Manchester United are ready to head in a different direction should they miss out on top-table European football.
United sit EIGHTH in the Premier League — a staggering 12 points behind rivals Manchester City after Sunday’s 3-1 derby defeat.
He has been left in no doubt that Champions League football next season is critical to his future.
‘WE ARRIVE IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES’: JOSE OFFERS REASON FOR DERBY DEFEAT
REVEALED: LIVERPOOL STAR EMBROILED IN MATCH BETTING SCANDAL
Old Trafford executives still admire Mauricio Pochettino, but it looks almost impossible to get him out of the water-tight contract he signed with Tottenham in the summer.
Both United and Real Madrid are keen to snare the Argentine but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will scrap tooth and nail to hang onto his man.
Madrid responded to interim boss Santiago Solari’s four-game winning streak by handing him a two-year deal to become Julen Lopetegui’s full-time successor.
But Solari — a close pal of former Argentina team-mate Poch — is understood to be willing to step into the background if the Spurs chief decides to head to Spain next summer.
Mourinho signed a new deal at Old Trafford last season, but the penalty clause for firing him is a year’s salary — around £15m.
HOW? CITY BOSS FINED FOR PRAISING REFEREE
‘SIDING WITH THE FASCISTS’: SUSPENDED ‘RACIST’ HAMMERS COACH REINSTATED
The former Chelsea boss is fuming behind the scenes as he believes United’s set-up is light years behind some big-spending rivals.
He has been moaning about standards at the club and told friends that everything is “second rate”.
Mourinho has been scathing about their recruitment and scouting network, along with the club’s failure to be in the mix for the top players when it comes to negotiations.
There is also frustration with the club’s travel arrangements, highlighted by their late arrival for Champions League group games with Juventus and Valencia this season.
Although United executives have given Mourinho credit for a recent upturn in league form, Champions League football is crucial.

The possibility of a no-deal Brexit made the Ministry of Defence “dust off” blueprints to use of army trucks and helicopters to deliver key supplies to far flung parts of the UK – something usually reserved for civil emergencies, like severe weather.
However a source inside the department said they have not yet received “a formal request” to assist the civilian authorities, according to the Sunday Times.
An unnamed minister downplayed the alarmist nature of the news to the paper, saying that the government was “just being realistic” about the potential pitfalls of a no-deal, adding that the army would only be called in if blockages at ports were preventing the supply of food, fuel, and medicines from entering the country.
“There is a lot of civil contingency planning around the prospect of no deal. That’s not frightening the horses, that’s just being utterly realistic,” they told the Times report.
Without securing a new Free Trade Agreement with the EU, a no-deal, the UK would revert to World Trade Organization rules resulting in the imposing of tariffs on goods that the UK sends to the EU, and on goods the EU sends to the UK.
This lack of “frictionless trade” could see a 10-mile-long motorway in south-east England turned into a “holding area” for goods vehicles, as up to 10,000 trucks a day would suddenly require customs checks to enter the EU, according to the Financial Times.

The pro-EU Labour MP David Lammy took aim at the news on Twitter saying: “God, help us. This is not coming from Remainers. This is not project fear. Pro-Brexit Ministers are drawing up blueprints for the army to deliver food, fuel and medicine if we leave the EU with no deal.”
“We have a duty to prevent this self-immolation,” he added.

However, the former Brexit secretary David Davis, who resigned from the position earlier this month over his dissatisfaction with a possible soft Brexit deal, dismissed the story as an attempt to scare people in order to secure a Free Trade Agreement “which will tank the economy.”

Talk of shortages of food and medicines in the wake of a possible no-deal has come to the fore recently, with NHS bosses planning to stockpile key drugs and blood supplies in the event the service has to go on a permanent winter-crisis footing.
Supermarkets, meanwhile have told suppliers to make plans for a no-deal which could see them stockpile goods such a tea and coffee for periods much longer than normal.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch just got even more optimistic on the stock market, but is on standby for any reason to be less bullish.
The equity strategists led by Savita Subramanian raised their year-end target on the S&P 500 to 3,000 from 2,800, implying an 11% gain for the market this year. The index has already risen 6% this year to within 3% of where the average year-end forecast on Wall Street projected it would end the year.
Underpinning BAML’s new forecast is evidence that investors aren’t heading for the exits anytime soon.
The firm’s survey of fund managers shows that cash positions are at a five-year low. The so-called great rotation out of bonds and into stocks still hasn’t happened, as the bond market continues to extend its three-decade bull market. And although stocks are expensive by many valuation measures, they’re still historically cheap compared to bonds.
BAML’s higher forecast was also driven by the recently passed tax cut plan, which the firm expects will contribute to 6% growth in normalized earnings per share.
But there’s still the nagging question of when the bull market will run out of steam, or before that, when the market resumes having regular pullbacks. After all, as Subramanian said, more than half of the firm’s bear-market signals have been triggered.
“We are watching for signs to temper our enthusiasm on the S&P 500,” Subramanian wrote in a note on Tuesday. “And with 11 of our 19 bear market signposts having been triggered, the risk-adjusted reward of stocks appears less compelling.”
But the strategists don’t see any reason to panic now. “Note that since 1968, at least 80% of our signposts have been signaled ahead of prior market peaks,” Subramanian said.
Moreover, missing out on late stage of a bull market has historically been a costly mistake; the S&P 500 has returned 49% on average in the 24 months before every market peak since 1937.

Hundreds of Neo-Nazis are expected to gather in Berlin to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Hitler’s first deputy and right-hand man Rudolf Hess. A counter-rally has also been announced in the German capital.
The rally started at 12pm local time and heavily-armored police already separated the Neo-Nazis from counter-demonstration in the capital, AP reported.
Some 500 people are expected to join the rally in the Spandau area of Berlin, German media reported.
Hess, a prominent Nazi, hanged himself at the age of 93 in Spandau prison August 17, 1987, roughly 30 years ago.
Berlin police gave permission to far-right extremists to hold the rally in the city. However, police told the organizers that the protest should be held with certain restrictions.
The protesters are not allowed to glorify Hess “in word, writing or image” or use military music during the march. Also the number of banners have been restricted – one for every 50 participants.
The demonstrators are allowed to use two pieces by Beethoven and two by Wagner during the march, the court order said, as cited by Der Tagesspiegel newspaper.
Berliner Kurier newspaper released a route, which the demonstration should reportedly use.
“I regret nothing,” a banner held by demonstrators read during the neo-Nazi march.
The measures are aimed at balancing free speech rights and rights of counter-demonstrators, Sven Richwin, a Berlin lawyer told AP.
“Anything intimidating is ‘verboten,’ [Eng: forbidden]” Richwin added.
In the meantime, left-wing groups are holding a counter-protest, expected to draw some 1,000 people, in Spandau, AP reported.
READ MORE: Britain tried to free Hitler’s first deputy from Spandau imprisonment
Hess was an important figure during Adolf Hitler’s era. He was the deputy Führer from 1933 until he embarked on a covert mission to Britain in 1941 in an effort to secure a peace treaty between the UK and Nazi Germany.
He was given a life sentence during the Nuremberg trials, a series of military tribunals held by the Allies which prosecuted prominent Nazis for war crimes.
Hess was transferred to Spandau Prison following the trials and spent there some 40 years until his death. He was the only Spandau inmate during his last 20 years of imprisonment. Neo-Nazi theories claim that Hess was murdered and his followers consider him a martyr.

A solar flare has sent a blast of magnetic particles hurtling toward Earth – but don’t worry, we’re not set for a mass extinction event, rather a dazzling light show above the US and Canada.
Solar flares, which are mostly harmless ejections of energy from the surface of the sun, send clouds of particles made up of electrons and ions into our atmosphere. They usually reach our planet within a day or two, treating earthlings to majestic ‘auroras’, fluorescent light shows caused by collisions between sun particles and nitrogen and oxygen.
Solar flares have potential to be far more damaging, however.
The most powerful flare recorded to date was in 1859. Known as the ‘Carrington Event’, the solar flare knocked out telegraph systems all over Europe and North America. The resulting auroras were said to have been so bright that they could be seen as far south as Sub-Saharan Africa.
If such a powerful geomagnetic storm were to strike today, it would likely knock out power grids, communications and satellite technology, potentially causing trillions of dollars worth of damage to the global economy.

According to space weather experts, this latest outburst is unlikely to cause much disruption here on Earth.
Relatively mild, this solar flare has been described as a ‘moderate’ G2 geomagnetic storm by space weather watchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
People residing in latitudes 55°N – which includes North America, Great Britain, Ireland and parts of Russia – could experience some power surges. Most will likely be treated to an breathtaking display of aurora.

The moment the flare left its host was captured by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO), an instrument part of a joint NASA-European Space Agency mission studying our sun.
A coronagraph is a telescope designed to block the blinding light of the sun in order to study emissions from it.

News of the solar flare come two days after NASA announced the discovery of a gigantic ‘hole’ in the sun. This massive sunspot, a mind-boggling 75,000 miles wide, is bigger than Earth.
The amazing footage was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory between July 5-11. And while such phenomena are a common occurrence, they are less likely to happen as the sun heads towards ‘solar minimum’, a period of low solar activity throughout an 11-year cycle.

Hawaii News Now reports that Shirley Yamauchi says she paid almost $ 1,000 each for two tickets because children over the age of 2 are required to have their own seat.
She boarded the plane in Houston with her son, Taizo, and they took their seats.
The Kapolei Middle School teacher says a flight attendant came to check if Taizo was present before a standby passenger showed up with a ticket with the toddler’s seat number.

Yamauchi says she told a flight attendant about the problem, but the woman just shrugged, said the flight was full, and walked away.
The company issued an apology five days after the incident.

Short stories are hard to pull off well. Creators, whether they’re authors or directors, have to strip their story down to its most essential elements, all while making sure their characters can still grab the attention of their audiences. A short film called Standby is a brilliant example of how a storyteller can do just that.
Written and directed by Charlotte Regan, Standby is about two British police officers on the job. I don’t want to say any more than that before you watch it, so go ahead and come back once you’ve done that.
Done?
Okay.
Standby does something really clever: it sets the camera up on the dashboard and doesn’t move it. As we follow Gary (Andrew Paul) and Jenny (Alexa Morden) on their daily routine, it’s up to the viewer to infer what happens based on how they’re acting against one another as they get in and out of the car over the course of their time together. Gary, the senior officer, has been paired with Jenny, and it’s clear from the start that he’s not thrilled with being paired up with a rookie. But they drive around, Gary warms up as Jenny mouths along to a song on the radio, gets coffee, and gets her heart broken. The ending is genuinely heartbreaking, and sets up an utterly perfect ending that takes you right back to the beginning.
The film is only five minutes long, but it crams the life of an entire relationship into those short minutes, and does so as effectively as a much longer film. What’s more, this is all largely done without dialogue: Paul and Morden convey an incredible amount just by their glances and body motion. It’s easy to see why it’s won a bunch of awards (including a BAFTA nomination), and why it was selected for big festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, and others.
Hat tip to Tony Zhou for pointing this out on Twitter.
