A fourth added: “#JeremyVine let them keep their HRH’s … but take away the Trade marks and ability to cash in due to Sussex Royal.., they should earn as Mr & Mrs H Windsor … rewarding bad behaviour doesn’t help – #respectthequeen.”

Other viewers thought Prince Harry should keep his title as he was born into the royal family.

But they said Meghan Markle should lose her title because “she knew what she was getting into”.

One viewer tweeted: “He will always be Prince Harry. She need not be Duchess of Sussex.”

Another added: “Whether we like it or not. He is a Prince born. Not a title given.”

Jeremy Vine continues on Channel 5 tomorrow at 9.15am.

  • Canada’s parliament on Thursday voted to strip Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship as part of the country’s crackdown of global human-rights violators.
  • Suu Kyi had been granted the symbolic citizenship in 2007 in recognition for the way she addressed the mistreatment of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, which led to some 700,000 people fleeing the country’s Rakhine state.
  • She has since fallen out of favor with the international community, due in part to her most recent public statements about two Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar. Earlier this month, Suu Kyi admitted that she could have done better Rohingya crisis could have been dealt with “better.”
  • Canada has gotten serious about holding human-rights abusers to account across the world. In August, the country called out Saudi Arabia for arresting several prominent human rights activists.

Canada’s parliament on Thursday unanimously voted to strip Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship as part of the country’s crackdown of global human-rights violators.

Suu Kyi’s symbolic citizenship was granted in 2007. The parliament’s move must now be approved by the country’s Senate.

Accused ‘Russian agent’ Butina subjected to excessive strip searches in US jail – embassy https://briefnews.eu/accused-russian-agent-butina-subjected-to-excessive-strip-searches-in-us-jail-embassy/ https://briefnews.eu/accused-russian-agent-butina-subjected-to-excessive-strip-searches-in-us-jail-embassy/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 06:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/accused-russian-agent-butina-subjected-to-excessive-strip-searches-in-us-jail-embassy/ The Russian embassy in the US has accused American authorities of subjecting jailed Russian gun activist and ‘agent’ Maria Butina to cruel and inhumane treatment, including unwarranted strip searches.

Butina was arrested and detained in Washington DC in July on espionage charges. The 29-year old is accused of acting as an agent of the Russian government without informing the US attorney general. Since her arrest, representatives of the Russian embassy have checked in on Butina, most recently visiting her on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the embassy says Butina is being subjected to “psychological pressure and humiliation” as she awaits trial.

Butina is being denied walks outdoors, and is strip searched after every visit with lawyers, embassy staff, and acquaintances. Butina is allegedly subjected to night checks every 15 minutes, a practice usually reserved for suicidal prisoners.

“There are attempts to break her will,” the embassy said, and announced that it would be sending an official complaint to the US State Department over Butina’s treatment in jail.

Butina is allegedly being denied letters in her native Russian, as her jailers think they might contain “coded messages.” Embassy staff say that she has not been provided with an interpreter.

On an earlier visit, embassy staff raised concern that Butina was being denied proper medical care. This time, the situation is apparently much the same. A painful swelling on Butina’s leg – a result of her cell’s cold temperature – has not been treated, and the jailed activist is given only painkillers.

Butina’s arrest was covered with glee by much of the American media, who published salacious stories, alleging that she traded sex for favors as she cosied up to Republican politicians. Likewise, the #FreeMariaButina social media campaign launched by the Russian Foreign Ministry was instantly hijacked with abusive and sexist comments.

“The hysteria in American social media, further flamed by Russophobic publications in the mainstream media, brings to mind the Salem Witch Trials,” read the embassy’s Facebook post.

Before falling victim to Washington’s anti-Russian crusade, Butina moved to the US on a student visa in 2016. She graduated from American University in Washington DC with a master’s degree in international relations earlier this year.

Butina is also the founder of Right to Bear Arms, a pro-gun organization that lobbies to change Russia’s strict gun laws. Right to Bear Arms has developed ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the US. In addition, Butina met and socialized with several conservative political figures.

“Maria holds up strong, her determination to prove her innocence only grows more resilient,” read the embassy’s post. Staff also announced that they will be setting up a legal defense fund for Butina.

  • Palestinian militants on the Gaza Strip launched at least 150 rockets at Israel overnight, and Israel retaliated by pounding the region with deadly airstrikes.
  • The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that mounting violence began on Wednesday after militants shot at an IDF vehicle in Gaza.
  • In response, Israel responded with tank fire, which provoked a barrage of rocket fire into Israel and further airstrikes in Gaza.
  • Three Israelis were wounded by rocket shrapnel, while three Palestinians including a 23-year-old pregnant woman and her 18-month old child were killed in airstrikes. Eight Palestinian civilians were also wounded.
  • Israel and Gaza have gone to war three times over the last decade, and both sides are working quickly toward an uneasy ceasefire to prevent another one.

UFC is planning to strip Conor McGregor of his lightweight world championship title — here’s why https://briefnews.eu/ufc-is-planning-to-strip-conor-mcgregor-of-his-lightweight-world-championship-title-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/ufc-is-planning-to-strip-conor-mcgregor-of-his-lightweight-world-championship-title-heres-why/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 11:26:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ufc-is-planning-to-strip-conor-mcgregor-of-his-lightweight-world-championship-title-heres-why/ Conor McGregorGetty Images

  • Conor McGregor does not intend to return to UFC until September.
  • UFC president Dana White says if that is correct then he will strip McGregor of the Irishman’s lightweight world championship belt.
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will fight for the title in McGregor’s absence — but McGregor would get “first crack” at his old belt “if and when” he does return to the sport.

UFC is making contingency plans for what will happen if lightweight champion Conor McGregor does not return to the sport until September.

McGregor would be stripped of his lightweight title, “the belt would move on,” and two other fighters would contend for the championship in the Irish striker’s absence, according to UFC president Dana White.

“Conor is saying he’s thinking about coming back in September and that’s almost two years — that can’t happen,” White said in a recent appearance on UFC on Fox Sports.

“It’s just not fair to everyone else,” he said. “I love Conor, respect Conor, and love everything he has done for this company [but] the belt would have to move on, absolutely.”

McGregor has not fought in UFC since a thumping victory over Eddie Alvarez in December 2016.

In that bout, McGregor knocked Alvarez down with clinical conter punches, well-timed overhand left shots, and finished the fight in the second round with a brutal four-punch combination that put Alvarez down and out.

With the win, McGregor became the first same-time double champion in UFC history. However, he has never defended the title and has fought just once in the 14 months since — a tenth round boxing rules loss to Floyd Mayweather.

While McGregor has been away from the cage, two other lightweights have emerged as viable contenders for the title — Dagestan wrestler Khabib Nurmagomedov, a 29-year-old who is undefeated in 25 cage fights, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) expert Tony Ferguson, a pupil at Eddie Bravo’s highly-respected BJJ school 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu.

For White, it is clear who will fight for the vacant lightweight belt if and when McGregor gets stripped.

“You do Khabib versus Tony,” White said. “We’re working on that fight now. If and when Conor comes back, he will get the first crack at the title.”

Cruising the Las Vegas Strip in the Smart Vision EQ concept car https://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/ https://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 16:34:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/

Introduced at the Frankfurt auto show in September, the Smart Vision EQ from Mercedes-Benz is the automaker’s EV concept that combines mobility, autonomy and connectivity. The result is a car built on the Smart Fortwo platform, can wink at pedestrians, has level-five autonomy (no steering wheel or pedals), and welcomes passengers by name. It also took me for a short ride on the Las Vegas Strip.

Mercedes says the concept vehicle isn’t made to be sold to individuals and would instead be part of an autonomous ride-sharing fleet. The way Mercedes envisions a car like this would work is that it would arrive at a location and display the name of the individual that hailed the ride on the front of the car. They would enter the vehicle, and the dash would show their name, photo and other information they shared with the car-share service.

Then the electrical vehicle would cruise autonomously around and eventually drop you at your location and bid you farewell. One interesting feature is that the car is outfitted with hand-sanitizer dispensers, so as the passenger departs, they can clean their hands after being in a car that’s been on the road all day with various people getting in and out.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My ride in the car was a bit less personalized. Mercedes did update the front display with the Las Vegas Strip, but it was set to the default demo passenger. No biggie, the point of the short drive (about 500 meters done twice) was to experience the sensation of being in a level-five car that could be the blueprint of a future Mercedes.

Even though the two passes I took in the car lasted about five minutes, and the car was controlled by a Mercedes technician via a remote, it was a good indicator of how it would feel to sit in a car you’ve hailed without a human behind the wheel. If this service were available now (and was safe), I would use it all the time. Parking in San Francisco is challenging even on the best of days, and I like the idea of a car that winks at people as it drives down the road. I’m guessing that other folks tired of traffic and spending 20 minutes looking for parking would too.

The Windmill Theatre: Britain's oldest strip club in fight for survival https://briefnews.eu/the-windmill-theatre-britains-oldest-strip-club-in-fight-for-survival/ https://briefnews.eu/the-windmill-theatre-britains-oldest-strip-club-in-fight-for-survival/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 12:21:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-windmill-theatre-britains-oldest-strip-club-in-fight-for-survival/

The Windmill Theatre was the first British theatre to feature nudity by exploiting a legal loophole

His objection: that not only were naked ladies on stage but that some of them had moved.

“This is carrying stage nudity too far,” the letter said.

“His Lordship is not prepared to allow three full-figured girls out of four posed for the benefit of the audience in this manner. Unless more reasonableness is shown in the inclusion of nudity in your programme he will have no alternative to prohibiting it altogether.”

Eight years earlier the Windmill had become the first British theatre to feature nudity by exploiting a legal loophole.

They argued as naked statues were not considered morally objectionable so a motionless “living statue” should also be acceptable.

Lord Cromer had agreed but ruled: “If you move, it’s rude.”

But by the end of the decade the theatre was pushing the boundaries.

By having their nude girls hold on to a moving object they would manage to create the impression of movement.

The Windmill dodged that bullet and went on to forge a reputation as the country’s most famous naked review bar.

Until yesterday it had operated as a lap-dancing club but a ruling by Westminster City Council now means the club may be forced to close for good.

After objections to a renewal of the Windmill’s licence by a women’s rights group, the committee ruled that there had been “serious breaches of licence conditions”. They now have 21 days in which to appeal.

And if the Lord Chamberlain was upset by the idea of a naked young lady daring to so much as move a muscle in 1940, one shudders to think what he might have made of the present allegations facing the club.

“The Windmill club needs to be shut down as a matter of urgency to stop the gropes, pinching and slaps,” stated the group.

They also claimed infringements, allegedly hiring ex-police officers to go undercover to investigate the suspected goings-on.

Their statements make for eye-opening reading. One describes how he met a “dark-haired female who was wearing a see-through dressing gown and red bra” named Summer, which culminated in her “offering me a dance in the VIP area upstairs for £150 and an additional £10 for the security to look the other way”.

The detective then details how Summer performed a fully nude private dance for him that included a lewd act, as well as encouraging him to touch her.

Another states how a girl called Michelle encouraged the detective to pay for a dance in a booth that was “not scrutinised”, as well as asking for £20 to give to a security guard “not to look”.

The description of that dance contains details too explicit to publish but which are claimed breach the rule that “there shall be no indecent conduct between the performers and customers”.

A third describes how another dancer Susanna performed a sex act on the information gathering ex-copper, as well as giving him her mobile phone number and arranging to meet him again.

Westminster strip club licensing rules forbid any physical contact, sex acts or exchanging of phone numbers, as well as stipulating that all dances should be monitored by security or CCTV.

For their part the Windmill had promised that they were cleaning up their act.

Daniel Owide, who is the owner of the club, said that while there had been “a number of operational failings” he had instigated wide-ranging changes.

He also wrote: “We have dismissed six dancers, suspended 10 dancers, sent dancers home during the night on approximately 10 occasions and issued a number of formal warnings to dancers since receiving the objections to our renewal application. Any breach of the ‘no touching rule’ results in immediate dismissal.”

Mr Owide also cited “the long historical use of the premises as an iconic adult entertainment venue in the heart of Soho”.

And it is perhaps this history that will make the closure of the Windmill so significant.

The Windmill began life as cinema The Palais de Luxe but it was only after being bought in 1930 by Laura Henderson that its fortunes changed.

She hired Vivian Van Damm as manager and together they created Revudeville, a continuous show incorporating music, singers, dancers and variety acts.

Revudeville was a hit but most popular by far were the showgirls.

And then in 1932 Henderson and Van Damm came up with the idea of using nudes as part of the show.

These living statues or “tableaux vivants” were a sensation partly because of the censors’ disapproval.

And the Windmill became so popular that it even stayed open through the Blitz, leading to its famous slogan: “We Never Closed.”

Their story was dramatised in the 2005 film Mrs Henderson Presents starring Judi Dench as Henderson and Bob Hoskins as Van Damm.

Windmill TheatreGETTY

Mrs Henderson died in 1944 leaving the theatre to Van Damm and he diversified the club’s variety roster bringing in a host of young comedians who would later enjoy enormous fame.

Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Sir Bruce Forsyth, Tommy Cooper and Barry Cryer were all early success stories.

After Van Damm’s death in 1960 the theatre struggled in the face of a new permissiveness that had seen Soho become host to dozens of rival clubs.

In 1964 it closed with the building passing through several owners over the next few decades and being used as a cinema, cabaret club and even television studio until it was leased by Oscar Owide in 1994, who, along with son Daniel, set about returning the Windmill to its spiritual roots.

But if the activities detailed in the Windmill’s licence renewal application make for shocking reading by today’s standards for those who remember the spirit of Mrs Henderson’s cheeky “tableaux vivantes”, they are doubly so – and the loss of a London landmark all the sadder.

Former Windmill girl Jill Shapiro, who wrote the book Remembering Revudeville, recalls the club’s heyday with affection.

“It was very titillating,” she said.

“Some outfits were already very revealing, often see-through and I think some of the men used to live in hope of a wardrobe malfunction.

“They just sat in awe, chins on the ground and a glazed look in their eye. We used to do six shows a day and some men would sit there all day and all night.

“It wasn’t a sleazy place. We were rooted in a much nicer time. We were naughty but nice. The Windmill was an oasis of innocence at Soho’s heart.”

The Israeli military have “successfully intercepted” two rockets targeting Israel, its defense forces have announced, claiming that the attack was launched from the Gaza Strip.

The rockets were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force, an IDF spokesperson said on Twitter. Media reports said warning sirens went off in several regions in southern Israel close to the Gaza Strip.

Attacks on the city of Sderot, as well as on the Sha’ar HaNegev, Sdot Negev and Hof Ashkelon regional councils have been reportedly prevented.

On Tuesday, Israel said its Air Force targeted a Hamas military compound in the southern Gaza Strip, in response to another alleged rocket attack from that area.

More than 10 missiles have been reportedly fired at Israel in the past few days, since tensions escalated in the area following Washington’s decision to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Twitter warns it may strip users of their ‘verified’ status as it rethinks who deserves the blue badge (TWTR) https://briefnews.eu/twitter-warns-it-may-strip-users-of-their-verified-status-as-it-rethinks-who-deserves-the-blue-badge-twtr/ https://briefnews.eu/twitter-warns-it-may-strip-users-of-their-verified-status-as-it-rethinks-who-deserves-the-blue-badge-twtr/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 09:05:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitter-warns-it-may-strip-users-of-their-verified-status-as-it-rethinks-who-deserves-the-blue-badge-twtr/ Jack DorseyGetty

  • Twitter is reviewing all of its verified accounts and plans to remove verification from accounts that don’t adhere to its new rules.
  • Verified badges won’t be given to any accounts until Twitter completely revamps its verification program.
  • The company was met with backlash recently for verifying the organizer of August’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Twitter said Wednesday that it was conducting a wide-sweeping review of its verified accounts with the goal of removing verification from accounts that don’t adhere to its new policies.

The move follows recent backlash Twitter received for awarding its coveted blue “verified” badge to the organizer of August’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Twitter stopped verifying accounts altogether in response to the outcry.

“Verification has long been perceived as an endorsement,” Twitter said in a series of tweets on Wednesday. “This perception became worse when we opened up verification for public submissions and verified people who we in no way endorse.”

Twitter’s newly-updated guidelines for verified accounts say the company “reserves the right to remove verification at any time without notice,” and that removal could occur for actions like “misleading people” with fake names, promoting hate speech or violence, and harassing others.

Twitter started notifying users of their verification removal via email on Wednesday. One of the first accounts to lose its blue checkmark was Laura Loomer’s, the far-right activist whom Uber and Lyft recently banned following her complaints about Muslim drivers.

Translation: I’m a conservative. pic.twitter.com/F1AsxWI6Fm

Other accounts that appeared to have lost their checkmarks on Wednesday included known white nationalist Richard Spencer and the organizer of Charlottesville’s white supremacist rally, Jason Kessler.

By clamping down on verified accounts, Twitter is attempting to stymie the mounting criticism it’s historically faced for not effectively combating abuse and hate speech on its network.

Twitter said that its verification program would remain paused until it revamps the criteria and system it uses to verify accounts.
