J.A. Happ threw 96 pitches in Toronto’s opening day loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon. He was happy with all but one of them. Happ missed on a fastball to Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning and the 2017 NL MVP launched it over the right-centre field fence for a two-run homer, putting the Yankees up early en route to a 6-1 win over the Blue Jays. Stanton, the Yankees’ prized off-season acquisition, homered twice in the game and drove in four runs in his New York debut. “I tried to throw a two-seamer and I just pulled it a little bit. That’s a pitch I’d like to have back,” said Happ, who threw 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs [two earned], four hits and one walk while striking out five in his first career opening day start. “I think the reality is sometimes one mistake is one too many to win a ballgame.” Catcher Russell Martin agreed with the veteran left-hander’s assessment. “Really if there was one pitch we could have back it would be the one to Stanton. Kind of a two-seamer away that pulled and caught the middle of the plate and he put a good swing on it,” Martin said. “But overall I liked what he did. We just didn’t score enough runs for him.” Luis Severino had a lot to do with that. The Yankees starter struck out seven and held Toronto to just one hit and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. Brett Gardner also homered and Gary Sanchez drove in another run for New York (1-0). Kevin Pillar supplied Toronto’s (0-1) offence with a solo homer off reliever Dellin Betances in the eighth inning. All-star third baseman Josh Donaldson, who was slowed by a shoulder issue early in spring training, struggled with weak throws across the diamond throughout the game, including one in the sixth inning that pulled first baseman Justin Smoak off the bag. Smoak recovered, stretching his toe to the base to get the out, which was upheld after video review. Manager John Gibbons said Donaldson’s arm “feels kinda dead, not injured.” “I’ve been feeling it a little bit all spring, it’s just kinda been ongoing back and forth,” Donaldson elaborated. “But I don’t have any pain or anything like that so that’s always good. It’s just getting the strength back.” Donaldson said he’ll be cautious with the shoulder and Gibbons suggested he’d DH his star third baseman until he feels better. A quick fix would be ideal for Toronto, which is already without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for the foreseeable future. The team placed Tulowitzki on the 60-day disabled list with bone spurs in both his heels earlier in the day. He hasn’t played since sustaining an ankle injury last July. The Blue Jays were outhit 11-2 and struck out 12 times Thursday. The miserable offensive showing matched the weather conditions in Toronto, where rain drizzled outside the domed Rogers Centre all day. Donaldson chalked up the team’s struggles to Severino’s dominant performance. “When you have Severino pitching like he was today it’s going to be difficult,” he said. “We have to disrupt him somehow, get some runners on base. Opening day is unique to the extent where it’s kinda hard to get into your routine. You have a lot of things going on before the game [but] Severino had a very nice game.” Stanton earned his third RBI in the fifth, smacking a line drive double off Canadian reliever John Axford to cash in Aaron Judge from first base. Sanchez followed with a run-scoring double and Gardner hit a solo homer off Danny Barnes in the seventh for a 5-0 Yankees lead. Stanton’s second home run, a solo shot, came off Tyler Clippard in the ninth. “You’ve got to pitch them tough,” Martin said of how to navigate the tough Yankees lineup. “Baseball’s one of those games where if you do make a mistake and there’s a good hitter up there he’s going to make you pay. … The key is still to be aggressive but just out-think them.” Pillar’s eighth-inning homer was just Toronto’s second hit of the game. Curtis Granderson, who began the day with a first-inning fielding error in left, hit a single to centre field for his first hit as a Blue Jay in the fourth inning. The game began with a touching tribute to Roy Halladay, the former Blue Jays ace who died last November when the small sport plane he was piloting crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. His No. 32 was retired by the organization, marked by the unfurling of a banner from the centre-field rafters. Halladay’s sons, 17-year-old Braden and 13-year-old Ryan, placed the game ball on the mound instead of throwing a ceremonial first pitch.

The St. Louis Cardinals on Friday released a statement saying they tried to trade for Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, but Stanton declined to waive his no-trade clause.
The Marlins have been exploring trades for Stanton this offseason as they prepare for a rebuild, but Stanton has limited the teams he would accept being traded to. According to the Cardinals, they did not make Stanton’s list.
“We had an agreement to acquire Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins, subject to him waiving his no-trade clause,” the Cardinals chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. “We have been notified that he will not waive his no-trade clause to come to St. Louis. While we are disappointed in his decision, we will continue to make every effort to improve our club for the upcoming season.”
The statement is odd in that it serves only to show the Cardinals made an attempt to acquire Stanton. Stanton, of course, did nothing wrong in exercising an option the Marlins gave him when he signed a record 13-year, $ 325 million contract.
The statement is also a bit unusual as, across all sports, there are failed trade attempts, and teams don’t often put out statements to announce them.
“We felt this was a great landing spot for him, but it was not meant to be,” President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said in the statement.
According to reports, Stanton’s list of possible trade destinations includes the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs, though the list appears to be subject to change at any time. Stanton was reportedly weighing whether he would accept a deal to the San Francisco Giants, but reportedly crossed them off the list, too.

The Giancarlo Stanton trade sweepstakes are starting to clear up as two heavyweights have dropped out of the race and the biggest heavyweight of them all just jumped in with both feet.
On the same day that both the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants announced they were no longer in contention for Stanton, numerous reports on Friday night said the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins have entered into serious negotiations for the MVP slugger.
Ken Rosenthal of The Atlantic was the first to report that the Yankees are now “in play” for Stanton. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports noted that no trade is done yet, but that one source was “confident it’s moving towards that.”
Rosenthal also reported that a source said the deal is “not close,” but said “any Stanton deal will be complex” and the “smoke is real.”
According to Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, Stanton’s hometown Los Angeles Dodgers also remain a potential trade destination, but that the talks with the Yankees are in a “more advanced stage.”
Earlier on Friday, Stanton narrowed the list of teams he would accept trades to four teams, including the Bronx Bombers. Stanton has a full no-trade clause in his contract and rejected trades to both the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. Both teams were said to have agreed to deals with the Marlins.
According to Craig Mish, Stanton would also approve trades to the Chicago Cubs or Houston Astros. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Marlins are still talking to other teams besides the Yankees, but that none of those talks are serious.
The Yankees were initially considered a long shot as they had made it clear that they wanted to keep their payroll in 2018 under the luxury-tax threshold of $ 197 million.
“I’ve said many times, for a number of reasons, it’s important for us to get under the cap this year,” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told reporters in November, via ESPN. “It’s absolutely a goal of mine — to be under.”
In addition, outfield is not a position of need for the Yankees as they already have Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner, and Aaron Hicks. But it seems clear, if the chance to acquire an MVP in his prime comes along, the Yankees are going to take a swing.
Of course, one thing that could help a potential deal is the familiarity of the Yankees by both new Marlins owner Derek Jeter and new Marlins exec Gary Denbo, who is said to know the Yankees farm system “as well as anyone on the planet.“

The beginning of the weekend brings sad news as veteran character actor Harry Dean Stanton died at age 91.
Harry Dean Stanton wasn’t a name that many audience members would know unless they were huge cinephiles, but he was a welcome presence in any film, often playing bit parts in various movies and TV shows over the years, effortlessly bringing them to life with his signature succinct charm. If you need a better idea of how great Stanton was at his job, film critic Roger Ebert once said, “No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad.”
We remember the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton below.
The news of Harry Dean Stanton dead comes from Variety, who confirmed the actor passed away of natural causes in his Los Angeles home on Friday.
Stanton was born in Kentucy to a tobacco farmer, living a rural life before heading off to be a cook in the Navy in the Pacific theatre during World War II. After that, he studied journalism, only to drop out and beging acting classes in the Pasadena Playhouse in 1949.
In his early career throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, Stanton appeared in countless television shows such as The Adventures of Tintin, The Rifleman, Johnny Ringo, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, Gunslinger, Have Gun – Will Travel, Bonanza, Rawhide, The Fugitive,The Andy Griffith Show, Mannix, Adam-12, Petticoat Junction and Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color. But he wasn’t limited to the small screen in his work.
Harry Dean Stanton also played small parts in movies like Cool Hand Luke and In the Heat of the Night, the former giving him a chance to show his singing chops with the gospel song “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”, the latter role being an uncredited one as a police officer. But it was the 1970s that brought him an influx of film roles and took him away from television for nearly the entire decade.
Stanton appeared as an American soldier in the war comedy Kelly’s Heroes in 1970, a gay hitchhiker in Two-Lane Blacktop in 1971 and an outlaw in Dillinger in 1973. Those were his better known movie roles, but he also took parts in cult favorites such as Cockfighter and Farewell My Lovely. Plus, he also appeared in the likes of The Intruders, Cisco Pike, Zandy’s Bride and Win, Place or Steal. Stanton even had a thankless role in The Godfather Part II as FBI Man #1, a character he would reprise in The Godfather: A Novel for Television in 1977.
It wasn’t until 1979 that Harry Dean Stanton would get one of his most recognizable roles in cinema as the Nostromo crew member Brett in Ridley Scott’s Alien. It was just the beginning of a run in the 1980s when Stanton would take more prominent roles in some staple films of the 1980s. Stanton can be seen in John Carpenter’s Escape from New York, Alex Cox’s Repo Man, John Milius’ Red Dawn, Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, and of course, John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink as Molly Ringwald’s father. But certainly the most prominent was his first lead role in Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Other notable appearances include Down Periscope, Fire Down Below, The Green Mile, The Pledge, Anger Management, Inland Empire, and Twin Peaks: Firewalk with Me. Stanton would make some sizeable television appearances as well, including that of Roman Grant on HBO’s Big Love, not to mention recently reprising his Twin Peaks role as Carl Rodd on the series revival from Showtime this year. But more general audiences will probably recognize Stanton from a brief part where he interacts with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner in The Avengers in 2012.
Stanton is one of the finest character actors, gaining acclaim from some of the most respected actors and always mentioned as a talent to be admired in Hollywood. He even became the namesake for a popular movie trivia game lovingly called Last Man Stanton on the comedy podcast Doug Loves Movies with Doug Benson. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more respected actor in the industry who wasn’t lauded with awards and iconic roles. Stanton was a genuinely good man and an actor who put in the work and got the job done with terrific results.

Veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton, whose TV roles included HBO’s Big Love and Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival, has died at the age of 91.
Stanton passed away of natural causes in Los Angeles on Friday, according to our sister site Variety. A familiar face to movie fans, Stanton crafted a Hollywood career that spanned six decades with memorable roles in films like the Molly Ringwald teen drama Pretty in Pink (as Andie’s dad Jack), Repo Man, Escape From New York, Alien and The Godfather Part II. But he made his presence felt on the small screen as well.
Stanton’s early TV career included myriad one-offs and short arcs on Westerns such as Laramie, The Lawless Years, Bonanza, Rawhide and Gunsmoke. His longest small-screen run came on HBO’s polygamist drama Big Love, where he co-starred in the first three seasons as Roman Grant, a self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the Juniper Creek compound. (Stanton’s Big Love co-star Bill Paxton passed away earlier this year at the age of 61.)
He also recurred on Getting On and, this past summer, reprised his Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me film role of trailer park owner Carl Rodd in a handful of Twin Peaks: The Return episodes. Plus, he made a cameo as himself on CBS’ Two and a Half Men in 2004 and played a repo man (a nod to his Repo Man role) in a 2010 episode of Chuck.

Not every unanswered question in a movie deserves an elaborate fan theory “explaining” away plot holes or filling in background gaps that the movie purposefully didn’t fill. Sometimes a movie is just a movie. But one Toy Story fan theory gained some traction because it came from an unusual source: someone who worked on the original film.
Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton has since debunked the theory, but for the conspiracy theorists out there who just can’t accept that Andy’s dad simply isn’t a factor in the Toy Story movies, here’s a look at what one man claims happened to that character.
This theory comes from Mike Mozart, a toy designer who worked on the first Toy Story movie as a consultant. According to Mozart (via io9), Pixar’s former head writer Joe Ranft told Mozart all about the secret history of Andy’s dad, and Mozart recounted it for a YouTuber below.
If you’re like me and couldn’t stand watching more than 30 seconds of that video, io9 breaks it down for us. The story goes that Andy’s dad, whose name was also Andy, was the one kid in the world who received a one-of-a-kind Woody doll in a promotional giveaway; the doll wasn’t mass produced because the TV show on which it was based was apparently cancelled before they had the chance to manufacture them.
But because this is a Disney/Pixar story and their movie parent characters often suffer cruel fates, Andy’s dad reportedly contracted polio when he was a kid. His toys were destroyed, except for Woody, Mr. Potato Head, and Slinky, all of which Andy Sr. hid in a box. The story goes that he recovered from polio, married Andy’s mom, fathered Andy Jr. and Molly, but contracted Post-Polio Syndrome, and passed the box of toys down to Andy Jr. before he died.
And because the theory fills in some questions that nitpickers have had with the franchise, it’s an attractive one for those who look to “solve” movies instead of just watching them:
This explains several things from later on in the series: why Woody doesn’t remember he was part of Cowboy Crunchies’ Woody’s Roundup, since he was created right before the show was cancelled; why the handwriting on Buzz’s foot is different than Woody’s, because they were from two different people; why Al saw Woody as so valuable… since he was a one-of-a-kind toy (it does make you wonder what other Woody toys there were, though, since there were toys for Jesse, Stinkin’ Pete, and Bullseye).
But Andrew Stanton calls BS on this whole thing, and considering he was a co-writer on all three Toy Story movies and has likely had detailed conversations with Pixar people about this exact topic, I’m inclined to believe him:
Complete and utter fake news. Everyone go back to your homes. Nothing to see here, folks. #Iwasthere https://t.co/06j37YKKt2

Personally, it’s not difficult at all for me to watch the Toy Story movies and just take them at face value. But despite Stanton’s firm denial of this theory, I imagine there will be those who refuse to accept the truth. Anyway, if I’m going to entertain a fan theory as truth, it’s far more entertaining to think about the suggestion found in Stanton’s Twitter mentions that implies Andy’s father was the Zodiac Killer. Go big or go home with your fan theories, people.
