More details are expected to drop during the Ubisoft Forward event September 10th, but for now we can gleam some tidbits from the announcement image. It shows Basim Ibn Ishaq, a character from the recent Assassin's Creed Valhalla, leaping with his hidden blade in front of the Palace of the Golden Gate in Baghdad (via Polygon).

That lines up with previous leaks around the game's setting, which also indicated that Mirage would be a return to stealth gameplay for the series. The new title was originally intended to be DLC for Valhalla, but Bloomberg reports that it was later transformed into a standalone experience to fill out Ubisoft's release schedule. No matter its conception, it's nice to see the series return to its Middle Eastern roots. Being a super-powered killing machine in Origins and Valhalla is fun and all, but it's far from the methodical and less action-heavy gameplay of the earlier AC games (especially the under-rated Origins).

In an in-app notification (as shared by social media consultant Matt Navarra and other publications), the company has announced that both iOS and Android versions of the application will stop working on October 28th. Meta is also giving users the chance to download their search data and reminding them that Facebook Gaming isn't going away entirely. Users will merely have to go to the Gaming tab in the main Facebook app to watch their favorite creators' livestreams.

The company released the dedicated Gaming app in 2020 to better compete with Twitch and YouTube. Meta (still known as Facebook back then) designed the app to highlight content from streamers and to provide users with a group chat and other community features. It didn't say why it decided to shut down the standalone app, but it could be part of its cost-cutting efforts meant to help it weather what Mark Zuckerberg calls "one of the worst downturns [the company has seen] in recent history."

Over the past year, streaming tool providers such as StreamElements reported that Facebook Gaming comes only second to Twitch when it comes to hours watched on a game streaming platform. However, we examined data from CrowdTangle, Meta's analytics service, and found that the platform is flooded with spam and pirated content masquerading as gaming livestreams. Back then, a spokesperson told Engadget that Meta was "working to improve [its] tools to identify violating content" so that users can have "the best experience."

While Facebook’s Oculus Quest won’t arrive until the spring of 2019, its seemingly beefier inside-out tracking plus 6DoF controllers may already pose a threat to HTC’s Vive Focus, as well as to other Vive Wave-based standalone VR headsets — including Pico’s Neo (whose ultrasound-based 6DoF controllers are still missing) and the more recent G2.

As such, HTC’s first order of business is to release a developer kit for adding not one, but two 6DoF controllers to substitute the Vive Focus’ single 3DoF controller — one that relies on software to simulate a 6DoF feel, but also often requires re-centering.

At the World Conference on VR Industry in Nanchang, China today, HTC announced this new “Vive 6DoF Developer Kit” which includes a pair of 6DoF controllers, plus a tracking attachment that goes on top of the Vive Focus. Much like how developers can port their two-handed VR experiences to single-controller VR headsets via Vive Wave, this time they can even preserve two-handed controls thanks to this dev kit.

For some reason, HTC is staying mum on how the 6DoF controller tracking works here; all we can see is the circular object on top of each controller, and the attachment gently bulges around a good part of the headset’s main body — likely for ensuring maximum coverage for tracking both controllers.

In a video clip provided by HTC’s China President, Alvin Wang Graylin, the 6DoF controllers appear to respond well even with his wide range of movements — he has incredibly long limbs — in Beat Saber, though I would have liked to see him try a faster song just to push the hardware a little further.

Until now, the Vive Focus has only been made available in China, and HTC’s also opened a flagship store in Shenzhen to help push its VR products. Meanwhile, the company is about to offer its Vive Focus to business customers in Japan starting from October 30th. But if all goes well, the company should still be pushing for an international rollout some time this year, especially with all the handy updates plus upcoming accessories made just for this headset.

Wear OS gains a popular new app today that many have been waiting for, as Spotify announced that it’s bringing a stand-alone wearable app to Google’s smartwatch platform.

Spotify’s stand-alone app lets you browse and control music from your wrist. It seems to be a lighter version of Spotify’s mobile app, allowing you to browse your tracks and playlists and quickly save songs to your library. You can also control playback from your wrist—it appears similar to Wear OS’ native music controls, just built into a dedicated Spotify app.

The Wear OS app also integrates with Spotify Connect, the company’s method of connecting and controlling playback on Bluetooth devices. Now from your wrist, you can manage connections between Bluetooth speakers, laptops, and other devices and quickly change the playback source.

Musical.ly may be blowing up as a social video service, but it’s scaling back the amount of apps it offers. The company has informed TechCrunch that it’s dropping its stand-alone livestreaming client, Live.ly, and rolling its features into its main lip-syncing app. Fire up Live.ly now and you’ll only be steered toward a download for Musical.ly. Eventually, Live.ly will disappear from mobile app stores altogether.

The transition has been somewhat abrupt — users didn’t get much of a heads-up before Musical.ly disabled its stand-alone live client, and the core app’s feature is only being rolled out in stages.

Despite the hiccups, Musical.ly is adamant that it’s devoted to livestreaming. It noted that most live viewers were already watching in the Musical.ly app — this is just consolidating effort, it argued. Of course, this is also coming mere days after Facebook introduced its own lip sync app, threatening Musical.ly’s business. If it didn’t focus all of its energy into its main app, it risked being overshadowed and facing a fate similar to Snapchat’s.

Daydream, Google’s foray into the crowded virtual reality space, has hitherto used headsets that are simply holsters, a way of holding an Android smartphone right in front of your face so that it works as a pair of VR goggles. This makes Daydream’s cost of entry cheap—the headset can be a completely passive device with no electronics of its own—which is important for making VR accessible.

Lenovo’s $ 400 Mirage Solo, out today, is the first standalone Daydream headset. You don’t slot a phone into this one—the device has all the hardware it needs to provide a standalone VR experience. The hardware inside the headset is certainly phone-like; it has a Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. It also contains phone-like sensors, with a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer. But because it’s built for VR, it has a couple of extra sensors: a pair of world-facing cameras that Google calls “WorldSense.”

WorldSense is Google’s inside-out, six-degree-of-freedom motion-tracking solution. As with similar systems in Microsoft’s HoloLens and the various Windows Mixed Reality headsets, the system combines data from the device’s internal sensors with data from the cameras to track the headset’s position and orientation in space, without requiring the fixed-base stations that are used on the first-generation HTC Vive and Oculus Rift devices.

We first got word last month, and how we have the official announcement: Indian automaker Mahindra has launched Automobili Pininfarina as a new standalone sustainable luxury vehicle brand, with plans for a new electric hypercar in 2020.

The company will be a client of Italian design house Pininfarina SpA, known for its work with Ferrari and more recently for designing battery-electric concept vehicles for Hong Kong-based Hybrid Kinetic Group. Mahindra acquired a controlling stake in Pininfarina in 2015. It will be led by Michael Perschke, a 25-year auto industry veteran who was formerly managing director of Audi in India and a member of the management board of Volkswagen Group Sales India. Automobili Pininfarina will be based in Rome.

First up will be an electric car flagship that will go from 0-62 mph in less than 2 seconds and have a range of more than 300 miles, according to Automotive News Europe. Codenamed PF-Zero, its price will approach €2 million (U.S. $ 2.5 million). Mahindra says the new brand will borrow from its experience in the Formula E electric-car racing circuit.

Motor Authority reports the hypercar will also use technology developed by Rimac and that it will boast output of 1,500 horsepower, rivaling the Bugatti Chiron. It’ll be built in limited numbers, though future models, including SUVs and sedans, will be built in higher volumes.

Pininfarina most recently has been seen designing concept vehicles under the Hybrid Kinetic brand, most recently teasing the H500 sedan and K350 crossover ahead of their debuts in Beijing.

Separately, Pininfarina plans limited production of 12 units of its H2 Speed, its 653-horsepower hydrogen fuel cell track car that goes from 0-62 in 3.4 seconds, reportedly this year.

Last year Oculus teased its standalone “Go” VR headset saying it would go on sale for $ 199 early in 2018. Now Variety cites unnamed sources claiming that it will debut at Facebook’s F8 conference May 1st. That should provide the kind of stage Zuckerberg, Barra & Co. would like for their first mass-market virtual reality product, although it does mean we have a few more weeks to wait before it arrives.

As Hugo Barra explained in January, standalone headsets are necessary to push the company’s vision of social VR. He said “It’s the idea of having a completely self-contained product that you can just put on and start using it. You can do everything in one step.” While other VR headsets are more powerful and include things like positional tracking that the Go won’t have, bypassing the need to plug in a powerful computer or game console should open it up to more people.

During CES the company revealed Xiaomi is building the hardware based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset, and an FCC filing previously leaked out. With its name, price and most of the technical details already available, the big question is how this will be supported by Facebook’s software and ecosystem — which will likely be answered soon in San Jose.
