Big Little Lies returned to TV screens this year with the continuation of the harrowing story of Celeste Wright (played by Nicole Kidman), whose husband Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) was killed when Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) pushed him down a flight of stairs. Celeste has been keeping the secret of how her abusive husband really died a secret but Perry’s other Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) is determined to get to the bottom of things and apply pressure to her daughter-in-law. The first episode of the season saw Mary Louise diving into the uncomfortable topic of her late son at the dinner table alongside Celeste and her two boys – Perry’s sons. In a slightly comical yet haunting scene Mary Louise told her grandsons: “I wanted to scream. So you know what I did? I did scream.” She went on to demonstrate and Celeste couldn’t help but yell after her, asking her to stop for the boys’ sake. But Mary Louise refused to apologise telling the trio: “Sorry, my grief is too loud for you? I should be more discrete. “We should scream! We should scream, and beat our breast and tear our hair! Don’t you feel angry?” The scene surprised viewers with many claiming she stole the show. Now, the real life inspiration behind the moment has been revealed. It’s inspired by trauma-based psychotherapy created by Arthur Janov, who suggests that neurosis is caused by the repressed pain of childhood trauma. His theory continues by adding repressed pain can be sequentially brought to conscious awareness and resolved through experiencing specific incidents, and by then going on to fully express the resulting pain during therapy. READ MORE: Big Little Lies season 2: Meryl Streep sends fans into frenzy over Mary Louise scream Obviously, when put into practice – and in Mary Louise’s case, after hugely traumatic event – this can be tackled with a guttural scream. While this was tonally a little horrifying, it certainly showed off exactly how Mary Louise was feeling about losing her son in such strange and sinister situations. As a veteran actor, this role was no problem for the incredible Meryl Streep – and it seems she was dying to get involved from the beginning. According to the NZ Herald, Celeste star Nicole explained: “We didn’t know Mary Louise was Meryl’s real name. “But Liane knew and she wrote it and then said: ‘I want Meryl Streep!’” She continued: “But then I sent Meryl a text and when she responded after the [Golden] Globes – Reese and I were literally screaming on the phone with each other!” “I loved this show,” Meryl added. “I was addicted to it. “I thought it was an amazing exercise in what we know and what we don’t know about people … about family, about friends, how it flirted with the mystery of things. “What was unsaid, unshown, unknown was sort of the pull – the gravitational pull of the piece. And it was so exciting.” Big Little Lies Season 2 is available on digital download now. Big Little Lies left viewers in turmoil during the final episode’s bleak cliffhanger. After Bonnie (played by Zoe Kravits) pushed Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) down the stars, and subsequently killing him, the women of Monterey seemingly got away with the manslaughter. However it looks like their luck may be running out, as Meryl Streep joins the show in season two as Mary Louise Wright – the late Perry’s mother. Mary Louise is obviously interested in knowing exactly why her son is dead, and is certainly going to do everything she can to get to the bottom of it. Recently, the cast got together to discuss the new season, as reported by the NZ Herald, and also spoke about Meryl’s inclusion in the show. When author of the show’s source material, Liane Moriaty, began piecing together the story of season two, she did some research about Meryl ahead of time. Celeste Wright star Nicole Kidman then exclaimed: “We didn’t know Mary Louise was Meryl’s real name. “But Liane knew and she wrote it and then said: ‘I want Meryl Streep!’” However, despite their Hollywood renown, Nicole was not convinced she and her colleague, Reese Witherspoon – who plays Madeline Martha Mackenzie – could get Meryl on board. She went on: “Reese and I said: ‘We can’t get you Meryl!’ “But then I sent Meryl a text and when she responded after the [Golden] Globes – Reese and I were literally screaming on the phone with each other!” Meryl then chimed in to reveal she already had Big Little Lies on her radar, saying: “I loved this show. “I was addicted to it. I thought it was an amazing exercise in what we know and what we don’t know about people … about family, about friends, how it flirted with the mystery of things. “What was unsaid, unshown, unknown was sort of the pull – the gravitational pull of the piece. And it was so exciting.” “So, when I got the chance to join the crew,” Meryl went on. “I thought: ‘Yeah!’ I wanted to do it, to be in that world. The world that was created was amazing.” Recently Nicole spoke about season two at a panel in New York, and apparently let slip a huge spoiler for Perry star Alexander. Praising her co-star she explained: “He was the most incredible acting partner. And then he came back for season two.” After stumbling over her words a little, she laughed and attempted to clarify: “He has a little bit of a part in the sense of…on the basis of… OK, I’ll be quiet.” Does this mean Perry is back in season two after all? Big Little Lies season two continues 2am Monday on Sky Atlantic.

Mary Poppins Returns is going to sing and dance its way into movie theaters in just a few days, and Disney has unveiled another new clip that shows why Emily Blunt is truly the perfect person to take on this classic role.
Oh, and there’s also a featurette about Mary Poppins’ cousin Topsy, who’s played by Meryl Streep. It goes without saying that Streep is an acting legend, but (*whispers*) she’s kind of terrible in this movie! See for yourself below.
This clip takes place early in the movie when Mary arrives at the Banks’ house and begins to look after Michael’s young children. Like the rest of the movie, it’s very clearly meant to evoke a scene from the original; in this case, it’s the scene in which Julie Andrews’ version of the character uses magic to get the kids to clean up their room. Here, Blunt gamely steps up and charms her way through the intro to “Can You Imagine That?” – she has a beautiful singing voice, but anyone who saw Into the Woods, her previous collaboration with director Rob Marshall, knew that already.
For me, the aspect that really makes her stand out are the tiny mannerisms she adopts to give the character some attitude. Watch the way she looks one of the children up and down at the :05 mark. Or her smile at :29 showing that Mary genuinely enjoys using these magical abilities. It’s that mixture of attitude and sincerity that makes her the best (and maybe the only) fit for this role.
In stark contrast to Blunt’s wonderful performance is Streep’s work as Topsy, whom she plays with a vaguely Eastern European accent. These two videos are surprisingly representative of the movie as a whole: the “Can You Imagine That?” clip is a good example of how an actor’s natural charisma and take on a character can briefly overrule the sense that we’ve seen all of this before, while Streep’s Topsy is too eccentric for her own good, a collection of scarves and tics that never coalesces into a believable person. (The character originated in the P.L. Travers novels, but was gender-swapped for this movie.) To watch her in this movie is to be constantly reminded of Ed Wynn‘s Uncle Albert from the first movie, the character who floats across his apartment because he loves to laugh. Sorry, Streep stans – she simply isn’t given the ammunition in either songs or dialogue to be able to measure up here.
Mary Poppins Returns arrives in theaters on December 19, 2018. You can read our full review here.

The sequel to the hit 2008 musical has successfully surpassed a $ 100 million gross at the US box office, Screen Daily reports.
Another $ 5.8 million was added to its cumulative total this weekend, bringing it to a lively $ 103.8 million in the US alone. Its global haul is now thought to be north of $ 280 million.
The first movie made around $ 144.1 million in the US upon its release in 2008 – and while it seems unlikely now that this follow-up will match it, it’s still done very impressively indeed.
It’s also still doing well in the UK, after reigning at No1 for three consecutive weekends – beating even Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Ant-Man and the Wasp for a hat-trick of Friday-to-Sunday victories.
Whether or not it managed a fourth weekend at the top in this country won’t be announced until tomorrow.
But back to the US, it’s The Meg that has left analysts stunned.
The Jason Statham-starring shark movie was initially forecast to make $ 20 million in its first frame – but it’s thought to have taken around $ 44 million instead.
More than doubling initial projections, it now seems as though a sequel is much more likely.
The highest-grossing other new release is Slender Man at No4 ($ 11.3m), with BlackKklansman at No5 ($ 10.8m).
Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Disney’s Christopher Robin occupy numbers two and three respectively, with grosses of $ 20 million and $ 12.4 million.
And just ahead of Mamma Mia 2 (at No7) is The Spy Who Dumped Me; dropping three places to No6 in its second weekend on release, boasting a gross of $ 6.6m.
Mamma Mia’s success is continuing on the UK album chart too: on Friday it was confirmed that it is at the top of the charts for a third straight week in the UK.
The album contains the cast recordings of all the tracks heard in the movie, plus Lily James singing I Wonder (Departure) and Meryl Streep’s take on The Day Before You Came.
The soundtrack to the first Mamma Mia movie is also still in the Top 10, as is the country’s second best-selling album of all time: ABBA’s Gold greatest hits collection.
Whether or not the film will be followed by a Mamma Mia 3 remains to be seen, but Amanda Seyfried has said she doubts it could happen without seeming like an obvious money-grab.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out now.
In an official interview to promote the hit sequel, the actress credited the music of ABBA with making Here We Go Again so resonate.
The movie has had a strong performance at the box office worldwide, and has also received a far better than expected reception from most critics.
“It’s overwhelming, and it’s unbelievable because we never thought ten years later we’d be back,” Streep said prior to the sequel’s release date.
“And I think the world needs Mamma Mia more than ever.”
On what makes the series – which started with the 2008 original – so successful, she said: “It’s ABBA and it’s the music – there’s something about the music, it’s so enlivening and it’s about summer and falling in love and losing love and never losing love.”
Meryl has three song appearances on the soundtrack, one of which – The Day Before You Came – does not feature in the movie itself.
“[Recording] was fantastic and we did the recording in the same little chapel, a recording studio near Hampstead where we recorded the original.
“We went right back in and did the second version and it felt like a gift.”
Joining Streep in the returning cast are Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgard and Colin Firth.
Seyfried plays Streep’s on-screen daughter Sophie, and she said of her performance: “I think Amanda brings something to this particular incarnation of Mamma Mia that’s very special.
“She’s the heartbeat of the film. Her emotion carries the whole story forward and she really moved me.
“I think she’s magic.”
Cher has joined the fun as Donna’s mother Ruby, while Lily James plays the younger Donna.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out now.
WARNING: Spoiler ahead for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
The musical has had enormous success thus far, but fans have been surprised to find out within the first few minutes that Steep’s character Donna had died one year earlier.
In a new interview, Craymer has spoken about Streep being happy to take a backseat and let the newer stars – such as Lily James as a younger Donna – step up to the plate.
“To be honest, she was always a part of it. Would we have done another film without her?” Craymer told The Hollywood Reporter.
“She was so glorious in the first movie and has so much affection for Mamma Mia! So, she was always a part of a conversation of another film.
“I think for her, it was a matter of what and how, and we also did chat occasionally about it. It was a matter of the right script.
“Also, Meryl likes to conquer new things, and she had played Donna Sheridan and been singing nine or so ABBA songs in the first movie. I think she felt that she liked the idea of leaving this to the younger ones and she wanted to be involved, but she wasn’t gonna take on such a big role.”
“So, I think that helped explore the emotional heft of what [director and co-writer] Ol Parker wrote in the fact that it’s a story of life and marriage and loss and love, but also it’s very important to Meryl what song she does.
“If she was gonna sing, My Love, My Life is a very, very strong song like The Winner Takes It All. It’s a huge storytelling song, it’s got a big emotional punch and, of course, she has this incredible voice.
“So, I think there were many decisions there, but it came very much from Meryl being a part of all of them.”
Parker himself had previously indicated that Streep’s low screen-time was not a matter of her having too busy a schedule.
“It was about finding the best story to tell that worked for everybody and this was the story we settled on,” he told Vulture.
“I think it’s the most meaningful and emotional and impactful way to tell that story and this [Donna’s death] was my suggestion.
“Obviously it was greatly discussed with everyone and Meryl was thrilled and delighted with it.”
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out now.
It’s not just Star Wars and Marvel who can build up the tension for a major shock reveal. Forget whether Rey is really a Skywalker or who will come back from the dead after the Snap, this is the big one.
Ever since the main Mamma Mia 2 trailers arrived, fans have been trying to piece the clues together.
Donna was never shown interacting properly with the other characters, leading many to worry that she might, in fact, have died. But then Meryl Streep showed up at the world premiere in London, along with all the cast.
Mamma Mia indeed, the truth has finally been revealed. The movie is out today in the UK and fans are in for an emotional rollercoaster.
WARNING SPOILERS:
Mamma Mia regular Christine Baranski recently warned the characters “have been informed by loss and things have happened in their lives – big things.”
Julie Walters revealed that a certain moment on set had brought her to tears and the soundtrack is packed with clues.
Entertainment Weekly described Streep’s role as: “little more than a glorified cameo” and that is because she is barely in the movie.
And yes, Donna really is dead and the film wasts no time in dealing the blow.
The opening scenes reveal that Donna died one year before and her grieving daughter is relaunching her pride and joy as Hotel Bella Donna.
Donna is mentioned throughout the movie by the bereaved characters, even as the full backstory plays out with Lily James as the young version of Donna, meeting the three men who will become Sophie’s ‘Fathers.’
So when does Meryl Streep actually appear on screen and what does it mean?
The filmmakers keep audiences guessing right to the very, very end.
Streep makes a single cameo in the final scene when Sophie’s new daughter is being christened. In a heartbreaking moment, Donna and Sophie sing the ABBA ballad My Love, My Life to each other.
But the movie is careful to end on a high and finishes with a riotous group singalong as all the characters from the past and present belt out Super Trouper.
MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN IS OUT NOW IN THE UK
James plays the younger version of Streep’s character Donna in the musical, due for release next week.
The 29-year-old will be best known to fans for her work in Downton Abbey, the live-action Cinderella, and last year’s critically acclaimed Baby Driver.
In the new musical, she takes the lion’s share of the singing – as revealed by the soundtrack, out today.
“I had no idea Lily James had the singing chops,” Streep said.
“Some people sing from the bottom of their feet, right up. She shakes the rafters, she’s amazing.”
James said: “When I found out I would be part of the sequel, i was terrified and very excited.
“Donna is a character so beloved and Meryl Streep is the best actress of all time.”
“Lily has a great energy,” Streep beamed. “And her spirit is what young Donna was.
“She’s just perfect.”
Streep has not been seen much in any trailers for the sequel, prompting speculation that Donna could have died.
Although the megastar does have appearances on the soundtrack, many have assumed that she will be seen in ghost-like spiritual form.
“I really never thought that there would be a sequel,” she admitted. “When this script came, it took my breath away.”
She added: “Walking onto the set and seeing Colin [Firth] and Stellan [Skarsgard] and Pierce [Brosnan] and Christine Baranski and Julie Walters and Dominic [Cooper] and Amanda [Seyfried]…
“The music starts up and you put on the spandex and honey, it all comes together.”
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out on July 20.
The popular actress, who plays Donna, has been missing from the trailers and hasn’t played a big role in the movie’s publicity campaign.
As a result, fans have been busy speculating that Donna may have died since the events of the first movie, and will show up only in spiritual or flashback form.
Still, Streep beamed in a new featurette that the new film has “an incredible joy”.
Of the finished product, she declared: “It just has an indescribably joy in it, and pure fun.”
The tracklisting for the sequel’s soundtrack has finally been revealed ahead of its release on CD and digital download tomorrow (July 13).
Streep will be performing My Love, My Life with Amanda Seyfried and Lily James, and The Day Before You Came as a solo number.
She is also credited as part of the ensemble in Super Trouper.
Cher has joined the cast to play her mother, and will sing Fernando; while Lily James plays Donna’s younger self.
James has the lion’s share of the music; singing on When I Kissed The Teacher, I Wonder (Departure), Waterloo, Why Did It Have To Be Me?, I Have A Dream, Andante Andante, The Name of the Game, Knowing Me Knowing You, Mamma Mia, My Love My Life and Super Trouper.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is out on July 20.
Netflix wants more Panama Papers-related projects in their line-up. They already have one film in the works about that subject, and now it looks like they’re circling Steven Soderbergh‘s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. Plus: Meryl Streep has joined the cast, and Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas are both in talks to star.
We’ve already reported on Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. The film will focus on “the largest leak of corporate data in history, when 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonesca were revealed back in 2015 and detailed the various legal and illegal ways powerful people and corporations hide their money in offshore accounts.” Soderbergh’s take is going to be based on author Jake Bernstein‘s book Secrecy World, which examines “the web of money laundering and other criminal activity revealed in the data leak.” Now we have some updates.
First up: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a relatively unknown actress named Meryl Streep will star in Soderbergh’s film. Per THR, “Streep’s character details are being kept in the secret [sic] but sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie.”
And that’s not all. Deadline reports that Antonio Banderas and recent Oscar winner Gary Oldman are both circling the project. There’s no word on who Oldman or Banderas might be playing, but they’re both interesting, talented actors who will each bring their own unique gifts to the film. Banderas has worked with Soderbergh before, in the film Haywire.
In addition to this potential casting news, Deadline also reveals that Netlfix has shown interest in acquiring the project. If they do, this will be the second Panama Papers drama from the streaming service. In 2016, Netflix announced plans to make a Panama Papers movie produced by ER and Shameless producer John Wells. Here’s info about that film:
Netflix and John Wells Productions (Burnt, August Osage County, Love and Mercy) are teaming up to tell the definitive story behind The Panama Papers and the two journalists who, working through an anonymous source known as John Doe, cracked open an unprecedented torrent of lies, diversions and information that revealed how the wealthy hid billions of dollars offshore through a little known law firm in Panama. The work, released in collaboration with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), set off an international firestorm, triggering the resignation of heads of state, judicial investigations in over a dozen countries and a global debate on just how easy it has become for the wealthy to avoid taxes, game the system and evade the law.
Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World’s Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money, a recently released book by Obermaier and Obermayer and will work with producers Wells and Claire Rudnick Polstein and executive producer Zach Studin of John Wells Productions to bring to life the dramatic story in a feature film. Marina Walker, ICIJ deputy director, and Gerard Ryle, who leads the ICIJ’s headquarters staff in Washington D.C., and oversaw the more than 400 journalists in 76 countries on the Panama Papers, are also on-board to collaborate on the film.
Just why Netflix would want two dramas about the same subject is a bit of a puzzler, but I’m sure they have their reasons. Of these two projects, the Soderbergh project is the film I’m most interested in, simply because I love Soderbergh’s work and I’m thrilled that he’s releasing so many new movies now after his brief retirement. Also: the thought of Meryl Streep working with Steven Soderbergh is really cool.
