Blizzard is keeping up its habit of marking the anniversaries of major games. The original StarCraft is turning 20 on March 31st, and the studio is promising a slew of extras across its games to mark the occasion, including the classic real-time strategy title itself. You can log in to StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft II after March 6th to get commemorative interface skins, plus portraits and decals if you sign into SCII by April 6th. And if you’re not particularly big on those titles, there are plenty of other ways to obtain perks — you might even prefer them to the ones you get with StarCraft proper.
Overwatch players will have access to a special Sarah Kerrigan Ghost skin for Widowmaker (see above) between March 6th and April 3rd, for starters. You can also get a Battlecruiser-themed pet in Diablo III (from March 6th onward), one of several StarCraft-themed pets in World of Warcraft (March 31st to April 6th), anniversary portraits in Heroes of the Storm (March 27th through April 7th) and play a StarCraft-inspired Tavern Brawl (March 21st to March 25th).
You can also expect anniversary Twitch streams on March 30th and 31st. The 31st will also see Blizzard release StarCraft is Life: A Celebration, a short YouTube film touching on the memories of the game’s “biggest fans.”
The first StarCraft game seems positively ancient at this point (it was released when Windows gaming and internet multiplayer were relatively young), but its influence on the game industry can be felt to this day. It’s not just that was a definitive game in the genre, with a memorable story and a significant expansion of the formula first seen in early Warcraft games. In many ways, StarCraft was the title that set eSports in motion — it became a phenomenon in South Korea, with sponsorships and live broadcasts well before Twitch streaming took off. Even if you’ve never once dealt with a Zerg rush, there’s probably a game you play that owes a debt to what Blizzard achieved in 1998.
Celebrate 20 years of StarCraft with us! #SC20

StarCraft II thought it had the secret to delivering a truly accessible version of its predecessor. The original game’s troop-management battles are unmatched in terms of balance, so the sequel directed more attention to QoL tweaks like resource management, unit assignments, and movement pathing. In short, you could click a little less, and otherwise, you were still tied largely to the same gameplay systems and faction differences (aside from some significant rhythm-shifting changes).
But what if a StarCraft sequel, spin-off, or shameless homage took the entire game formula apart, then put its LEGO pieces back together to make a new, more approachable shape? No RTS game in the past two decades has reimagined the genre quite like the incredible Tooth and Tail, a years-in-the-making project from IGF Award winner Andy Schatz. It’s as if three-man studio Pocketwatch Games looked at the mouse cursor in RTS games, made a joke about turning it into an actual mouse, and then called their own bluff.
The resulting game sees players face off in asymmetric explore-and-exploit battles that add speed, accessibility, and surprises (along with cute and, uh, cannibalistic critters) to the RTS world. Yet the depth’s still here. Say “goodbye!” to zillions of hotkeys and skill trees. Say “hello!” to the first RTS game that legitimately works with a standard gamepad (and even shines as a split-screen versus battler).

Activision Blizzard could benefit from a strong response to its franchise reboots, including Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the upcoming StarCraft Remastered.
The two games — as well as last year’s reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered — show the demand for retro titles that make gamers feel nostalgic for bygone years.
The Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is a remake of the first three games in the series, which has generated more than 50 million copies sold since 1996. Activision launched the game on June 30, the last day of its second quarter. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing (a division of Activision Blizzard), said that the game was the No. 1 title in June even though it had such brief sales in that month. It’s received some great reviews, including from us.
The title was also the No. 1 game on Sony’s PlayStation store in the month of July. It contributed meaningful results to Activision Blizzard’s earnings in the second quarter, and it is expected to continue selling in the third quarter.

“Crash has surpassed all of our expectations,” Hirshberg said.
Meanwhile, Blizzard plans to launch StarCraft Remastered, a reboot of the 1998 game with updated 4K graphics, on August 14. That title will debut on the Windows PC and the Mac on Blizzard’s online service.
Both titles had relatively short development cycles and smaller teams, at least in comparison to bigger titles such as the latest Call of Duty and Destiny 2 games. But they can help generate more revenues in addition to bigger releases coming this year, such as Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2.

StarCraft used to be the belle of the ball when it came to eSports, but times have changed. While it still has a viable competitive scene, you’re more likely to hear about Dota 2, League of Legends or even a classic rival like CS:GO. Don’t tell that to Blizzard, though — at least in South Korea, it looks like the StarCraft series might be in for a revival among pros. The developer just held an eSports history event in Busan to mark the impending launch of StarCraft: Remastered, and… well, just look at the photo above. Blizzard tells us over 10,000 people watched in person, and 500,000 watched through both streaming and TV broadcasts. That’s not exactly what you’d expect from a game whose competitive appeal is on the decline.
To be clear, the circumstances were virtually ideal. South Korea is the heart of StarCraft fandom, and the event included a mix of both legendary players (such as BoxeR and NaDa) and current stars (like Bisu, Flash and Jaedong). If any StarCraft gathering was going to attract a huge audience, it was going to be this one. Still, this shows the hold that the real-time strategy game continues to have on a public that supposedly moved on to MOBAs like Dota 2. You may not see Protoss-versus-Zerg battles take the top billing at the next big tournament, but they’ll likely stick around for as long as StarCraft has some kind of cultural relevance.

Starcraft‘s long-overdue facelift will make its debut on Monday 14 August. The remastered version boasts a raft of enhancements including 4K resolution, improved sound and rebooted dialogue, all designed to make the game look a bit more shiny and polished, while essentially remaining exactly the same.
Priced at $ 14.99/£12.99 and available for Windows and Mac, the classic strategy game also features a new matchmaking and leaderboard system, player profiles and the ability to save to the cloud, all while maintaining the same gameplay that’s somehow resulted in a two-decade-long fan obsession.
Don’t worry, puritans. You’ll be pleased to hear it’ll be possible to switch between the original and the remastered game at the touch of a button, while players embracing the makeover can pre-order through the Blizzard Shop to get their hands on three unique building skins for use in the remastered version.

SANTA MONICA, CaliforniaâBefore giving us a world-premiere look at StarCraft Remastered‘s gameplay, the franchise’s holders at Blizzard rattled off a few major rules for how the game would be made. “Blend classic with modern.” “Community’s voice.” One of the buzz phrases made Blizzard Classic Games Producer Pete Stilwell laugh: “Don’t be disruptive.” “That’s how I was told to say, ‘Don’t fuck it up,'” he said.
Stilwell had already set that PR guidance aflame when he loudly declared his development team’s mantra of preserving original games’ systems and mechanics at all costs. “We’re not here to change classics from a gameplay perspective,” Stilwell said. “We’re not here to fuck with that. We say, ‘don’t fuck it up,’ all the time. Do not ruin this game.”
The Blizzard Classic team appears to have pulled that off with a game that, for better or for worse, plays, feels, and, in a few cases, looks just like the 1998 version. StarCraft Remastered‘s announced price, $ 14.99/ÂŁ12.99, reflects that aesthetic, as it has mostly been built to slap new paint on old mechanics. But executing that “plays exactly the same” missionâwhile making the new game (launching August 14 on PC and Mac) look demonstrably improved over the original and sneaking a few changes inâwasn’t a complete breeze.

StarCraft: Remastered is set to offer a full graphical overhaul of the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion, although Blizzard have stressed that no big gameplay changes will be made.
The studio have spoken more on the subject, confirming that there main focus has been on key areas, although fans may not notice all the changes.
How did you balance updating the unit models with staying true to the original ones?
NEWS: BLIZZARD REVEAL OVERWATCH SEASON 4 END DATE
Commenting on updating unit models with the new 4K tech, Senior 3D Artist Brian Sousa had this to say: We kept the same silhouettes because we wanted you to immediately recognize them.Â
âItâs a double-edged sword; when we were first showing the game to people, if they started by looking at it in HD, they werenât impressed. Itâs StarCraft.Â
âIn their mind, thatâs what StarCraft had always looked like. We had to say, âNo no no, we went back to the original units, look: it was only 32 pixels.âÂ
âNow you can see it in 4K and totally see the difference. The fact that people couldnât tell the difference shows me that we did our job rightâwe stayed so true to the original that it mirrors playersâ memories.â
On redoing the visual effects, Brian revealed that Blizzard are completely revamping the designs, revealing that some things needed to be replaced in the game to warrant the Remastered project.
âThe effects in StarCraft: Remastered are being created with the best effects programs we have,â he added.Â
âThe fire looks like fire, the explosions are awesome. The new nuclear explosion is amazing, it looks really good.
âOriginally, our focus was: âLetâs do the effects 100% true to the original.â But then we started realizing . . . these original effects donât actually look very good by todayâs standards.Â
âTheyâre nice, but, you know, theyâre just four colors! Weâre not going to make a four-color explosion now, weâre going to use all the colors we can.â
Other updates will include new 4K functionality, illustrations to enhance storytelling in the StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War campaign missions; advanced matchmaking; full connectivity to Blizzardâs gaming network for social features and updates; cloud saving for campaign progress, custom maps, replays, and keybinds and support for eight new languages in addition to the original five.
While the exact StarCraft Remastered release date and price has yet to be announced, a summer launch is on the cards.
That should mean that we hear something very soon from Blizzard team, even if it means a delay in launch.
Phoenix One Games hopes to build their realm with their first fantasy mobile strategy game, Guardian Kingdoms.
The mobile strategy genre has proven to be incredibly lucrative, with Supercell (Clash of Clans) reporting $ 2.3 billion of revenue last year and Machine Zone (Game of War) bringing in an estimated $ 590,000 revenue daily. Since these games launched in 2012 and 2013 respectively, competing studios have attempted to cash in on the popularity of mobile strategy. According to market research firm Verto Analytics, action/strategy games are the fourth most popular genre on mobile, with a comparatively high number of user sessions per month.
However, Phoenix One claims that Guardian Kingdoms offers something different from the other mobile strategy games on the market. Alongside mechanics from Clash of Clans and other similar apps, Guardian Kingdoms provides more control over individual units and heroes so players can execute real-time strategy. It also emphasizes timing in a way that the studio hopes will attract fans of the overall RTS genre.
“At the core, [Guardian Kingdoms]Â is still a base builder type game similar to [Clash of Clans]Â but with gameplay/battles more geared towards RTS players,” said Kevin Zhang, vice president of Phoenix One, describing Guardian Kingdoms as more of a “blend of StarCraft/Age of Empires and Clash of Clans.”
Mobile games is a tough market to stand out in. Even five years after Supercell released Clash of Clans, it still ranks high in downloads. And, according to Pocket Gamer, over 2,500 games are submitted per month to the Apple App Store, making it that much harder to draw attention to new titles. This is something Zhang is familiar with; before Phoenix One, he was previously at Kabam, a mobile game studio that released such titles as Marvel Contest of Champions. Their secret weapon, they’re hoping, is to combine the mobile-native deployment mechanics from other strategy games with synchronous gameplay.
“On a high level, our primary differentiator is the real-time tech we’ve built,” said Zhang. “This enables our game to be more multiplayer friendly â players can battle together using thousands of troops in real-time in the same fight, each battle is uniquely different and more dynamic/fun.”
Founded in 2016, Phoenix One Games is a mobile games studio with experienced industry vets from Blizzard, Kabam, EA, and Zynga.
