Steadicam is the company behind iconic tracking shots in films like Rocky and Return of the Jedi, so when parent Tiffen launched a smartphone stabilizer bearing its name at CES 2017, there was a ton of interest. The $ 195 Steadicam Volt nabbed more than $ 1 million on Kickstarter and is now on sale at stores. It works very well and can produce natural-looking, cinematic shots, but don’t expect it to do that out of the box. It takes a fair amount of time to set it up, and even longer to master.
The Volt is a rather unusual type of stabilizer. Like Steadicam’s classic products, it relies on balance and inertia, but it also has a motorized gyro like the DJI Osmo and other electronic gimbals.
The gyro and electronics are tucked into the body. There’s a platform on top for the phone, and a handle and weighted frame below. Most of the parts are built from plastic, which doesn’t impart the most solid feel but makes the Volt very light — around a pound. It measures a bit more than a foot tall by about 9 inches deep, but it’s compact enough to squeeze into a jacket pocket when folded.
Tiffen says the reason for the hybrid gimbal/gyro approach is to give users maximum control. By applying pressure to the control surface just above the grip, you can quickly flip it around or change focus to a different subject. The Osmo and other products, on the other hand, can pan only as fast as the motor can turn.
The balance aspect means you can’t just take it out of the box and start shooting, though. First you have to set it up to your specific smartphone so that it’s perfectly — and I mean perfectly — adjusted. Once that’s done, you must learn how to use the thing so that you can shoot exactly the way you want.
I tried out the Steadicam Volt with a Samsung Galaxy S8, which already has a pretty darn good camera that shoots at 1080p or 4K (Ultra HD) resolution. As with any smartphone, handheld tracking shots can look very jerky, even if you operate it as smoothly as possible and turn on the built-in stabilization. For live streaming, even minor hand shaking can be noticeable too. That’s where the Volt can help.
To balance the Volt, you mount your phone and hold it horizontally. If the back tips up, you need to add weights until it tilts down, then adjust a slider for fine-tuned control. I needed just two weights for my Galaxy S8, but if you have a larger device, you’ll likely need more.
For side-to-side balance, you just push the phone to the right or the left in the cradle. Finally, there’s a screw adjustment that moves the phone back and forth so that it’s balanced perfectly and pointing ahead, not to the sky or the ground. Users have reported that some Volts don’t sit perfectly level, but there’s a firmware update to fix that issue.
With everything set up, I took the Volt to the street. You can’t just point it at your subject and capture glorious tracking shots — you have to get the hang of using it and develop a light touch on the controls for pans or tilts. Also, like most handheld stabilizers, the Volt doesn’t fix up or down movements, so you have to learn a sort of stealthy, smooth walk.
The Volt has two modes: sport and cinema. The former is on by default and offers a more rigid, easy-to-control operation. Cinema mode, activated by pushing the front button twice, provides less resistance, making for a smoother but touchier gimbal. You can use your built-in camera or any other app, including Tiffen’s own Image Maker. I didn’t have much luck with that app myself, as it crashed to a black screen when I tried using it.
It weighs less than a pound, so, with a light smartphone like the Galaxy S8, the Volt is easy to use all day. However, the 8-hour battery life is less than you get with other stabilizers, so if you do a marathon session, you’ll need to carry spare cells. Unlike with other products, though, it’s easy to swap them. That said, it will still function as a (much cruder) stabilizer even without power, so you won’t be totally stuck with no power.

The Volt always stays where you point it, whether up, down, left or right. If you want to change the angle, you merely apply pressure to the control stalk. Tiffin recommends using both hands, one to hold the gimbal handle and the other to control camera movement. I found that worked fine for me, but, with a bit more practice, I could hopefully do it one-handed, like Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown.
The Volt seems like an ideal stabilizer for vlogging or recording Facebook Live videos, since it’s fairly easy to control and tracks subjects faithfully. Flipping to the front camera and back requires a bit of care, however, in order not to jolt your phone or flip it around.
That brings up what is perhaps the Volt’s biggest flaw. If you happen to be out on a windy day, your phone could catch a gust and go out of control. Electronic stabilizers like the Osmo don’t have that problem to the same degree, as they’re more rigidly fixed. The solution is to brace the Volt harder with your hand, but that removes some of the smoothing benefits.
All told, I liked the Steadicam Volt, but it’s not for everyone. Users who want handheld, stabilized video with little setup and learning would probably be better off with the DJI Osmo, which also costs $ 195. There are also numerous knockoff electronic smartphone stabilizers on the market for around $ 100, if you want to take that risk.
If you’re willing to put up with the time needed to set up and learn it, however, the Volt is worth your attention. Once you become proficient (practice is the only way), there are more types of moves that you can do than with an electronic gimbal, and it gives you more direct control and feel too. The resulting tracking shots, I believe, are less mechanical and more organic-looking than you get with purely mechanical stabilizers. Just watch out for those gusts.

If you’ve ever shot video handheld with a mirrorless or DSLR, camera shake may have ruined your day. To deal with it, you need a heavy-duty gimbal, but that can cost more than the camera. Another way is to fix it in post-production, but the results can be less than optimal. That’s where the $ 250 SteadXP stabilizer comes in. It mounts on your hot shoe and measures all the motion with an accelerometer, then uses an included app to cancel it out. The results, I found, are quite good — provided you keep its limitations in mind and have the time and patience for the process.
Stabilizing rigs like DJI’s Ronin can cost thousands of dollars and be complex and cumbersome. Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Final Cut Pro X can do the job, but the software might guess camera movement wrong, making stabilization distorted or just bad.
The big selling points of the SteadXP, then, are that it’s relatively inexpensive at $ 250 ($ 190 for the GoPro version) and all you have to do is attach it to your DSLR’s hot shoe or the GoPro Hero port. With a built-in motion detector, it records all your camera jitters and movements, rather than guesstimating them afterwards. And using that info, it can, in theory, make everything perfectly smooth.
I tried the SteadXP with both the Sony A7S and the A7S II, using the 28-70mm Sony FE kit and Sony’s Zeiss 16-35 f/4 lenses. (As with any kind of handheld footage, wider-angle lenses are always better.) On the GoPro side, I used a Hero 4 (it’s not compatible with the Hero 5 and 6 at all, unfortunately). As you need a supported lens and camera body and a microphone-input jack, the only supported cameras for now are select Canon, Sony and Panasonic models, including the 5D Mark III, A6300, A7S, A7S II, GH4 and GH5.
In my SteadXP test, I replicated its most typical use — running and walking up and down the street — which is also the trickiest situation for stabilizers to handle. I also tried both 4K and 1080p video.
To use the SteadXP, you mount it on your camera’s hot shoe or cold shoe. Once you’re ready to shoot, plug it into the microphone input using the included cable (the SteadXP sends an audible data signal recorded by your camera). So you can record sound, the company also threw in a splitter.
You then set the zoom (if applicable) to a predetermined, fixed point: 16mm, 28mm or 34 mm, on the lenses I was using. You’ll need to double-check each shot to make sure the zoom doesn’t move, or the software will get confused later.

While the SteadXP is simpler to use, overall, than mechanical or electrical gimbals, there are a few things to keep in mind before shooting. First, it will crop your footage, so you’re going to lose some resolution. That means, more than usual, you must keep your subjects towards the center of the frame, and, if possible, shoot at a higher resolution than the finished video — in 4K if you want to finish in full HD, for instance.
There are a few settings you must watch, as well. For instance, stabilization on both your lens and DSLR/mirrorless body must be turned off, or the SteadXP will fight it. You also need to consider which shutter speed to use. Low shutter speeds of around 24-60 fps, often used to create a soft cinematic look, will cause blurred frames that can mess with the SteadXP.
If you’re walking or running, for example, and the shutter speed is too low, each footstep will create blur. SteadXP will smooth out the motion, sure, but you’ll have a frame that’s jarringly blurred for what looks like no reason. Using faster shutter speeds solves that, but could also give your footage a strobing look, like the D-Day beach scenes from Saving Private Ryan.
With settings fixed and when the SteadXP has a flashing green signal, you’re ready to shoot. The company recommends starting with a rapid pan, so the software has a clear reference to sync your footage.
After I shot a bunch of scenes in both full HD and 4K, I was ready to stabilize the footage using the companion app. To do that, you first upload your footage, then locate the accompanying SteadXP data file recorded on to a microSD card.
Once the footage and motion data files are synced, you pick the stabilization and crop levels for how smooth and cropped you want your footage. Those settings go hand-in-hand — if you want just a touch of stabilization to eliminate micro-jitters, you don’t have to crop as much. If you want to eliminate all your bobs and weaves, you’ll need to cut more from the edges.
The final results, as shown in the before and after videos (above), can be excellent, if you do everything right. It did require a fairly painful trial-and-error period, but I’m now confident I could get good smooth footage from the SteadXP in future. On top of that, Sony’s A7S II and A7S full-frame mirrorless cameras are known for their hideous levels of rolling shutter (aka, the jello effect), and the SteadXP software fixed that problem admirably, leaving no trace of the problem that I can see.
The best part of using SteadXP was that it let me shoot without changing too much of what I was already doing. As long as I remembered to plug it into the camera before filming and double check a few settings, I could shoot normally and deal with the stabilization afterwards. If things don’t go to plan, at least you still have the footage and can try to fix it in post-production.
The not-so-good part: To get sharp 1080p results, you have to shoot 4K video because of cropping. But you can’t have full 4K video without upscaling because it’s currently impossible using the SteadXP. The best you can do is keep cropping to a minimum, so you can save your stabilized video at as high a resolution as possible, like 2.7K, for instance. That way, when you upscale to 4K, the video will be as sharp as possible. You also have to closely watch settings like shutter speed and zoom position, and be more careful than usual with shot framing.
It’s definitely good to practice with the SteadXP for a few days before using it in the field. Also keep in mind that it is a Kickstarter product, so the usual risks apply. If neither of those are dealbreakers, the SteadXP is a relatively economical way to stabilize your shots from time to time. If you really do a lot of it, then you probably already own a Ronin or Steadicam, and if not, you should get one.

DJI hasn’t just been working on smartphone stabilizers ahead of CES — it also built its first single-handed stabilizer for SLRs and mirrorless cameras. As with the refined Osmo Mobile, the new DJI Ronin-S is all about keeping things simple in the field, and it’s set to launch in the second quarter of this year.
While the original Ronin system required users to build potentially complex rigs to mount cameras on, the Ronin-S is essentially an Osmo Mobile built to accommodate bigger cameras and lenses. Exactly how much weight the Ronin-S can handle is still a mystery, though — the company says its high-torque motors can work with “the most popular camera and lens combinations” and specifically cites compatibility with Canon’s 5D line, Panasonic’s GH-series mirrorless shooters and Sony Alpha systems. While you probably shouldn’t throw a massive telephoto lens onto a Ronin-S, DJI’s stabilization system should work fine with more standard zooms.
We haven’t tried the Ronin-S yet so we can’t vouch for how smooth it is, but DJI’s trademark three-axis gimbal has been a life-saver on shoots in the past — consider us cautiously optimistic. Actually controlling the thing seems like a pretty simple affair though: you’ll use a tiny thumbstick for panning and framing shots, while intelligent shooting features like Panorama and Hyperlapse modes have been offloaded to the Ronin’s mobile app. New to the mix are a Sport mode meant to handle frenetic motion while remaining locked onto a subject and a Push mode so you can (as DJI puts it) “adjust the pan and tilt axis by hand” while the Ronin is on. Even better, the Ronin-S is compatible with certain DJI Pro accessories in case you need additional control over your focus or want to attach other components with a cheese plate adapter.
While the idea of handling an SLR on a stick sounds a little clumsy, DJI already has some competition in Chinese rivals like Zhiyun and Feiyu, which offer seemingly similar gimbals for about $ 399. Here’s hoping we get a little hands-on time with the Ronin-S this week to see how well this thing really works.
