  • A technical indicator called the “relative strength index” is the most stretched it’s been in 20 years, and the second-most extended since 1928, according to Morgan Stanley.
  • While this doesn’t necessarily spell impending doom for stocks, it should give investors caution as they consider adding to positions.

The further an asset climbs, the more likely it is to fall back down.

That’s the logic behind a technical indicator called the “relative strength index,” which Morgan Stanley says is the most stretched it’s been in 20 years when it comes to the benchmark S&P 500. In fact, the measure’s current reading of 93 is the second-highest since 1928.

Make no mistake, the S&P 500 has been trading above the 80 level that signals “overbought” condition for the better part of the last year. But as it’s continued its precipitous move higher, it’s shifted from simply overbought to historically stretched.

So what does that mean for the future of the stock index? Well, it’s certainly not good, although it’s not necessarily an outright bearish signal either, says Morgan Stanley. Rather, it’s an indicator that will coincide with — rather than cause — a correction once the market has fully topped.

“In the near-term, be aware of extreme sentiment and overbought conditions,” Morgan Stanley chief US equity strategist Mike Wilson wrote in a recent client note.

The question now becomes, when will the RSI truly peak? Morgan Stanley finds that following past instances when the gauge exceeded 80, an average correction of 3.5% has followed one month later.

“A pullback feels close and it is now just a matter of time,” said Wilson. “We would be buyers of that pullback but think it is prudent for investors who are looking to add risk to wait at this point.”

Morgan Stanley also shared a summary of past instances when RSI has been similarly overextended.

Sweden has exhausted its resources to take in more asylum seekers after the 2015 refugee influx, the country’s finance minister has said, suggesting that migrants and refugees will have better luck elsewhere in the EU.

“Integration is not working properly. It didn’t work before the autumn of 2015 either, but for me it is obvious that we cannot have a larger asylum reception than we are able to integrate,” Magdalena Andersson told the Dagens Nyheter.

“That is not good for the people who come here and it is not good for society at large either.” In 2015, at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe, nearly 163,000 people sought asylum in Sweden, according to the national migration agency.

“We must ensure that we never end up in such a situation as we were in the fall of 2015,” Andersson said, adding, the country is experiencing a major housing shortage and lack of teachers as a result.

“Now the focus must be on those who have the right to stay in Sweden” to provide them with work and accommodation, as well as to grant necessary education for children, the minister said.

Migrants and refugees will “have more opportunities if they go to another country,” Andersson said, adding, it will be faster to seek protection in other European states. Those coming to the Nordic country will face “a very strained situation,” she warned.

Amid the record-breaking refugee inflow to Sweden in 2015, the government had to back-track on its once-generous approach towards immigration the same year, tightening border controls and introducing ID checks. The government said it needed “respite,” pointing to its overstretched infrastructure.

The new restrictive policy resulted in less than 30,000 people coming to Sweden in 2016, with even smaller numbers in 2017. 

Andersson’s comments didn’t appeal to everybody in the government, though, with the education minister Gustav Fridolin from the Green Party warning there would “soon be no sanctuary left for those who really need to flee,” if everyone keep saying that migrants would be better off somewhere else.

Spare energy is all around us, from the pressure exerted by every footfall to the heat given off by heavy machinery. In some cases, like regenerative braking in cars, it’s easy to harvest, and the equipment needed to do so is simple and economic. In many others, however, we’re not there yet.

It’s not that we don’t have the materials to do so. Piezoelectric generators can harvest stresses and strains, while triboelectric generators can harvest friction, to give two examples. The problem is that their efficiency is low and the cost of the materials is currently high, making them bad fits for any applications.

But a study in today’s issue of Science describes a “yarn” made of carbon nanotubes that can produce electricity when stretched. Its developers go on to demonstrate its use in everything from wearable fabrics to ocean-based wave power generators. Given that the raw material for carbon nanotubes is cheap and there are lots of people trying to bring their price down, this seems to have the potential to find some economic applications.

BRISBANE Roar’s playing resources were stretched to the limit on Tuesday as they opened up their AFC Champions League Group E campaign with a 0-0 draw against Thai champions Muangthong United at Suncorp Stadium.

Playing their sixth match in 22 days as they continue to juggle domestic and continental commitments, a patched-up Roar fought hard for a point against a visiting side packed with Thai internationals, as well as the foreign class of Spanish striker Xisco and South Korean veteran Lee Ho.

The Roar were without a host of players, including the injured Matt McKay, Thomas Kristensen, Luke DeVere and Corey Brown.

Such has been their busy schedule, that the likes of potential match-winners Jamie Maclaren and Thomas Broich started on the bench as Brisbane coach John Aloisi continued to manage his squad through the club’s hectic schedule.

In all, Aloisi made six changes to the team that started in their weekend 2-2 draw with Perth Glory.

In came goalkeeper Jamie Young, defenders Jack Hingert and Cameron Crestani, playmaker Brett Holman, and attackers Manuel Arana and Nick D’Agostino.

They replaced Theo, DeVere, McKay, Broich, Maclaren and Joe Caletti.

Defender Crestani stood tall in his starting debut for Brisbane, while Caletti impressed after coming on at the start of the second half in a contest played in front of just 4536 fans.

The visitors started the better and had the opening chance of the contest in the 14th minute when Xisco forced goalkeeper Young into a save at his near post.

Young again came to Brisbane’s rescue in the 20th minute when at full stretch he tipped a goal-bound header from Adison Promrak over the crossbar.

The Roar had to wait until the 41st minute for their first chance. Tommy Oar fed overlapping fullback Dane Ingham, whose near post cross found D’Agostino.

But Muangthong keeper Kawin Thamsatchanan was up to the task, tapping D’Agostino’s flick on to the post.

Nine minutes into the second half, D’Agostino had another chance after a clever build-up involving substitutes Thomas Broich and Joe Caletti.

But the teenage striker’s shot was deflected wide of the target.

Both sides continued to attack, with Arana and Hingert having chances for the Roar, and Xisco fluffing a golden opportunity with a header from close range.

The Roar are back in action on Saturday when they host Wellington Phoenix in the A-League.

That’s followed by a Champions League clash against Ulsan Hyundai in South Korea next Tuesday.

Ulsan were beaten 2-0 last night by Japanese club Kashima Antlers.
