in the game, the Roar played their part in a pulsating climax.
Kosmina was asked on the Fox Sports half-time show whether he would take Broich off, and he replied: “It’s his last game, you want him to perform, he hasn’t so far”.
Marvellous

Never write off a legend.
With the tables turning at the start of the second period, the German was the catalyst for Roar’s equaliser, threading the decisive pass on the counter attack before Jamie Maclaren prodded home to make it 1-1.

In a perfect symbol of his complete reversal of form, he tracked back industriously to win a ball deep in his own half in the 70th minute, before unleashing Maclaren on the counter. The striker tried to shoot up against two defenders, but was thwarted.
Broich … doesn’t do the dirty work?

The second half was a breathless affair at times, and then it was Vedran Janjetovic and Scott Neville’s chance to be the heroes with clutch stops on the line to deny Corey Brown and Brett Holman.
Borrello had a golden chance to bury Holman’s shot on the rebound, but could not convert.
Former Sydney FC keeper Janjetovic was the hero at the death, matching Theo earlier, with a top class save to tip a Borrello volley over in the 90th minute.
The supplier?
Broich.
“Now Aloisi’s thinking ‘how am I not 2-1 ahead?’” Slater said, adding: “The great players can pull themselves out of it, and he certainly has in this second-half”.

SOTIRIO’S HORROR SHOW, NERVES RISE IN EXTRA-TIME
You couldn’t take your eye off the action as we went into extra-time. It was tense, end to end finals fair.
Young saved brilliantly off Santalab with his first touch after Theo hobbled.
Then Sotirio, who only came on in the 87th minute and had already missed a gilt-edged chance, got his marching orders for a late challenge on Brown to pick up a second yellow.
Popovic admitted after that the send off was the turning point, with his young sub starting to stretch the game in his brief cameo before his brain snap.
“We lost the momentum, we lost the advantage,” Popovic said.

Aloisi rolled the tactical dice to take advantage of Sotirio’s send off, moving Borrello to fullback, replacing North with Nicholas D’Agostino at the half-time break.
As the Roar started to edge possession, Tommy Oar shot just wide from the edge of the box, D’Agostino thumped a header into Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Oar struck a free-kick at Janjetovic, but despite the extra man, Roar had to go to the spot.
