How four cups of tea a day can stave off heart disease https://briefnews.eu/how-four-cups-of-tea-a-day-can-stave-off-heart-disease/ https://briefnews.eu/how-four-cups-of-tea-a-day-can-stave-off-heart-disease/#respond Mon, 24 Sep 2018 01:34:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-four-cups-of-tea-a-day-can-stave-off-heart-disease/

A review of data from more than 40 research papers found that the regular consumption of black or green tea lowered cholesterol, improved cardiovascular function and reduced inflammation – all of which can contribute to a person’s risk of serious health problems.

Nutritionist and study co-author Dr Emma Derbyshire said drinking tea “could help save lives and NHS resources”.

She said: “The evidence is overwhelming. Drinking tea every day helps protect against heart disease and stroke.

“Most of these benefits seem to flow from the high levels of polyphenols in both black and green tea, but the nation’s favourite brew also contains other protective and health-enhancing compounds.”

The research was commissioned by the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP) and included data from 19 medical trials and 23 papers.

While drinking tea – dubbed the cup that cheers – four to five times a day was found to be most effective, drinking as few as three cups daily for six months could cut diastolic blood pressure by three points.

Research has shown that a drop of just two points can reduce a person’s risk of having a heart attack, stroke or fatal cardiovascular event by 12 per cent.

Study lead author Dr Tim Bond said: “Millions of us enjoy tea every day, but now there is even more reason to put the kettle on. Given the huge burden of heart and vascular disease in the UK, even a modest reduction in risk could save thousands of lives.”

Cardiovascular disease, caused by narrowed or blocked blood vessels, kills more than 150,000 people a year in the UK.

It accounts for 26 per cent of all deaths, according to the British Heart Foundation.

The study found that drinking between one and three cups of green tea a day cut risk of a stroke by 36 per cent and the odds of having a heart attack by 19 per cent.

It also helped lower cholesterol.

Co-author Dr Chris Etheridge added: “We know a number of lifestyle interventions, such as weight loss, improved diet and increased activity help reduce the risk of heart disease or a stroke. “But the reality is that a large percentage of the population is not adopting these strategies.

“The beauty of turning to tea is that it is easy, appealing and infinitely achievable.”

Eating a diet rich in vegetables, nuts, olive oil and fish is essential to keeping fit mentally

Loading up on berries, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, fish and seafood is essential to keeping the mind firing into old age.

To get the maximum benefit beans, legumes, grains, fruits, poultry and low fat dairy should be included in meals while fried food, pastries, processed foods, red meat, cheese, butter and salt should be limited.

The latest recommendations from the Global Council on Brain Health, an international collaboration of independent experts, suggests brain wasting diseases like dementia could be staved off by sticking to a healthy diet.

While there is no “silver bullet” superfood to stave off the ravages of dementia the report says switching to healthy eating habits early reaps the biggest benefit.

Professor Linda Clare

Professor Linda Clare, of the University of Exeter who helped compile the report, said: “Our analysis shows what is good for the heart is good for the brain.

“Eating plenty of green leafy vegetables and berries contributes to better brain health.

“Excessive alcohol, and a diet high in red meat, saturated fats, sugar and salt can harm your brain health.

“Instead, it’s best to choose a variety of fruits and vegetables and healthy grains, and swap butter and red meats for more olive oil and omega-3 rich fish.”

DementiaGETTY

The Mediterranean diet is characterised by high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish

She added: “We now know that people can significantly reduce their risk of dementia through taking action on medical and lifestyle factors, including diet.

“This report gives the strongest guidance yet about how to eat for the best chance of keeping your brain sharp into later life. We can’t eliminate dementia risk, but we can act to keep our brains healthy.”

Experts said at least one meal a week should be fish that is not fried, fruit and vegetables should be fresh, frozen or canned in water or their own juice while snacking should be raw, plain, unsalted nuts.

They also urged caution when eating chocolate as cocoa-rich products are high calorie because they often include sugar and high fat dairy products.

People should avoid diets high in red meat, saturated fats, sugar and salt

It means excess weight could counterbalance, or even exceed, any benefits from eating cocoa.

James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, said: “It appears that very few people have a solid understanding of the connection between nutrition and brain health.

“The great value of this report is that it spells out in an uncomplicated way what we know for certain about the diet and brain health and what we can do to maintain our brain health by eating wisely.

“Though there is no silver bullet, making simple changes to what we eat, along with other vital lifestyle changes, can make a big difference over our life time.”

The recommendations are based on evidence suggesting certain foods are beneficial to cognitive health but they do not conclusively show any of the recommended foods can prevent cognitive decline.

The report singled four diets as being the best for brain health. The fabled Mediterranean diet, common in Greece, Italy and Spain, is characterised by high intake of monounsaturated fat, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish.

It also includes low consumption of red meat, refined grains and sweets and moderate intake of wine with studies suggesting it can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and help manage diabetes.

Other diets thought to be beneficial for brain health include the Nordic diet, which uses rapeseed oil instead of olive oil, and an abundance on plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables.

Advocates of the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) say low-fat and non-fat dairy, lean meats, fish and poultry, whole grains, and heart healthy fats improve blood pressure and slashes the risk of chronic disease.

The MIND (Mediterranean – DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) includes an abundance of vegetables, whole grains and a daily glass of wine.

It recommends green leafy vegetables six times a week, other vegetables at least once a day and two or more servings a week of berries.

It also advises snacking on nuts most days, eating beans every other day, poultry twice a week and fish at least once a week while limiting butter, cheese, and fried or fast food.

The Okinawan diet, based on the eating habits of the indigenous people of the Ryukyu Islands in Japan who are recognised as having exceptional longevity, emphasises yellow, orange and green vegetables, includes soy and legumes and low amounts of meat, refined grains, sugar, salt or dairy.

The diet also features large amounts of sweet potatoes.

Scientists have found a daily serving of foods such as lettuce and spinach could be linked to a slower rate of brain ageing – the equivalent over a lifetime of keeping the brain 11 years younger.

The study found that people who ate salads each day had a slower rate of decline on tests of memory and thinking skills than people who never or rarely touched such foods.

The team of researchers discovered that eating greens regularly reduced the likelihood of the symptoms of dementia or diseases which cause it such as Alzheimer’s.

In the study the projected difference between the two groups – one regularly eating greens and the other not – over a lifetime was the equivalent of being just over a decade younger in age, according to the American research team.

Study author Professor Martha Clare Morris, of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, said the findings, published online by the journal Neurology, highlighted the importance of diet.

She explained: “Adding a daily serving of green, leafy vegetables to your diet may be a simple way to foster your brain health.

“Projections show sharp increases in the percentage of people with dementia as the oldest age groups continue to grow in number, so effective strategies to prevent dementia are critical.”

Last night UK research bodies into Alzheimer’s and dementia welcomed the study.

Dr Sara Imarisio, head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Fruits and vegetables are a key component of a nutritionally balanced diet, but figures suggest that many of us struggle to eat our five-a-day. As well as helping to support our overall physical health, this research adds to evidence of a link between a diet rich in vegetables and a healthy brain.

“As well as eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, research points to a number of other lifestyle factors that could help support brain health into old age. These include not smoking, staying mentally and physically active, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol in check and only drinking in moderation.”

Dr James Pickett, head of research at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “It’s no secret that eating vegetables is good for your health. This study found eating food rich in vitamin K – like spinach, kale, asparagus and everyone’s favourite, Brussels sprouts – appears to slow cognitive decline as people age.

“The researchers did not directly look at dementia, so we cannot say that it would delay or prevent the onset of the condition. However, older people who ate one or two servings of vitamin K rich food per day performed better on memory tests than those who didn’t.

“In fact, their scores were similar to those of people 11 years younger, irrespective of other factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and education level.”

He added: “What’s good for the heart is good for the head. A healthy diet rich in essential nutrients, combined with regular exercise and avoiding smoking, can help to reduce your risk of developing dementia. So make sure your Christmas dinner is piled high with greens this year.”

A total of 960 people with an average age of 81 who did not have dementia were followed for an average of 4.7 years.

The participants completed a questionnaire about how often they ate certain foods and had their thinking and memory skills tested yearly during that time.

They were asked how often and how many servings they ate of three green, leafy vegetables – spinach, kale, collards or greens and lettuce.

The participants were divided into five equal groups based on how often they ate the foods.

The people in the top serving group ate an average of about 1.3 servings per day. Those in the lowest serving group ate on average 0.1 helpings per day.

Overall, the participants’ scores on the thinking and memory tests declined over time at a rate of 0.08 standardised units per year.

Over 10 years of follow-up, the rate of decline for those who ate the most leafy greens was slower by 0.05 standardised units per year than the rate for those who ate the least leafy greens.

The difference was found to be equivalent to being 11 years younger in age, according to the researchers.

The study team said the results remained valid after accounting for other factors that could affect brain health such as smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, education level and amount of physical and cognitive activities.

Consuming items like blueberries and ginger helps to manage the debilitating disease.

A definitive list of superfoods has been compiled for sufferers by scientists, including olive oil and green tea.

The researchers say they have proven beneficial effects recommended for fighting the symptoms and progression of the crippling condition.

Dr Bhawna Gupta, one of the researchers behind the study, said: “Regular consumption of specific dietary fibres, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

“Incorporating probiotics into the diet can also reduce the progression and symptoms of this disease.

“Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should switch from omnivorous diets, drinking alcohol and smoking to Mediterranean, vegan, elemental or elimination diets, as advised by their doctor or dietician.”

In the UK, some 10 million people now suffer from arthritis – 8.5 million of them from the most common form osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear on joints where the cartilage is worn away.

Around 400,000 people in Britain suffer from rheumatoid arthritis – a disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the body’s joints.

Last night charities involved in research into the condition welcomed the findings of the study by KIIT University in India.

Dr Natalie Carter, head of research liaison and evaluation at Arthritis Research UK, said: “Research has shown that maintaining a healthy weight and eating a Mediterranean-style diet can be beneficial for some people with arthritis. In particular, Omega 3 fatty acids from oily fish have been shown to help with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.”

The latest study found diet plays a crucial role.

Dr Gupta said: “Supporting disease management through food and diet does not pose any harmful side effects and is relatively cheap and easy.

“Doctors, physicians and dieticians can use our study to summarise current proven knowledge on the links between certain foods and rheumatoid arthritis.

“Knowing the nutritional and medicinal requirements of their patients they can then tailor this information for the betterment of their health.”

Various dietary plans for rheumatoid arthritis – such as vegan, seven to 10 days fasting and Mediterranean – have long been recommended.

But the research team said their study – only the second overall assessment of diet and food regarding the disease – provided a thorough evaluation of current scientific knowledge and made a point of only reporting dietary interventions and specific foods that clearly show proven long-term effects.

The researchers hope the study, published in the journal Frontiers In Nutrition, can also be used as a reference for the development of new medicines.

Dr Gupta said: “Our review focused on specific dietary components and phytochemicals from foods that have a proven beneficial effect on rheumatoid arthritis.

“Pharmaceutical companies may use this information to formulate ‘nutraceuticals’.

“Nutraceuticals have an advantage over chemically tailored medicines as they are not associated with any side effects, originate from natural sources and are cheaper.”

A wide-ranging study found that even moderate exercise taken daily reduces early mortality

A wide-ranging study found that even moderate exercise taken daily reduces early mortality by as much as 20 per cent.

Scientists discovered that taking a regular stroll – even when not meeting the minimum levels recommended by UK health chiefs – was still associated with significantly lower mortality when compared to those who are inactive.

And walking just two-and-a-half hours per week was associated with a 20 per cent lower mortality risk, according to the findings published online by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Study leader Dr Alpa Patel, from the American Cancer Society, explained: “Walking has been described as the ‘perfect exercise’ because it is simple, free, convenient, doesn’t require any special equipment or training, and can be done at any age.”

And he warned: “With the near doubling of adults aged 65 and older expected by 2030, clinicians should encourage patients to walk even if less than the recommended amount, especially as they age, for health and longevity.”

In the UK, current public health guidelines recommend adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate – or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity – physical activity per week.

Experts in preventing heart disease – the UK’s biggest killer claiming around 160,000 lives a year – and cancer, stress the importance of regular exercise where possible.

The British Heart Foundation recommends we all stay active, wherever possible.

Around 3,400 cases of cancer in the UK each year could be prevented by keeping active

A spokesman said: “Physical activity can help reduce your risk of heart disease. It can also help you control your weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol and improve your mental health – helping you to look and feel great.”

The BHF suggests a ‘10-minute challenge’, which it details on its website and can be done in your own front room, for those who see the 150minute weekly recommendation as daunting.

“If 150 minutes of physical activity a week seems like a lot, don’t worry. You can break it down into ten minute sessions throughout the day and build up from there,” he said.

Cancer Research UK also stressed the importance of physical activity.

A spokesman said: “Around 3,400 cases of cancer in the UK each year could be prevented by keeping active.

“Scientists have shown that low levels of physical activity can increase the risk of certain cancers.

Physical activity can help reduce your risk of heart disease

“Inactive lifestyles can lead to many other health problems. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke and heart disease.”

Walking is the most common type of physical activity, and an increasing number of studies have associated it with lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, as well as breast and colon cancers.

While several papers have linked overall moderate-vigorous physical activity to a reduced risk of death, relatively few have examined associations with walking specifically.

To learn more, researchers in the new study analysed figures from nearly 140,000 participants in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort.

Around six per cent of the participants reported no moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity at the start.

Inactive lifestyles can lead to many different health problems

Among the rest, about 95 per cent reported some walking, and nearly half walked as their only form of moderate-vigorous physical activity. But the study found that in total, only half of adults meet the weekly exercise recommendation.

Older adults were even less likely to meet minimum recommendations, with just 42 per cent of people aged 65 to 74 and 28 per cent aged 75 and older achieving the target.

After correcting for other risk factors, including smoking, obesity, and chronic conditions, the study found walking-only for less than two hours per week was associated with lower all-cause mortality compared to no activity.

Meeting the minimum recommendation – 2.5 hours – or going up to as much as five hours a week, through walking-only was associated with a 20 per cent lower mortality risk.

But exercising any more than this did not change the findings.

Results for those exceeding recommendations through walking-only were similar to those who met recommendations.

Walking-only was most strongly associated with respiratory disease mortality, with around a 35 per cent lower risk comparing more than six hours per week of walking to the least active group.

Walking-only was also associated with about 20 per cent less risk of cardiovascular disease mortality and with about nine per cent less risk of cancer mortality.
