In case anyone needed a reminder that P.K. Subban is one the nicest players in the NHL, the Nashville Predators defenceman added yet another act of kindness to an already extensive list of good deeds on Saturday night.

Reddit user Hockey7676 posted a video on Monday that appears to show Subban, 29, giving a message of encouragement to the user's 13-year-old son, who he says was subjected to racist taunts this year. 

"I can tell you this right now — as long as you're still breathing in this world — you got to believe in yourself and let nobody tell you what you can and can't do, especially if it's because of the colour of your skin," Subban said in the 43-second clip that appears to have been filmed at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, where the Predators played on Friday.

Subban and the Predators are in the middle of a six-game road trip that included a 4-1 victory over his former team in Montreal on Saturday. Subban scored on Monday night to help his team to a 4-0 win over the Maple Leafs in Toronto. 

Subban's partner and star alpine skier Lindsey Vonn seemingly confirmed the authenticity of the video, sharing a post about it on Monday on Twitter with the caption, "One of the many reason I love this man!"

Subban has been limited to 25 games this season due to injury and has four goals and 12 assists — two of which came against the Canadiens this past weekend. 

Subban's social media often involves interactions with young fans, and in 2015 he pledged a $ 10-million donation to the Montreal Children's Hospital.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service will be testing facial recognition technology in a handful of locations across the central core of the British capital on both Monday and Tuesday for eight hours each day.

This trial marks the seventh such trial in London since 2016. The Met has said in addition to the December 17-18 tests, there will be three more, which have yet to be scheduled.

According to the police, these trials, which “will be used overtly with a clear uniformed presence and information leaflets will be disseminated to the public,” are set to take place specifically in the vicinity of Soho, Piccadilly Circus, and Leicester Square.

Butina was arrested and detained in Washington DC in July on espionage charges. The 29-year old is accused of acting as an agent of the Russian government without informing the US attorney general. Since her arrest, representatives of the Russian embassy have checked in on Butina, most recently visiting her on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the embassy says Butina is being subjected to “psychological pressure and humiliation” as she awaits trial.

Butina is being denied walks outdoors, and is strip searched after every visit with lawyers, embassy staff, and acquaintances. Butina is allegedly subjected to night checks every 15 minutes, a practice usually reserved for suicidal prisoners.

“There are attempts to break her will,” the embassy said, and announced that it would be sending an official complaint to the US State Department over Butina’s treatment in jail.

Butina is allegedly being denied letters in her native Russian, as her jailers think they might contain “coded messages.” Embassy staff say that she has not been provided with an interpreter.

On an earlier visit, embassy staff raised concern that Butina was being denied proper medical care. This time, the situation is apparently much the same. A painful swelling on Butina’s leg – a result of her cell’s cold temperature – has not been treated, and the jailed activist is given only painkillers.

Butina’s arrest was covered with glee by much of the American media, who published salacious stories, alleging that she traded sex for favors as she cosied up to Republican politicians. Likewise, the #FreeMariaButina social media campaign launched by the Russian Foreign Ministry was instantly hijacked with abusive and sexist comments.

“The hysteria in American social media, further flamed by Russophobic publications in the mainstream media, brings to mind the Salem Witch Trials,” read the embassy’s Facebook post.

Before falling victim to Washington’s anti-Russian crusade, Butina moved to the US on a student visa in 2016. She graduated from American University in Washington DC with a master’s degree in international relations earlier this year.

Butina is also the founder of Right to Bear Arms, a pro-gun organization that lobbies to change Russia’s strict gun laws. Right to Bear Arms has developed ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the US. In addition, Butina met and socialized with several conservative political figures.

“Maria holds up strong, her determination to prove her innocence only grows more resilient,” read the embassy’s post. Staff also announced that they will be setting up a legal defense fund for Butina.

A European court has rejected a request to find that a group of 14 men detained during internment in Northern Ireland suffered torture. The prisoners were subjected to white noise, sleep and food deprivation as well as beatings.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected the Irish government petition to revise a 1978 judgement against the UK and find that the prisoners, known as the ‘hooded men’ were subjected to torture.

The men were exposed to methods known as the “five techniques” – hooding, white noise, stress positions, sleep deprivation, and food deprivation. The practice was applied over an unknown period of four to seven days for an unspecified number of hours at a time. Similar interrogation techniques have since been deployed by the CIA and outlined in a 2014 Senate Torture report.

The men, who were all Catholic, were detained in 1971 at the height of The Troubles after Northern Ireland used the Special Powers Act to introduce internment without trial for those suspected of being involved in violence. They were hooded and flown by helicopter to a secret location, later revealed as a British Army camp outside Derry in Northern Ireland. Before landing they were dangled out of the helicopter and told they were high in the air, although they were close to the ground. None of the individuals were ever convicted of wrongdoing.

In 1978 the ECHR found that the British authorities’ actions amounted to inhuman and degrading treatment, but not torture. Following a TV documentary in 2014, which brought archived files to light, the Irish government requested a revision of the original judgment.

The Irish government submitted that a psychiatrist who gave evidence as an expert for the British government misled the Commission by saying that the effects of the ill-treatment were short-lived when he knew that the use of the five techniques had long-lasting and severe effects. The government cited archived documents that allegedly revealed the British authorities had tried to prevent the court from accessing the full truth about the five techniques.

Overall, the court found that the documents did not demonstrate facts which were unknown at the time. It added that it could also not be said that such knowledge might have had a decisive influence leading to a finding of torture, noting that the original judgment had made no reference to the issue of such long-term effects. The revision request was dismissed by a chamber of seven judges by six votes to one.

Amnesty International, who visited the detainees in 1971 and stated then there was evidence of torture at the camp, described today’s decision as “disappointing.” It noted that the ruling is not a statement that the ‘five techniques’ do not constitute torture as it is legally defined today.

“What has been revealed in the files withheld by the UK government cannot be denied. These men were tortured, and with approval at the highest levels of government. The record of what these men endured in those interrogation rooms 47 years ago, and the devastating impact on them afterwards, still stands,” Amnesty said.

A Holocaust survivor claims she was subjected to a “very demeaning body search” by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The ordeal took place after she gave a lecture on her experiences in Auschwitz.

Eva Mozes Kor was forced to undergo an extremely intrusive body search before she was allowed to board her flight home after she gave a lecture in Albuquerque, New Mexico over the weekend. According to CBS News, the 84-year-old Kor stands at four feet nine inches tall and uses a walker to get around; hardly the kind of person that presents a clear threat to national security.

“There has to be some way that at age 84 I can get some clearance by the POWERS of government from this procedure,” she tweeted. “As I lecture about surviving Auschwitz, I barely survive the TSA body search. I detest it.”

Kor had just delivered a lecture on her experiences during the Holocaust, where she endured inhumane scientific human experiments conducted by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, also known as the ‘Angel of Death.’ She was just 10 years old at the time.

Kor and her family were taken from their home in Romania and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Her parents didn’t survive, but Kor and her twin sister Miriam managed to survive both the brutal conditions and the inhumane experiments. Kos would later donate a kidney to her sister.

Kor later moved Indiana in the US where she became famous as an activist and established the Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors (CANDLES) Holocaust Museum. A documentary film about her life and how she came to terms with her ordeal and ultimately learned to forgive her Nazi captors is due to be released in April.

The TSA is notorious for its heavy-handed security procedures and it has often come under intense public scrutiny and criticism since its inception in November 2001, as a response to the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

Out of 167 children that were trafficked from France to the UK since last August, 104 minors remain missing, the Independent reported, citing figures provided by the Refugee Youth Service (RYS), a Calais-based charity.

Months after the Calais ‘Jungle’ was bulldozed by French authorities in October 2016, refugees, including unaccompanied minors, are still arriving on the banks of the English Channel, hoping to reach the UK. In response, Britain has scrapped the Dubs Amendment, allowing for the resettlement of 3,000 unaccompanied minors.

RYS tracks the records of minors who are known to have reached the UK from France illegally. Once on British soil, the charity refers them to the NSPCC’s Child Trafficking Advice Centre (CTAC), providing it with all the information needed to help locate them in the UK. CTAC then reports those cases to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) – a process set up by the government to identify and support victims of trafficking in the UK.

In their report, the publication noted that the actual number of missing kids could be much higher, as many of the minors remain “hidden” from child protection agencies after being told by their traffickers not to engage with the authorities.

“This is the tip of the iceberg,” Michael McHugh, the RYS coordination and child protection officer, told the Independent. “There are children here who are trying not to be seen, manipulated by people who don’t want them to be seen by us, worried about the state interfering. The true numbers will be far higher.”

Charities that deal with child welfare warned that the missing minors could be subject to sexual and drug abuse as well as labor exploitation by the individuals who smuggle them across borders.

Getting a child from France to the UK can cost around £9,000 ($ 11,700), the report estimates, which most minors are unable to pay. To cover the cost, children practically serve as slaves to the criminal gangs engaged in illegal trafficking.

“Both in Calais and once they reach the UK, children and young people are falling victim to sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, criminal exploitation,” Christine Beddoe, an adviser on tackling child trafficking who co-authored the report, said.

“Very high prices are demanded and if they don’t have families who can pay, then those young people are expected to do something to pay back that money, and then that turns into an exploitation situation,” she added.
Beddoe pointed out that sexual exploitation is the biggest problem faced by young male refugees. Because of the nature of the abuse, young boys are reluctant to report the abuse to the authorities.

In response to the report, the UK Home Office has issued a statement, stressing that Britain is doing everything to make sure that the minors arrive to its shores safely.

“We have already strengthened regulations on children’s homes and placed a duty on local authorities to tell us about all incidents of young people going missing,” the statement to the Independent reads.

“However, we know trafficked and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children can be particularly vulnerable. Our focus will continue to be on transferring all eligible minors to the UK as soon as possible and ensuring they arrive safely,” it added.

Shortly following that, the space agency announced that it had begun to study the possibility of adding crew members to the maiden launch of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

This seemed an ambitious ask for 2019. Not only was the agency already scrambling to meet a November 2018 deadline for an uncrewed test flight of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, but few of the life support systems needed to keep crew members alive during a spaceflight were planned to be ready before 2021. Also, it’s rare to launch crew on the first flight of any rocket, as engineers like to have confidence in their launch system before adding humans.
