Strava’s CEO has responded after the fitness-tracking app released a global map of activity that appears to expose several sensitive US military and humanitarian relief sites around the world.

“In building [the map], we respected activity and profile privacy selections, including the ability to opt out of heatmaps altogether,” Strava CEO James Quarles wrote in a statement sent to Business Insider.

“However, we learned over the weekend that Strava members in the military, humanitarian workers, and others living abroad may have shared their location in areas without other activity density and, in doing so, inadvertently increased awareness of sensitive locations.”

Quarles wrote that he had family members in the military, and that his company is “taking this matter seriously and understand our responsibility.”

Quarles committed himself to “working with military and government officials to address potentially sensitive data” as well as streamlining the privacy features and “reviewing features that were originally designed for athlete motivation and inspiration to ensure they cannot be compromised by people with bad intent.”

Nowhere in the statement does Quarles apologize or accept or hint at any kind of forethought, wherein he might have envisioned negative impacts from the map beforehand.

As is normally the case with internet publishing, once the map went up, it was likely cached and cannot be removed. Anyone who gains access to Strava’s data can use it to track the movements of individuals, some of whom may be military personnel who visit classified sites.

Quarles refers to his app as a tool for “athlete motivation,” but does not acknowledge that much of the data displayed in the heat map, and likely the most sensitive data, comes from people who are not engaged in athletic pursuits, and have merely left the tracker on.

When US soldiers walk to the location of a classified patriot missile battery designed to defend their base from enemy missile fire, they’re not engaging in athletics. But the release of Strava’s heat map has now potentially exposed those journeys to the world.

Following the publication of the map and its subsequent revelations, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has been briefed and is reviewing the US military’s security practices.

Location data in fitness apps is frequently a good thing, since it helps you remember and optimize your routes. However, it’s also producing an unexpected security risk: it’s revealing details of secret military bases. UCA analyst Nathan Ruser has discovered that Strava’s publicly available activity map includes the fitness routes of soldiers and agents in sensitive locations, including American bases in Afghanistan and Syria, the UK’s Mount Pleasant airbase in the Falkland Islands, a suspected CIA base in Somalia and even Area 51. It’s mostly American and British troops who show up, but Russian bases have also been outlined by the Strava data.

While many of these locations are well known, they may give away info that governments might not want public, such as the likely location of living quarters and the most frequently-trafficked paths. In Afghanistan, the activity data extends beyond bases and hint at patrol or supply routes.

Strava has reminded users that they could turn off location sharing, and that the map doesn’t include private activities or areas deemed private. Many people aren’t aware of what the app shares, however, and might not understand the implications of publicly sharing that data from sensitive locations. And of course, not every fitness-minded app has a public activity map that makes searches easy. It’s doubtful that Strava could have considered every possible effect in advance, but this is a reminder that open data can sometimes include more than some would be comfortable with. Likewise, this might prompt militaries to limit smartphone use or educate soldiers on the importance of privacy.

New Balance and Intel have teamed up to release one of the first new Android Wear watches of the year. The RunIQ fitness watch is a runner’s companion that features built-in support for Strava, as well as New Balance’s own running app. Since it has every necessary sensor you’d need to track a workout, it’s also competing with the most equipped smartwatches on the market, including the Apple Watch Series 2, the LG Watch Sport, and even the Garmin Fenix 3 HR.

Stuffed with a GPS, optical heart-rate monitor, and more, the $ 299 RunIQ wants to be the smartwatch that runners choose to wear both on the trail and at the office. But just because it was developed by one of the biggest athletic apparel companies in the country doesn’t mean it’s the most valuable tool a runner could have.

Look and feel

What Nike did with its model of the Apple Watch Series 2, New Balance did with the RunIQ Android Wear fitness watch. It’s an all-black mammoth of a tracker with a 1.39-inch, 400×400-pixel, AMOLED display embedded in a thick, matte black case. On the crown are three physical buttons, up- and down-select buttons, and a larger, middle home button that’s branded with a tiny New Balance logo. The top button opens the default running app, which is Strava on this device; the middle button acts like most similar buttons do on Android Wear by bringing up the app drawer; and the bottom button acts as a one-touch lap counter while you’re recording a run.
