FORMER Panthers star Greg Alexander will replace Peter Sterling as Freddie Fittler’s chief adviser with the Blues State of Origin team next year.

His role will involve team selections, training and team camps.

“There’s plenty of people out there who could do a good job as an adviser but Greg Alexander is a person I trust more than anyone,” Fittler said. “I’d trust him with my family. He’ll be hands on and involved in everything we do.”

Fittler and Alexander played two games together for the Blues in 1991.

Fittler will also have Phil Gould and Andrew Johns involved in some capacity.

WE love how Mitchell Pearce is backing himself by joining the Newcastle Knights. It would have been easier and more comfortable to link with a powerful club such as the Sharks or Sea Eagles. Instead, he’s signed on for four years to play at the rebuilding club.

IT could only happen in soccer in this country where its politics makes rugby league look like a walk in the park. All this rubbish about FFA administration threatens to overshadow the Socceroos’ qualification for Russia 2018 at a time when we have no national coach and seemingly no direction.

WE are hearing soccer boss David Gallop is putting together an interviewing panel to help quiz applicants for Ange Postecoglou’s old Socceroos gig. The panel is likely to include Mark Bresciano, Craig Moore and Mark Schwarzer.

FLANAGAN HEADS TRIO OF NO SHOWS

CRONULLA’s Shane Flanagan boycotted the annual NRL coaches’ conference, claiming the meetings are a waste of time.

Flanagan, Wayne Bennett and the Warriors’ Stephen Kearney were absent when the coaches gathered at NRL headquarters on Monday to discuss rule changes and other issues.

Asked why he didn’t go, Flanagan said: “Not after what they did to us at the end of the season ($ 30,000 fine). I had other things to do.

“We go and listen to Tony Archer tell us how good everything is going. No thanks.

“It’s the same old stuff every year. I was busy coaching the team.”

The NRL was disappointed Flanagan and Kearney took no part in the meeting.

However, Bennett’s absence was understandable considering his commitment to the English team in the build-up to last night’s World Cup final.

Even Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, who has been absent in previous years, went to the trouble of attending. Storm’s Craig Bellamy and the Cowboys’ Paul Green took part over the phone.

The consensus is that it was a flat meeting with little to be gained from it. We get the impression there will be more absentees next year.

TENSIONS AT THE EELS

WE keep hearing there is a clash at Parramatta Eels between coach Brad Arthur and star playmaker Corey Norman. It’s all being kept hush hush at the moment but we’ll be keeping an eye on developments.

There are other clubs still looking for a quality playmaker including Manly Sea Eagles and Cronulla Sharks who both missed out on Mitchell Pearce. Arthur obviously rates Norman highly as a player but there is a personality clash that is creating the drama.

STUMPED OVER SCOOP

QUESTIONS are being asked how Channel Nine missed the big cricket story at the Gabba last weekend when news broke that Jonny Bairstow had headbutted Cameron Bancroft in Perth.

Fox Sports reporter Neroli Meadows picked it up from the sledging on the Triple M sound-effects microphone and got the scoop.

Nine also has full access to the stump microphone but missed the yarn.

The network pays a squillion for exclusive cricket rights to broadcast the complete package and executives were not happy.

SO SORRY STEVE

WE almost survived another long year without need for a clarification or apology on these pages. Almost.

Last Sunday, I reported how cricket legend Steve Waugh had been removed from the SCG Trust along with four of his colleagues. Waugh did not return my phone calls. The office of Sports Minister Stuart Ayres refused to comment. The SCG Trust, however, said Waugh resigned of his own accord. We are more than happy to set the record straight.

BEAU’S BIG CUTBACK

BEAU Ryan’s future at Channel Nine is in the hands of lawyers. Ryan and his “consultant” Wayne Beavis recently met Nine executives and were told he would have a vastly reduced role on the Thursday night Footy Show in 2018 — and that he’d need to take a considerable pay cut on his contract that has two years to run.

Ryan was the highest-paid Footy Show personality on more than $ 500,000 a year.

He won’t be sitting on the panel as a regular.

The network has other plans for him in an interviewing role. Expect to see a lot more of Andrew Johns on the show.

Hayne’s strained relationship with Neil Henry could cost the Titans coach his job, with the club set to announce a decision on the pair’s future next week.

Sterling said Hayne, whose salary is estimated to be around $ 1.2 million a year, had been particularly disappointing this season.

“If I’m paying a player that much money, that comes with certain expectations,” Sterling told Triple M’s Dead Set Legends. “When you look at Jarryd and with that wage in mind, I need him to be in the game.”

Sterling said the 29-year-old former Eel was failing to have an influence on the game like the competition’s best fullbacks. “I’m talking Billy Slater, I’m talking James Tedesco, Tom Trbojevic, Darius Boyd. They are trying to get in there and win the game for their team as much as possible,” he said.

“There’s effort on effort, their body language is always really positive and that’s infectious among the team, I haven’t seen that from Jarryd this year.”

“I don’t know if Jarryd is the player he once was,” Sterling said. “It’s been a long time since he’s strung together any decent games in a row in the National Rugby League.”

Hayne’s former teammate Nathan Hindmarsh says he isn’t surprised by the enigmatic star’s rift with Neil Henry which may cost the Gold Coast coach his job.

Hindmarsh played with Hayne for nine NRL seasons at Parramatta, as well as at Test and State of Origin level.

Henry is on the verge of being sacked by the Titans over the feud with Hayne, according to Phil Rothfield at the Daily Telegraph

Asked if Hayne and Henry’s soured relationship was a surprise, Hindmarsh said: “No, not really”.

“He’s a different beast,” Hindmarsh told Fox Sports.

“Sometimes he can have the worst week at training and come out and have a blinder.

“Other weeks he can be on top of the world, chirpy, buzzy, jumping out of his skin, really good at training and then not have a really good game at all.

“The key for any coach with Haynsey is getting the best out of him week-in week- out, season after season.” Hindmarsh is hopeful the situation won’t lead the one-time NFL player to depart the NRL for another code.

“He’s a special player, he’s a talent and we’ve all seen what he can do on the field,” Hindmarsh said.

“He took the Eels to a grand final in 2009 off the back of his brilliance. “I’ve played with Haynsey and it can be frustrating at times.

“But at the end of the day he’s a gifted, talented player and I hope that if things don’t work out there at the Titans that we do see him playing in the NRL somewhere down the line.”

The Titans meet the Eels on Thursday night, but Hayne is in doubt with a hamstring injury.

“I hope Haynsey does turn out against the Eels,” Hindmarsh said. “If he does, he’ll have a blinder.”

LEAGUE legend Peter Sterling says he feels Canterbury is paying the price for its inability to alter its style to suit the changing NRL game.

The Bulldogs have crashed to third last on the NRL ladder, with only the Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights sitting below them.

Canterbury was destroyed by Penrith at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. The 38-0 defeat is the Dogs’ biggest losing margin of the season.

The Bulldogs were missing the experience of Josh Reynolds and James Graham, but Sterling says even if the stars were available, he would have expected the same outcome.

“A really poor performance, no Josh Reynolds and James Graham — I don’t think they would have made much of a difference,” Sterling told Triple M’s Deadset Legends.

“They are the second worst attacking team at this point in the season – that does speak volumes.

“That’s undeniable. Their game has not evolved for the last two, three, four seasons and they’ve been left behind in that department.”

But Des Hasler’s side still have half a season to play. Currently the Bulldogs’ start to 2017 is the worst start to a season by any Hasler-coached side.

The Bulldogs are coming off four straight defeats, and face the high-flying St George Illawarra Dragons on Monday at ANZ Stadium.

The Bulldogs have signed marquee names Kieran Foran and Aaron Woods for next season and handed Hasler another two-year contract, but 2018 is still a long way away.

Sterling says first thing’s first, Hasler must respond to the first real question of his ability in his 350-game coaching career.

“They are positive recruitments, but that’s a long way off,” Sterling said.

“You want to get something out of this season, and I don’t know whether they can make the changes.

“Des Hasler is a very smart coach, you don’t make finals football for 12 straight seasons, unless you’re an outstanding coach.

“This is his biggest test to date, what he can get out of his football team in the remaining second half of this season.”

Bulldogs fans took to social media to question the long-term future of Hasler at Belmore.

Many were angry that Hasler failed to attend a post-game event planned at the Canterbury League Club where he was to be grilled by members.

One fan has even started an online petition, calling for the head of the Canterbury coach.
