Stretching the upper back muscles, along with a healthy diet can help alleviate pain while improving endurance.

Did you know that stretching your upper back builds endurance for sports, your job – which may require heavy lifting – and simple, everyday activities? Many people who exercise don’t recognize the importance of having a strong upper back, and often neglect this part of the body, focusing more on the lower back where injuries are more prone to occur.

Upper back endurance is necessary for runners, hikers, golfers, tennis players, bowlers, cyclists; the list goes on and on. If saving time is important to you, you want to reduce chronic back pain, boost your energy levels, or you simply need ways to get through a day at the office while confined to a computer, you’ll begin to understand why the following upper back stretches and exercises are necessary.

Here are seven stretches, combined with exercises, to help you maintain a strong upper back:

1. Lat Pull-Downs

By contracting and lengthening your latissimus dorsi muscles, trapezius, deltoids, rhomboids, teres major, along with the other muscles groups in and around your upper back, you are building muscle endurance and increasing mobility.

Seated at a lat pull-down machine, select a weight stack that is comfortable. Remember, you’re not preparing for a bodybuilding competition, you just want to exercise the back, so heavy weight is unnecessary.

Grab the wide bar above your head, palms down, and using a wide grip, pull the bar down to your chest and contract your upper back muscles.

Keep your head up, looking at the bar. This also helps keep your spine straight and provides a clearance so that the bar doesn’t hit your face. Slowly return the bar to the top and repeat for 15 reps. Do three to four sets.

Here’s the correct technique by Denice Moberg:

2. Indoor Rowing

If upright exercises like walking on the treadmill or running outdoors bore you, you can strengthen your core using a rowing machine. Not only will you chisel your back, but the elongation of the upper back during the stroke motion creates a good stretch.

First, select a tension that is challenging but not a struggle. Make sure that your feet are securely placed in the machine’s foot straps, nice and tight to prevent the feet from moving while rowing.

Next, slide yourself in the rowing saddle forward toward the row bar and pull the bar toward the mid-section of your trunk area, which is the finish. Pulling the bar, bring your elbows beyond your back while contracting your upper muscles and rear shoulders.

Your back should be straight with a slight angle of around 100 degrees. Do not hunch.

During the catch, your legs should be at a 90 degree angle while locking out your arms completely. As a stretching exercise, repeat this motion for five minutes.

Here’s how you can do it:

3. Side Plank Rotation

If you’re short on time, floor exercises such as planks strengthen your core and can be done at home or during your lunch break at work. They can be done in 30 to 60 second increments.

There are a few plank variations:

The low-position forearm plank in which your body weight is supported by your elbows; the straight-arm plank, which is a high-position plank; side plank in which your body is turned to one side and supported by one straightened arm; the stability-ball plank which is more challenging for your trunk; and the plank that gives you a good stretch is the side plank rotation.

To begin the side plank rotation, begin in the high plank position. Slowly turn your body to one side while stacking one foot on top of the other. Extend the opposite arm toward the ceiling and as you lower your arm, reaching underneath your body and rotating your trunk.

Done properly, you will feel the stretch along your rhomboids and shoulders. Repeat the rotation – reaching and tucking – 10 times. Switch sides.

Here’s a Side Plank Rotation demonstrated by Train Aggressive:

4. Yoga Stretches

A good way to incorporate breathing with stretching and gain flexibility in your core is Kundalini yoga – an intense yoga practice – gets your blood flowing and works wonders for the spine and posture.

The “Cat-Cow” pose is a great upper back warm-up, and when combined with the “Breath Of Fire”((Yogapedia: Breath of Fire)) or “fast breathing,” energy is sent through the entire body which stimulates the flow of cell activity and increases lung capacity.

On all fours, arms straight and directly below your shoulders, and knees directly below your hips, hunch your back, inhaling as you tuck your head into your chest, then exhale while arching your back and raise your head toward to sky.

The rapid inhaling and exhaling in this exercise is known as the “Breath Of Fire,” as mentioned above. Increase the pace of both the “Cat-Cow” and “Breath Of Fire” and repeat this movement for up to five minutes.

This is how to do a Cat-Cow pose for energy:

5. Side Bends

This is a simple stretch to elongate the space between your ribs and increase range of motion, which helps achieve flexibility in the abdominals, spine, and lateral core.

Seated or standing with your back straight, raise your arms above your head and firmly hold your wrist. Gently pull your trunk to one side and hold for 20 to 30 seconds. When finished, repeat on opposite side.

Note: If standing, keep your feet shoulder width apart, if seated keep your feet flat on the floor.

Let’s take a look at how to do a standing side bend:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TSmAsa8FPc

6. Pole Stretch

By creating opposing force and pulling on a stationary object, you are stretching your lats. The upper sides of your back. Here, you are performing a static stretch which is a stretch held beyond its normal range.

Find a pole, mounted gym apparatus, or other floor-affixed object and, while standing, pull on the object with slightly bent knees and back flat at a 45-degree angle.

Continue to pull while extending your arms, feeling the stretch in your lats and rhomboid muscles. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat if needed.

7. Shoulder Blade Stretch

The shoulder blades are connected to the rhomboid muscles in the upper back. Sudden, quick movements like pulling a heavy object or even tossing a near-weightless object overhead, like a tennis ball during a serve, can strain the unstretched muscles between your shoulder blades, causing spasms.

Here’s how to avoid muscle strain:

Standing tall with feet shoulder width apart, gently pull your elbow across your chest, just beneath your chin, and hold for 15 seconds. If you do not feel immediate relief, try lowering or raising the elbow and perform the stretch again. Different angles can make a big difference.

There you have it – Seven upper back stretches and exercises to reduce pain and improve endurance. But while upper back stretches are important, a diet rich in antioxidants is equally key.

Bonus Tip: Getting a Diet Rich in Antioxidants

Antioxidants, also known as “Super Foods,” prevent the build up of free radicals in your body and control oxidative stress. These free radicals are toxins that get in the way of endurance, flexibility, and cause inflammation, among other fitness obstacles.

How do you incorporate antioxidants into your diet? Here are some common foods and beverages rich in antioxidants:

A good combination of quick and easy targeted cardiovascular exercises, static stretches, range-of-motion stretches, and yoga poses can increase upper back endurance and boost your energy levels, making your activities – both sedentary and active – manageable and fun.

Once you begin to incorporate these methods of relief into your routine, you will begin to walk taller, run farther, and hike longer!

‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Stretches Her Dramatic Chops in True-Life Forgery Drama https://briefnews.eu/can-you-ever-forgive-me-trailer-melissa-mccarthy-stretches-her-dramatic-chops-in-true-life-forgery-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/can-you-ever-forgive-me-trailer-melissa-mccarthy-stretches-her-dramatic-chops-in-true-life-forgery-drama/#respond Wed, 21 Mar 2018 04:43:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-you-ever-forgive-me-trailer-melissa-mccarthy-stretches-her-dramatic-chops-in-true-life-forgery-drama/ can you ever forgive me trailer

Melissa McCarthy rocketed to fame as the crass and loud-mouthed Megan in 2011’s Bridesmaids, and since then, the actress has perfected her brand of broad comedy to the tune of an $ 18 million paycheck in 2017. She was the fourth highest-paid actress last year according to Forbes. So why change up the formula?

For the art and possibly, the Oscar. McCarthy makes her foray into serious dramatic acting with Can You Ever Forgive Me?, an biographical comedy-drama about Lee Israel, a former author who ran a notorious literary forging scheme. And it may be early to call an Oscar buzz, but McCarthy gives an impressive and surprising performance in the first Can You Ever Forgive Me trailer

Can You Ever Forgive Me Trailer

Based on Lee Israel’s memoir of the same name, Can You Ever Forgive Me? follows the washed-out author as she becomes rich off her forgeries. Until the FBI comes knocking.

The first few minutes are nothing we haven’t seen before from McCarthy: an irreverent tone, a mousy wig, a character with a timid personality. But the story takes on a darkly comic twist as McCarthy’s Lee Israel begins forging letters from dead authors and celebrities to make a living. She’s joined by a delightful Richard E. Grant as Lee’s friend, who gleefully joins in on the forgery scheme.

Judging by the trauler, Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a comedy-drama in line with I, Tonya — and potentially has an Oscar-worthy performance from McCarthy in line with Margot Robbie’s performance as well. I can’t assume too much without seeing the movie, but I’m impressed by what McCarthy does in the two-minute trailer.

Marielle Heller directs the film written by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty. Can You Ever Forgive Me? also stars Jane Curtin, Dolly Wells, Anna Deavere Smith, and Jennifer Westfeldt.

Here is the official synopsis for Can You Ever Forgive Me?:

Melissa McCarthy stars in the adaptation of the memoir CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?, the true story of best-selling celebrity biographer (and friend to cats) Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) who made her living in the 1970’s and 80’s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant).

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is set to hit theaters on October 19, 2018.

When it comes to stretching, there are a lot of options to choose from.

But what are the best everyday stretches for anyone looking to avoid sore muscles, get more flexible, and protect his or her muscles from injuries?

We turned to Marilyn Moffat, a professor of physical therapy at New York University and author of “Age Defying Fitness,” to go over some of the best basic stretches for everyone.

Remember: Don’t do these stretches if they make you uncomfortable or if you have existing muscle problems. Instead, consult a physical therapist.

First things first: Get seated with good posture. Having that will help you do these stretches correctly.

Samantha Lee/Business Insider

Start with some neck rotations. Be sure to hold each side for 30 to 60 seconds. This applies to all stretches.

Samantha Lee/Business Insider

For the neck tilt, be sure to pull your left arm down toward the floor, either holding onto the chair or just pulling down.

Max Verstappen wins Malaysian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton stretches championship lead https://briefnews.eu/max-verstappen-wins-malaysian-grand-prix-as-lewis-hamilton-stretches-championship-lead/ https://briefnews.eu/max-verstappen-wins-malaysian-grand-prix-as-lewis-hamilton-stretches-championship-lead/#respond Sun, 01 Oct 2017 20:53:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/max-verstappen-wins-malaysian-grand-prix-as-lewis-hamilton-stretches-championship-lead/

The Dutchman had expected to need rain to take victory but Kimi Raikkonen’s engine failure before the race even started gave him the chance to attack pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen, who turned 20 on Saturday, dived down the inside of Turn 1 on Lap 4 to get past Hamilton and never gave up the lead.

The Brit meanwhile quickly became more concerned with title rival Sebastian Vettel, who had started last because of engine problems on Saturday which did not allow him to set a time.

The German, who had comfortably the fastest car on race day, sliced through the field methodically to minimise the damage of Saturday’s disaster.

But despite Mercedes’ struggles for race pace, Vettel could not quite get back on level terms with Hamilton, allowing him to open up a 34-point lead in the title race.

Verstappen has endured an “annus horribilis” at Red Bull, with seven retirements and only one podium finish before Malaysia.

And he admitted beforehand that in dry conditions, he did not expect to be challenging at the front of the race.

Raikkonen in the Ferrari, starting second, should have been the major threat but he was pushed off the grid just minutes before the race start with a turbo problem that left him unable even to start the race.

It gave Verstappen a clear run down to Turn 1 and he got ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo despite the Australian veering across the track to cover off the move.

The 20-year-old quickly had Hamilton in his sights as Mercedes’ fears about their lack of race pace came to fruition.

Verstappen needed just three laps and one corner to get past the Brit, who later admitted he hadn’t fought too hard for the position, knowing that finishing ahead of Vettel was more important.

Much further back, Vettel wasn’t exactly tearing through the field, but he did make steady progress. The German was even looking at catching Hamilton himself for a brief period but instead he had to settle for fourth place after Ferrari made him back off due to an overheating engine behind Ricciardo.

Adding injury to the insult of allowing Hamilton to take a 34-point lead, Vettel finished the afternoon on three wheels after colliding with Lance Stroll on the slowdown lap.

Statues of discord: The toppling of monuments stretches far beyond anti-Confederate struggle https://briefnews.eu/statues-of-discord-the-toppling-of-monuments-stretches-far-beyond-anti-confederate-struggle/ https://briefnews.eu/statues-of-discord-the-toppling-of-monuments-stretches-far-beyond-anti-confederate-struggle/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 19:17:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/statues-of-discord-the-toppling-of-monuments-stretches-far-beyond-anti-confederate-struggle/

America’s struggle with symbols of its slavery past was highlighted amid clashes over a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Dealing with controversial pieces of historical art has a long, sometimes bloody, and occasionally amusing history.

Toppling monuments is a tradition honored by centuries, even millennia. It has often been connected to cultural or religious strife, like the infamous 2001 destruction of Buddha statues in the Bamyan valley of Afghanistan by the Taliban, or acts of vandalism by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Palmyra, Syria and other places.

But more often, monuments of the past were targeted for being images of a disfavored ruler or a fallen government. Pharaoh Thutmose III tried to undermine the legacy of his predecessor, Hatshepsut, sometimes simply by erasing her name from her figures.

Sometimes, statues of rulers were not only destroyed but actually remade to suit the new regime. In 1792, in the days of the French Revolution, an almost two-century-old monument to Henry IV on the Pont Neuf was destroyed, and its metal used to cast cannons. In 1818, after the restoration of the monarchy, it was recreated, partially with bronze taken from a statue of Napoleon, which had been on the top of the Vendôme Column. It remains a landmark of Paris to this day.

The United States has had its own share of monument-toppling from the beginning of its existence. Just five days after the Declaration of Independence was ratified in 1776, a gilded lead statue of Britain’s King George III was taken down in Manhattan and used to make musket balls.

With the advent of the mass media, the removal of a statue can often be transformed into a powerful symbol of change, or attempted change, as was the case with the toppling of a statue of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in the 1956 uprising in Hungary. The rioters, however, failed to tear down the entire 8-meter-high bronze statue, and Stalin’s jackboots remained on the pedestal until after the uprising was quashed. A copy of the piece is now part of Budapest’s Memento Park, dedicated to Hungary’s socialist past.

Possibly the first time that the way the toppling of a monument was covered on the news became more important than the act itself – in 2003 during the US invasion of Iraq. The destruction of Saddam Hussein’s statue at Firdos Square was broadcast live and trumpeted by Washington as proof that the Iraqis were overwhelmingly welcoming the intervention. Then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld compared it to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The reality on the ground was slightly different, according to Peter Maass, who was one of dozens of Western journalists who witnessed the statue’s demise. He says the event was subtly instigated by US troops, while Iraqis in the square were few in number and probably less enthusiastic than news reports at the time led people to believe. Perhaps given the media spin over the toppling of the statue, it serves as a fitting symbol of the war.

America’s debate over Confederate monuments and their role as rally points for white supremacists, while nothing new in itself, sprang into the spotlight after the violence in Charlottesville last weekend. The tragic incident has become a key event in America this year, symbolic of a larger division in America.

Amplified by social media, the message for some has become: are you with us, or with Trump and all the bigots, racists, and killers he stands with? Or, alternatively: are you with us, or with the snowflakes, fake news peddlers and all the others trying to smear our past, our values, and our president?

The fact that the violence started over the planned removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee was secondary, but it managed to trigger some monumental (pun intended) aftershocks – like the tearing down of other Confederate monuments by angry crowds and the torching of a Lincoln bust in Chicago.

One unexpected (potential) victim of the emotional tsunami is Bolshevik leader Lenin. A statue of Lenin in Seattle was targeted by both right-wing protesters, and city Mayor Ed Murray. For both sides, the monument to the communist leader is just a prop for arguing respectively for and against the preservation of the Confederate memorial at Lake View Cemetery, and neither is apparently willing to buy the Lenin figure from the owner to bring it down.

Ironically, Lenin’s statue in Seattle is a curiosity, not an icon of communism or the Soviet Union. Originally from Czechoslovakia, it was bought from a scrapyard and brought to America by a collector. The bohemian community of Fremont regularly uses it as part of installations, dressing it in drag or putting a red star on its head for Christmas. The statue’s original symbolism does not appear to bother people who see it every day.

The artistic hijacking in Seattle is strangely mirrored on the opposite site of the world, in Ukraine. Its current government and nationalist groups have made it their goal to eradicate all symbols of its joint past with Russia, and hundreds of Lenin monuments left over from the Soviet days were the primary target. Just this week, the authorities reported removing 2,389 Soviet monuments in Ukraine, including all those of Lenin.

Some were not happy with this “Leninfall,” either due to sentimental feelings, or because the municipalities were expected to foot the bill for it. So, in some villages and towns, Lenin monuments were rededicated to acceptable historic figures like Pylyp Orlyk, an aide to controversial Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa.

Or even Darth Vader! A Lenin statue in Odessa was remade in the image of the Star Wars villain by a local politician who dresses as Darth Vader and even goes by that name.

A different fate was reserved for statues of another leader, who used to be as prominently displayed in his home country as Lenin was in the USSR. Saparmurat Niyazov – or as he preferred to be called, Turkmenbashi, the father of all Turkmens – was quite fond of praise. The president-for-life of Turkmenistan had an estimated 14,000 statues and busts of himself erected over the two decades of his rule.

The grandest one was placed atop the Arch of Neutrality, an almost 100-meter-high symbol of Turkmenistan’s policy of non-alignment. With its arms stretched up to the sky, the glittering Turkmenbashi rotated to always face the sun (a popular joke was that it was the sun that went across the sky to see the statue’s face).

A few years after Niyazov’s death, his successor ordered the arch and the monument to be removed from the central square of Ashgabat, and many observers expected that the gigantic monument of Turkmenbashi would never be seen again – for reasons Pharaoh Thutmose could relate to. They were wrong. The entire construction was simply moved to the outskirts of the city. The statue, however, no longer rotates – presumably to not turn its back to the people.

Prancing Horse Peace of Mind: Ferrari Extended Warranty Now Stretches to 15 Years https://briefnews.eu/prancing-horse-peace-of-mind-ferrari-extended-warranty-now-stretches-to-15-years/ https://briefnews.eu/prancing-horse-peace-of-mind-ferrari-extended-warranty-now-stretches-to-15-years/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 16:52:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prancing-horse-peace-of-mind-ferrari-extended-warranty-now-stretches-to-15-years/ 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast

A long warranty probably wouldn’t rank high on the list of reasons to buy a Ferrari, although given how expensive everything surrounding Ferraris is—including the prospect of getting one repaired—an extended warranty might be nice to have. Now the company has extended the warranty options for its cars’ main mechanical components for up to 15 years. Fittingly called the New Power15 extended service coverage, it lengthens the existing, 12-year warranty by offering the ability to buy a 12-month extension each year for three years. The extended coverage costs $ 4500 for cars with eight-cylinder engines and $ 5760 for those with V-12s.

–

The warranty duration applies to the date from when the new car is first registered. It is in addition to Ferrari’s standard, three-year factory warranty, and its seven-year free maintenance program. The three-year bumper-to-bumper coverage also can be extended by two years.

–

After that, Ferrari owners have the choice to buy the New Power coverage. The New Power warranty covers the car’s engine, gearbox, power take-off unit (PTU), suspension, and steering. The transferable coverage is available for both new and pre-owned Ferraris. It also can be bought for Ferraris that have had warranty coverage expire, provided the car passes a mechanical check-over.

–

–

“There is nothing else on the market that is providing this level of coverage,” said Enzo Francesconi, Ferrari North America’s vice president of after sales and operations. Now owners can get some peace of mind with their prancing horse.

What a time to be alive! World’s longest pizza stretches almost 2km (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/what-a-time-to-be-alive-worlds-longest-pizza-stretches-almost-2km-video/ https://briefnews.eu/what-a-time-to-be-alive-worlds-longest-pizza-stretches-almost-2km-video/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 08:00:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-a-time-to-be-alive-worlds-longest-pizza-stretches-almost-2km-video/

A group of dedicated pizza lovers banded together and triumphed over adversity to create a modern wonder of the world, of sorts, with a truly gigantic pizza that could easily feed hundreds.

The army of pizza pioneers and volunteers descended on the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California on Saturday morning to begin the challenge of constructing, and cooking, a pizza that ultimately measured 6,333 ft. (1.93 km) in length, as certified by representatives from the Guinness World Records.

Organizers had set a rather ambitious goal of 7,000 ft. (2.1 km) but the 6,333-ft. pie was enough to seal the official Guinness World record.

READ MORE: Slice of luck: Man on free pizza quest saved after almost freezing to death on Arizona mountain

On the official event website, organizers estimated that, for the 7,000-ft. pizza, the sauce would weigh about 5,600lbs (2,540kg), and the cheese would weigh about 3,600lbs.

The estimated total weight of the pizza was approximately 17,000lbs.

In order to cook the pizza, the volunteers deployed a special oven which travelled at a blistering speed of 17 feet per minute, operating a temperature of approximately 700 degrees Fahrenheit (371C).

The assemblers were rotated every 90 minutes, so they could take breaks and move to other areas where they were needed.

The organizers added some toppings to the last 1,000 feet of the pizza for variety.

Such a monster pizza required some serious support, with organizer Melanie Pacheco of Italforni USA confident the table was almost as impressive as the pizza itself.

“At-Pac Scaffolding will be building what we believe to be the longest scaffold ever built in the world. So that will be exciting to see as well,” Pacheco told the Fontana Herald News before the event.

Volunteers could grab a slice or two, but the majority of the pizza was donated to local homeless shelters and food banks.

The previous record was achieved by Napoli Pizza Village in Naples, Italy on May 18, 2016 with an impressive 6,082-foot, 3.4-inch (1.8 km) pizza, according to the official Guinness World Records website.
