“You’re spreading hope through dance,” Oti signed off before Strictly judge Shirley Ballas weigh in with some more thankful words.
“Hi Sheila,” Shirley said, bringing an excited response from the One Show guest.
Shirley then said: “May I personally, from one dance teacher to another dance teacher, thank you, Sheila, for everything you’ve done.”

The soap star’s chances of winning currently stand at 2/1, with The Wanted singer Max George, 32, her hottest competition at 5/1.
“We think that Maisie is the one to beat on the dance floor this year and price her up as the hot favourite to win Strictly 2020,” Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said.
On the other end of the spectrum, comedian Bill Bailey, 55, and former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, 57, are at 50/1 to win.
“We think that Bill and Jacqui are going to be battling it out to avoid being the first celebrity of the series to be eliminated, and their odds of winning are very long indeed,” Aitkenhead added.

Bookmaker Coral speculated that the former Girls Aloud bandmate would take the reins after her popularity on BBC’s The Greatest Dancer talent show.
They slashed the odds in half, with Coral’s John Hill saying: “With doubts over Bruno Tonioli’s availability this year, we have slashed the odds on Cheryl being a judge on Strictly in 2020.
“Cheryl has been linked with being a contestant on Strictly for a while and they may just get their target this year, but in the judges’ chair, rather than the dance floor.”
Cheryl currently has odds of 2/1 in the bookies’ eyes, but would she want to take it on?

But don’t for one minute assume the most popular – and enduring – professional on Strictly Come Dancing isn’t a man without strong opinions. Take the so-called Strictly Curse. Does he ignore all that? “Personally, yes,” he says, “as I have no interest in any of it.” And yet, it’s not too hard to understand that, if a red-blooded male is wrapped around a good-looking female eight hours a day, six days a week, temptation might strike.
Related articles
“Not to me. I’m already married to a good-looking female [businesswoman Hannah Summer]. I have two gorgeous children at home. Why would I want to cop off with someone else?” That doesn’t mean, though, that Anton doesn’t find the Strictly Curse rather an irritant.
“I have two attitudes to it. One is that we’re all adults; we make our own choices. The other is that the public and Press tend to concentrate on whatever is perceived to be the latest scandal. I find that annoying.
“Could we talk about the dancing, please? A drunken snog outside a pub isn’t really what Strictly’s meant to be about. You don’t want any of that to be what people remember about a show that I think is the best thing ever.”
That said, lovely stories can come out of the show, says Anton. “Look at Gorka and Gemma who fell in love and now have a beautiful little girl. And what about Pasha and Rachel who’re expecting their first child just before Christmas? “So it’s not all bad.”
He’s been partnered by everyone from politician and Daily Express columnist Ann Widdecombe to reality star Nancy Dell’Olio, from model Jerry Hall to fashion guru Susannah Constantine. And Anton retains an affection for them all.
“Can you remember who came third in Strictly the year before last, or the year before that? Of course not. But I bet you can remember Ann Widdecombe being dragged across the floor in a bright yellow dress or Nancy Dell’Olio climbing out of a coffin in the Halloween edition.”
Anton Du Beke and this year’s partner Emma Barton (Image: BBC/Guy Levy)
Anton’s point is these people – comedy partners to all intents and purposes – helped create memorable TV moments. That said, you did not have to be a mind reader to know what Anton was thinking when host Tess Daly announced his partner this year would be Emma Barton, 42, most famous for playing Honey Mitchell in BBC soap EastEnders.
Even now, he can’t keep the silly smile off his face. “She’s got legs that go on for ever. She was trained in musical theatre. And she can really act which means she’ll know how to tell a story.”
Little wonder that Anton turned to camera and said out loud that he now knew what he’d be doing all the way up to Christmas (rather than getting voted off early).
“I didn’t want to seem disrespectful to anyone I’d danced with before. But I am so excited, I can’t tell you.”
The other newcomer on the hit show is judge Motsi Mabuse, 38, pro-dancer Oti’s big sister, and the replacement for Darcey Bussell.
“They should never have got rid of Arlene Phillips,” says Anton, pointedly. “I’m such an admirer of hers. But I suppose they couldn’t ask her back. Anyway, Motsi is a terrific addition. She has the great advantage of having been a judge on the German version of Strictly.
“Remember when Darcey first started and kept saying ‘Yah’ at the end of every sentence? She quite quickly became brilliant, though.
Related articles
“And Shirley [Ballas] didn’t seem to know at the beginning whether to be critical or technical or what but she, too, rapidly found her feet.
“Not Motsi. She hit the ground running. And she knows what she’s talking about. I don’t want an ex-contestant on the panel; all they can offer is observations along the lines that they know how the celebrity feels because they were in the same position.
“Unless you’ve been a professional dancer, there’s no place for you on a judging panel.”
He doesn’t name her but Strictly winner-turned-judge Alesha Dixon fits that description.
There has been speculation that this might be Craig Revel Horwood’s last year on the panel.
“Yes, he made an unfortunate comment on the launch show about the celebrities doing well if they got up close and personal with their pro-partners. But I honestly don’t think the show would improve from his departure.
“He has so much experience. Strictly works better with Craig.”
Anton with wife Hannah Summers (Image: David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images for Annesley Abercorn – The Dream Ball)
That said, Anton would be a popular choice to replace him if it ever came to it.
“I’d rather dance on the show,” he says, “than judge for the time being. But I do know that, if they ever offered me the chance of being a judge and I turned it down, they wouldn’t offer again.”
And should that call never come, canny Anton has a second string to his bow. His first romantic novel, One Enchanted Evening, was the fourth best-selling debut title of 2018. And, as he can’t resist boasting: “It only came out in October.” He didn’t exactly have the complete story sitting and waiting for the follow-up, Moonlight Over Mayfair but, when he was writing the first novel, his publisher suggested that certain ideas could be held over for a second.
It carries on seamlessly from where the first left off. During his research, Anton stumbled across a real-life incident which fired his imagination.
The star is reluctant to go into too much detail but there was a pre-war assassination plot on King Edward VIII’s life. “That planted the seed of an idea. I was off and running.”
However Anton’s considerable energies are focused on Strictly, which he joined for the very first series in 2004. He still has a personal trainer, takes regular in theatre’ dancing classes and recently began both tap dancing and gymnastic classes. Anton is six feet tall and weighs 12 stone.
“My waistband hasn’t changed in over 35 years; it’s been 28 inches since I became an adult.”
He inherited a good body, he says, from his Spanish mother, Conchita. “I’ve never had any back problems or creaky knees. I’ve always competed, always stayed in good shape.
“It’s common sense. My attitude is, if it’s too heavy, put it down.”
Does that include Ann Widdecombe? He roars with laughter. “I think the trick was not to hold on to her for too long.”
He’s 53 now and doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink.
“I tried a glass of wine once but musical didn’t like the taste. I’ve never touched it since. And I have a healthy diet. It’s been second nature all my adult life.”
Anton’s currently competing in his 17th Strictly. “I love being the last man standing.”
And this year, with Emma at his side, he’s hoping to be standing for longer than ever before.

In a revealing interview on BBC Radio 4’s Christmas episode of Desert Island Discs – set to air later today – the dancer and choreographer’s voice cracked and he was forced to pause mid-show.
The 62-year-old remembered the death of his mother and close friends back in the 1990s as he dedicated Rod Stewart’s version of In My Life to them.
Bruno also broke his silence on missing an episode of Strictly for the first time ever, admitting the BBC show is taking a toll on his health.
“This song is dedicated to all the people that have passed away,” the Italian started. “In spite of what has happened in my life, I might have moved away – hopefully I will keep moving – but they are still part of me, they are still… I’m getting emotional.”
Bruno told host Kirsty Young about the significant moments in his life – from his distant relationship with his mechanic and ballroom dancer father, his first break in theatre with a touring Parisian company, working for stars such as Bananarama and the sudden death of his mum 23 years ago.
The star also confessed that filming Strictly Come Dancing at the same time as Dancing With The Stars in the US, was what forced him to skip a weekend instalment.
Dismissing rumours that the absence was connected to his love life, Bruno stated: “It was part of my contract because, physically, it’s going to kill me. This year I had no gaps… it was a total overlap all the way through.
“I said, ‘You have to give me a week off because I don’t have time for my body to re-energise,’ and it was agreed. I didn’t just say I didn’t want to do it. I would never do that, I’m a pro.”
Meanwhile, Bruno added – for the first time – how he had avoided military service by proving his sexuality to the Italian armed forces.
“I had a wonderful fur coat at the time and all these press clippings from the show. I was very meek and just went along as I am, with this coat and clippings, for the appointment with the top guy,” he stated.
Desert Island Discs will air today on Radio 4 at 11.15am.

You may not recognise his face but if you are a fan of a certain celebrity dance show then you will most certainly recognise his voice.
As one of the lead singers in Strictly Come Dancing’s resident band, Tommy Blaize’s velvet vocals have entertained more than 10 million people every Saturday and Sunday night for the past 14 years.
Having been a part of the furniture from the very first series he has provided vocal accompaniment to some of the show’s most famous moments from Caroline Flack’s winning Charleston to Ed Balls doing Gangnam Style.
But now Tommy is stepping into the spotlight with the release of his debut solo album Life & Soul.
The 14-track album features some of his favourite songs from Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World to Lionel Richie’s Three Times A Lady.

“I haven’t strayed too far from the originals as they are classics for a reason,” says Tommy, 54.
While Strictly is what he has become known for, Tommy had a highly successful career before stepping into the beloved ballroom.
In the early 1970s Liverpool-based talent scout Hilda Fallon, who also helped launch the careers of Ken Dodd, Jimmy Tarbuck and Freddie Starr, ran a dance school and saw the potential in Tommy and his siblings from a young age, turning them into The Blaze brothers – a tribute act to The Drifters and The Jackson 5.
“I was only nine years old and that same year, 1972, I played my first show,” says Tommy, who is from Toxteth, Liverpool.
“If you can play in front of a North-west audience in the 1970s and 1980s you can play anywhere.”

After attending music college he spent a few years doing summer seasons in nightclubs across Spain, an experience that prepared him for the Strictly schedule.
“I did four sets a night, seven nights a week until 4am,” says Tommy.
“It was one of the most relentless gigs I’ve ever done but my vocal muscles became incredibly strong as a result.”
He went on to perform with everyone from Diana Ross to Queen, toured with Robbie Williams and even played at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party in Hyde Park.
“Robbie Williams is great fun,” says Tommy.

“I toured with him during the 2014 World Cup and we are both football mad. He would hire out the hotel bar and invite all 118 crew members to watch the match with him. Sometimes he wouldn’t go on stage until the football had finished.”
But it was in 2004 that Strictly Come Dancing waltzed into his life. Tommy received a call from a producer saying they were looking for musicians for a new BBC Come Dancing-style show.
Tommy knew it was a hit from the moment the pilot episode aired.
“We pre-recorded the launch show and when it finally aired I was taking my dog for a walk. As I strolled past house after house, every single TV had Strictly on. You could see people gathering around, getting ready for the show and quite a few were throwing a Strictly party.
“Some people were barbecuing, little kids were wearing their party dresses. That’s the moment I realised it was going to be massive.”
But it isn’t all glitterball trophies and foxtrots. The show’s schedule is relentless and with 7.30am starts weekend lie-ins have become a thing of the past.
Tommy’s preparation for each show starts on a Monday night.
“Usually the song dictates the singer in the band because we all have different styles. We then learn all the vocals at home individually and start rehearsing together on a Friday. Then we come into the studio early Saturday morning and run through everything until it is perfect.
“The first time the dancers rehearse to live music is on Saturday morning. There is a lot of pressure to get it right because you don’t want to be the reason the dancers mess up. Then it is showtime. Things get incredibly busy backstage so every episode flies by.”
During Strictly season Tommy seeks respite in a pub near Elstree Studios where the show is filmed.

“I have a quick pint to wind down and then head home,” says Tommy.
One of his favourite performances to date is Billy Joel’s She’s Always A Woman, which he sang for Debbie McGee a few weeks ago.
“It was one of those moments when the dancing Daily Express Saturday December 9 2017 29 and music synced-up beautifully,” he says.
How about a favourite contestant? “I met Debbie years ago when her late husband Paul Daniels did the show and we became friends then. When it was announced that she was part of this season’s line-up none of us expected her to be as brilliant as she is.”
With talk of this season’s new contestants the conversation inevitably turns to the famous faces who are now no longer part of the show.

Tommy Blaize alongside former Strictly favourite Len Goodman
Head judge Len Goodman left the show last season after 14 years on the panel and was replaced by ballroom dancer Shirley Ballas. “I miss Len so much,” says Tommy.
“He has moved on to pastures new but we will get to see him in January because he is still doing the Strictly tour, which everyone is really looking forward to.
“Len is a one-off. He brought a balance to the panel. I loved it when he would tell off the other judges for being too harsh and I loved the jokey nature of his relationship with Bruno Tonioli. He was always having to avoid Bruno’s flailing arms.
“But Shirley is doing a fantastic job. It’s great to have a fellow Scouser on board. It was a tough seat to fill but her dance history speaks for itself. She’s the champion of champions. She’s very much like Darcey Bussell in that the advice she gives is always positive.”
Tommy says the show has plans to pay tribute to another Strictly legend: veteran entertainer and presenter Sir Bruce Forsyth who died this year aged 89 after a long battle with ill health.
“Losing Bruce was very sad,” says Tommy.
“I miss him like mad.” Tommy was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with Sir Bruce as the pair recorded the Strictly Come Dancing album together back in 2004.
“I went to his house a few times to plan the album and he was so welcoming and encouraging,” says Tommy, who lives in west London.
“He was just as you saw him on TV. He was an absolute gentleman.” One side of Sir Bruce that fans might not be aware of was his superstitious nature.
“He was incredibly superstitious,” says Tommy.

“If anyone walked past his dressing room while whistling he’d drag you in and make you do three spins and walk out backwards.”
This superstition dates back to the old days of theatre when backstage crews were made up of off-duty sailers who, just like they did at sea, would communicate with each other through a series of coded whistles to lift or lower heavy props.
A whistling actor could inadvertently prompt them to lower something they shouldn’t and injure a cast member.
“I was always whistling so was forever being dragged into his dressing room,” adds Tommy, who says his favourite time with Sir Bruce was attending his 80th birthday party.
“He sat me at the same table as Sammy Davis Jr, which made me feel so proud because Sammy was his idol. He loved him so much so to be sat at his table was an honour.

Life & Soul by Tommy Blaize is on sale now
“We have a big tribute to Bruce coming up in February but I can’t say any more.”
Tommy says the crew are like one big happy family backstage but they rarely have time to mingle.
“The best time to get to know everyone is when we go on our six-week tour. We live in each other’s pockets then.”
But once the Strictly circus leaves town after the tour Tommy gets to spend time with his own family: partner Terrie and children Kai, 16, and Kalina, 24.
“It’s hard being away from them,” admits Tommy.
“But I can’t complain because I really do have the best job in the world.”

Anastacia is back on top after a string of health challenges
When pop singer and former Strictly Come Dancing star Anastacia was recovering from major surgery after undergoing a double mastectomy four years ago, her worry was never whether she would ever be able to perform on stage again – but when.
It is this fearless, dogged determination that helped her to achieve international success in the music industry – despite being diagnosed with the incurable and often debilitating inflammatory bowel condition Crohn’s disease at the age of 13 – and beat breast cancer not once, but twice.
Related articles
True to form, the gutsy singer, 48, who has performed with Sir Elton John, Celine Dion and Sir Paul McCartney, has made an incredible recovery from several radical operations following her second cancer diagnosis in 2013.
Now Anastacia, who has sold more than 30 million records, is about to embark on her first major UK tour in more than 10 years. However she is the first to admit the last few years haven’t been an easy ride. “I always knew I’d have a double mastectomy if the cancer came back but the journey was far bigger and greater than I thought.
“I didn’t have a typical mastectomy so the surgeries and recovery time, which took two years, were very difficult. “I had four surgeries and the fi rst one was the most major and I think even I wasn’t fully prepared for that.
The surgeons normally cut on the bra line but because I have tattoos, which meant my skin was already compromised, they had to go deeper into my back.” For her breast reconstruction surgeons took lateral muscles from her back to place over the implants to give a more natural appearance.
Not only did the surgery mean excruciating pain, it also affected everything from her posture to her arm movements. “I had been extremely strong, more on a gymnast level. But after that I had no core. It’s been a long process to build my strength back.”

The singer has made an incredible recovery from several radical operations
Anastacia’s first cancer diagnosis in 2003 came after a routine mammogram in preparation for breast reduction surgery and was treated with intense radiotherapy. While the initial diagnosis was a shock, she says it wasn’t the second time around. “It had always been at the back of my mind,” she admits. “Two years after my fi rst cancer I had another scare and I was absolutely terrified.
It turned out fine but that was when I started researching mastectomy. “I knew I had been lucky that time but I had no guarantee that the cancer wouldn’t return and it would be caught in time. It was a reality check for me.” So when the cancer did return in 2013 the decision to have a double mastectomy was a straightforward one. She says: “I’d had a good eight years of understanding what it was and was prepared.
“The day after my first surgery I thought, ‘I’m done with breast cancer’. It may have been two years of recovery but I could see the end of the tunnel.” Anastacia was a contestant in the last series of Strictly Come Dancing where she was paired with Brendan Cole and bravely insisted she would not make any effort to hide her mastectomy scars.
She became the fi rst ever contestant to pull out of a dance-off after ripping scar tissue during an energetic dance routine. Yet despite this the singer believes the show played an important role in her recovery. “Strictly was an amazing time and I’m still bummed that I got hurt. I was really up for the challenge.
Mon, October 3, 2016
Singer Anastacia in pictures.

I have not kept up the dancing but I would say that when I’m on stage now I do feel more of a connection to my body which I hadn’t since my surgery. “Strictly helped me understand this new body that I’m in because I have to use it differently since it doesn’t move in the same way it used to.
It’s hard to hold my abs in for instance because I don’t have the core of my back muscles. So I’m very grateful for the experience I got from the show.”
The star’s last operation was in January last year and she also used it as an opportunity to correct her heart condition, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) which she was diagnosed with 10 years ago. SVT is an abnormally fast heart rate of over 100 beats a minute. Although not usually lifethreatening, it can cause chest pain and breathlessness.
Now, unsurprisingly, Anastacia is fastidious about her diet and health. “I don’t drink at all now because since the second cancer I want to be as healthy as possible. I was concerned about how my meat and chicken was produced so I’m now a pescatarian but I’m going to give up fi sh soon because we can’t control the bacteria and pesticides in our waters.
“I also don’t eat gluten because it affects my Crohn’s. It’s not always easy to avoid eating gluten but it’s easier than having to manage the pain afterwards.” While she admits she used Botox to hold back the effects of getting older, Anastacia is fully at ease with turning 50 in September next year. “I’m relaxed about it. Right now I have nothing in my face at all although I haven’t ruled out a mini-Botox session to sort out my crevices,” she laughs.
Currently single, one thing Anastacia has ruled out is having children after previously saying she would consider adopting if she did not conceive naturally. “I started to realise what is the important thing in my life and the one thing in my life that is important to me and I can’t live without is my career.
“I realised that maybe I’ve never had a child because I didn’t want to compromise. If I can write songs to change people’s lives then I’m happy with that. I feel a mother of some sort because I’m helping people through my music.”
With a new tour and album out later this year, Anastacia is hoping her biggest health challenges are fi mly behind her. “I do the best I can with a positive outlook. “You never know what is going to happen but I’m always on the bright side of whatever is dealt to me. After everything that has happened to me I see life as a gift.”
