There are no nice people in Westeros. Whether it be “Game of Thrones” or “House of the Dragon,” everyone is in it for themselves, no matter how nice they appear. At the end of the day, even if there are few genuinely good characters, they eventually get swallowed up and killed by the cruel world of “A Song of Ice and Fire.” Meanwhile, the rest of the smart characters recognize an opportunity when it presents itself in front of them, and they take it, no matter the consequences. 

But then, there’s Ser Criston Cole, a character that is neither good and nice enough to avoid doing selfish things, but also not smart enough to take advantage of his situation. Indeed, he may just be the stupidest character in Westeros since Ned Stark.

When we first meet him, Criston is like a cross of Ser Loras and Oberyn Martell, a handsome, popular-with-the-ladies knight who is also very good at duels and tournaments. He is also a man who rose above his station and proved his worth without the help of lineage, and when Rhaenyra made him part of the Kingsguard, it made sense since he was the only candidate with any real combat experience. 

A Fool For Love

Things got complicated when Rhaenyra had sex with Criston, even if it seemed consensual. That’s because Ser Criston Cole is actually a humongous idiot and a complete moron who cannot shut his pie hole for a minute. You see, Rhaenyra took a liking to Ser Criston, who seemed to have done the same.

So when Rhaenyra was forced to marry, she suggested she and Ser Criston continued seeing each other on the side while she performed her duties in public — a very good deal, right? A non-noble knight getting to be a member of a prestigious organization while also having the love of the most powerful person in Westeros? Sweet! Not for Criston, though.

You see, Criston is not the kind of man who would allow himself to simply be content with a good job and the love of a woman. He cannot fathom the idea of being with a powerful woman while he is her paramour (while probably being fine with the reverse). He scoffs at Rhaenyra’s suggestion that they stay together after she marries by saying that would make him her whore. Instead, Criston’s brilliant suggestion is to pull an “Aladdin” and head over to the other side of the world to live in poverty because at least then he’d get to be the man in charge.

This is a guy so stupidly obsessed with his station, which he owes to Rhaenyra, and so obsessed with his honor (only when it’s convenient) that he only now remembers his vow of chastity and confesses the whole affair to the queen, who didn’t know or care about it until he confessed.

No Honor Among Thieves

This is the “House of the Dragon” equivalent of Ned Stark doing the “honorable” thing and telling Cersei he knows about her incest babies and giving her the opportunity to plot a counterattack just because it’s the proper thing to do. Of course, just like Ned paid with his head, Ser Criston went and made things worse by becoming a homophobe too and killing the poor Ser Joffrey Lonmouth before almost trying to kill himself. 

To recap, Ser Criston was a nobody before Rhaenyra gave him a sweet job, then offered to allow him to continue having sex despite his chastity vow, and he decided to not only reject the idea, but to snitch to the queen, and then goes and commits a hate crime against a gay man? Say what you will about Daemon, but at least he’s not stupid enough to decline a good opportunity when it presents itself.

The competition for next summer’s greatest prize is already underway. Not for the World Cup itself, but for the media outlet that can concoct the most bats**t crazy story about Russia, as it prepares to host the world’s biggest sporting event.

Off to a commanding and possibly insurmountable lead is The Sun. The Murdoch tabloid’s extensively researched story about an ‘Army of female Russian Nazis lying in wait for England fans’ is a compelling one. Few people would fail to be baited into clicking that headline.

Few things come in armies.  It’s mainly flesh-eating zombies and Russians. The lurid tale that lies within is certainly worth your time.

The ‘evidence’ is an admittedly brutal video of groups of girls fighting in the snow. Not so much ‘lying in wait’ as beating the hell out of each other… in wait. It appears to show ‘fans’ of Russian football teams Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow scrapping in the snow.

The ‘army’ described in the headline though dissolves before your eyes as you dip into the details. By the second paragraph, the ‘army’ has shrunk to ‘hundreds.’ Not so much an army as an unruly mob, or large queue. But of those hundreds of Russians “lying in wait,” The Sun can name only one: 19-year-old Diana Ivanova, who “was involved in trouble at a match last week.”

It would be interesting to see what kind of trouble someone can get into as they “lie in wait.” She does apparently call herself a Nazi, however, and she has a tattoo written in English. That’s enough for The Sun’s headline writers to put two and two together and get 39 – 1939.

But wait, two other Russian ‘thugs’ are also named: Olga Borisova, who is apparently a Russian from Uzbekistan; and Elena Maleyeva, who is a Russian from Ukraine. So, not Russians, strictly speaking, but their names sound funny and foreign, so that’s good enough for The Sun.

Just in case fans weren’t already shaking in their replica kits ahead of the summer tournament, the details become even more shocking. A “Russian security source” (or possibly Uzbek or Ukrainian, who cares?!) reportedly said: “Recently, the authorities have cracked down on all hooligans, including women. So far, this is holding pretty well.”

Intimidating stuff. The police are forced to admit that they appear to have the situation under control.

The last line of the ‘story,’ however, is enough to strike fear into the heart of even the most battle-hardened soccer fan willing to put their life on the line by travelling to Russia for the World Cup. “Top clubs Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow arrange boxing bouts for rival women thugs to channel their aggression,” it reports.

The two young models in the picture, fully made-up with scarves viciously dangling from their necks, are clearly about to rip each other to pieces with their oversized pink boxing gloves.

Brace yourself. The media coverage of Russia over the next six or seven months is going to be something to behold.

In fact, there are so many that, why, you could even partake in that most reliable of Internet #content generation exercises: ranking them, from worst to really worst. So here we are.

10. The Force Awakens’ Rey is a “Mary Sue.”

This one was initially offered up by wildly untalented screenwriter / Twitter “personality” / nepotism beneficiary Max Landis, who could barely wait until he was out of the theater before tweeting that the seventh film’s protagonist (played, wonderfully, by Daisy Ridley) was a “Mary Sue,” the dismissive fan-fiction term for a female character who is widely beloved, does everything well, and saves the day. As with most of what Landis says, tweets, or writes, it can be dismissed with a bare minimum of effort: if Rey was a Mary Sue, then so was Luke Skywalker, and so was Harry Potter, and so was Jason Bourne, and so on.

CRYSTAL Palace supporters inadvertently vandalised their own team’s bus thinking it belonged to Middlesbrough prior to the Premier League soccer clash between the relegation rivals on Saturday.

The coach, which was parked at a hotel nearby Selhurst Park, was daubed with the club’s name ‘Crystal Palace FC’ in red, white and blue paint across the sides and rear of the vehicle, according to media reports.

The incident occurred hours before Palace secured a vital 1-0 win that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Palace, who still used the vehicle despite the damage, confirmed on Sunday that the team’s coach was vandalised and that police had been notified.

“The team bus was covered in graffiti with the words ‘Crystal Palace’ overnight on Friday ahead of the game on Saturday. Police have been informed,” a spokesman told the Sun Sport.

British media also reported that Palace’s assistant head groundsman Dean Waters had condemned the vandals and revealed their error.

“40,000 pounds worth of damage on our coach thinking it was the Boro coach. Nice one! #cpfc,” Waters tweeted, before changing his privacy settings so that the post was no longer available to the public.
