Between swished corner threes, putback dunks and astounding blocks, Michigan State’s super freshman is apt to disappear. This is not meant to discredit Jackson’s skill or drive. Rather, the rage when one of college basketball’s most exciting prospects rides the pine, due to foul trouble and trust issues, is a credit to Jackson’s outsize potential. Win or lose, watching the Michigan State Spartans becomes an exercise in patience: When will we see more Jaren Jackson?

It’s the same question his Hall of Fame coach is asking.

“Jaren has done a good job,” Tom Izzo tells OZY, moments after beating Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on March 2. “He’s a shot blocker who can change the game at the four or the five [position].… We just have to keep him in the game because Jaren Jackson is very valuable to this team.”

I know sometimes I won’t be out there long, because I foul somebody or do something stupid.

Jaren Jackson Jr.

Compared with other freshman big men dominating college basketball, Jackson, 18, has flown under the radar. While Arizona’s Deandre Ayton and Duke’s Marvin Bagley III have posted 20-and-11 seasons and play most of the game, Jackson has a much shorter leash, and his stat line — 11.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks in only 22.2 minutes per game — hardly tells the full story. Unlike most college coaches, Izzo has a stacked roster that allows him to sit his future lottery pick, both for rest and reprimand. Between flashes of brilliance, the 6-foot-11 Jackson often finds himself in foul trouble, playing as part of a four-man rotation featuring sophomore Nick Ward, senior Gavin Schilling and freshman (and Jackson’s roommate) Xavier Tillman. Now, following a 12-day layoff before March Madness, Jackson’s versatility — and ability to stay on the floor — will anchor any potential title run. After that, the case could be made that he will be the most well-rounded one-and-done player in the NBA draft. If he decides to go.

“Everybody in the NBA is looking for a ‘unicorn’ prospect,” says Turner NCAA analyst Steve Smith, who also starred at Michigan State before a 14-year NBA career. “Well, [Jackson] can shoot threes, he’s good in the post, and I’ve never seen a young kid with such great timing on defense.… His potential is off the charts.”

A McDonald’s All-American out of Carmel, Indiana, Jackson was the country’s ninth-ranked high school recruit last summer. He combines exceptional defensive instincts with deep shooting range, great mobility and above-average passing — a complete game for which he thanks (at least in part) his father. Jaren Jackson Sr. starred at Georgetown in the late 1980s before playing 13 seasons for nine different NBA teams. In 1999, months before his son was born, Jackson helped the San Antonio Spurs win the franchise’s first NBA title. “He’s my favorite player,” Jaren says of his dad. “He taught me everything I know. I’ve always wanted to be like him.”

But Dad was not the only basketball force in the Jackson household. When Jaren was 13, his mother, Terri Carmichael Jackson, became the director of law, policy and governance at the NCAA. Headquartered in Indianapolis, the gig moved the family to basketball-crazed Indiana and made Terri acutely aware of every NCAA rules violation her son might encounter on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit or the recruiting trail. In a season where pay-for-play corruption has gripped the game’s biggest programs, Terri’s strict rules of operation kept bad actors at bay. “I didn’t even have to try to stay on the straight and narrow because she scared everybody away,” Jackson says with a chuckle. “I was squeaky-clean!”

On March 5, Jackson was named both Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year — the latter convincing most NBA scouts that he’s ready for the next level now. And, in spurts, it’s easy to see Jackson’s full potential. In the early moments of Michigan State’s nail-biting win over Wisconsin, he easily won the tipoff before proceeding to drop-step through the body and soul of Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ. An ensuing blocked shot and assist led to an emphatic flex from the lanky teen, as if Wisconsin needed any more evidence that they were being outgunned by an 18-year-old opponent.

But from there, like so often this season, Jackson got lost in the shuffle. He eventually fouled out with 7 points, three rebounds and just 15 minutes played. In the New York Knicks locker room after the game, between joking with Tillman and heading out to greet his parents, Jackson was surprisingly self-aware. “I know sometimes I won’t be out there long, because I foul somebody or do something stupid,” he said. “But if I can limit mistakes, my productivity will increase because I can do a lot of different things on the court.”

As a No. 3 seed with only four losses on the season, Michigan State is a favorite to make the eighth Final Four trip of Izzo’s tenure. All-American forward Miles Bridges, point guard Cassius Winston and their package of impactful big men make the Spartans a threat whether Jackson plays 15 minutes or 35. But MSU is just 3-4 against top competition and, in their losses — to Duke, Ohio State and Michigan (twice) — they’ve been exposed by teams that spread the floor offensively and can defend the post. If Michigan State wins the title, you can bet Jaren Jackson avoided foul trouble and was highly engaged on both ends of the floor.

“For this team, I’m more of a defensive stopper and spot-up shooter,” Jackson continues. “We have plenty of players that can create offense.… I’ll save that for next year.”

Or maybe, Jaren, try it next week.

How Do This State's Lawmakers Earn Their Money? None of Your Damn Business https://briefnews.eu/how-do-this-states-lawmakers-earn-their-money-none-of-your-damn-business/ https://briefnews.eu/how-do-this-states-lawmakers-earn-their-money-none-of-your-damn-business/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 11:02:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-do-this-states-lawmakers-earn-their-money-none-of-your-damn-business/

Folks in Idaho Falls are of the “live and let live” sort, says Dan Knudsen, a longtime area math teacher. That mentality applies to politics as well. Knudsen doesn’t seem too bothered, for instance, that the Gem State is one of only a few where lawmakers don’t have to report the sources of their revenue. He wonders aloud about Frank VanderSloot, the local founder of Melaleuca, an online wellness company that brings hundreds of jobs to the rural east Idaho region. “He’s a billionaire,” Knudsen says, and it wouldn’t surprise him if VanderSloot does business with lawmakers. “But he’s a good guy. He puts on the Fourth of July fireworks every year. The biggest in the West, they say.”

That folksy trust extends to the capital, Boise. “There’s not a huge problem in Idaho — I don’t think there is,” Idaho House Speaker Scott Bedke reportedly told lawmakers considering ethics reform two years ago. “I know most of you well, I know your hearts.” While Bedke may know them, the public has no way to, because financial reporting isn’t required.

Idaho is one of just three — wait, make that two — states with no financial disclosure requirements for state legislators.

Only state lawmakers in Idaho and Michigan don’t have to report how they earn their keep, after Vermont passed a law in mid-June that requires public reports for incomes of more than $ 5,000. Such disclosures are seen as important checks against legislators, fans of transparent government say. Idaho has no ethics commission to oversee potential corruption, nor a cooling-off period that keeps public officials from becoming lobbyists soon after leaving office. The result is a system with little oversight, which earned a D– rating from the Center for Public Integrity in its 2015 investigative report.

Idaho is dragging its feet at a time when public faith in government is at an all-time low.

To be clear, there’s “no deep history of corruption” in Idaho, writes Betsy Russell, president of Idahoans for Openness in Government, in an analysis provided to OZY, although an Obama-era Department of Justice probe into private prison contracts — and the way they were awarded to big donors of the governor — tested the state’s squeaky-clean image. Idahoans have tried to address transparency issues recently, filing a public petition last year that fell just short of the signatures it needed to force a referendum vote on disclosure laws. And state lawmakers have discussed creating a study group to examine how the humble Legislature, which meets only three months a year, can practice good government.

Yet study groups can go nowhere fast, as Idaho politicos found when a “faith healing” committee conducted a series of open town halls, then failed to give so much as a recommendation. Nationally, some states are actually pushing ahead on ethics reform; and this year, lawmakers in 26 states proposed a law compelling presidential candidates to release their federal tax returns, after Donald Trump notably refused to during the 2016 presidential election.

Idaho is dragging its feet at a time when public faith in government is at an all-time low. “It’s just another example of how broke our system is,” says Pablo Barra, who moved to Idaho from California five years ago. But revealing records can sometimes be beneficial — showing when lawmakers shun personal gain for the public good, says Kytja Weir, a project manager for the Center for Public Integrity. “The general mantra is that sunlight is the best disinfectant. If you can see [the money], you can see whether or not there is a conflict of interest.”

The Lone Star State's Head Honcho Lobbyist https://briefnews.eu/the-lone-star-states-head-honcho-lobbyist/ https://briefnews.eu/the-lone-star-states-head-honcho-lobbyist/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 04:53:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-lone-star-states-head-honcho-lobbyist/

Texas Lobbyist Andrea McWilliams’ whole life has revolved around one building: the Texas State Capitol.

She grew up across the street in the ’70s. Her dad owned a modest burger joint on S. Congress Ave, above which the family of four lived. Her father later took over a cafeteria that was directly across the Capitol lawn in a state building; the favored lunch spot for elected Texas officials was known for its homemade German bread and fresh sweet rolls. “It was always a tradition that the first day each governor would take office, they would come eat at my dad’s place to show they were accessible to everyone,” McWilliams recalls. At 15, she took a job as a messenger at the big white dome. Later, the Capitol would serve as the site for a meet-cute with her now-husband Dean, who was a fellow staffer. Today, she has the closest consultancy office to the Capitol, she says, in the whole state. It sits just across the street.

Perennially, McWilliams ranks first in the top lobbying lists in Texas, advocating for corporate interests. Clients include nationwide heavy hitters like Neiman Marcus, Office Depot, Citibank and Verizon and Texas-based companies like Ryan LLC. She also advocated for a clean-coal project in Texas that upon completion will be “the cleanest burning coal plant in the world with a staggering 90 percent capture rate,” she says. And, after beating cancer, she defended a $ 3 billion cancer research package. “There are two general types of advocates — those that report what happens and those that make things happen. Andrea is among the very best of those that make things happen,” her client Brint Ryan says. The work has been nothing short of profitable. In 2013 alone, she made between $ 1,960,000 and $ 3,845,000 for her work, according to Texans for Public Justice.

Andrea stands alone in a skirt.

Calvin Jillson, professor of political science at Southern Methodist University

Perhaps McWilliams is a product of her place. In Texas, the corporate lobby has “always been powerful,” says Calvin Jillson, professor of political science at Southern Methodist University — at least since the LBJ era in the 1960s. But today, lobbyists might not be able to take their power and influence for granted, as talk of ethics reform abounds. Often critiqued for nontransparency ethics violations, lobbyists are under increasing scrutiny — even in Texas. Gov. Greg Abbott, says Jillson, made reform a priority in 2015, which was the “only one of his top priorities that didn’t get done. … Ethics reform is something politicians love to call for but are reluctant to do too well.” But this legislative session, a few failed 2015 bills pushing transparency measures were revived. McWilliams isn’t new to such questions, though: In 2007 and 2012, Andrea and her husband threw lavish birthday parties with now–Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and other party leaders; both times they were questioned about whether they had fully disclosed what they had spent on those legislators.

McWilliams is a smooth talker, peppering in many “dears” to our conversation. She talks of the government like its many staffers are family. And the connection isn’t entirely false — McWilliams’ mother worked 18 years for former state representative Steven Wolens as an administrative aide. That helped her get that teenage gig, and at 17 she was working for State Representative René Oliveira, filing, alphabetizing. She held down that job while earning her degree at the University of Texas–Austin and was promoted to legislative director. By 21, she became chief of staff for State Representative Richard Raymond.

Her swift ascent was sidetracked when she chose a losing horse in a race for a senate seat. But the Capitol pulled her back and she joined a firm with two other lobbyists before branching off to start her own. “A lot of people think lobbying is the stereotypical smoke-filled rooms and brother-in-law deals, but lobbying since I started has evolved tremendously,” she says. Her meetings, by contrast, are held in her home over dinner and she says she tries to paint both sides of the story for legislators.

McWilliams is a rarity for Capitol Hill, in a state where just over 20 percent of state legislators are female, compared to 24.9 percent as the national average. Looking “down the list of top lobbyists, Andrea stands alone in a skirt. The rest of them are these old boys who with slightly wider lapels could have been working the legislative corridors back in the 1950s,” Jillson says. In the United States, federal lobbyists have mostly been male, with women outnumbered approximately two to one historically, according to research organization LegiStorm. McWilliams, though, plays down any barriers she may have toppled. “It’s a lot of running after legislators, catching [them] in the hall. I have to do it in three-inch heels and a skirt,” she says.

McWilliams dipped into national politics last year, not for the first time. As an enthusiastic supporter of Ted Cruz, she became an anti-Trump voice, telling Fox Business News in March 2016: “If Donald Trump is elected, Mrs. Trump will be the first first lady that has ever posed nude.” Meanwhile, she and her husband were the youngest Bush Pioneers during George W. Bush’s first race for the White House, raising over $ 100,000, she says, and were the Texas cochairs for Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign in 2008.

When I talk with her, McWilliams is stuck at her favorite building, camped out and catching legislators over access to virtual education programs for children. “If something isn’t done right in this 140-day [session], you have to wait two years to undo it,” she says. It’s a madhouse as the legislative session wraps up. “Clients like to get things right in Texas, and then other states look to Texas and replicate it.”

How New Mexico State's basketball Aggies became Canada's team https://briefnews.eu/how-new-mexico-states-basketball-aggies-became-canadas-team/ https://briefnews.eu/how-new-mexico-states-basketball-aggies-became-canadas-team/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 19:21:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-new-mexico-states-basketball-aggies-became-canadas-team/ When the New Mexico State Aggies hit the hardwood at this year’s NCAA March Madness tournament, the southern U.S. school will have plenty of support north of the border.

Located in Las Cruces, N.M., the small public institution nestled near the Texas state line and the Mexican border is a long way from Canada.

But it’s had 11 Canadian players on its basketball roster over the past nine seasons — more than any other NCAA Division 1 school.

It will also feature the most Canadian players on any team at this year’s tournament, whose main event starts Thursday.

First-year head coach and Toronto native Paul Weir is the man behind the migration.

“I’m a rookie head coach that has found a way onto a really fun team that’s on a great run this year,” Weir told reporters soon after NMSU clinched its spot on college basketball’s biggest stage.

The former York University player is just the third Canadian to coach a Division 1 school, and the first to make the NCAA tournament since 1959.

He’s in his 10th year with the Aggies after joining the school for the 2007-08 season, and being promoted from associate to head coach last April.

“I haven’t had a whole lot of time to sit back and think about it.”

While he’s happy to pluck talent from his old backyard, Weir is more interested in a player’s potential than his passport.

“The secret is out,” he said of Canada’s basketball talent. “It’s not just that we’ve been signing Canadian kids. It’s that they’ve been coming in and having really good careers here.”

Having played and coached in Canada gives him an advantage with recruits. “I was able to develop a lot of relationships that have allowed me to get in the door with some of these players.”

‘It’ll feel like home’

Montreal’s Hernst Laroche, the first of Weir’s Canadian recruits, said, “When I went there it was like a new world for me.”

Laroche arrived at NMSU in 2008. He played three seasons with the Aggies before going on to a professional career in Europe, and now he plays in France.

“He told me I’d get better. I’d get my diploma and that we’d go to the tournament,” Laroche said, remembering Weir’s recruiting pitch. All those predictions came true.

By the 2011-12 season, the team’s Canadian contingent had grown to five.

“I told them. ‘Once you come here, it’ll feel like home,'” said Laroche.

Current player Matt Taylor arrived from Brampton, Ont., in the fall of 2013 knowing little of the school other than its Canadian hoops history.

“I actually had no idea where New Mexico was. I thought it was in Mexico, to be honest,” he said.

He’s one of four Canadian players on this year’s team, a number the school has maintained or bettered in each of the past seven seasons.

“They’ve almost adopted us,” he said of NMSU’s fans. “We see Canadian flags through the crowd in games. I’ve had people call me Air Canada.”

College basketball’s biggest stage

And the Aggies’ Canadian contingent has given those fans plenty to cheer about. The team has won six conference tournaments in the past eight seasons.

Playing at NMSU also thrusts Canadians into the brightest spotlight in college basketball: the NCAA tournament, better known as March Madness.

Apart from being a stimulus for office pools across the country, the tournament is among the marquee events of the American sports calendar, drawing millions of viewers over three weeks.

“To see how many people were there and seeing legends like Chris Webber and Reggie Miller commentating — it’s really breathtaking. It’s an experience that you can’t even explain unless you’ve been there,” Taylor said of his first tournament experience in 2015.

And the competition has helped launch the pro careers of former NMSU players. Six Canadian NMSU alumni have gone on to pro careers after leaving the school, a career path Taylor intends to follow after the season ends.

“You put in a lot of work to get to that level … it’s important to take advantage of that opportunity.”

His loss will reduce NMSU’s Canadian contingent next season.

But the small school`s niche as Canada South has helped it capture some attention and victories on the court.

“We all take pride in the fact that there have been a lot of us down here and we’ve had a lot of success,” said Weir.
