Hotels are expected to provide a certain standard of service to paying guests – but one hotel chain has continued to disappoint for six years in a row. Britannia Hotels has been named as the worst UK hotel chain in new research by Which? Travel. The chain – which has 105 hotel – has ranked bottom place for the sixth consecutive year and received a very low customer score of 35 per cent. Britannia’s poor customer service, shabby rooms and bad food have been complained about by nearly a quarter of guests. It received one star in most categories and just two stars for average price paid, bed comfort and customer service. A one-star rating signifies “a sub-standard hotel well below average in its category,” while two stars means “an adequate hotel that has room for improvement.” The terms “old,” “shabby” and “outdated” were repeatedly used to describe the chain when guests were asked to describe how they found their stay with Britannia Hotels. One guest went as far as to describe the hotel they stayed in as a “filthy hovel,” while another advised not to bother and to “find somewhere else.” The hotel’s website promises to offer “character and style” but photos taken by a Which? investigator show crayon on the bedroom walls, stained carpets and grubby towels. The communal areas were just as bad, with gaffer-taped rips in an armchair and some chewing gum stuck to a bannister. A whopping 42 per cent of guests who stayed with Britannia had a problem with their stay. In fact, nearly one in four guests had made an official complaint to the hotel compared to the average of less than one in 10 and only two per cent of people who had stayed at a Wetherspoon Hotel (which received a 71 per cent customer score). Most complaints surrounding stays at Britannia related to poor customer service (41 per cent) and poor quality of rooms (41 per cent), followed by cleanliness (32 per cent) and quality of food (27 per cent). To make matters worse, most guests (71 per cent) who made an official complaint to Britannia were dissatisfied with the outcome. Express.co.uk has contacted Britannia Hotels for comment on their low ranking. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the best hotel chain in the UK was revealed to be Premier Inn. Premier Inn garnered a 79 per cent customer score and won top place for the fourth year in a row. Guests rated the chain five stars for cleanliness, the comfort of its beds and customer service. In fact, it was hard to find a guest review that did not describe their stay as “excellent.” Simon Jones, Managing Director Premier Inn and Restaurants commented: “At Premier Inn we welcome thousands of guests through our doors every day and so we are delighted and overwhelmingly proud that Which? readers have chosen us as their number one for the fourth year running. “Our thanks go to all the readers who rated us so highly, but also to the people who we wouldn’t be able to do this without, our thousands of team members across every one of our hotels and restaurants. Whether they are responsible for the spotless rooms, ensuring our beds are the most comfortable, cooking up one of our famous breakfasts, or just a friendly, welcoming smile at the end of a long day.” Hilton: Garden Inn came in second place with a 77 per cent customer score and Fuller’s Hotels were in third with 75 per cent. Rory Boland, Which? Travel editor, said: “Britannia has superb locations, fabulous buildings – but terrible hotels. Guests looking for a safe bet, with no nasty surprises, should opt for a no-nonsense option like Premier Inn. “Anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful hotel could do worse than booking a stay at a Wetherspoon – complete with an added bonus of only a staircase separating you and your bed after a slap-up meal and a glass or two of wine.” Guests have also been warned about the dangers of using the coffee machine in a hotel bedroom as they could make customers very sick indeed.

It is no exaggeration to say that The Plaza in Midtown Manhattan is New York’s most iconic hotel. When it was opened in 1907, newspapers reportedly declared it “the greatest hotel in the world.“
Since, it has played host to New York’s ultra wealthy, from the scions of the Vanderbilt and Kennedy families to American artists and socialites F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Ambassadors, princesses, and actors and actresses have all called The Plaza home at one point or another.
It first became etched in the American cultural imagination in Fitzgerald’s seminal novel “The Great Gatsby” and since has been featured in countless films, television shows, and literature. More recently, it was featured in “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York” and “American Hustle.”
President Donald Trump once owned the hotel for a time, purchasing it in 1988 for $ 390 million —around $ 807 million in 2017 dollars.
In an open letter to New York Magazine, he famously declared, “I haven’t purchased a building, I have purchased a masterpiece – the Mona Lisa. For the first time in my life, I have knowingly made a deal that was not economic – for I can never justify the price I paid, no matter how successful the Plaza becomes.”
The hotel has passed through many owners throughout its 100+ year history. We stayed at the hotel recently to see if it still retains the regal charm for which it has always we been known.

For millions of travelers, hostels are the preferred choice of lodging.
The benefits are obvious: Hostels are generally inexpensive, conveniently located, and a great way to meet other travelers and share recommendations. As long as you don’t mind sharing a bedroom and bathroom, they’re the perfect place to stay when you’re on vacation.
But hostels can range widely in quality. I would know — I’ve stayed in close to 100 hostels on four continents, from an uber-fancy, palace-like hostel in Paris to a $ 1-a-night gem in Hanoi, Vietnam. I even spent one summer working at a hostel in New York City.
While most hostel experiences went off without a hitch, I’ve also learned the red flags that scream “avoid this place.”
Here are nine red flags to watch out for before you unpack your suitcase:
Shutterstock
It’s a huge red flag if you show up to your hostel and find it operates under a different name than the one listed online.
The same thing goes if you make your booking online, only to receive an email instructing you to go to a different address than the one listed.
Both of those things could be an indicator that the hostel isn’t actually a legitimate business, and is trying to skirt authorities by concealing its name and location.

Safety is the most important factor in choosing a hostel, and you shouldn’t settle for a hostel in a sketchy neighborhood just to save a few bucks.
When you arrive to check in, it’s not a bad idea to explore the neighborhood surrounding the hostel to make sure it’s in a a well-lit, high-trafficked area. If you are getting bad vibes from the area, there’s no shame in switching hostels.

It’s important for hostels to secure their entrances in some way, like requiring a key to get in or having guests buzz a doorbell from outside the front gate. Bonus points if there are security cameras outside the front door and in the reception area. The hostel I worked at required guests to enter a combination on a push-button lock to enter the lobby.
Even in good neighborhoods, hostels can be lucrative targets for criminals, and your hostel should take precautions to ensure the safety of its guests.

Every year, Republican members of Congress and their staffers convene for a three-day retreat — away from the hubbub of Washington — to socialize and discuss their party’s agenda.
On Wednesday, GOP lawmakers traveled to this year’s venue: The Greenbrier, a luxury resort in West Virginia, established during the 18th century, that has hosted US presidents and features an underground bunker where Congress was supposed to hideout in the event of a nuclear outbreak during the Cold War.
Take a look at what it’s like inside this beautiful resort:

PART 4 | Aboard the Waverider, Stein and Jefferson’s fates remain tethered to one another, and Gideon is unable to remedy the situation. Meanwhile at S.T.A.R. Labs, Eobard Thawne has been using fabricated red sun rays to soften Kara up, so that she can be cut into and donate her heart to withering Overgirl. Unbeknownst to them, Felicity and Iris have been scampering around the air ducts McClane-style, unable to free the pipelined heroes but able to get an alert out to the Legends. And though the ladies get captured, later, just as Thawne puts scalpel to skin, he meets unexpected resistance — in the form of a miniaturized Atom! [And the crowd cheers.] Ray sizes up and KO’s the baddies, while Nate, Amaya and Zari go about freeing Cisco, Caitlin et al from the pipeline. That opens the door for a terrific team-up against Metallo, with rays/blasts attacking the robot from all directions. Meanwhile, a standoff between Oliver (with Kara-X at knifepoint) and Oliver-X (aiming an arrow at Felicity) is quickly ended when Dark Flash shows up to whisk away his cohorts.
Kara-X was loaded onto the Evil Waverider, where her deteriorating state put her at risk of exploding, which would not be a good thing for anyone, anywhere. Our Waverider in turn gave chase, piloted by Cisco, though its options were limited until the baddies’ shields could be shut down. To that end, Killer Frost created an ice ramp for her, Vixen and Zari to ride up and into, and seize control of, the Evil Waverider. Cisco then turned his controls over to Harry, so that he could breach the ladies back before the enemy ship went kaboom. Amid all this, Kara invited Overgirl into the sky for a fight. But when Kara-X headed toward countdown mode, Supergirl flew her up, up and away to safely explode.
On the ground, Oliver-X paused his tussle with Green Arrow to look to the sky and gasp in horror at his wife’s fate, allowing Oliver to put an arrow in the heart. Barry gained the upper, vibrating hand against Thawne, only to let his nemesis get away. Kara, KO’d by her doppelganger’s explosion, plummeted to the ground, but was safely caught by Steel.

Woo Seung-yep keeps a camouflage backpack loaded with supplies just in case he needs to grab it and go.
Inside are things like a flashlight, canned food and a pair of socks.
Woo runs an online forum with 20,000 members called Survival 21 and consults with local governments on how to prep for disasters. The 44-year-old consultant says he’s trying to help people prepare for war, but most South Koreans don’t take North Korea’s threats seriously.
While tensions between the US and North Korea have escalated this year, South Koreans have largely remained calm — there’s been no panic or stockpiling of food and water. Despite living only 35 miles from the Demilitarized Zone, residents of Seoul generally go about their daily lives.
Woo says he finds there’s an aversion to discussing the potential of a North Korean strike and even members of his online survival community don’t want to say the word “war.”
“There’s a superstition that if you say bad things, those bad things could actually happen,” Woo says. “They’d rather just ignore the possibility of war altogether.”
Woo says he thinks South Koreans are in a state of denial. And some mental health professionals believe he might be onto something.
“There is that protective mechanism in our brain where big threats are ruled out,” says Kim Hyun-chung, a psychiatrist at the National Medical Center in Seoul. “If we’re so sensitive to all the dangers that lurk here, you can’t live here.”
Kim says a lot of South Koreans have suppressed their fear of another Korean War, because deep down they “feel helpless.”
They cope with this anxiety through dark humor or by just trying to change the subject, she explains.
Jason Strother/PRI’s The World
But Kim notes that because of the recent uptick in rhetoric between North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump, South Koreans are talking more about war and they’re getting worried. She is too.
“I’m avoiding the topic. I don’t want to imagine it,” Kim says, but adds it might be time to start talking with her husband and their 10-year-old son about what to do in case of an attack.
Koo Se-woong, publisher of the online magazine Korea Exposé, says he’s also been having conversations about evacuation plans with his parents, who survived the Korean War.
“They tell me that if all people go out into the street during war, they are more likely to die, so we’re just going to stay in our apartment,” Koo says, adding they laugh about it but it still feels “unreal” to him.
Koo says Trump’s threats — to fight North Korea with “fire and fury” or “totally destroy” the country — have crossed a line.
“That’s what’s frightening to many South Koreans and that’s what’s certainly generated concern as well as conversation here,” he says.
A September Gallup poll found that 58 percent of Americans would support a military response to North Korea if diplomacy fails, which Koo says is “deeply troubling.”
“For us it’s a life or death matter,” he says. “But perhaps for Americans, I guess it’s difficult to have the same kind of ideas or worries.”
Jason Strother/PRI’s The World
South Korean media recently reported an increase in sales of war survival kits, which were given as gifts during the Chuseok holiday in early October.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has also stepped up its emergency precautions in recent months. In August, civil defense drills were expanded to include more of the city’s districts. During the exercises, residents were instructed to practice evacuating into some of Seoul’s 4,100 air raid shelters, which include subway stations and underground parking garages.
But Woo Seung-yep, who keeps a survival backpack on hand, says the government still does not have a solid emergency response plan. And that’s why South Koreans need to take survival into their own hands.
Woo says while the atmosphere on the Korean peninsula is tense, he doesn’t think war is imminent.
“I tell people that while a war might be looming, it’s not going to happen right away,” Woo says. “I think a war could break out within a year or so.”
But just to be safe, he recently added a gas mask to his backpack.
Jason Strother reported from Seoul, South Korea.

An Australian man with the room next to the gunman’s says he’s “shaken” by Sunday’s attack.
Brian Hodge wasn’t in the room when 64-year-old retired accountant Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor concert across the street, killing 59 people and wounding more than 500. Instead, the 36-year-old was returning to the hotel after dinner, and made it up to the 32nd floor, when shots rang out.
Eventually, Hodge took shelter in the bushes outside the Mandalay Bay hotel.
Paddock had 23 guns in the room where he had been staying since Thursday.
Hodge says it’s “unsettling” to think he had been sleeping next to a room filled with guns and ammunition.

Before Hurricane Irma made landfall in Key West, FL on Sunday morning, Floridians hustled to make final preparations in case the storm severed an of the critical transportation, communication, and power lines that keep modern life humming. That sent much of the state driving to gas stations to top off tanks in the event an escape was required. But many stations couldn’t meet the sudden demand, so fuel shortages and miles-long lines fast became a reality.
Enter GasBuddy, an app that crowd-sources gas prices for bargain hunters. The app helped locals search for well-stocked gas stations in the days leading up to Irma, earning an endorsement from Florida Governor Rick Scott last week. On Thursday it was downloaded 350,000 times, up from the app’s usual 30,000 installations, according to the Wall Street Journal.
GasBuddy even sent two of its gas analysts to Florida’s state capitol to help lawmakers there figure out where to direct relief gas supplies. The company, which was founded in 2000, has previous experience disseminating information during crises like superstorm Sandy in 2012, and the recent Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
]]>But should the (typically) summertime staple get picked up for Season 5, here is where things were left standing with regards to the assorted staffers.
Having pulled the trigger on a military medicine training program (in which medical professionals work alongside Army Rangers and such), SCOTT fielded some heat from JULIAN, who worried about the Cummings Medical group getting a black eye if the endeavor went sideways. But in the end, Rob Estes showed up to award SAM the Army contract — at which point Scott suggested the program could be expanded to train Navy, Marines, S.W.A.T… all while giving Julian credit for the idea. Good soldier, indeed.
(On the personal front, Julian started welcoming son-in-law-to-be KENNY into the Cummings family circle/grooming him to be a suit. Paul warned Kenny about what that means, but Kenny deflected the cynicism, saying he was happy to feel wanted, to have his potential seen.)
Sparked by guest patient Paige Jennings (working undercover for the KGB, obvi), SHANNON and PAUL got to reconsidering what makes them happy on the job front. Turned off by the “rappelling out of airplanes,” body armor and what not that has been going on lately — and still wounded by Jordan’s review — Shannon announced that she was going to seek a residency elsewhere. Paul meanwhile decided to break out of his comfort zone and work his medical magic abroad, in, like, Africa. TC makes some calls and gets Paul assigned to Syria (more on that in a bit), and the kid takes off after leaving his dad with just a text. As for Shannon, Jordan appeals to her to stay put, ultimately offering a compromise, as her friend: work with your reservation’s clinic for six months, then come back to SAM. Deal!
Egged on a bit by training program member REAGAN (Rookie Blue‘s Missy Peregrym channeling Season 1 Kate Beckett) — with whom he and the others braved a non-simulated scare, tending to a campus shooting — DREW got to thinking about husband Rick’s Ranger tab that he carries around (in hopes that he one day will earn his own). But to join up would leave the hospital hanging, especially in the wake of Cain bailing. Drew is about to give up on his dream when Rick urges him not to, saying that SAM will always be there when he comes back.
But who will fill Drew’s spot in Scott’s military medicine training program? Why, none other than TC, who at the last minute decided to stay put — at least until the training program has ended — rather then return to Syria, where MS-battling AMIRA is now working alongside Paul (who took TC’s spot). TC’s decision came after an undertone-laden conversation with JORDAN, at Kenny and Bella’s engagement party, about how San Antonio “doesn’t need him anymore,” whereas Syria does. But oh, “San Antonio” will miss him, Jordan countered — words she seemed to reiterate during the teary toast she gave at the party.
Are you glad to see TC stick around? Do you want the show to return to a split narrative and keep tabs on Paul and Amira abroad? Do you hope that if there is a Season 5, Missy Peregrym returns (as hinted) on a steady basis? And where in the world was Rachelle Lefevre’s “Major Natasha Anthony”? (Dropped because of the actress’ new gig, maybe?)
