M. Evan Corcoran, a once little-known, low-profile defense lawyer, has emerged in recent months as a key figure in the ongoing Mar-a-Lago raid saga as one of Donald Trump's most recent legal hires.
Corcoran joined the embattled former president's legal team in April — Trump offered Corcoran the job without ever having met him, according to The Washington Post — and quickly entrenched himself in his client's myriad legal troubles.
But Corcoran himself has become headline fodder in the aftermath of the FBI's August 8 raid on Trump's South Florida residence, during which agents seized 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked top secret, from the former president's residence and private club.
A former federal prosecutor turned white collar criminal defense attorney, Corcoran is a partner at the Baltimore law firm Silverman, Thompson, Slutkin & White. According to his webpage on the site, Corcoran represented an insurance company in a $ 4 billion insurance coverage case stemming from the World Trade Center collapse, and defended corporate officials in the Justice Department's cartel investigations.
The lawyer apparently made a name for himself in complex business litigation and government enforcement actions before becoming ensnared in the legal woes of Trumpworld.
Corcoran joined Trump's legal team with prior experience representing bombastic figures.
Most notably, Corcoran represented Steve Bannon, former chief strategist for the Trump administration, in his contempt of Congress case. Earlier this summer, A jury in Washington, DC, found Bannon guilty of the charges against him, despite Corcoran's appeal that the case was unjustly fueled by politics.
Corcoran found himself defending Bannon after nearly taking a top role in the same US attorney's office that would later go on to prosecute the War Room host.
In early 2020, Corcoran was in line to become the second-ranking official in the federal prosecutor's office under Tim Shea, a top Trump-era Justice Department official whom then-Attorney General William Barr had appointed as the acting US attorney in Washington. Shea arrived as an outsider and turned to Corcoran, a law school friend who had served as a federal prosecutor in the office in the 1990s, for the role of first assistant US attorney, according to people familiar with the offer.
But, within months, Shea was forced out of the US attorney role amid outcry over the Justice Department leadership's interventions in the prosecutions of Roger Stone and former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn, ultimately ruining Corcoran's would-be return to the office.
Beyond his experience with Bannon, Corcoran also waded into the world of the Capitol riot, representing the longtime Capitol police officer who was indicted on charges of obstructing the DOJ's investigation into the siege, as well as defending a Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty last year to participating in the riot.
Now Corcoran finds himself defending perhaps the most notorious legal client the country has seen in recent history.
A person familiar with Corcoran's interaction with Trump told The Post last month that the former president offered his newfound attorney the job without ever meeting him after being introduced via a conference call by another Trump advisor.
Corcoran has since found himself embroiled in Trump's most recent legal drama and could theoretically be implicated in the mess, as he and another Trump lawyer, Christina Bobb, both communicated with the DOJ during the months-long effort by government officials to retrieve boxes of classified documents from Trump's resort.
Corcoran did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

"Fox & Friends" host Steve Doocy is the latest media ally of former President Donald Trump to call him out over the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago.
During a Wednesday episode of the show, Doocy asked South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, another Trump ally, for her take on the Mar-a-Lago raid — but not before wondering aloud why Trump didn't hand over the documents to the government and instead took them to Florida home.
"Well, ultimately it comes down to — why did he have all that secret stuff at Mar-a-Lago?" Doocy asked.
He referenced Trump's claim about declassifying the files through a standing order and pointed out that this defense didn't hold up as the supposed move was also "news to the agencies that those documents belong to."
"He had, apparently, three classified documents in his desk," Doocy said, referring to the DOJ's court filing on the raid.
Doocy also referred to a photo released by the DOJ of the top-secret documents found at Mar-a-Lago.
"It shows five yellow folders marked 'top secret,' and another one with that says 'secret SCI' which means 'sensitive compartmentalized information,'" Doocy said. "Those are the biggest secrets in the world."
Noem attempted to defend Trump, calling for more transparency in the DOJ's investigation. However, Doocy sidestepped her argument and stated: "I don't think any President has ever carted off that many documents to their house after they left the presidency."
Doocy is just one of many members of Rupert Murdoch's media empire who appear to have shifted their stance on supporting Trump in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Fox News host Eric Shawn asked aloud during a live broadcast if Trump could have tried to "sell or share" classified information with Russia or Saudi Arabia.
In July, Trump also expressed his unhappiness with "Fox & Friends," a talk show he was known to do nearly weekly calls with during his presidency. In a Truth Social post, he called the talk show "terrible" and said it had "gone to the dark side" after Doocy questioned his poll numbers.
These rumblings from Fox News hosts may signal a shift in Murdoch's empire's attitude toward Trump. This week, for one, the former president raged against the Murdoch-owned New York Post over an opinion piece it published titled "Republicans are lucky to have Mitch McConnell: Trump's gripes are beyond ridiculous."
The Post also denounced Trump in an editorial piece in July, calling him "unworthy to be this country's chief executive again." Additionally, the Wall Street Journal — another Murdoch-owned publication — called Trump "The President Who Stood Still on Jan. 6" while praising former Vice President Mike Pence.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating whether Trump broke three federal laws, including the Espionage Act, by keeping classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. The agency removed 11 sets of classified documents — some of which were marked top secret and concerned nuclear weapons, according to The Washington Post — from the property while executing a search warrant on August 8.

Appearing via video link on Saturday’s BBC Breakfast, Steve Backshall surprised one of his biggest fans, young conservationist Aneeshwar Kunchala, who appeared alongside his dad. Although, when hosts Jon Kay and Rachel Burden were trying to conduct the interview, things took an unexpected turn. As broadcaster Steve spoke with Aneeshwar about his favourite animals, his toddler son got a bit jealous and tried to get his attention. In a bid, to get involved Steve’s son climbed up onto his lap and gatecrashed the interview.
Just as presenter Jon Kay was asking Steve what he thought about Aneeshwar’s passion, Steve’s young son came into shot.
“I think one of the most exciting things, right now – this period in history – is that we’ve got this new wave of young activists and I’ve got one at my feet right now, actually,” Steve explained as he pulled his son on to his lap.
Jon and Rachel laughed as they saw the funny side of the mishap, although, poor Steve stepped in to apologise.
“I’m sorry about that,” he continued. “That wasn’t planned.”

Continuing with the interview, Steve added: “I think YouTube and social media has such a powerful part to play in this new wave of activism.
“He is right at the perfect time, the perfect place and it’s standing up to say, ‘I want to make a difference, I want to make the planet a better place’. It does my heart proud.”
Steve went on to apologise again as his son continued to make noises over the interview.
Jon bowed his head as he tried not to laugh, while Rachel tried to continue with their questions.
She asked: “Aneeshwar, I wonder if there is anything or anywhere that you want Steve Backshall to explore, where would you go if you could go anywhere in the world?”
Aneeshwar asked his hero about the insect Tardigrades, and just as Steve went to answer, his son gatecrashed the interview again.
“I’m covered in children,” Steve laughed. “I’m sorry.”
“Aneeshwar, you probably can’t see what’s happening at the moment,” Jon weighed in.
“But, Steve’s own child is getting jealous of all the attention that he’s showing to you I think.
“It’s basically Steve Backshall, childcare on BBC One right now.”
Taking to Twitter after the segment, viewers luckily saw the funny side of the interview, with many commenting on how adorable Anesshwar is.
One tweeted: “Full credit to Steve, one child on top of him while advising another on Zoom on live TV.”
Another joked: “@SteveBackshall what a fantastic interview on BBC Breakfast inspiring children to be environmentalists while wrangling your own.”
While one added: “Best feature I’ve seen in a long time on BBC Breakfast. When conservative turns into Steve Backshall daycare.”
“Steve Backshaw getting photobombed by his own kid,” another tweeted.
Another quizzed: “Is this interview really going on?”
BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
One replied to the original comment: “Could it be he was undercover at the time as a PC or DC? As that would explain for the lack of Sergeant Stripes.
“Adding to this theory he is wearing a police jacket like a PC would wear as it is very rare for a detective to be wearing one of those in the show,” they said.
But someone else disagreed: “Steve’s way too scrappy for undercover work – last time they left him unsupervised he f****d a witness and messed about with Lindsey. Would be an interesting twist for this season though!”
Another did some more digging: “I have just looked it up and that’s not Steve’s collar numbers as his ones are 1561 and the one is the photo is 3947,” begging the question as to whether this is even his vest.

John Krasinski’s mission to spread some good news during these difficult times turned out to be great fun for fans of The Office.
On March 25, Krasinski invited his followers on Twitter to pass along some feel-good stories. Come Sunday night, the star of Amazon’s Jack Ryan series served up a “Some Good News” report via YouTube, in which he recounted some of the stories he had heard — including his own interview with Courtney “Coco” Johnson, the Pasadena teen who was surprised with a “reverse” welcome home parade after undergoing her final chemo treatment.
Midway through delivering “Some Good News” (logo courtesy of his and wife Emily Blunt’s two daughters!), Krasinski threw to correspondent Steve Carell, and the two former Office mates proceeded to mark the 15th anniversary of the hit NBC comedy’s premiere by revisiting not just Krasinki’s former mop top but also several of their most favorite scenes, including when Jim dressed up as Dwight and when Michael unveiled his brand-new, itty-bitty plasma-screen television set.
Press play above to hear “Some Good News” from the week that was, as well as flash back to more of Krasinski and Carell’s favorite Office memories.

This week on Hawaii Five-0, in the CBS series’ penultimate hour, everyone was wondering, “What’s wrong with McGarrett?” And by episode’s end, Danny had the answer.
But first, meet Lincoln Cole!
After Steve accepts hand-delivery of what is later revealed to be a coded letter/cypher from Doris, we cut to a gang of goons pushing a woman and her wee kid into her home. They just robbed a bank, where one of their guys got shot, so they need a place to lay low. Luckily for the lady, the busboy (played by MacGyver alum Lance Gross) from the diner she and her son were just at shows up to return a lost trinket. The busboy gleans that something is amiss, and moments after bidding the woman adieu, he comes barging in through the back, whaling on the assorted robbers. One gets away, though — and the busboy, too, vanishes once the mother turns her back to call the cops.
Having caught this case — because “there’s always another case” — Danny tracks down Steve at his father’s grave. It’s been almost 10 years since the elder McGarrett died, while Steve himself has been through quite a tough year, with Joe, Doris and all. Producing the cypher, Steve grumbles, “Last thing I need right now is another mystery.” So they report to the scene of the skirmish with the robbers, getting the download from Tani and Quinn on the remarkably skilled busboy who saved the woman and child. Back at HQ, Five-0 realizes that said busboy was living under an assumed identity. It’s only when Adam scouts out the guy’s mailing address and finds a toothbrush/DNA that they learn who he actually is: Lincoln Cole, a Marine gunnery sergeant with the FAST (anti-terrorist) team. And, most curiously, one who went AWOL after being bestowed with a Purple Heart following a big mission.
Steve and Junior pay a visit to Sergeant Major Phillips (aka blink-and-you-missed-him guest star Chuck Norris), who they know Cole had called earlier in the day. Phillips plays dumb, but Junior marches right past into his home, where he spies Cole escaping out the back. A chase ensues, during which Cole and McGarrett trade blows, strikes, kicks, what have you. Junior breaks things up with a gunshot, after which Cole gets hauled into the rendition room at HQ.
Cole stays mum, but Steve eventually gets through to him a bit, recognizing the guilt he probably feels for having lost men during the mission that branded him a hero. Cole confesses that he feels terrible guilt, having let his zeal for a big “win” lure his squad into an obvious ambush.
When masked men force a ransom video onto the TV airwaves, demanding Cole in trade for the now-kidnapped woman and child from before, McDanno debate using Cole to flush out the baddies. Steve calls the kidnapper, Hector, to report that they have Cole in custody but are about to turn him over to the MPs/prison. That’s not good enough, for Hector, though. MPs do in fact show up to claim Cole, and Steve turns him over. Cole, though, somehow escapes the transport and makes a beeline for the meet-up. There, he ensures the woman and child’s safety before turning himself over to Hector, who then promptly puts a gun to Cole’s head… before getting zinged by Junior’s sniper rifle. With all of Five-0 emerging from the nearby brush, a shootout ensues, and eventually every baddie is taken down. ”I think this guy might be crazier than you,” Danny says to Steve of Cole’s own capacity for derring-do.
Afterward at HQ, Steve informs Cole that he is free to go — that the MPs are busy with the formal review, plus no one is in a hurry to bring charges against the war hero who just saved a woman and child. Cole in turn offers to call in a favor to help Steve decode the cypher on his desk. Danny then calls, and summons Steve for a tete a tete at their beach chairs. Steve at first tries to deflect, but Danny wants to have a serious conversation about what is affecting his longtime partner.
“Something changed…,” Steve admits, adding that he came to realize that for 10 years he has been “protecting everybody except myself.” Danny suggests he simply take a break, but Steve counters, “It’s more than that.” He at one point thought the restaurant (hey, remember that storyline?) would offer “balance,” so when it stalled, he got to thinking about other ways to have a normal life.
“Do you think you’re capable of being done?” asks Danny. “Maybe,” says Steve. With Five-0, he says, “I hit the ground running, and have been running ever since,” and now he is considering “time away to get perspective.” Danny suggests that New Jersey would be a fine place to gain such perspective! Steve at first defers, “It’d be full of people like you!” And yet… now he feels almost challenged to indeed get away to the Garden State.
Danny heads into the house to fetch more beers — only to find a masked man rifling through Steve’s office. A fight breaks out, a gunshot goes off, Steve races into the house, but the burglar has escaped, and Danny is merely a bit banged up. The thief was after the cypher, Steve surmises, but unwittingly made off with just the empty envelope it came in.
To be continued, during the April 3 series finale.
What did you think of “Part 1” of H50‘s series finale? Would you have welcomed Lincoln Cole as a new team member/leader, if there had been a Season 11?

The extent of Steve Carell‘s involvement in The Morning Show‘s forthcoming second season remains something of an open question. At the Television Critics Assoc. winter press tour on Sunday, Michael Ellenberg — one of the Apple TV+ drama’s EPs — told reporters that there was “no update” on contract talks with Carell, who plays disgraced former co-anchor Mitch Kessler.
Immediately following The Morning Show‘s Season 1 finale last month, showrunner Kerry Ehrin told THR, “We would like [Steve] to be back in Season 2,” adding, “It’s in the works, but it’s not a done deal yet. That’s all I can say. But I would very much like him to be and I think that continuing that story is actually important.”
Carell’s Mitch was fired from TMS after being accused of multiple #MeToo offenses. In Season 2, Ehrin said Mitch would “still be the same guy, he’s just going to have more awareness that he is not a good guy. But people don’t change completely overnight, even in a tragedy. People are so wired; we have all our habits and neurosis wired into us so deeply that you fall into your old habits of denial or making excuses. But it’s still about that struggle now of actually knowing the truth — that he did very, very bad things. It’s not about a comeback. It’s about something else.”

The Kelly Clarkson Show made its debut on Monday with an iconic moment straight out of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
As the hour opened, Steve Carell appeared on stage to introduce the singer/host with his infamous “Kelly Clarkson!” cry from the Judd Apatow movie. However, no chest hairs were harmed in the making of this scream.
“A very special thank you to my guest announcer Steve Carell,” Clarkson said following her performance of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” “When I signed on to this show, I was like, ‘Is it possible to get him to shout my name on the very first episode?’ and it happened! Like, what is my life? Yeah, he’s really nice.”
The daytime talker is one of several new syndicated shows hitting the airwaves: Tamron Hall and Judge Jerry also aired their first episodes today, while The Mel Robbins Show makes its bow next week. Additionally, RuPaul launched a three-week “test” run in June, with its longterm future TBD. (Check out our guide to all the newcomer offerings here.)

Emma Brooker’s (played by Alexandra Mardell) father passed away on Coronation Street a few weeks ago but she was left devastated when she learnt from her mum, he wasn’t her dad at all.
Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) suspected he could be her father after his relationship with Emma’s mother, former Corrie resident Fiona Middleton (Angela Griffin).
His suspicions were recently confirmed by Emma revealed she wanted nothing to do with her biological father.
She rejected Steve at her dad’s funeral but the taxi driver is set to stun his daughter with a big gesture that could change things.
When Emma learned the truth about Steve, she attacked him with the funeral flowers before storming off.
She shouted: “Why would you say that? Because you’re a horrible, selfish, hateful, selfish, mean, thoughtless, selfish, nasty little man. Leave me alone.”
Steve found her crying and tried to smooth things over but Emma refused to hear about the DNA to see if they were related.
“How did you manage to make something I didn’t think could be any worse so much worse?” she asked.
“I wish my mum had never met you. Go away, go away!”
However, as Emma continues to mourn her “dad”, Steve goes to extra lengths to help her out, which could repair their relationship.
He admits to Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) he feels protective of her when he watches James Bailey (Nathan Graham) flirt with her.
When Emma opens up about scattering her dad’s ashes at County’s ground, Steve gets a helping hand from James and his brother Michael (Ryan Russell) who all arrive at the ground to support her.
However, they are approached by the security guard who demands to know what they are up to.
Steve manages to win over the guard by pleading Emma’s case who allows them onto the pitch.
Raising a toast to Emma’s dad, she’s touched to discover that it was Steve’s idea to go to the football ground.
Emma’s decision to stay on the cobbles comes after Alexandra revealed she’d be sticking around as Steve’s daughter thanks to her renewed contract with the soap.
“I’ve just signed a new contract and I’m more than happy to stay for as long as they’ll have me,” she told the Daily Star.
“You’ve got people that have been in the show for decades, and I think you need to clock up at least five years before you feel any different,” she added.
Alexandra hopes to be part of the soap’s 60th anniversary next year but did not let on long her contract runs for.
Can this be the beginning of something new for Emma and Steve?
Coronation Street continues on Monday on ITV at 7.30pm.
Stranger Things season three introduced a number of new characters in its third season in the battle to defeat the Mind Flayer. One of the nicer surprises was the introduction of Robin Buckley (played by Maya Hawke), who played Steve Harrington’s (Joe Keery) Scoops Ahoy co-worker. Many viewers thought that a romance was blossoming between the characters in series three, but the actor has revealed in a new interview why she rallied against this.
Robin was one of the stand-out introductions in season three of Stranger Things.
Steve’s colleague at the Scoops Ahoy ice cream shop, she proved be be invaluable in helping to uncover the Russian operation going on underneath the Starcourt Mall.
The pair developed an unlikely friendship during the series, which some fans had initially thought was heading in a romantic direction.
However, when Steve declares his affection for her at the end of the season, Robin revealed that she is gay.
In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Robin actor Maya Hawke revealed that the creators had planned to end their story romantically.

According to Hawke, writers and creators the Duffer brothers had originally mapped out the scene were Steve reveals his feelings for Robin to end differently.
Fans of the series will remember that this was hinted at throughout, with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) repeatedly telling Steve that Robin was the perfect girl for him.
Hawke explained in the interview that around halfway through production on the series, her and her co-star Keery pushed back on the romantic storyline.
She said: “Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and Steve shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay.
“Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever.”

She explained that the show runners Matt and Ross Duffer were really receptive to her ideas, and they worked together to work out a new ending.
Hawke added: “The Duffer brothers and I, and [producer] Shawn Levy, had a lot of conversations throughout shooting and it wasn’t really until we were shooting episode four and five, I think, that we made the final decision.
“It was a collaborative conversation, and I’m really, really happy with the way that it went.”
The actor also went on to talk about how happy she was with how people responded to Robin and her storyline in the series.

This was especially because she was the first openly LGBTQ+ character in the Stranger Things series.
She said that she hoped that her story can help people “fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys”.
Many fans are hopeful that Robin will be back for a potential series four of the series.
This is something that Hawke herself is also anxious for, telling publication Consequence of Sound last month: “I wanna see her at the video store.
“So many of the great minds of the ‘80s and ‘80s filmmakers and creatives started out working in video stores, and as far as I know, that environment hasn’t really been explored on TV. I think that would be really fun.”
Stranger Things season 3 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
