The automaker has teamed up with an advocacy group, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), to develop recommended principles for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) car emissions standards from the 2027 model year onward. The guidelines are meant to accelerate EV adoption in a socially conscious way — and, of course, help GM's bottom line.

The brand wants standards that ensure at least half of new vehicles sold by are zero-emissions by 2030, with a 60 percent reduction in emissions across a lineup compared to 2021. They need to address multiple pollution sources (such as CO2, nitrogen oxides and particles) and be "performance-based," GM argues. The company also believes there should be an optional pathway to speed up the launch of breakthrough emissions-reducing technology, and that standards should ensure the benefits of reduced pollution apply to everyone (such as vulnerable communities). Not surprisingly, GM hopes for tight coordination between the public and private realms, including complementary investments.

GM and the EDF want a quick decision process. They'd like the standards to be proposed this fall, and completed by fall 2023. The standards should last until 2032 at a minimum, the partners said, but they also hoped the EPA would extend that to 2035.

There might not be much opposition to the basic concept. President Biden already wants half of new vehicles to be emissions-free by 2030, and the EPA reversed Trump-era standards rollbacks in December. Meanwhile, California, Massachusetts and New York State expect to ban sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035 and frequently push for stricter standards than the federal government. The principles and resulting EPA standards would theoretically help politicians reach these targets sooner by encouraging manufacturers to electrify their fleets quickly.

Whether or not GM and the EDF get their way isn't clear. The EPA isn't guaranteed to take the principles to heart, and a change of presidents could lead to weaker rules. We'd add that GM has altered its stance on emissions reductions depending on who's in office. The firm backed the Trump administration's efforts to revoke waivers letting California set tougher requirements, only to change its tune after Biden won the 2020 election. Still, we wouldn't expect GM to back out any time soon. The company has staked its future on EVs, and it stands to profit if the market shifts to eco-friendly vehicles a little sooner.

USB has come a long way since the 12Mbps days of the ’90s. It has waved goodbye to USB-B and is inching away from USB-A in favor of the slim, reversible USB-C connector. Data transfer rates have increased so dramatically that we can run powerful setups with high-resolution monitors, speedy external storage, and numerous other devices from the USB Implementers Forum’s latest open standard, USB4.

USB4 unifies the USB and Intel Thunderbolt protocols for the first time, expanding USB’s capabilities while further dividing the technology into different performance classes. Adding features like dynamic bandwidth allocation ensures that USB4 is by far the most advanced USB generation. While there are PCs, docks, and cables supporting USB4, we’ve yet to see everything the protocol can do, like powering an eGPU without Intel branding.

With all that going on, we thought it would be a great time to put a spotlight on the latest and greatest generation of USB. We’ve whipped up a handy refresher for all things USB4, breaking down the various key aspects of the spec, from how it differs from other specs to protocol tunneling, Alt Mode, and power delivery.

The next USB standard will double existing speeds even with an older cable https://briefnews.eu/the-next-usb-standard-will-double-existing-speeds-even-with-an-older-cable/ https://briefnews.eu/the-next-usb-standard-will-double-existing-speeds-even-with-an-older-cable/#respond Thu, 01 Sep 2022 20:18:34 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-next-usb-standard-will-double-existing-speeds-even-with-an-older-cable/ There’s a new, super-fast, version of USB 4 on the horizon and you won’t even have to buy a brand new cable to take advantage of it. The USB Promoter Group announced that the next-gen USB Version 2.0 standard is “pending release” and will double the bandwidth of existing USB 4 connectors, from 40 Gbps to up to 80 Gbps.

Amazingly, the new standard is also backwards compatible with previous USB 4 cables. This means that existing USB-C cables capable of 40 Gbps will also get the faster speeds when the new standard becomes available. From the press release: “Key characteristics of the updated USB4 solution include: Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables.”

The USB promoter Group didn’t explain the details around how that’s possible, but a spokesperson for the organization told The Verge it was “a requirement when the new specification was developed and the specifics as to how 80Gbps signaling is accomplished will be disclosed once the final specification is released.”

It’s not yet clear when the new standard will actually reach consumers. In its press release, the USB Promoter Group said the “update is specifically targeted to developers at this time” so it could still be some time before the rest of us can get computers with the new super-fast connector.

Escape at Dannemora Review: A Superb Cast Elevates a Standard Prison Break https://briefnews.eu/escape-at-dannemora-review-a-superb-cast-elevates-a-standard-prison-break/ https://briefnews.eu/escape-at-dannemora-review-a-superb-cast-elevates-a-standard-prison-break/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 10:26:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/escape-at-dannemora-review-a-superb-cast-elevates-a-standard-prison-break/ We’ve seen plenty of prison breaks on TV and in movies over the years. (Heck, we even had a whole show called Prison Break… and it ran for five seasons!) So as yet another entry in a well-worn genre, Showtime’s true-crime limited series Escape at Dannemora — premiering this Sunday at 10/9c; I’ve seen six of the seven episodes — is brutally effective, but not especially groundbreaking. When it delves into the thickly tangled psyches of its characters, though, it rises to a higher level, thanks to excellent performances from its three lead actors — especially Patricia Arquette, who delivers fascinating, Emmy-caliber work here.

Escape at Dannemora Paul Dano Patricia ArquetteYou may recall the real-life story that Dannemora is based on: the 2015 manhunt that ensued when two convicted murderers made a daring escape from an upstate New York prison. It grabbed headlines with its sordid details — the inmates were having sex with a woman who worked at the prison, and she helped them escape! — and with comedy star Ben Stiller on board to direct, you might expect him to take this story in a jokey, Coen Brothers-esque direction. But Stiller doesn’t poke fun at his characters; instead, he plays it straight with a melancholy, generously humane portrait of blue-collar life… and the lengths some will go to bust out of that life.

Stiller filmed Dannemora in the real-life New York town where the prison break took place, and the cast and crew even spent about a year there before filming began. All that time spent pays off: Dannemora feels lived-in, with a bone-deep understanding of the struggles the people who live there go through. In a bitterly cold town that feels lost in time and is the farthest thing from glamorous, it’s understandable that people might want to escape: not only inmates Matt (Benicio Del Toro) and Sweat (Paul Dano), but also prickly prison employee Tilly (Arquette), who’s fooling around with both of them as an act of rebellion against her own drab, disappointing life.

Matt and Sweat’s escape plot dutifully hits all the usual B-movie beats: the plan, the near-discovery by the guards, the discouraging setback and then, finally, the escape. It’s lean and mean, and helped along by Stiller’s energetic directorial choices, like an exhilarating nine-minute tracking shot that reveals the dizzying full length of the escape route. But it can’t help but feel a bit stale. I’d rather have spent that time learning more about Tilly, or the prisoners. The character work is so strong, everything else about Dannemora pales by comparison.

Escape at Dannemora Patricia Arquette TillyBoth Del Toro and Dano do top-notch work here; Del Toro nimbly walks the line between charming and terrifying, and Dano plays against type with a tough-edged turn. But as good as they are, Arquette is the true standout here. She radically alters her appearance to play Tilly — no makeup, stringy blonde hair, her lips scrunched up in a permanent sneer — but it’s more than just a physical transformation. Tilly is pretty much a jerk, eternally irritated and constantly lying and whining, but Arquette also lets us see how she secretly just aches for a little attention and excitement. It’s a riveting performance, on par with anything I’ve seen on TV this year. (Tilly’s husband Lyle, though, is played a little too cartoonishly dopey, like he wandered over from Fargo.)

Like many limited series these days, Dannemora probably could stand to be shorter; it stalls out and loses momentum in the middle episodes before ramping back up for the final installments. But there’s a lot of rich psychological ground to cover here, and Stiller and his actors patiently sift through every bit of it. It’s interesting to compare this to another true-crime docudrama hitting TV screens soon: Bravo’s Dirty John, which has more than enough polish and glamour, but ends up being disappointingly hollow. Escape at Dannemora is more like a calloused pair of hands: maybe not the prettiest thing in the world to look at… but they get the job done.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Escape at Dannemora rises above the typical prison-break story with humane characterization and excellent acting, especially from Patricia Arquette.

Free speech for CNN, but not for Assange: The media’s double standard https://briefnews.eu/free-speech-for-cnn-but-not-for-assange-the-medias-double-standard/ https://briefnews.eu/free-speech-for-cnn-but-not-for-assange-the-medias-double-standard/#respond Fri, 16 Nov 2018 20:14:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/free-speech-for-cnn-but-not-for-assange-the-medias-double-standard/

Two journalists on the bad side of Donald Trump were vindicated this week. One had his White House credentials restored. Another got proof that Uncle Sam wants him behind bars. Guess which one had all the support from the MSM.

CNN’s Jim Acosta was kicked out of the White House because the US president didn’t like the way the journalist bombarded him with confrontational questions. Less than a week later, a Trump-appointed judge ordered his access restored, at least for the time being. A big win for the freedom of speech in America.

WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange is in a self-imposed confinement in Ecuador embassy in London because he believes that if he leaves the British will snatch him and ship to the land of the free to be prosecuted as a spy. His situation did not change much this week, except that his suspicions of a secret indictment were collaborated an Assistant US Attorney, in an apparent slip of the pen.

Somehow many of the people and media outlets, who stood by Acosta in defense of his right to pester the US president – sorry, hold the US president accountable – were nowhere to be seen when it came to defending Assange’s right to publish America’s dirty little secrets.

The irony of the situation however is cherished by some commenters on Twitter.

Although some seem to believe that the entire Acosta scandal was a ruse by Trump to save Assange’s neck.

US economy about to collapse, taking down dollar & American standard of living – Peter Schiff https://briefnews.eu/us-economy-about-to-collapse-taking-down-dollar-american-standard-of-living-peter-schiff/ https://briefnews.eu/us-economy-about-to-collapse-taking-down-dollar-american-standard-of-living-peter-schiff/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 11:07:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-economy-about-to-collapse-taking-down-dollar-american-standard-of-living-peter-schiff/ Tuesday’s US stock plunge following a massive selloff on global markets is seen by some analysts as a sign of more bad things to come. RT talked to veteran stock broker Peter Schiff to explore the issue in depth.

After the dramatic early drop, US stocks recovered but finished lower after a wild day on Wall Street. By the closing bell, the Dow was down 126 points, or 0.5 percent, recovering most of its early losses. The Nasdaq closed down 0.4 percent, while the S&P 500 shed 15 points, finishing 0.6 percent lower.

According to Schiff, who currently serves as the CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, the stock market is definitely looking like it’s heading for another bear market.

“All the signs are already there. Look at what’s happening out there. The stock market is falling, 40 percent of the S&P is already in a bear market. Look at homebuilders, the housing stocks, the financials, the retailers – all these are the same things that were happening in 2007 leading to that crisis,” the strategist told RT America.

The economist urged people be prepared for not only an economic crisis, but a political crisis as well with the current administration likely to take the blame. According to Schiff, the US national currency is set to meet with the worst losses.

“So, what you’ve got to do is get out of US dollar assets. The dollar is going to be the biggest casualty along with the American standard of living,” he said, adding that foreign stock markets, especially emerging markets, currently depressed by the strong dollar would see a strong rise.

“They are going to see a boom, when the dollar weakens,” Schiff said.

“Look at the price of gold up another eight bucks, but it’s still about $ 1,230, gold’s going to new highs, it was at $ 1,900 in 2011, it’s going to go much higher this time,” the analyst added.

According to the economist, the US household debt that is about $ 15 trillion represents a crucial issue for the standard of living in the country.

“Everybody is loaded up with debt, and it’s not like we began this monetary experiment without much debt. We had a lot of debt in 2008. In fact, the financial crisis was about debt, it was about our inability to pay the debt that we had,” Schiff said.

“But instead of addressing the problem and allowing the debt to be paid down, the Federal Reserve led us down the primrose path into much deeper debt by keeping interest rates at zero and holding them for so long. The Federal Reserve actually encouraged an overly indebted nation to borrow even more money.”

The expert stressed that interest rate hikes would only worsen the current situation, as all the facets of American society that are leveraged to the hilt, including individuals, corporations, the federal government, state and local governments.

“So, everybody is loaded up with debt. And guess what? Interest rates are now finally rising, and that means the cost of servicing that debt is going up, and this is going [to] be a problem just like adjustable rate mortgage was a big problem in 2008, when these things were resetting,” he said. “People couldn’t afford to pay. Well, the same thing is going to happen on a national scale. Rates are growing up, and we too broke to pay.”

According to Schiff, there’s no way to avoid the chaos and normalize things. “It’s impossible, because in fact we kept it going so long that collapse is going to be that much bigger, and sooner we face that reality the better. But no politician wants to face that reality, they want to pretend everything is great.”

The tax cut pushed by the US President Donald Trump is also set to worsen the current concerns about stocks, the economy and the living standard, according to Schiff.

“If the government is collecting less revenue, then the deficits are getting bigger and so the government has to borrow even more money, and that becomes an even bigger problem,” he said. “What we need is smaller government, but nobody wants to shrink government, including Donald Trump, who is now the defender of Social Security and Medicare.

“He wants to launch another nuclear arms race and start the space race, so it’s all about spending more money, so Trump wants to spend more money and cut taxes at the same time. That’s completely reckless.”

It’s a common adage in the tech world: “privacy is hard.”

On the one hand, a city like Oakland wants to have enough surveillance that it can mitigate crimes like the recent tragic killings at local public transit stations. On the other hand, Oaklanders—as they have for decades—are concerned about the real possibility of the government overreaching.
