Also in the interview, Brian addressed “why we exist,” which caused even more confusion with the hosts.

He explained: “I want to ask questions. As you said, these are the biggest questions we can ask.

“How did the universe begin? Why is there anything at all? Why do we exist? How do we exist?

“Also, what the fundamental nature of reality is. I think we’ve all asked these questions at some level and using some language.

Antiques Roadshow expert unveils staggering value of ‘incredibly rare’ 18th century dress https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-unveils-staggering-value-of-incredibly-rare-18th-century-dress/ https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-unveils-staggering-value-of-incredibly-rare-18th-century-dress/#respond Tue, 29 Dec 2020 16:57:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-expert-unveils-staggering-value-of-incredibly-rare-18th-century-dress/

Over the years, several rare items have been brought along to the Roadshow, some have been given incredible valuations while others have fallen short if they have been restored. During series 39 of Antiques Roadshow which visited Tewkesbury Abbey, expert Hilary Kay took a closer look at an incredibly rare 18th-century dress. But how much was it worth?

“Looking at this dress, I can picture the scene; one misty morning, a woman walking through the Abbey meadows. It’s wonderful. Is it a family heirloom?” Hilary asked and the guest replied: “No, no.”

“So what is it?” The expert probed.

“It was given to me by a friend in the 1960s and she just gave it to me, I just had a daughter and I think she might be interested later on to dress up in it,” the owner explained.

“And did your dress up in it?” Hilary remarked.

“No, it’s never been touched. I’ve never seen it out,” the guest confessed to Hilary.

Shocked by her admission, Hilary replied: “You’ve never seen it out? This is the first time you’ve actually seen it? How do you think it looks?”

“Very nice. It’s beautiful,” the lady said and then revealed she kept it “in a box or in a drawer”.

Hilary then took a closer look at the dress and explained: “Well, lets talk about what it is.

“It’s what known as a sack back robe, people might say it’s in complete, it’s got an open front. Well it was an open robe and you would wear a very beautiful – you call them petticoats but it was an underskirt really.

“The decorations on it are also rather wonderful. You’ve got at the front here these little dangling hassles and then down each side you’ve got raised pockets almost, which have got a little piece of wool inside, a bit like a piece of cotton wool, but it’s real wool inside this panel here to give it a 3D view,” she told the lady.

“What I’d like to do, if the breeze will allow us, I would just like to turn it around, gently and we can see the back here which gives it it’s other name – the sack back robe.”

BBC One viewer saw Hilary turn the dress around so she could examine the details the back of the gown had to offer.

Hilary said: “You’ve got pleats running from the shoulder blades, box pleats, running all the way down to the bottom which gives it a sort of train effect.

“So, when you wore this, you were making really quite a statement.

“What I also like very much is these scalloped edges, particularly on the sleeves here.

“When one looks at a dress like this, one has to appreciate this is an extraordinary survivor. Painted fabrics are notoriously difficult to keep and the fact that it’s been kept in a box for so long, would perhaps explain why it hasn’t just fallen to pieces which is so often the fate.

“It is incredibly rare survivor,” Hilary remarked.

“It’s beautiful, it’s a lovely design and perhaps more importantly, a dress like this is of huge demand internationally by collectors and museums.

Sir Cliff appeared on Life Stories where he was interviewed by the show’s host Piers Morgan, 55, last month.

In the candid chat about his life, the musician opened up about the death of his father, who passed away at the age of 56.

20-years-old at the time, the singer explained: “It wasn’t easy for any of us really, but he was a naughty person really, he did smoke a lot.

“That’s why I feel some times that my anger if I’ve got any, comes out when I think he missed the best things in my life.”

Antiques Roadshow uncovers staggering value of ‘worthless’ diamond brooch and earrings https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-uncovers-staggering-value-of-worthless-diamond-brooch-and-earrings/ https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-uncovers-staggering-value-of-worthless-diamond-brooch-and-earrings/#respond Thu, 03 Sep 2020 16:47:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-uncovers-staggering-value-of-worthless-diamond-brooch-and-earrings/

Antiques Roadshow has been to some of the best locations around the UK, during the show’s time in Bristol when they visited the Aerospace museum, expert Susan Rumfitt took a closer look at a pair of earrings and a matching brooch. The owner was under the impression to items were costume jewellery, and he was pleasantly surprised when Susan revealed their true value.

“These are utterly spectacular, the movement, the flow – doesn’t matter what they’re made of, I just love them,” Susan began.

“How do you feel about them?”

“I felt fairly indifferent until earlier and I just thought they were costume jewellery that my wife gave me to bring along,” the guest replied.

“Who did they belong to before your wife?” Susan asked.

“They belonged to my wife’s step-mother and she fled from Nazi Germany with her parents in the 1930s,” the man explained.

“And grew up there and then she had a very interesting life travelling the world. With things like that, they could’ve come from absolutely anywhere!”

“Well the jewels themselves are dating from the mid-50s,” Susan said.

“They have what is often referred to as this “new look” which referred to the clothes that Christian Dior had brought in in the late 40s.

“It was a freedom of expression after the Second World War, we went back to this idea of bringing out the beauty in clothes, the beauty in women.

“Now, not to shatter the dreams, but you thought they were costume jewellery – they’re not.”

Susan went onto reveal: “We have got them, full of beautiful diamonds – absolutely stunning.

“Set in white gold, but the reason why they might have been redesigned from other jewellery, is because they are different cuts of stones going on.

“Modern, brilliant-cut diamonds, which are very round, set with older, Victorian-cut diamonds, so those are the ones that probably would’ve been extracted from an older piece of jewellery.

“And then on the side, we’ve got some really lovely step-cut diamonds here,” she explained as the camera zoomed in.

“Now the older, brilliant-cut diamonds with the modern, brilliant-cut diamonds and these step-cut diamonds contracting the Victorian look that we’ve seen developing in the 1920s and 1930s.

“That’s what this brooch is about, bringing these older stones into a very contemporary piece of jewellery, together with the earrings as well,” Susan concluded.

“Obviously, it’s the Roadshow, we’re going to put some value on the items,” she said.

David Walliams has donated a huge £10k to his Britain’s Got Talent golden buzzer contestant Christian Kildruff, the five-year-old who has embarked on his own charity initiative to help the NHS. As our health service is pushed to the limits, people everywhere have been raising money to help our brave hero’s out and Christian is one of them.

The youngster, who suffers from cerebral palsy, aims to walk three-miles on his frame to raise money and David couldn’t resist helping him out.

They have raised more than £25,000 so far for the frontline workers so far, and Christian has almost reached his three-mile target.

He is part of choir Sign With Us alongside his older sister Jade, and the group stunned the BGT judges with their performance.

Leaving Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon in tears, the group sang and signed a beautiful rendition of This Is Me from the musical The Greatest Showman.

Jade set up the sign language choir in order to help her communicate with her brother, and it’s safe to say they won over the nation’s hearts.

Taking to Twitter, the proud sister shared the news with her followers.

She wrote: “OMG can’t stop crying, massive thank you @davidwalliams first you made our group’s dreams come true on @BGT with the #goldenbuzzer and now you’ve donated a whopping £10,000 to Christians 3-mile challenge fundraiser for the @NHSuk couldn’t thank you enough.”

X Factor star Olly Murs, was also among those who made a generous donation to Christian’s cause.

Jade has been documenting Christian’s journey and people have come out in full force to support the youngster’s mission.

Days after their hugely successful audition was aired on TV, Jade opened up to the publication about how important the choir is to her.

“When Christian was born, he was stillborn and he couldn’t breathe for 24 minutes and because his brain was starved of oxygen that led to his disabilities,” she revealed.

“At five weeks old we decided to foster Christian and he was put up for adoption but because of how he was no one wanted to adopt him.”

Emily recently replaced 2016 winner Scarlett Moffatt on I’m A Celebrity: Extra Camp, which was surrounded by rumours as to why the decision had been made.

The I’m A Celeb runner-up joins Adam Thomas and Joel Dommett on the late night show to interview guests and get the gossip from Ant and Dec.

However, Scarlett said there wasn’t any reason for the decision other than the fact she hasn’t spent a proper Christmas with her family in three years.

The former Gogglebox star told Express.co.uk in a previous interview: “I was messaging them all just before the show because we still have a group Whatsapp chat from 2016 which Adam and Joel are in and I was messaging Emily saying, ‘You will do amazing, you will smash it.’”

Catherine the Great location: Where is series filmed? Staggering Russia locations revealed https://briefnews.eu/catherine-the-great-location-where-is-series-filmed-staggering-russia-locations-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/catherine-the-great-location-where-is-series-filmed-staggering-russia-locations-revealed/#respond Fri, 04 Oct 2019 14:03:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/catherine-the-great-location-where-is-series-filmed-staggering-russia-locations-revealed/

Catherine the Great is Helen Mirren’s new period drama, chronicling the life of Russia’s longest-running female ruler. She plays the Empress of Russia in the new four-part drama following the latter part of her rule as well as her passionate love affair with Grigory Potemkin (played by Jason Clarke). Here’s everything fans need to know about where the series was filmed and set.

Where was Catherine the Great filmed?

Catherine the Great is a new HBO and Sky Atlantic mini-series set in 18th century Russia.

Focusing on the latter part of the Russian ruler’s reign, the show picks up in the 1700s after Catherine (Helen Mirren) ousted her husband, Peter III.

The series is set in the opulent palaces of Russia where Catherine spent her time with her court, advisors and her long-time lover Grigory Potemkin.

Since it was released, the series has been praised for its epic sequences spanning contemporary Russia as well as its breathtaking shots.

These scenes were mostly filmed in Lithuania as well as some of the actual palaces across Russia.

One of the real locations was the Peterhof Palace in Saint Petersburg, which was used in the first episode when Catherine and Lady Bruce (Gina McKee) first meet Potemkin.

Episode two also used a location in Saint Petersburg called the Yusupov Palace Palace, which was the setting for the scenes at the theatre.

One of the most iconic settings used was Catherine Palace in Pushkin, which is located around 30 kilometres from Saint Petersburg.

This was reportedly the setting for the gold corridor that Catherine is seen walking through in a number of shots of the series.

In an interview with Express.co.uk and other media, Potemkin actor Clarke revealed that one of his favourite shots was in the location of the gold palace ballroom in Catherine Palace.

He said: “And the Russians, they were fantastic tours. There were a lot of ‘niets’ to begin with but they opened it up for us.”

However, not all of the show was filmed in Russia, with a number of locations in Lithuania also doubling up for the real thing.

These included the Pazaislis Monastery in Kaunas, which was used as the soldiers’ barracks as well as a number of shots filmed around Vilnius.

Finally, the Baroque Rundale Palace in Latvia was also used for the cross-dressing ball at the end of episode one.

The palace, which the real Catherine gave as a gift to Count Valerian Zubov was also the location for Countess Bruce’s quarters and a number of shots inside of the palaces.

Gina McKee, who played Countess Bruce in the mini-series, also spoke about the experience of filming in these real locations.

READ MORE: Catherine the Great: Is it based on a true story?

She said: “They did allow us access to some of the palaces in Saint Petersburg and just outside of Saint Petersburg.”

One of the most wonderful parts of filming for her was the moment in the first episode when the plates appear from underneath the table as that really part of the location they shot in.

She added: “That is the genuine thing, it’s phenomenal the mechanics of that is is really worth the trip to see it’s staggering.

“And she had that built as an intimate place to dine.”

Catherine the Great airs on Thursdays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic and is available to stream in full on NOW TV.

John Humphrys shocks Piers Morgan with staggering BBC revelation after they BANNED him https://briefnews.eu/john-humphrys-shocks-piers-morgan-with-staggering-bbc-revelation-after-they-banned-him/ https://briefnews.eu/john-humphrys-shocks-piers-morgan-with-staggering-bbc-revelation-after-they-banned-him/#respond Wed, 02 Oct 2019 19:38:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-humphrys-shocks-piers-morgan-with-staggering-bbc-revelation-after-they-banned-him/

Piers Morgan, 54, and his co-host Susanna Reid, 48, welcomed John Humphrys, 76, onto Good Morning Britain to speak about his career as a broadcaster. Having stood down from the role of host of the Today Programme last week, the veteran presenter was quizzed about his real thoughts about the BBC Radio 4 breakfast show.

Having presented the Today Programme for over three decades, Mr Humphrys presented his last show on the BBC radio station a couple of weeks ago.

As he now has spare time to fill in the morning, Piers made a quip this was the reason why the veteran broadcaster was able to speak with him and Susanna today.

Mr Humphrys isn’t the only iconic staple of the show however, as the programme also offers a Thought for the Day segment.

The premises of the segment sees guests discuss topical issues and figures making the headlines from a faith perspective.

Airing his views on such a pinnacle for BBC Radio 4’s flagship programme, Mr Humphrys began: “At 7.30, they will do the hard interview, usually, and then you’ll have a softer take on that hard interview and then another hard interview in-between that comes that rather pointless Thought of the Day.”

After the former host admitted he thought the segment was “pointless”, Piers laughed nervously as Susanna wanted greater explanation on the comment.

“You don’t think Thought for the Day should be on the Today Programme anymore?” Susanna enquired, to which the veteran broadcaster admitted it isn’t sold as a religious segment, before going on to offer his thoughts on what Piers would be like if he presented it.

After the Good Morning Britain star admitted he was a Catholic, the guest replied: “Here we have a situation where Piers would be allowed to do Thought for the Day because he can approach it from a christian perspective.”

“I could not do it. I do not believe in any…” Mr Humphrys continued, before Piers said: “How interesting.”

Concluding the talk on the subject, the broadcaster added: “I would say it’s discriminatory,” after admitting he thought the segment should be scrapped.

“Why shouldn’t I as somebody who – I regard myself as being a fair middle of the road kind of bloke but I feel quite strongly about certain things and I would love to express my opinion about certain things – not allowed to because I cannot approach it from a religious perspective.”

A BBC spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Thought for the Day is a long-standing part of the Today schedule and an important part of Radio 4’s religious content. It features speakers from the world’s major faith traditions reflecting on topical events and issues, and serves a distinct purpose as part of the BBC’s overall output which of course includes many non-religious programmes.

“It provokes a range of different views including John’s, and this isn’t the first time he’s made these known publicly.”

During his 32 year career as host of the Today Programme, Mr Humphrys has interviewed a plethora of guests, including senior members of Parliament.

His final interviews on the show included speaking with former Prime Minister’s, David Cameron, 52, and Tony Blair, 66.

One of his most infamous interviews with the leader of the country was with the late Margaret Thatcher, who he spoke to on the phone from 10 Downing Street.

Mr Humphrys announced his departure from the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4’s The World at One earlier this year.

“I love doing the programme, I have always enjoyed it, always loved it.

“And I still (do), that’s the problem; I should have gone years ago, obviously I should have gone years ago, but I love doing the programme,” the veteran broadcaster said.

“When you do this programme it dominates your life, not just because you have to get up in the morning so many days a week, but all the time, you have to be obsessed – I think that is the right word – with what’s going on out there.

“You have to read everything and listen to everything and all the rest of it. There are so many things you think ‘Oh I could have done this, I could have done that’ and I’m never going to do them if I stay on this programme.”

Following Mr Humphrys’ departure from his role, not one, but four presenters will be taking over from the veteran broadcaster.

Justin Webb, 58, Mishal Husain, 46, Martha Kearney, 61, and Nick Robinson, 55, will be hosting the Today Programme for the foreseeable future.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Antiques Roadshow: ‘Goodness!’ Guest speechless over staggering betel lime box valuation https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-guest-speechless-over-staggering-betel-lime-box-valuation/ https://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-guest-speechless-over-staggering-betel-lime-box-valuation/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2019 14:55:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/antiques-roadshow-goodness-guest-speechless-over-staggering-betel-lime-box-valuation/

Antiques Roadshow continued on Sunday, with guests brining along their relics to the Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester.

As is routine with the BBC show, experts are on hand to offer this advice to guests after learning a little bit about the antiques brought along.

Amin Jaffer, whose expertise lies with antiques originating from Asia, was joined by one guest who had developed a collection of betel lime boxes.

The collector explained he had stumbled across his first betel box whilst clearing through some of his late grandfather’s belongings, building up a collection since then.

Amin explained the betel bees, which look like saucers, were used to slice up South Asian delicacy areca nut, which would then be fermented and stirred up with other spices in the small compound.

The mixture would then be mixed with lime paste, in relation to the boxes namesake.

“[They’re] not known about in the West. It’s something people have no idea about,” the guest told Amin.

“So, I started doing my research and collecting; found them in the oddest places.

“It’s just gradually over the years built into what surprised me as a large collection,” he continued.

Stepping in, the expert remarked: “The fact people don’t recognise them means you can swoop in and pick them up for nothing.”

Although the guest had brought along a vast amount of the collection, he still had some at home which Amin took into account when giving his valuation.

“But I would’ve thought in the area, for the whole group, for the right buyer something of like £15-20,000,” Amin told the guest.

The betel box collector was astonished by the staggering valuation and after some moments of silence, the guest simply commented: “Goodness.”

Earlier on in the programme, expert Eric Knowles gave a valuation for a lustreware ceramic antique.

Explaining the history behind the piece, Eric said: “The designer was Walter Crane. I believe it was painted between 1906 and 1938 when the factory shut down. I don’t know the age of it.”

Eric stepped in to add: “I’ve had a look at the mark on the back and there’s a year symbol I know this was actually made in 1933.

“You didn’t know that, did you? Thank goodness for that because you knew everything else.”

“Now to fill in the missing gap when it comes to valuation, I’d like to say that it’d be worth at least £5,000…” Eric commented.

“But it isn’t, it’s actually worth £12,000,” the expert concluded.

“£12,000 wow my wife will be very pleased,” the guest exclaimed.

Antiques Roadshow continues Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.

BBC Radio 4 Today: STAGGERING salaries of John Humphrys and Nick Robinson revealed https://briefnews.eu/bbc-radio-4-today-staggering-salaries-of-john-humphrys-and-nick-robinson-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-radio-4-today-staggering-salaries-of-john-humphrys-and-nick-robinson-revealed/#respond Wed, 03 Jul 2019 02:04:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-radio-4-today-staggering-salaries-of-john-humphrys-and-nick-robinson-revealed/

The BBC has been slammed today after the organisation released a list revealing its highest-paid presenters. While Gary Lineker remains the top earner on an eye-watering £1.75million a year, there was an increase in the number of BBC stars on £150,000 or more. Radio 4  Today Programme hosts John Humphrys and Nick Robinson are among the corporation’s biggest earners.

The BBC salaries bill wet up from £19.77million to £21.77million in the last financial year.

This increase was criticised by some, as it comes just weeks after the move to stop free TV licences for over 75s was announced.

BBC director general Tony Hall confirmed the total talent bill had risen by £10million but argued it was a smaller proportion of total programming costs.

READ MORE: BBC Breakfast: The HUGE salaries of Naga Munchetty, Dan Walker and Charlie Stayt revealed

He wrote in a blog: “They would earn significantly more elsewhere – and recent departures to commercial rivals show this argument isn’t hollow.

“The simple truth is we have spent more than ever on content, but the amount we have spent proportionally on talent has come down.

“But more importantly, whenever we ask the public whether they want big stars on the BBC they say yes.

“They say yes because they are talented and entertaining.

“They also say yes as it means they are getting big value from the BBC.”

These are the top 10 highest BBC earners of 2019:

1. Gary Lineker – £1,750,000-£1,759,999

2. Chris Evans – £1,660,000-£1,669,999

BBC Radio 4 Today Programme presenters

Outrage over the BBC gender pay gap after the salary list was announced last year prompted John Humphrys to take a pay cut.

The Today Programme presenter now earns around the £400,000-£409,999 mark.

Mr Humphrys is the second highest earning BBC current affairs present after Huw Edwards who earns £520,000 – £529,999.

Mr Humphrys’s Today Programme colleague Nick Robinson earns £250,000 – £259,999.

Mr Robinson earns the same as Evan Davis and both are among the highest-paid current affairs presenters at the BBC.
