Microsoft’s stab at building a virtual reality ecosystem will enter an informal beta test starting November 15th. Next week the Windows 10 Mixed Reality SteamVR preview program will go live. If you have Windows 10 running on your machine, along with one of the Redmond-approved VR headsets you’ll be able to try it out for yourself according to Rolling Stone.
This will act as a sort of crossover piece of software that gives Windows Mixed Reality users access to some 60 VR apps from the Windows Store and the countless VR games available on Steam. There’s no timetable for when the full version will roll out to Windows just yet.

Enlarge / Only two base stations? P’shaw. Next year, SteamVR will let developers do way more with four. (credit: Valve)
Every major virtual reality platform has its pros and cons at this point, but one of SteamVR’s clear leads is space. Right now, owners of the HTC Vive can set up two of its infrared-powered “base stations” and move, dance, shoot, sculpt, and adventure around a maximum of 132 square feet—assuming you have that much to spare in your den or basement, anyway.
But as more commercial groups (from arcades to industrial design firms) bite on VR’s most extreme use possibilities, Steam’s VR design side has clearly been working to give them more extreme floor space to work with. On Tuesday, the company hinted at an eventual SteamVR 2.0 product by announcing quite a leap in scope: nearly 10 times the square footage.
The catch is that the entire SteamVR pipeline must be upgraded to take advantage of this jump, including new “SteamVR Tracking 2.0” base stations that will begin rolling out to developers at the start of 2018. Developers will need to test these tracking boxes with head-mounted displays (HMDs) that are compatible with the new trackers’ standard, dubbed TS4321—meaning, not the HTC Vive currently on store shelves. These tracking boxes work the same as the original infrared-crazy base stations, and they add support for “modulated light carrier input.”

SteamVR established its Home as the service’s launch screen last month, a digital lounge for players to customize as they pore through their game libraries. Now you can start filling it with collectibles you unlock while playing through their respective games, functioning like bragging rights as much as artistic flourishes for any friend you invite over.
The items are specifically from VR titles, and Steam partnered with studios to release models authentic to the characters, creatures and items appearing in those games. Virtual reality successes like Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption alongside ten others (including Dota 2 and Serious Sam: The Last Hope) provided custom models to fill up your digital personal space or fit on your avatar. While there’s no indication when the next batch will come, Valve’s blog post indicates there will be more tchotchkes from other games.

Valve made headlines today when Apple revealed the companies were working together to bring virtual reality and SteamVR to Mac computers, but the PC gaming company also quietly revealed some big changes to the way its VR system and devices like the HTC Vive work.
SteamVR is getting an overhaul to how it tracks headsets like the Vive in a three-dimensional space. Valve has redesigned the base stations that act like GPS satellites to use fewer parts and drops the sync-blinker component. That makes these tracking stations smaller, quieter, more power efficient, and — most importantly — less expensive. SteamVR can now also support more than two base stations to improve tracking in larger areas.
Valve is immediately making the new Tracking 2.0 base station tech, dubbed TS4231, available to third-party vendors. It’s also revealing that these updated devices can do more than their 1.0 counterparts. While the original base stations shot out an array of timecoded lasers that sensors on a headset or Vive wand could translate to determine where it was in 3D space, the Tracking 2.0 stations can also transmit information.
“The TS4231 part uses 5 components per sensor, so it is cheaper to place at each sensor,” reads a Steam blog. “More importantly, though, it provides a burst of data per laser or sync hit. Using that data allows information to be transmitted on the laser itself, which we can use to learn about the source of that laser.”
That could potentially improve the quality of the tracking and make it more reliable.
Now, the new tracking stations won’t pair with the 1.0 models. Those original devices require a sync-blinker to work together. The 2.0 uses a new syncing technology that exists on the beams themselves. Because of this incompatibility, Valve is advising its partners to switch to the new base station tech immediately before it enters mass production in the next couple of months.
We’ve seen attempts at free-flowing virtual worlds from the likes of Second Life and the (dearly departed) PlayStation Home, but with VR we’re getting another shot at it. First Facebook Spaces appeared, and now Valve is beta testing SteamVR Home. The Destinations Workshop previously allowed users to build and customize spaces, but opting into Home puts the world up front when they start SteamVR. Now Destinations is Home, and people who have been using it will find all of their avatars and wearables in the new space.

With Home, the virtual environments are higher res “and support animation, sound, games, and interactivity.” If you find one you like, you can set it as your default space, and once it’s set up the way you want, you can choose to open it up to the public or invite friends in for a visit complete with voice chat.
To opt into SteamVR Beta:
Open Steam on your desktop
Find SteamVR in your Library under Tools
Right click and go to Properties
Select the Betas tab and pick SteamVR Beta from the dropdown

Enlarge / Surprise! Microsoft has its own VR controller. (credit: Microsoft)
Thursday’s Microsoft Build keynote included a repeated call from Technical Fellow Alex Kipman about the importance of mixed reality (meaning, virtual reality headsets and their “augmented” reality siblings like Hololens). This platform will drive “the future of computing,” he said, and he repeated Microsoft’s call to ushering the MR era on a wide scale: by offering people a reasonably priced, low-fuss path to trying it out.
The company’s latest call echoes what it has already said about this platform, known as Windows Holographic: a bunch of headsets made by third-party vendors, starting at $ 299. Today’s announcement confirmed the first Windows Holographic bundle with a unique controller. This $ 399 bundle will launch “this fall” and will include a headset made by Acer and a pair of “VR motion controllers” made by Microsoft.
Just from the reveal, we can already determine a few things: that the controllers could be really damned cool, but that they could also be rendered irrelevant before their “fall” launch by at least one other intriguing piece of hardware.

These APIs are what is used for games and other software to interact specifically with a graphics card. Vulkan is the latest of the trio, offering more access to the graphics chip than its OpenGL predecessor.

That said, to use SteamVR for Linux, developers will need the latest Vulkan drivers. If they are working with Nvidia cards, they will also need version 375.27.10 of the Nvidia Developer Beta Driver, which can be downloaded from Nvidia here. It can also be obtained as a Debian packaged version from Nvidia’s online development drivers repository.
Meanwhile, developers creating content on AMD hardware will need a pre-release version of the RADV open-source Radeon Vulkan driver. Valve provides a build in the SteamVR for Linux repository that can be cloned and used after setting an environment variable. Currently, SteamVR for Linux doesn’t support direct mode, so the VR headset must be set to extended mode.
“SteamVR needs to be able to access the HTC Vive’s USB devices,” the release notes state. “On most Linux distributions this is not allowed by default. The latest version (1.0.0.54) of the Steam package will automatically install udev rules that allow this. However, many distributions repackage Steam. If you have installed one of those packages, you may not have the latest Steam udev rules.”
Finally, developers will need Unity 5.6 or later. However, because SteamVR on Linux only supports the Vulkan driver, developers will need to go into the game engine and add “Vulkan (Experimental)” to the Graphics APIs for Linux option. Also, make sure the “Auto Graphics API for Linux” option is unchecked.
Ultimately, this move to add SteamVR support to Linux is just one step closer to Valve’s infiltration into the living room. The company set out to overthrow the console market with its Steam Machine initiative, which consists of console-like gaming PCs. These PCs are typically powered by Valve’s open-source SteamOS operating system, which is based on Linux.
The move to add Linux support is also Valve’s attempt to provide an open-VR solution across multiple markets, including MacOS. Valve’s Joe Ludwig promised during the Steam Dev Days event in October that SteamVR would come to Linux in a matter of months, and Valve has lived up to that promise. Next up should be MacOS, which may be officially revealed during Game Developers Conference at the end of February.
]]>While VR has certainly proven popular, particularly within the gaming community where immersive experiences are key, enjoying the experience has been pricey, to say the least. The HTC Vive, after all, costs $ 799. The Nolo? Just an eighth of that price.
The Nolo tracking system is comprised of a base station, a headset marker, and two controllers that promise to work seamlessly with your mobile device. “Our team created Nolo with a vision to make the benefits of technology available to all walks of life,” the team notes on its website, “We believe that mobile VR is the perfect platform because of its affordability and ease of use.”

Better still, Nolo says that it is fully compatible with SteamVR, which means that in theory, you could access the entirety of Vive’s content library for a fraction of the price. The headset marker can sit atop any smartphone-containing VR device (such as a Gear VR, Google Daydream, or Cardboard), while the base station claims to have a 100-degree field of view.
As it stands, the Nolo setup is compatible with Android devices, though the company says it will work with iOS at a later date. And while the SteamVR compatibility is probably the biggest draw for folks interested in Nolo for now, the team says that the device can also be used with native mobile VR games.
With three weeks still left in the Kickstarter campaign, Nolo has already raised nearly $ 190,000 from more than 1,300 backers. But don’t get too excited too soon — as Upload VR points out, Nolo’s wireless setup needs you to stream content from a PC over the Riftcat and VRidge apps, which will come with latency issues. While Nolo supposedly can keep the delay to under 20 milliseconds, even if they’re off by a minute amount, it could make gameplay near impossible. But hey, maybe you’ll have a chance to test it out for yourself to see.
