  • In June, Trump's lawyer wouldn't let DOJ and FBI agents search boxes in a storage room in Mar-a-Lago. 
  • The DOJ said 76 classified documents were found in that room during the raid on Trump's property two months later. 
  • The discovery "casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter," the DOJ wrote in a court filing Tuesday. 

The FBI and Department of Justice discovered 76 classified documents in a Mar-a-Lago storage room during the August raid — the same room Trump's lawyer refused to let them search in June, according to court documents. 

The filing, released Tuesday night, revealed additional information about the August 8 raid including the DOJ's conclusion that "efforts were likely taken" to obstruct its investigation into Trump's handling of government records.

Trump's lawyer let a DOJ attorney and FBI agents into a Mar-a-Lago storage room after turning over 38 classified documents, according to the filing.

But, Trump's lawyer "explicitly prohibited" agents from looking inside any boxes that were still in the room.

Eventually, investigators gathered enough evidence that classified documents were still in that room to apply for a search warrant. 

"The government also developed evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed from the Storage Room and that efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation," the DOJ said in the court filing. 

The August raid uncovered 76 classified documents in that room alone, according to the court document. 

Investigators found twice the number of documents Trump's attorneys had taken "weeks" to turn over, according to the filing — which the government says "casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter."

The Department of Justice has said in court filings that it is investigating whether the former president broke three federal statutes — including the Espionage Act — by keeping classified national security documents at his Florida estate after leaving office.

Smartphones hold most of our lives now in photos, videos, music, and more, and Samsung’s latest tech will make it so they can store even more. The Korean manufacturer announced that it has created the first 1TB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) chip for smartphones, which will allow future handsets to have internal storage capacities similar to those of laptops.

“The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing a more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices,” said Cheol Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung.

Samsung has already begun mass-producing the chip, which it claims has read speeds of up to 1,000Mbps—nearly twice the sequential read speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD and faster than Samsung’s previous 512GB chip. A device with the 1TB can reportedly store 260 10-minute, 4K videos—a massive amount that dwarfs the capabilities of current smartphones with lower-capacity eUFS chips. The 1TB chips will also have the same package size as its 512GB counterpart, so smartphones won’t need to get larger to accommodate the chips.

While Ford already revealed its redesigned Explorer SUV, today at the Detroit Auto Show we’re learning more about the new Hybrid version. Ford claims that this year it’s introducing a whole slew of hybrid vehicles that combine performance and extended range via their efficiency, and this one is just the first. While we don’t have all the details on its powertrain yet, the 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid has a 3.3-liter V6 that’s part of a hybrid system producing 318 HP (no word on torque — yet), while pulling more than 500 miles of range from its 19.3 gallon gas tank.

Beyond making life a little greener for SUV owners, Explorer chief engineer Bill Gubing points out that “Reduced cargo space in hybrids is a thing of the past for Ford customers.” Unlike other Ford hybrid vehicles that sacrificed space for big, awkwardly-placed battery packs, this one slides its specially designed liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery into the chassis beneath the second row seats so owners don’t have to give up legroom or cargo space.

At 4,969 pounds it’s even lighter than the 400 HP ST version Ford is also showing off today. Still, we’ll want to see its storage capabilities for ourselves — as well as the optional 10.1-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen — and hear more about how much it tows before hooking up the boat and taking a trip up north.

In September, South Australia confirmed a plan to set up an AU$ 100 million (USD $ 72 million) fund to help households purchase home energy storage batteries. Households could receive subsidies of up to AU$ 6,000 (USD $ 4,300) on a purchase of a battery that would store electricity either from a solar-panel system or from the South Australian grid. The electricity could then be used during an emergency or a blackout.

After a year as the home of the world’s largest grid-tied battery (built by Tesla), South Australia is becoming a hub for battery investment.

Other, non-Tesla battery makers are taking note. This week, German battery maker Sonnen started producing batteries at an old GM Holden factory in Elizabeth, South Australia. Sonnen has long experience in the home energy storage market, deploying batteries for German households before Tesla announced its Powerwall. Now, it intends to use its Elizabeth factory to produce batteries not only for South Australians who hope to take advantage of the government’s new subsidies but also to ship home storage batteries to other places in the Asia market, according to PV Magazine.

A company called Energy Vault has proposed a new utility-scale battery that is both old and new at the same time. The “battery” is mechanical, rather than chemical, and stores energy much like pumped hydro does, but it does it with bricks.

If you’re not familiar with pumped hydro, it works like this. The system pumps water from a lower elevation to a higher elevation when electricity is plentiful and cheap. When electricity becomes more expensive, operators release that water through a hydroelectric turbine to give the grid some extra juice. Similarly, Energy Vault wants to build a system of six cranes, which will electrically stack heavy bricks into a tower when electricity is cheap and plentiful. When electricity becomes more scarce and expensive, the cranes will release each brick and harvest the energy from their fall.

This system solves an important problem inherent to pumped hydro: it requires a pretty specific kind of topography and often causes environmental concerns.

Apple isn’t known for offering virtually any promos to iPhone buyers, let alone iCloud users, but it’s making exceptions for both ahead of the 2018 iPhones. Reddit users have discovered a promo that lets subscribers to the four major US carriers get two months of 200GB of iCloud storage for free. The campaign is clearly aimed at iPhone upgraders — the offer page touts the extra space as helpful for backing up all your files so that you can be ready “when your new iPhone arrives.” The deal is only available for a “limited time” to new iCloud subscribers, and you’ll be charged for the 200GB tier if you don’t cancel before the two-month period is over.

This isn’t exactly the deal of the century, provided the terms don’t change in the near future. The 9to5Mac team noted that the 200GB iCloud tier costs $ 3 per month, and Apple has already been offering 30-day iCloud trials since May. This would matter more if Apple offered access for a longer stretch of time, much like the six months of Apple Music for subscribers to Verizon’s newer plans. It’s safe to say this won’t sway you toward an iPhone if the freebie is a deciding factor — not when rivals have offered free headphones and TVs.

That doesn’t look like the goal here, though. Rather, Apple appears to be using the iPhone upgrade cycle as a chance to spur its growing services. It’s hoping iPhone owners will see a whole-device backup (for most users, anyway) as just alluring enough that they’re willing to spend a bit of cash every year to maintain that safety net. This won’t satisfy the many people who wish iCloud’s free tier would offer more than a tiny 5GB of space, but it’s an acknowledgment that Apple needs to be more aggressive if it’s going to compete with the likes of Google Drive or Dropbox.

Late last week, California utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) asked the state to approve four lithium-ion battery storage projects. Three of which would be owned and operated by a third party, and one, built by Tesla, would be owned and operated by PG&E itself.

One of the projects—spearheaded by energy company Vistra (which recently merged with Dynegy)—could become the world’s first grid-scale, lithium-ion battery installations to store more than a gigawatt-hour of energy.

Tesla’s project is also huge. It would deliver 730MWh of energy, but Tesla’s contract with PG&E suggests the utility could opt to increase the size of the battery to 1.1GWh.
