Warren Buffett has long said that short-termism is bad for companies, but many didn’t seem to concur last year.
Companies on the S&P 500 issued quarterly earnings guidance 444 times in 2017, the most since 2008, according to a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence released on Thursday.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Last week, the world was riveted by the successful rescue of a youth soccer team as they and their coach were pulled out of a flooded cave in Thailand. The team had been stranded on a narrow rock shelf in the dark for two weeks, the way out blocked by turbid stormwater. The rescue involved far more than a few divers putting on gear and heading into the cave—it required a tremendous amount of technical skill and posed extreme danger.
But why, exactly, was it so dangerous? And what would it feel like to dive in those kinds of conditions?
I’m a professional diver with 16 years of dive experience, including safety diving and cave diving, and I have trained numerous scuba instructors. I also work full-time in a safety diving role, so answering the first question from a technical perspective is easy enough. The short answer is that all cave diving is dangerous (we’ll dig into why below).

Logan Garbarini models the 2×2 mm sensor that monitors ingested fluids and transmits information wirelessly. (credit: Fio Omenetto, Tufts University)
With this latest wearable gadget, you could really sink your teeth into tracking your diet and health.
A tiny tooth-mounted sensor can wirelessly transmit radio frequency data about the foods you’re noshing, reporting on sugar, salt, and alcohol in real-time. The creators, led by biomedical engineer Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University, hope that the dental device will someday help consumers and researchers make “conclusive links between dietary intake and health.” They report their prototype in a study that will be published next week in the journal Advanced Materials.
Omenetto’s team has long been working on such radio frequency sensors—ones for the skin, brain, and surgical implants. It made sense to move to the mouth, Omenetto tells Ars. “There are a plethora of markers in the mouth that… are very relevant to our health states,” he said. But the team was in talks with the nutrition researchers at Tufts that they thought “’gee, wouldn’t it be great if you could track your diet.’”

Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown announced one of the most ambitious electric vehicle (EV) incentive plans in the country. Colorado’s Governor John Hickenlooper also announced plans to improve infrastructure for battery-powered cars last week. Although EVs are still less than 1 percent of the total US passenger fleet, the two announcements show that state leaders are thinking about a second phase of EV rollout, as federal incentives are projected to run out for some automakers but climate change concerns grow increasingly urgent.
In California last week, Brown signed an Executive Order directing the state to adopt policies that could result in 5 million EVs on the road by 2030. That goal replaces an October 2016 goal put forward by Brown targeting 1.5 million EVs on California’s roads by 2025.
California has aggressive emissions goals and has been one of the major champions of renewable energy buildout. But the state’s transportation profile is still excessively reliant on gas and diesel. According to the Governor’s Office, transportation makes up 50 percent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Making healthier lifestyle choices could reduce the risk of cancer by up to a third, claimed scientists from Cardiff University.
Popular New Year’s resolutions – including maintaining a healthy diet, exercising more regularly and limiting alcohol intake – could help to ward off cancer, they said.
The scientists urged people to stick by their resolutions, as a healthy lifestyle has many benefits – not just a reduction in cancer risk.
More than 350,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year.
“The take-home message is that healthy behaviours can have a truly tangible benefit,” said leader of the research, Professor Peter Elwood.
“A healthy lifestyle has may benefits additional to cancer reduction – it costs nothing, has no undesirable side effects…. and is better than any pill.”
The scientists analysed 500,000 individuals’ behaviour and lifestyle choices as part of the study.
They identified their healthy behaviours, and compared them to the risk of cancer over several years.
Combining all of the healthy lifestyle choices together would reduce the risk of cancer by up to a third, they revealed.
Each healthy behaviour – regular exercise or a healthy diet, for example – lowered the risk of cancer by about eight per cent.
Now, the scientists want to find the very best lifestyle choices, and to create realistic recommendations to lower the risk of cancer.
“Perhaps the advice to take up one additional healthy behaviour is the most acceptable message for most subjects,” said Elwood.
More than 160,000 people died from cancer in the UK in 2014, said Cancer Research UK.
Almost half of all cancer cases are preventable, it added.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed that eating more wholegrain foods could lower the risk of colon cancer.
Wholegrain are packed full of fibre, which is important in lowering the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, according to the British Nutrition Foundation.

For the past few days I’ve augmented my reality at work, adding virtual displays to my office so that, while wearing a special headset, I can do things like type e-mails and read news and tweets without taking up real estate on my small laptop. I’ve brought virtual objects to my desk, too, like a little pile of logs burning in a charming, heat-free fire.
I did all this with the Meta 2 headset, a $ 1,495 device from Meta, a Silicon Valley startup that is one of a handful of companies trying to bring augmented reality to the mass market (its founder, Meron Gribetz, was named one of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 in 2016). The Meta 2, which is intended for developers, needs to be connected to a beefy computer in order to work, but it’s about half the price of Microsoft’s HoloLens device (also still aimed just at developers), has a larger field of view, and also produces very good-looking 3-D images in real environments.
It sounds pretty cool to add digital elements to the real world, right? It’s something I’ve been writing about, testing, and looking forward to for years now. Sadly, while I wish I could tell you that the desktop of the future is just around the corner, truthfully, it’s at least several blocks away, if not even farther out.
Since I’m curious about how augmented reality could be used for a regular computer-heavy work day, I concentrated on Meta’s Workspace demo app. I imagined using hand gestures to open lots of Web browser windows and placing them all around me, letting YouTube videos play in the background, pulling up a giant Twitter feed, and writing e-mails, all in AR. I figured I’d place all these things around me, interacting with them as needed while continuing to work on the laptop, too.
That’s not exactly how it turned out.
The biggest problem I had was with the app freezing. Many, many times, after a few minutes of use, an object that I was interacting with in Workspace would suddenly stick in front of my face, moving around with me no matter how I turned my head. I tried recalibrating the headset, restarting the app, changing the lighting, and even moving to a new room (in fact, I tried several different work spaces and desks). With assistance from Meta’s tech support, I got a newer version of the SDK; that improved the issue somewhat, but it remained a problem.
When it did work, images looked good. Workspace uses a bookcase-like visualization for its application launcher, with 3-D app icons placed neatly on shelves that you pull out to open. It’s very cool to open a browser window, start watching a video, pause it, and then turn your head to turn your head to concentrate on something else; after all, you can always turn back to it later on.
Meta has a lot of good ideas about how we should interact with virtual elements. Hand gestures aren’t hard to figure out — to grab, say, a virtual Batman figure and move it, you hold your open palm in front of it, facing Batman, and when you see a closed circle appear on the back of your hand you make a fist, move the object where you want, and then open your fist. The same kind of gesture works for opening applications. And you can enlarge an object by first going through these grabbing steps with both hands on an object, and then stretching your fists outward.
At the risk of sounding like a wimp, however, I found these kinds of interactions and others—like poking to try to select a link, for instance — quickly tiring (something I’ve also noticed with the “air tap” gesture Microsoft uses with its AR headset, HoloLens). For the most part, it was easier to just use a wireless mouse and keyboard to click things.
I also found that the headset, which weighs a bit over a pound, was too heavy for me to wear for more than 25 minutes or so at a time without getting a headache. If you’re interested in using an AR headset for specific, limited tasks, like viewing a 3-D model to get a more realistic sense of it than you can on a flat screen, this wouldn’t be a problem; if you want to make it an integrated part of your work day, though, the weight may make it impossible.
Getty ImagesAnother pain point that crept up on me: I realized that if I wasn’t trying to look at an AR object but at a colleague who walked in or at my (now seemingly old-fashioned) computer monitor, I had to shift my gaze below the headset’s clear visor to get an unobstructed view. This made it hard to switch tasks; I’m not sure how Meta can fix the problem without redesigning the visor’s shape.
When the Meta 2 didn’t work as I wanted it to, I reminded myself that I was using demo software and a not-yet-consumer-ready headset. Still, I got irritated, because I wanted it to work.
I’m tired of waiting for a seamless AR experience that’s not limited to a smartphone; I want to believe the vision Gribetz shared with me about a year and a half ago, when he said he imagines that within five years (so, by roughly mid-2021) AR headsets will be simplified to a “nearly invisible” strip of glass over the eyes.
At this point, I’m skeptical about the timeline, but I think it’s possible in the not-too-distant future. I hope the software being created to make these experiences amazing will get there, too.

An amendment to the Republican tax bill touted as a blow to hedge-fund managers isn’t going to affect most of them.
Earlier this week, Republican Representative Kevin Brady, chairman of the House tax-writing panel, offered to make changes to the rules on carried interest, a tax provision that largely benefits private-equity funds and other investors that hold their investments for more than one year. President Trump and his then-competitor Hillary Clinton both called to ending carried interest during their campaigns.
Brady’s amendment raises the threshold on what can qualify as a long-term investment and be taxed at a lower rate. He wants investment managers to have to hold onto something for three years before the can get the benefit, up from one year now. The Ways and Means Committee, which he chairs, tacked on the amendment to the tax bill Monday.
In an interview with CNBC on Monday, Brady said increasing the holding limit “makes sure you don’t have the giant hedge funds sort of spinning in and out of that…It puts [carried interest] back to its original intent, which is to reward over long term holdings, those who put skin in the game and work to make the skin in the game better.”
But carried interest actually doesn’t apply to most hedge funds. In a statement from the Ways and Means committee, which Brady chairs, a spokesperson said: “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will encourage and reward long-term investment while also applying equally to all sources of growth capital – no matter if that investment is provided by hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, or otherwise.”
Currently, hedge-fund, private-equity, real estate managers and other investors like venture capitalists qualify for the lower capital gains rate if they hold an investment for one year. Those capital gains are then taxed at a maximum 23.8%, compared to a top rate of 43.4%. This is a huge tax break for the Wall Streeters who qualify.
Already, few hedge funds benefit from the current carried interest rules. The majority – 62% – hold their investments for less than one year, according to data from eVestment. And only a relatively small number of hedge funds would be caught up in Brady’s amendment if passed. Only 15% report holdings for more than two years, according to eVestment.
Brady’s rule also would not affect the vast majority of private equity managers. The average holding period for private equity funds this year is 5.3 years – more than two years above Brady’s limit, Preqin data shows. Seventy-seven percent of private equity deals are held for more than three years, meanwhile, according to Preqin.
Preqin.
If anything, the current carried interest rules are most likely to help private equity funds – not hedge funds – since only 3% hold their positions for less than a year, according to Preqin.
“Three years is likely to be ineffective,” said Steve Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
As for venture capital, since 2000, 52% of venture-capital positions have been held for more than three years, according to data from PitchBook.
Talk about carried interest in regards to Wall Streeters is irrelevant given there’s another provision in the proposed GOP tax bill, on pass-throughs, which could cut fund managers’ taxes by huge amounts, according to Josh Bivens, research director at the Economic Policy Institute. The proposed rule would allow businesses to cut their top tax rates from 39% to about 25% by reorganizing how they’re structured, Bivens said.
To be sure, Brady isn’t the only politician to confuse who is affected by carried interest. In a letter Wednesday to the Senate Committee on Finance, Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin wrote: “This change will not affect the majority of partnership investments, which are longer than three years.”
But, she pointed to “wealthy and powerful hedge fund managers” in calling to end carried interest.
