For a while now, Apple has been encouraging app developers to consider subscriptions as a key revenue source, and the company is introducing some new options for developers that it hopes will make the option more attractive. In the past few days, Apple has informed developers that they will now be able to target current and recent subscribers with promotional rates on subscriptions. That means subscribers will be able to offer discounts to try to get you back if you lapse, or they might try to entice you to stay if you’re considering leaving.

Developers could previously offer limited-time subscription discounts but only to new users. The new model is available in recent beta releases known as iOS 12.2, macOS Mojave 10.14.4, and tvOS 12.2, and it is likely to emerge as the final public release for each. Apple will facilitate three different types of offer for developers who want to retain or regain subscribers.

Up until now, if you saw a YouTube video you liked embedded in a website, you had to click through the video to YouTube’s page in order to subscribe to that channel. Now, YouTube is making it a little easier for viewers to see the videos they want (and for channel operators to grab those subscribers). Going forward, YouTube embeds will feature a “Subscribe” button.

You can see the subscribe button in action in the video below, which is our Samsung Galaxy Book 2 hands-on. If you hover over the Engadget logo on the top left, an option to subscribe to our channel will appear. The feature was first spotted by 9to5Google.

Amazon on Friday announced that it has raised the price of its Prime membership program for those who subscribe on a month-to-month basis.

The plan previously cost $ 10.99 a month, but it will now cost $ 12.99 a month. That means the price of subscribing to the monthly Prime plan for a full year has jumped 18 percent, from $ 131.88 to $ 155.88. Those who currently subscribe to the monthly plan will see the price hike take effect on their first payment after February 18.

The e-commerce giant said it has also raised the rate of its cheaper Prime plan for students from $ 5.49 a month to $ 6.49 a month. The Prime Student plan launched this past October.

(Points for the clever title!)

The show — created by Sarah Watson (Parenthood) and based on the life of Hearst Magazines COO and former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles — officially debuts with a two-hour premiere on July 11, but the pilot preview provides a substantial sampling of the drama’s “stealth feminism.”

The Bold Type RecapJane (played by Faking It‘s Katie Stevens), Kat (Chasing Life‘s Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Political Animals‘ Meghann Fahy) are friends who work together at the Cosmo-esque publication Scarlet. Jane’s first day as a newly promoted writer is off to a bad start, with editor-in-chief Jacqueline (Transparent‘s Melora Hardin) rejecting all of her pitches. Rather than being a Mean Boss Lady, Jacqueline pushes Jane — she even ignores a call from Beyoncé to counsel Jane! — and gives her new writer an assignment that hits close to home. The resulting article about stalking her social media-less ex to get closure on their breakup earns a glowing review from Jacqueline.

Sutton, meanwhile, is still toiling away as an assistant, but there are big developments in her love life: she’s in a secret, no-strings-attached sexual relationship with board member Richard (Mad Men‘s Sam Page). When Jane and Kat discover the affair, they’re understandably concerned about what it would mean for Sutton’s career, if the truth ever came out. Life isn’t exactly fair, so Richard will probably get a pat on the back, while Sutton will be known as the assistant who slept with a superior, her friends argue. But this is more than just a fling for Sutton, so she tells Richard that she deserves to be the girl he can’t stop thinking about and that she wants to be asked out on a proper date — which he then does.

Social media boss Kat, perhaps the boldest of The Bold Type, fights for an article when a spread about a Muslim, lesbian artist falls through. She goes directly to the artist to get her approval for the piece and ends up bonding with the young woman. The two click so much that a distressed Kat practically comes apart after the woman is detained for smuggling vibrators, which Kat gave her, into a repressed foreign country. So maybe Kat is not as straight as she earlier declared?
