‘Underwater Chernobyl’: Norway burying Nazi submarine in sand to stem leak of toxic chemicals https://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/ https://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 21:22:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/

A Dutch firm has been commissioned by the Norwegian government to bury a sunken Nazi submarine in sand to stop the 1,800 barrels of toxic chemicals onboard from leaking into the sea.

More than 60 years after the 2,400-ton U-boat was torpedoed by the British Navy off the coast of Norway, the vessel continues to leak dangerous mercury from rusted containers resting 500 feet (152 meters) below the surface.

About 4 kilograms (8lbs) of the toxic mental oozes into the water each year, contaminating 30,000 square metres of seabed, high numbers of fish and enforcing a boat and fishing ban in the area about two miles off the coast of Bergen.

Now, a Dutch company Van Oord has been hired to bury the wreck, and 11 acres of the seabed, in 100,000 tons of rubble to stem the leakage. The burial operation, expected to cost up to $ 32 million, will start next year and finish in 2020. Researchers say the technique has been effective in containing about 30 mercury-contaminated sites over the last 20 years.

Previously described as an “underwater Chernobyl” by a spokeswoman for the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the process is not a permanent solution, but simply a delaying tactic for the the 65 tons of metallic mercury that will be leaking into the sea for decades to come. Campaigners reportedly wanted the wreck to be brought ashore but authorities deemed the suggestions to be too risky as the bottles could break up as they were moved.

U-864 was struck in early 1945 as it headed for Japan carrying jet parts, killing all 73 crew members onboard. It was first discovered in March 2003 by by a Royal Norwegian Navy minesweeper after being alerted by local fisherman.

  • Elon Musk has offered his assistance and floated plans to save the soccer team stranded in a Thai cave network.
  • He said he sent a mini-submarine to Thailand, which is expected to arrive Monday night local time.
  • However, rescue efforts are already underway and may be over by the time Musk’s submarine arrives.

A tiny submarine is on its way to Thailand, sent by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to help rescue the remaining members of a youth soccer team who are trapped in a cave.

On Sunday night, Must tweeted that the mini-submarine would arrive around 11 p.m. on Monday Thailand time. However, this may be too late to be of use in the rescue mission.

Scuba divers in Thailand have already rescued four of the 12 boys who have been stranded, along with their coach, in a flooded cave. And they are hoping to rescue the rest in the next couple of days. But in the meantime, Elon Musk has continued working on alternative strategies divers could use if conventional diving proves too difficult the remaining boys.

On Saturday, Musk settled on the idea of building “a tiny, kid-size submarine using the liquid oxygen transfer tube of Falcon rocket as hull.” He ordered SpaceX engineers to begin building the device, saying that it could be ready by the end of the day on Saturday.

Elon Musk is quickly solidifying his offer to help rescue a boys’ soccer team trapped in a Thailand cave, and in just the way you would expect from a technology entrepreneur. He has revealed that the “primary path” for his attempt will involve a “kid-size submarine” that uses the liquid oxygen transfer tube of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as its hull. He added that it be “extremely robust” and would support many as four air tanks, with four handles that could be used as hitching points for ropes and cables.

The project would take “about 8 hours” to build, Musk added, or less than half the 17 hours it would take to fly it to Thailand.

It’s not certain that the Thai government is committed to using the mini sub, and there’s still plenty of risk in navigating between rocks and other hazards. Not that officials may have other options. Some of the children don’t know how to swim, and those that did would still face a perilous journey. And with heavy rain coming in the days ahead, the team might not have the option of waiting it out. The submarine would be relatively safe, even if it didn’t get rigorous testing before entering service.

Elon Musk tweeted on Saturday that a team of SpaceX engineers is hours away from completing work on a “tiny kid-sized submarine” that could be used to extract 12 teenagers and preteens who are stranded with their soccer coach in a flooded cave in Thailand. Musk has had a team of engineers working on the problem for the last couple of days and has been keeping the world updated on the work via Twitter.

On Thursday night, Musk tweeted about an idea to use an inflatable nylon tube to help the kids escape. By Friday afternoon, Musk’s thinking had evolved. He tweeted that his team was working on building “double-layer Kevlar pressure pods with Teflon coating to slip by rocks.” A mid-day tweet on Saturday provided another update:

And this isn’t just a theory: Musk says that his team is building the contraption now. “Construction complete in about 8 hours, then 17 hour flight to Thailand,” Musk tweeted just before noon, California time.

Aston Martin is ready with your submarine, Mr. Bond https://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-is-ready-with-your-submarine-mr-bond/ https://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-is-ready-with-your-submarine-mr-bond/#respond Thu, 03 May 2018 00:27:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-is-ready-with-your-submarine-mr-bond/ Aston Martin and Triton Submarines have teamed to build probably the world’s most stylish and luxurious way to dive beneath the waves. Called Project Neptune, this two-passenger mini submarine looks like something designed and developed by Q Branch for James Bond. Though to be fair, the evildoers at Spectre might also appreciate a submersible that works a little Aston flair into its design.

First announced last September, the Project Neptune submarine has now been revealed in its final production format. Looking equal parts speedboat and lunar rover, the design is dominated by a clear bubble pressure hull that permits an expansive view of the watery world around you.

There is seating for three, with room for a pilot and two passengers. The pilot seat is in the middle, positioned slightly behind the two front passenger seats. Capable of diving to depths of 500 meters, the submarine has a top speed of 5 knots — or not quite 6 miles per hour, for all you non-nautical types. While that’s not exactly DB11 territory, Florida-based Triton says the the Project Neptune sub has roughly four times the acceleration of the company’s flagship model, the 3300/3 submersible.

Triton builds a wide range of subs, ranging from pure utilitarian models that can dive to the deepest depths of the ocean floor, to posh creations that cater to super-wealthy clientele with a spirit of adventure. It goes without saying which customer base Project Neptune is meant to entice.

If there is any doubt, simply peek inside. Forget any images you might have had of vinyl seats and a maze of pipes and knobs peppering the cabin. The seats are leather-trimmed with Aston Martin logos on the backrests, while the rest of the interior is finished in lightweight carbon fiber. “The interior is quintessentially Aston Martin,” says John Ramsay, chief technical officer at Triton Submarines. “The prototypes look incredible, being simultaneously functional and beautiful.”

Because you don’t want to have the exact same mini-sub as your neighbors — perish the thought — there will be three Designer Specifications available. These have been created by the British automaker’s own design team, while further customization can be handled by Aston’s bespoke service, fittingly called Q by Aston Martin.

With the least expensive Aston Martin costing about $ 150,000, how much will it take to pair your 2019 Vantage with your own Aston mini-sub? Well, you’d better budget for something more along the lines of the company’s Valkyrie hyper-car, which costs just north of $ 3 million. Triton submarines aren’t cheap, so don’t expect a bargain on one sporting the Aston Martin logo.

If you want to see the Project Neptune for yourself, book some first-class accommodations for the next flight to Barcelona, Spain, where the posh sub will be on display during this week’s LYBRA Superyacht Show. You might also get a glimpse of Aston’s other water-bound creation, the stunning 37-foot AM37 speedboat.

‘Yellow Submarine’ is Sailing Back to Theaters for Its 50th Anniversary https://briefnews.eu/yellow-submarine-is-sailing-back-to-theaters-for-its-50th-anniversary/ https://briefnews.eu/yellow-submarine-is-sailing-back-to-theaters-for-its-50th-anniversary/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 18:21:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yellow-submarine-is-sailing-back-to-theaters-for-its-50th-anniversary/ yellow submarine re-release

It’s The Beatles‘ yellow submarine, we’re all just living in it.

The British rock band’s classic 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine is getting a re-release in theaters across the U.S., in celebration of its 50th anniversary. It’s probably the closest thing we’ll get to a Beatles reunion, so get ready to buy your tickets now.

Released in 1968, Yellow Submarine has become the epoch of pop art experimentation, blending together surreal animation with beloved Beatles pop songs.

Now, Abramorama, Apple Corps Ltd. and Universal Music Group are teaming up to give the classic animated film a theatrical re-release for its 50th anniversary, according to ComingSoon.Net. Yellow Submarine is receiving a 4K digital resolution restoration by Triage Motion Picture Services, while Universal Music Group’s Abbey Road Studios is remixing the film’s songs and score in 5.1 stereo surround sound. And the delicate hand-drawn animation has been restored meticulously by hand, frame by frame.

Yellow Submarine Re-release Trailer

Yellow Submarine is a trippy, surreal pop art masterpiece that was initially released when the Beatles were at their peak. Named after one of their most famous songs, “Yellow Submarine,” the part animated, part live-action film follows the fantastical story of the music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland, a paradise by the sea. When Pepperland is attacked, the Beatles must band together to save their musical paradise. Naturally, it’s all set to the tunes of the Fab Four’s most beloved releases, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “All You Need Is Love,” and “It’s All Too Much.”

Richard Abramowitz, CEO of Abramorama said of the re-release:

“We’re thrilled to have the privilege of bringing ‘Yellow Submarine’ back to the big screen so that 3 generations of happy Beatles fans can enjoy the ground-breaking animation and classic tunes and that have long been part of our collective cultural DNA.”

The theatrical re-release will take place in theaters across the U.S. Information on local screenings can be found by clicking here.

The music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland are under siege by the Blue Meanies, a nasty group of music-hating creatures. The Lord Mayor of Pepperland (Dick Emery) dispatches sailor Old Fred (Lance Percival) to Liverpool, England, where he is to recruit the help of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr). The sympathetic Beatles ride a yellow submarine to the occupied Pepperland, where the Blue Meanies have no chance against the Fab Four’s groovy tunes.

This is how Navy SEALs swim out of a submerged submarine https://briefnews.eu/this-is-how-navy-seals-swim-out-of-a-submerged-submarine/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-how-navy-seals-swim-out-of-a-submerged-submarine/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 15:44:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-how-navy-seals-swim-out-of-a-submerged-submarine/ USS John Warner submarine SEAL hatchDaniel Brown/Business Insider

  • We saw a compartment on the USS John Warner called a “lockout trunk.”
  • Lockout trunks are used as an escape hatch for the crew and to get SEALs off the ship.

During our recent tour of the USS John Warner nuclear-powered submarine, we got a chance to see a small compartment known as a “lockout trunk.”

“This is actually how we would get SEALs off the ship submerged,” Senior Chief Mark Eichenlaub told Business Insider.

“So you would stick a platoon of SEALs in here, 14 guys … you fill this chamber with water until you match the outer sea pressure. Once the pressure in and outside the ship match, the hatch will lift off open, and they can swim out of a fully filled chamber into open ocean.”

Once the chamber is filled with water, matching the pressure inside and out, “there’s an internal locking mechanism that would open” the top hatch where SEALs swim out, Senior Chief Darryl Wood told Business Insider.

The SEALs can then swim to retrieve what is known as a special-forces operations box, which would be filled with weapons and needed gear, from the tower.

In addition to getting SEALs off the ship, lockout trunks can be used for the entire crew to escape in case the submarine is downed.

A ‘short, violent’ explosion was heard, and it could have been the end of the missing Argentine submarine https://briefnews.eu/a-short-violent-explosion-was-heard-and-it-could-have-been-the-end-of-the-missing-argentine-submarine/ https://briefnews.eu/a-short-violent-explosion-was-heard-and-it-could-have-been-the-end-of-the-missing-argentine-submarine/#respond Sun, 26 Nov 2017 11:48:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-short-violent-explosion-was-heard-and-it-could-have-been-the-end-of-the-missing-argentine-submarine/ It seems like Argentina’s missing submarine may have exploded.
The navy heard a “short, violent” explosion that would make some sense as the fate of the missing submarine.
The sub had 44 on board and has been missing since last week.

People walk behind an Argentine national flag displayed on a fence, in support of the 44 crew members of the ARA San Juan submarine who are missing at sea, at an Argentine naval base in Mar del Plata, Argentina, November 22, 2017. The words on the flag read:

BAHIA BLANCA, Argentina (Reuters) – An abnormal sound detected in the South Atlantic ocean around the time that an Argentine navy submarine sent its last signal last week was “consistent with an explosion,” a navy spokesman said on Thursday.

Spokesman Enrique Balbi described the blast in the morning of Nov. 15 as “abnormal, singular, short, violent” and “non-nuclear.”

The navy did not have enough information to say what the cause of the explosion could have been or whether the ARA San Juan could have been attacked, Balbi told reporters.

A huge sea and air hunt is being conducted for the vessel, which had 44 crew on board when it went missing last week. The disappearance has plunged relatives of the crew members into an anguished wait for news and transfixed the South American country.

The information about the explosion received on Thursday morning was consistent with a separate report received on Wednesday of an “acoustic anomaly” in the same area and around the same time the vessel gave its last signal, Balbi said.

“This is very important because it allows us to correlate and confirm the acoustic anomaly from the U.S. report yesterday,” he said.

“Here, we’re talking about a singular, short, violent, non-nuclear event, consistent with an explosion.”

The site of the abnormal sound was close to where the German-built vessel gave its last location, about 430 km (270 miles) off the coast.

Earlier on Thursday, a U.S. embassy spokeswoman said an object detected by a U.S. Navy plane near the area where the submarine sent its last signal turned out not to be the missing vessel. The plane, a P-8A Poseidon, was one of dozens of Argentine and foreign boats and planes involved in the hunt.

ARGENTINA SUBMARINE 01Reuters

Concerns are growing that the submarine could be near the last of its seven-day oxygen supply.

Relatives of the crew members have gathered at a naval base in the coastal city of Mar del Plata, some 400 km (250 miles) south of Buenos Aires, where the search is being coordinated.

The submarine was en route from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, to Mar del Plata when it reported an electrical malfunction shortly before disappearing last week.

The submarine was launched in 1983 and underwent maintenance in 2008 in Argentina. Its four diesel engines and its electric propeller engines were replaced, according to specialist publication Jane’s Sentinel.
