Those stickers on gadgets that say you’ll void your warranty if they’re removed? You’ve probably come to expect them whenever you purchase a new device. The FTC has just made clear, however, that those warranty notices are illegal when it fired off warning letters to six companies that market and sell automobiles, mobile devices and video game consoles in the US. It didn’t mention which automakers and tech corporations they are, but since the list includes companies that make video game consoles, Sony and Microsoft could be two of them.

Under the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which the commission cited in its letter, companies can’t put repair restrictions on their products unless they provide the parts or services for free or receive a waiver from the FTC. Thomas B. Pahl, Acting Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement:

“Provisions that tie warranty coverage to the use of particular products or services harm both consumers who pay more for them as well as the small businesses who offer competing products and services.”

Since warranty stickers are a common sight on popular consumer electronics, like say, the PS4 and various phones, it was pretty unclear whether the law covers products much cheaper than cars. As Motherboard noted, though, the letters made it crystal that it also covers electronic devices, so long as they cost more than $ 15.

The FTC asked the six companies to review their warranty notices and make sure that they don’t “state or imply that warranty coverage is conditioned on the use of specific parts of services.” It will then review the companies’ websites after 30 days, warning the letters’ recipients that “failure to correct any potential violations may result in law enforcement action.”

When Snapchat and Instagram introduced Giphy stickers for Stories, they expected to offer PG-rated GIFs that even their young patrons can use. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned: both platforms have disabled the feature after users discovered an extremely racist GIF that says “N—- Crime Death Counter — Keep Cranking Bonzo, the Numbers Just Keep on Climbing!” among Giphy’s offerings. Since the sticker was first discovered on Snapchat, the ephemeral messaging app yanked it first. A spokesperson told TechCrunch that it disabled the feature while it waits “for Giphy’s team to take a look at it.”

People found the same thing on Instagram shortly after, and the social network decided to follow suit. Its spokesperson echoed Snapchat’s statement, telling TechCrunch that it has “stopped [its] integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue.” Snapchat has poor track record when it comes to racial sensitivity — it released racist image filters more than once — but the fact that the sticker is also available on Instagram makes this a Giphy issue.

Giphy’s community guidelines says it doesn’t allow anything that contains Hate Speech, but it looks like at least one fell through the cracks. A spokesperson told us the image made its way to the platforms due to a bug in its content moderation filters. The online GIF database has since fixed the issue and is currently reviewing every sticker it offers by hand:

“A user discovered an offensive GIF sticker in our library, and we immediately removed it per our content guidelines.

After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers. We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library.

The GIPHY staff is also further reviewing every GIF sticker by hand and should be finished shortly.

We take full responsibility for these recent events and sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended.”

Snapchat is getting a massive dose of GIFs from today with the news that the app will be integrating with Giphy’s gargantuan library of GIFs.

Now when you take a photo or video, you’ll be able to add a funky GIF sticker to your creation, which you can scale to size according to your preferences.

Giphy already has a number of big-name technology integrations under its belt, including the mighty Facebook which has offered support for Giphy GIFs for several years. Giphy has raised north of $ 150 million in funding, and was last valued at around $ 300 million, which isn’t bad for a GIF search platform.

Snap has announced a number of updates recently, including new audience analytics for brands and celebrities, while it opened its marketing API for all developers to use. However, the most contentious update of late has been Snapchat’s redesign which seeks to make a clearer distinction between your Snapchat friends and professional content creators. The update has caused considerable upset among Snapchatters who have campaigned the company to revert to the previous design, however CEO Evan Spiegel recently confirmed that the redesign is going nowhere.

With that in mind, Snap announced today that it will soon be rolling out Tabs to the Discover and Friends pages within Snapchat, to help users sort through friends’ stories and group chats, as well as subscriptions for professional content creators.

Looks like this is the weekend of Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ leaks. We already know what the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ look like, their specs, and other details, before they’re officially unveiled on February 25 at Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. Thanks to SamCentral, however, we’re also learning about possible included features, including Intelligent Scan, 3D stickers, and a new camera mode called Tag Shot.

The information comes in the form of an APK teardown of the most recent Settings app from the latest Android Oreo beta for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The teardown includes a bunch of strings detailing the aforementioned features. They could arrive as an update for the S8, S8+, and Note8, but are also likely included out of the box for new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ owners.

Intelligent Scan

The strings reveal that Intelligent Scan “combines face and iris scanning to improve accuracy and security even in low or very bright light.” The above video will likely be included as an explainer when you’re setting up the feature.

Intelligent Scan isn’t meant to replace anything — face scanning and iris scanning will still be available as separate options. There are multiple strings that note face unlock, iris unlock, and Intelligent Scan can’t be used at the same time, and that disabling one also disables the other two.

Intelligent Scan looks to be a replacement for entering a password, inputting a PIN, or drawing a pattern, though you will still be required to set up at least one of those as a more reliable alternative. The feature would be able to unlock your phone as soon as the screen turns on, without requiring you to swipe first.

The strings also suggest that you will be able to use Intelligent Scan not just to unlock your phone, but also to verify your identity in apps and sign into websites. Interestingly, none of the strings mention a fingerprint reader.

3D stickers and Tag shot

Depth-sensing editing will apparently let you add stickers or images to pictures that were taken with dual cameras, and then adjust the depth of the stickers or images. Tag shot lets you take pictures and tag them with the current location and weather information.

Tag shot seems neat, but Samsung includes an important warning:

This camera mode will attach, embed, and store geographical location data and weather information within each picture that you take. Use caution when you send, share, distribute, transmit, or copy these pictures since they contain information about where the picture was taken.

Other strings mention features called Smart stay and Smart rotation. The former already exists in the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8, keeping the screen on while you’re looking at it by using the front camera to detect your face, while the latter was available in older Galaxy S models and hasn’t been seen since. The string suggests it could make a comeback, or at least that Samsung is testing its viability.

Fans of the Serie A club have avoided a stadium ban for the incident on October 22, which saw a cluster of supporters post up stickers of Anne Frank wearing the shirt of their rivals Roma.

However, the club, which currently sit third in the league, will have to pay €50,000 after the Italian Football Federation deemed the actions of at least 13 fans as having “a clear anti-Semitic intent, constituting discriminatory behavior.”

According to the disciplinary tribunal, chaired by Cesare Mastrocola, the stickers of the Holocaust victim were designed to “incite racial hatred” and mock rival fans. Lazio shares the Stadio Olimpico with bitter rivals Roma.

During the tribunal, it was acknowledged that the adhesives were hidden by fans on entry into the stadium, and were found by cleaning staff in the south stand of the Stadio Olimpico the day after a home match against Cagliari last year. Some thirteen ultras received bans because of the incident.

Extracts of Anne Frank’s famous diary were subsequently read out at Italian stadiums following the incident, while the football team players donned supportive t-shirts of the murdered Holocaust diarist.

“The President of the SS Lazio, Claudio Lotito, has decided that the team will take to the field, during the pre-match warm-up, at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara of Bologna with an image of Anne Frank … as evidence of the club’s commitment in combating all forms of racism and anti-Semitism,” read a club statement on October 24, 2017.

Google’s push to bring Augmented Reality to the masses hit a big milestone today with the launch of the “AR Stickers” app. Google has been doing Augmented Reality for some time now with the hardware-packed Project Tango devices, but AR Stickers is the first app in Google’s new AR strategy, which revolves around ARCore. ARCore is a reworked augmented reality framework that can do many of the Tango AR tricks but without all the extra hardware.

AR Stickers is out now in the Play Store for the Pixel 1 and Pixel 2. The app is a new mode in the Google Camera that allows you to drop various 3D characters into the camera feed. ARCore will map out the nearest horizontal plane, like a floor or table, and ground the characters in real life. You can move the camera around, take pictures, and record video.

After catching up with iOS, Google’s keyboard app for Android is now racing ahead, courtesy of an update that packs 40 additional languages (including Japanese), and built-in sticker packs. Although Google already has a keyboard for non-Latin script languages, it’s not forcing you to adopt Gboard, as noted by 9to5Google. Instead, you’ll need to manually configure the Android app for a new language.

For the uninitiated, Gboard puts Search right in the keyboard. And, it also adds GIFs, emoji-centric tools (including type and scrawl to search), and glide and voice typing to the mix — which may make you kick your other keyboards to the curb.

With the latest update, Gboard now boasts 120 languages in total. Plus, you get access to four sticker packs by default (previously Gboard only included stickers if Google’s Allo messaging app was installed) — so you never have to use words again.
