The latest Hawkeye casting news is pitch-perfect.

Hailee Steinfeld (the Pitch Perfect films, True Grit) has been offered the role of Kate Bishop in the Disney+ series based on Jeremy Renner’s Marvel Cinematic Universe character, our sister site Variety reports.

Kate Bishop is a member of the Young Avengers and the woman who becomes Hawkeye after Clint Barton (aka Renner’s character’s real identity) is the superhero no longer.

Steinfeld also is the star of the forthcoming Dickinson, the Apple TV+ period comedy in which the actress plays poet Emily Dickinson as she “audaciously explores the constraints of society, gender and family,” per the official series logline. Dickinson premieres this fall.

Launching Tuesday, Nov. 12 Stateside and rolling out globally over the next two years, a Disney+ subscription will cost $ 6.99 per month (or $ 69.99 for an annual pass; pricing varies outside the U.S.). The content will be ad-free. Series’ episodes will roll out weekly, as opposed to all at once.

Upon launch, the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian as well as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: Too Many Colons will make their premieres. The animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars will follow (in February 2020), as will Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Fall 2020) and Pixar’s Monsters at Work and Diary of a Female President (sometime in 2020).

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

‘Bumblebee’ Photo: Hailee Steinfeld Poses With Her Yellow Bug For The First ‘Transformers’ Spin-Off [Updated] https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-photo-hailee-steinfeld-poses-with-her-yellow-bug-for-the-first-transformers-spin-off-updated/ https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-photo-hailee-steinfeld-poses-with-her-yellow-bug-for-the-first-transformers-spin-off-updated/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 10:01:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-photo-hailee-steinfeld-poses-with-her-yellow-bug-for-the-first-transformers-spin-off-updated/ Bumblebee Transformers photo

Update: A new high resolution version of the image has been released and we’ve added it below.

There’s a section in the song “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” that describes everyone dancing “in the new old-fashioned way,” and now the upcoming Bumblebee Transformers spin-off movie is putting its own spin on the concept of something being new and old-fashioned at the same time. A fresh photo from the film has emerged that showcases the title Autobot hero in his old-fashioned form as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle…but it’s also new, because we haven’t seen that character as anything other than a Camaro in a live-action Transformers movie yet. (Just go with me on this.)

Take a look at the new photo below, which also includes another look at the film’s human star, played by Hailee Steinfeld.

This will be the first live-action Transformers spin-off movie, and since it’s set in the late 1980s, the fact that Bumblebee is in his original Beetle form – as he was in the original animated series from the same time period – is a cool little callback. This is the first “hero shot” of the character we’ve seen from the film, but we’ve known for a while that Bumblebee would be getting a retro refit this time around since photos of old Beetles emerged from the set this past summer.

Meanwhile, Hailee Steinfeld’s mechanic character Charlie Watson stands beside her newfound friend. She’s sporting a “1980s rock” vibe that goes along with our first look at her character, but this time she’s wearing a vest (which is decidedly less rockin’ than a Motorhead T-shirt). In any case, this photo raises an almost incalculable number of intensely important questions: What is she staring at in the distance? Is she getting in the car, or getting out? What song is blaring on Bumblebee’s radio at this exact moment? WE MUST KNOW. But seriously folks…Transformers fans desperate for a coherent entry in this franchise would probably love the answers to those questions.

Here’s the official synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee also stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, and  Gracie Dzienny, and it’s directed by Kubo and the Two Strings filmmaker Travis Knight. The movie arrives in theaters just over a year from now, on December 21, 2018.

Is it weird to feel pretty good about Bumblebee, the first Transformers spin-off and the start of what Paramount hopes will be a long and healthy franchise post-Michael Bay? The film is set to be directed by Travis Knight, the incredibly talented director behind Kubo and the Two Strings (one of the best films of last year) and now Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star.

Of course, the real star of Bumblebee would be the title character, the sometimes rambunctious robot warrior who tends to act as Optimus Prime’s right hand man in the core Transformers movies. However, every Transformers movie needs a human being to gawk at the robots and ask questions about what the hell is going on so the audience can follow the plot. Enter Steinfeld.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Steinfeld will play “a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school.” Exact plot details are unknown, but this casting seems to harken back to the original “a boy and his car” approach that drove the original 2007 Transformers movie. Or “a girl and her car,” in this case. Bumblebee is supposedly a prequel, so don’t take this as sign that everyone’s second favorite Autobot will survive Transformers: The Last Knight…although Bumblebee being on Earth before the events of the first film does muddy an already confusing timeline.

Steinfeld made her big screen debut in Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2010 western True Grit, where she stood toe-to-toe with some serious heavy-hitters and walked away with an Academy Award nomination for her trouble. Since then, she has acted steadily in all kinds of movies, dipping her toe into blockbuster waters with Ender’s Game, joining a popular franchise with Pitch Perfect 2, and proving that she’s still a powerhouse of an actress when she lands the right role with The Edge of Seventeen. The Transformers movies, for all of their mind-numbing inanity, have always had a strong track record when it comes to casting interesting and talented people (Mark Wahlberg is the exception to that rule). Steinfeld continues the trend beyond Michael Bay’s watch.

So let’s return to the question at the top of this article. Is it weird to feel good about another Transformers movie, particularly one that will move beyond Michael Bay and allow another filmmaker into the mix? I’m ready to be optimistic about this one. Knight, who was the CEO and lead animator at Laika Entertainment before making his directorial debut on Kubo, is a more soulful and sweeter filmmaker than Bay, whose crass and bombastic style has worn thin over the past decade. It’s time for Transformers to get some new blood – maybe Knight and Steinfeld can make this work.

Bumblebee is set to open on June 8, 2018.

Kiss of Death on Blu-ray

I’d been meaning to see this classic film noir since… oh, since the (frankly underrated) Barbet Schroeder remake was released over two decades ago. Its recent Blu-ray release from Twilight Time gave me the chance to finally fill that blind spot, and about damn time. Classic movies have a tendency to get reduced to a single moment or image, and this one is mostly remembered for the scene where a cackling Richard Windmark pushes an old pal’s wheelchair-bound mother down a flight of stairs. It’s a beautifully nasty bit, and Windmark is deliciously over-the-top throughout. But there’s more to this one than that, as desperate ex-con Victor Mature knocks off a jeweler and must weight his anti-snitch resolve against the notion of never seeing his kids. As with all good noir, it’s smoky and nihilistic, and the hard-boiled narration is a treat (and, subversively enough, is voiced here by a woman). But the third act is what really makes this one special, as Mature’s life is finally on the line, and director Henry Hathaway uses moody compositions and a marked lack of music to create a tone of genuine dread and fear. Trust me – don’t take as long as I did to see this one. — Jason Bailey, Film Editor

Hailee Steinfeld in The Edge of Seventeen

I was on a plane earlier this week, and decided — based on recommendations particularly about Hailee Steinfeld’s performance — to watch The Edge of Seventeen. Now, it’s hard to speak to the quality of the movie overall, because an airplane is perhaps the worst place to watch a movie if you’re aiming for some semblance of critical objectivity; it’s quite common to feel one’s tendency to cry at movies uncontrollably augmented on planes — though the cause hasn’t really been determined. And indeed, my time viewing The Edge of Seventeen on a tiny screen jiggling on occasion with turbulence was no exception. But I don’t think it was just the cabin pressure or sense of in-the-air liminality and isolation and anxiety that did it: a large part of it was Steinfeld’s ability to deliver an endlessly compelling performance with a character who’s so caught up in her own sense of self-pity and alienation that she actually creates a pitiful, alienated life for herself. While teenage angst has often been played with its share of eye-rolling, “ugh”-ing, and “mooooooom”-ing, Steinfeld steers her always-irked, always put-upon teen character away from annoyed-acting autopilot and goes deep into what makes her self-isolate. Hers is a familiar role, but what’s unfamiliar is the deep empathy and nuance with which Steinfeld — and writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig — approach it. Other critics who weren’t on planes seem to agree. — Moze Halperin, Senior Editor

Veep Season 6, Episode 5: “Chicklet”

As far as these picks posts go, I’ve been a bit of a Boy Who Cried Veep — so I apologize if I’m simply continuing to overuse this platform to heap praise upon my favorite comedy. But damn last Sunday’s episode was good, perhaps my favorite of the series thus far. The strength of this season is its window into so much of what we never saw on the show before: in many ways, it actually almost feels like a prequel than a continuation (despite being a year later than the previous season): it dives meticulously and uncomfortably into these characters’ personal lives and showing us exactly why the dysfunctional minutiae of their everyday made them such inept — and often completely callous — politicians.

“Chicklet” first gives viewers the pleasure of an even meaner Selina Meyer — she’s suffering from depression after her heart attack, so suddenly her mistreatment of her staff is augmented by existential woe. The episode also sees her finally making strides — along with Mike — on her stagnating memoir idea, which means peering into her own familial past and confronting the demons it holds. If you thought her post-presidency life couldn’t sink lower, this episode sees her and Mike drunkenly destroying her family barn with baseball bats — that is, before Selina drives a car into it. It’s a twisted comment on the types of upbringings that would lead a person to seek a position of ultimate power, and beneath its unremitting hilarity, it’s pretty unsettling. By the way, this episode might be Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ magnum opus. — Moze Halperin, Senior Editor

Patriothole, aka Clickhole

Clickhole is pretty much always genius — one day, someone will write an epic tome about how it evolved from being a decent but unremarkable Buzzfeed parody into being the id of the internet — but it’s outdone itself today with its transformation into… [sound of 21-gun salute] PATRIOTHOLE! The extreme end of American patriotism — and its mouthpiece, Breitbart — is already so self-evidently absurd that it’s hard to parody, but Clickhole rarely disappoints, and they’ve nailed this. Highlights: coal as “the patriotic vegetable that comes from mountains”, Ahmed the impossibly sexual Muslim abortion doctor, and…. this. Conservatism will probably get us all killed, but at least we’ll be laughing as we go. — Tom Hawking, Editor-in-Chief
