It is an extraordinary rise in coaching status for the former Brisbane Broncos rugby league forward turned World Cup-winning All Black in 2011.

Thorn only retired from top-tier rugby as a player at 40 in 2015 after more than two decades as one of the most respected figures in both codes.

At the time, he admitted that coaching was a great unknown and he had everything to learn.

In just over two years he has convinced the Queensland Rugby Union he is the man to drag them out of their four-season rut.

They are backing the force of his personality and standards, with Tony McGahan as his senior assistant, because by every measure he is still a cub coach.

Thorn’s only head coaching experience has been with this year’s undefeated Queensland Under-20s and the Queensland Country side he has transformed from easybeats into leaders of the National Rugby Championship.

He worked with the Reds players this season as a contact coach, on tackling and in the gym as a much-admired tyrant with high standards.

It is a major leap of faith from the QRU board and the decision was recommended by a rugby committee which included former Wallabies Nathan Sharpe, Mark Connors and Sam Cordingley.

Stiles only returned from a family holiday in the US on Wednesday and the decision was relayed upon his return.

The drums had been beating about his shaky tenure even before he went abroad following a post-season review of the Reds’ poor four-from-15 season.

For weeks, QRU chief executive Richard Barker, who also sat on the rugby committee, could offer no guarantee that Stiles would still be at the helm for 2018.

It was the smoke that turned into Thursday’s fire.

Stiles will be crushed. He played more than 90 matches for the Reds and poured more than a decade into his varied coaching education to win his dream job.

He invested so much into restoring a strong team culture at the Reds and was unafraid of making tough calls like moving on 112-game stalwart Rob Simmons in June so the Reds could keep young gun locks Izack Rodda and Lukhan Tui, who have since played for the Wallabies.

Stiles stirred the Reds into producing their best interstate performance since 2013 against the NSW Waratahs this year when he was behind the masterstroke of wearing maroon jerseys for the one-off occasion.

Unfortunately, that clash was still lost 29-26 at the death, despite a four tries-to-two ledger. When heaped on top of another close-call loss to the champion Crusaders, when the Reds’ poorly managed the final minutes, it eroded Stiles’s position.

Thorn will be the Reds’ third change of direction in coaching since Ewen McKenzie guided the team to the finals for last time in 2013.

Richard Graham (2014-16) was sacked two games into the 2016 season, Stiles and Matt O’Connor completed the treading water year of 2016 as co-coaches and Stiles ran the show this year.

Graham, O’Connor and now Stiles were cut short on their contracts which has heaped financial pain on the QRU.

This is on top of the clumsy contracting of 2015 coaching consultant John Connolly which recently cost the organisation $ 150,000-plus in a court decision.

Julia Stiles may have made a name for herself 18 years ago with her feminist portrayal of Kat Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You, but she’s been a permanent fixture in cinema and TV ever since, playing an assortment of seriously badass female characters.

And her new TV show, Riviera, is no exception. Sky Atlantic’s new 10-part series charts the life of Julia’s character, Georgina, whose husband is mysteriously killed in a yacht explosion leaving her to unearth the secrets beneath his fortune and lavish lifestyle. If it sounds dramatic, that’s because it is – when BuzzFeed UK sat down for a chat with Julia recently she revealed that this is the first time she’s had to actively distance herself from a character after a day of shooting because she “experiences to much tragedy” in the show. Julia also has no idea how the plot will culminate, as the cast shot multiple endings.

But that’s not all Julia told us during our chat. In homage to the movie that propelled her into the mainstream consciousness, we decided to find out 10 things we never knew about her before – and the results were honest, funny and enlightening.

Julia Stiles: A sommelier. I mean, just because wine is great. But I feel that it’d be really interesting too – the way wine is grown and cultivated. You’d probably get to go to some interesting parts of the world.

JS: Anywhere where there’s sun and salt water is pretty great. The south of France is amazing and I really can’t say that enough. I lived there during the filming of Riviera and even though we were working there, every weekend when we had time off I’d go exploring and it felt like a mini vacation. It has the food, the beach, the language. It’s pretty wonderful. It really was an extraordinary place to live.

JS: Definitely not frogs’ legs. I’ve tried them and ugh. I’d say snails, but I would just have the butter and garlic part without the snail. That’s the best part.

JS: It was Boss Baby. And I actually went to the [movie] theatre. I feel like there’s been a lot of good TV lately. I’m really into Fleabag – I just watched the whole season in probably 3 days. Veep is also great. I really look forward to Sundays when I can see Veep.

JS: Speak up, I guess. It’s broad but it’s important to have your voice heard. And I think “you only live once” is a pretty good motto.

JS: I got what I called a baby banjo for Christmas a few years ago. It’s a 4 string banjo that is more like a ukulele that I take with me when I travel because it’s tiny. And I can kind of play it. That’s a secret mini talent.

JS: Pretty much anything that Beyoncé does. “The Beyoncé” is what I’ll call it. Because whatever dance she does, it’s now hers.

Bonus fact: After hearing that Julia loves Beyoncé, we played “Lemonade” while we shot the stunning photos for this post. During the shoot, Julia revealed that she has “Formation” set as her alarm. Brb, doing the same.

JS: I did go, but it was when I was a junior. I went to a senior prom because I was invited by my gay best friend. My mom still has the pictures.

JS: When people say “sorry” when they don’t really mean it. Like, a politeness or formality sorry. Although I do spend a lot of time in Canada and they say “I’m sorry” as an “excuse me.” So I guess I should come up with a different pet peeve!

JS: I love going swimming, whether it’s indoors or outdoors. And then cooking dinner for friends is always fun. Just simple stuff. I also love going to concerts and hearing live music. There’s a band I haven’t seen live yet who I would really like to – it’s a great, great band called Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. They’re so good. The whole album is so, so good.

JS: It was a while ago, but yes I do. I went to see The Spice Girls during the filming of that movie. I’m pretending I only went because my younger sister wanted to go and I was chaperoning her, but I actually secretly wanted to go too.

THE “absolutely abrasive” style of Karmichael Hunt can be the key to a Reds upset in Samoa and final proof he deserves an immediate Wallabies debut against Fiji on June 10.

Coach Nick Stiles paid Hunt a major compliment when rating him as influential as Quade Cooper at the Reds this year because of his fearless rushing defence, support play and the intensity of his running from the back.

In steamy Apia, the fullback’s strongest assets will all have to be on song if a chastened Reds outfit is to topple the Blues, even minus injured All Black Sonny Bill Williams (knee).

Stiles wielded the axe as promised with inconsistent Wallabies Nick Frisby and Rob Simmons dropped and prop Sam Talakai benched after last Friday’s crash to the Western Force.

James Tuttle is in at halfback for Frisby and strong-running backrower Caleb Timu will debut from the bench but the boldest of calls is uniting new Wallaby squad member Lukhan Tui, 20, and Izack Rodda, 20, as a young gun lock pairing.

Stiles was delighted that uncapped trio Eto Nabuli, Tui and Hunt were included in the Wallabies squad for this month’s three Tests.

“These three are all having their best seasons in different ways,” Stiles said.

“Karmichael has been absolutely abrasive with his play and is defending exceptionally well (in the centres).

“It says most about him that when he’s not been there it’s had a massive effect on the side.

“Lukhan was probably not on many people’s radar at all for a Wallabies jersey this year.

“Look closely at his performances and you’ll see a very big 119kg body with athletic ability who ball-carries, jumps, pushes and has a very big future.”

Hunt was delighted to win his Wallabies call-up and his performances finally mean he deserves it.

“It’s a huge honour for me and my family and when you are selected in any Wallabies or Kangaroos squad it comes as a surprise because there is so much talent for national teams,” Hunt said.

Hunt said he didn’t see Israel Folau as a roadblock to his Wallabies ambitions because both are at their best at fullback, not when positional switches or a super sub role are possible.

“We’ve got a lot of history, playing with each other and against other in different codes, and it would be nice to get in the same team,” Hunt said.

“It’s been done before and Cheik (coach Michael Cheika) is one to look outside the box.

“Obviously, I’ve got no preference when it comes to the national team … I just want to win a jersey.”
