Held in damp but drying conditions, Miller gambled on switching to slicks to net the first premier class pole position by an Australian rider in five and a half years.

It also marks the first pole position for a satellite Ducati, Miller edging out Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Tech3 Yamaha’s Johann Zarco with his last lap of the session.

“I’m stoked, can’t thank the team enough for getting me here,” Miller said. “It’s a cool feeling, that’s for sure.”

The 12 riders started the Q2 session on wets, Miller doing one flying lap tha tput him well inside the top 10 before gambling that slick tyres would be up to the task.

“I remembered the race from Moto3 a few years ago when it was wet and they were all on slicks and they had really good grip, and I know here the wet tyres overheat really quickly,” he said.

“I went out on the wets, did one lap and it was quite a good lap time, I was happy to have one in the bank. Then it was an all-in bet for the slicks.”

Miller wasn’t the only one to test the waters on dry rubber.

Yes, no surprises, Marc Marquez was the one to have a go on slicks too, but he came straight back in for another set of wets without even starting a flying lap.

The Australian persisted, taking three laps to beat his wet-tyre time. His fourth lap, completed after the chequered flag, did the trick.

“For me, once I made my bet I had to stick with it,” Miller said.

“I knew I had to change and go quite quickly to do as many laps to build some temperature and to understand where I could push and where I had to be calm. I just kept working on trying to manage it.

“Through (Turns) 7 and 8 was the worst, it was completely wet, a lot of standing water and was very dangerous. I nearly went down a few times there by just trying to touch the gas a little bit and it just tried to go over on me.”

Miller’s pole-winning effort heads a mixed-up grid courtesy of the damp conditions.

Tito Rabat, the Australian’s former teammate at Marc VDS, will start from the best grid position of his MotoGP career after qualifying fourth, with Alex Rins’ Suzuki alongside.

World champion Marc Marquez could only manage sixth after reverting back to wets, 0.611sec off Miller’s pace, to round out the second row.

Qatar winner Andrea Dovizioso will start from the middle of the third row after fighting his way out of Q1. His factory Ducati teammate wasn’t so lucky, Jorge Lorenzo missing the final transfer spot into Q2 and consigned to starting from 14th.

The factory Yamahas will have to fight their way up from lowly grid positions if they are to repeat their 1-2 of last year, Maverick Vinales qualifying ninth while Valentino Rossi could only manage 11th.

The MotoGP race gets underway at 4am AEST on Monday morning.

As first reported by The Courier-Mail two weeks ago, there is a massive push to get Stokes on the field by the third Test at the WACA.

The picture is expected to become clearer in the coming days amid reports police are finally set to announce their intentions.

If Stokes is charged for his part in an alleged assault his Ashes campaign is all but over, but Sir Ian Botham has expressed a growing chorus of confidence in the UK that the world’s premier all-rounder could be cleared by authorities and rushed onto a plane for a stunning recall mid-series after sitting out a two-Test ban.

England cricket boss Andrew Strauss is expected to arrive in Australia this week, while back home Stokes has given a telling insight into his own Ashes-focused mindset by posting a series of videos back bowling full tilt in the nets at Durham.

England touched down in Brisbane on Sunday and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow said Stokes joining the Ashes squad would be good for the game.

“It’d be amazing if Stokesy came out here. I’m sure you guys would all think the same,” Bairstow said.

“He’s a fantastic cricketer. We don’t know what’s going on at the moment, that’s completely out of our hands and until that’s resolved we actually don’t know what’s going to happen.

“But I’m sure it will get resolved sooner rather than later … because at the end of the day we want the best cricketers playing in the Ashes, don’t we?

“We don’t want to see guys not playing and the competition levels and the standard down due to that.”

The initial indications coming out of England were that the board wanted to take heavy action against Stokes.

But the longer the police investigation has drags on, the more that stance appears to have softened. England players are understood to have become increasingly optimistic that Stokes will soon join them.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann admits he hasn’t ruled out Stokes’ arriving.

“You’re always planning for every player, even though he’s not in the squad,” Lehmann said.

“We’ll just wait and see what happens with ECB and the courts. We can’t worry about it at the moment.”

AUSTRALIAN rising star Alex Edmondson has claimed his first World Tour podium result after finishing third in the opening prologue of the Tour of Romandie.

In wet and slippery conditions in the Swiss town of Aigle, the Orica-Scott rider put his track skills to good use, blasting around the twisting 4.8km course to take the white jersey as best young rider.

“Stoked to get my first pro podium with a third in today’s @TourDeRomandie prologue!” Edmondson Tweeted.

“Thanks for the messages, now to grovel up the mountains!”

Only Italian Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo) and Britain’s Alex Dowsett (Movistar) went faster than Edmondson, the 2014 individual pursuit world champion.

“Alex rode really well today, he did a video recon before, he checked the race profiles and trained on the course so he was well prepared,” Orica-Scott sport director Neil Stephens said.

“I think it will be the first of many WorldTour podiums, he is a very talented bike rider so I think we will see more from him.”

The Tour of Romandie marks the first time this year that our de France contenders Chris Froome (Team Sky) and Richie Porte (BMC) have gone head-to-head.

Both rode conservatively, finishing 29 seconds and 33 seconds behind, respectively. Porte was content to finish unscathed after teammate Tejay van Garderen crashed in the wet.

“After the conditions today, I am just happy that I stayed upright,” the Australian said.

“I felt pretty good on the bike considering I’ve had a bit of a gap between races. It was great to get the race started, and I am now looking forward to the next few road stages.”

Froome described the race as “really sketchy”.

“It’s not worth coming off on one of these corners at this point in the season,” Froome said.

“We’ve got a week of racing ahead of us. Romandie is one of the key races in my build up to the Tour and hopefully I’ll be able to go away with a solid week of racing in my legs by the end of the race.”

Stage 1 takes the peloton into the mountains and a demanding uphill finish into Champery certain to create significant time gaps.

Canadian slopestyle skier Teal Harle made sure his final World Cup of the season was a memorable one.

The 20-year-old from Campbell River, B.C., won gold in Friday’s World Cup season finale in Switzerland, his first podium finish of his career. Moments after climbing down from the podium, he credited his positive mindset for the victory.

“For sure when I feel good, when I’m in a good mood, I ski better and I have less stress, so I just have more success when I’m stoked and I’m having a good time,” Harle said.

Canada’s Marielle Thompson capped off her Crystal Globe-winning season by scoring gold at the the World Cup ski cross event at Blue Mountain, Ont., on Sunday.

Mixed synchro dive teams bring home medals

The first diving World Series event of the season was a successful one for Canada’s mixed synchro teams.

At the event in Beijing on Saturday, Olympians Jennifer Abel and Francois Imbeau-Dulac earned Canada’s first medal of the World Series season with a bronze in the mixed synchro three-metre springboard.

Then on Sunday, Meaghan Benfeito and Vincent Riendeau took bronze in mixed synchro 10-metre platform.

McEwen, Koe stay perfect at Brier

Defending champion Kevin Koe and Manitoba’s Mike McEwen had a 3-0 record through the opening weekend of the Brier in St. John’s. 

With the home crowd behind him, Brad Gushue started the Canadian men’s curling championship off with a victory over Alberta before McEwen handed him a loss in early action on Sunday.
