Emmerdale treated viewers to two episodes of the soap tonight, but left them on a major cliffhanger: will Vanessa Woofdield (Michelle Hardwick) die from the stabbing? 

Vanessa was rushed to hospital earlier in the evening after being stabbed by Lachlan White’s (Thomas Atkinson) father Donny. 

It comes as the murderer, who was sentenced to life for his crimes, rang his dad in last night’s episode and asked him to “up the ante” with the threats against Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper). 

Viewers saw Donny covering the back of the Woolpack in petrol when Vanessa, who was getting into her car with her son saw. 

Determined to put a stop to his life-threatening crime, Vanessa jumped out of the car to confront the hooded thug. 

But in a shock turn of events, Donny pulled a knife out and stabbed the vet in the lower abdomen, leaving her breathless and bleeding on the pavement. 

After throwing a lighter at the petrol, the back of the pub lit up into a blaze of amber flames and Donny took Vanessa’s car and drove off, only to realise a few miles out of the village, her son was still sitting in the back.

Scenes then saw Vanessa struggle to ring Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), but eventually the dial rang through and she told her girlfriend she was injured. 

Luckily, the paramedics arrived shortly after and whisked Vanessa off to hospital, whilst Charity went on the hunt for Johnny. 

After successfully finding Johnny unharmed in the back of the car, the pub landlord arrived at the accident and emergency unit only to be told some grave news. 

“How’s Vanessa?” she gasped, but her family just looked to one another. 

“What?” Charity demanded and Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) was first to speak up: “She’s in a bad way, she took a turn for the worse on the way in.” 

“Well where is she?” she continued, but as Paddy tried to convince her she wouldn’t be able to see her girlfriend, Charity bumped into Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) in another waiting room. 

“What’s happening,” Charity urged and Tracey replied: “They think it’s internal bleeding.” 

“They rushed her straight into surgery,” Frank Clayton (Michael Praed) added. 

“Oh this is all my fault. Ok, I need to see her, I need to let her know Johnny is alright!” Charity begged. 

“You do, but you can’t yet,” Tracey explained. 

“But she’s going to be alright Tracy?” Charity questioned, “Please tell me she’s going to be alright?” 

Tracy and Frank just looked to one another, unable to confirm whether or not Vanessa was going to pull through. 

Have they been told by doctors Vanessa has a slim chance of survival and they are saving Charity from any worry until they know for definite whether or not Vanessa is going to live?

Three people, including a police officer, have been injured in a stabbing incident at a tram stop in Manchester, England on New Year’s Eve. The station is closed for a police investigation. The suspect has been arrested.

The incident took place around 9 pm local time, according to reporters at the scene. British Transport Police of Greater Manchester confirmed only that a male suspect is under arrest.

One of the witnesses spoke of an attacker using a “long kitchen knife.”

There was no word on the perpetrator’s motive or the identity of the victims. Local media reported one man and one woman were injured, as well as a police officer who suffered a shoulder wound.

Victoria Station serves both the railway and the local Metrolink tram network, which transports millions across seven lines and 93 stops.

Working in the Antarctic can be bad enough without someone spoiling your book endings and insulting you over vodka. One Russian explorer stabbed another at a remote polar outpost, and media is abuzz with rumors and opinions.

Antarctic cold, months-long shifts, a small group of people and liters of vodka – with conditions like that, one wonders why a knife attack hadn’t happen at the Bellingshausen research station before. We spoke to mental health professionals to find out what could lead to the bloody brawl and what could have been done to prevent it.

Antarctic attack

In early October, two co-workers at the Bellingshausen station, a Russian research outpost in the Antarctic, got into a fight. It ended with the 54-year-old electrician Sergey Savitsky stabbing welder Oleg Beloguzov, 52, in the chest. Beloguzov survived and was urgently taken to Chile for treatment. The remorseful Savitsky surrendered without a fight and was sent back to St. Petersburg to await trial for attempted manslaughter, where he was placed under house arrest.

This is the first time ever an incident of the kind has happened at a Soviet or Russian Antarctic research station, says deputy director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institue, which governs Bellingshausen. He refused to talk about possible reasons, only saying the two showed no animosity before and barely ever encountered each other during work.

Any confirmed details are hard to come by. What most reports agree on, though, is that both men were habitually drinking – alcohol is legal and said to be abundant at the station. The victim and the perpetrator had worked several shifts at the Bellingshausen before, including one of them together.

The exact motive is the most speculated part. One version goes that Beloguzov mocked Savistsky by offering to pay him to dance on the table. Another is that Beloguzov kept spoiling the endings of books Savitsky was reading.

Vodka on ice

While most accounts agree that booze was involved in the altercation, alcohol at a polar station isn’t necessarily a bad idea, says psychiatrist and addiction specialist Sergey Nurislamov.

For polar explorers to abstain is nonsense.

You need alcohol for warmth, if nothing else, Nurislamov believes. That said, safeguards should be in place to prevent addiction and resulting physical impairment. It can be as simple as using breathalyzers and Skype.

“You don’t even have to send an addiction therapist to the South Pole. It’s enough if they set up the equipment and ask the station’s crew to use a breathalyzer on camera.”

Psychologist, therapist, and sociologist Lyudmila Polyanova begs to differ.

Alcohol is never a good idea.

Booze diminishes your self-control – and multiplied by pre-existing tensions and harsh conditions, “qualities resurface that could be unexpected for the person themselves.” Then, it’s a stabbing waiting to happen.

It could be book spoilers – or anything else

If Savitsky really stabbed Beloguzov over spoiled book endings – it was likely just the straw that broke the camel’s back in an already simmering situation.

If they had a conflict, anything could be the trigger. It could be silent treatment, it could be spoilers, or it one could be taking the other’s favorite cup.

It’s all a matter of conflict and provocation, Polyanova says.

Hidden tension

The two had been to Bellingshausen together before, and no-one appears to have noticed any tension between them – and likely they didn’t see it coming, either, Polyanova believes.

“There can be internal conflicts that accumulate, not understood by even the participants themselves – it’s an unconscious process.”

It’s not unlike marriage, Nurislamov says.

“Sometimes tension wells up. With married couples, nobody notices it either, they live together for 20 years and then a household fight can lead to murder.”

A therapist could help – or become a victim

Throughout the years, there hasn’t been a practice of sending a therapist along with Antarctic exploration crews. Had there been one at the Bellingshausen, they could help – or get stabbed themselves.

“A psychologist in an isolated environment is a human like anyone else,” Polyanova says. “He is interacting with the rest of the group. He can have his own conflicts. This calls for a systemic approach… if we’re talking about psychological help, this psychologist must receive it as well.”

Since the Soviet days of polar exploration, the state’s approach has changed, and the work of Antarctic researchers is now seen as routine, Nurislamov says. But the conditions are still exceptional, and still call for teams of specialists to oversee the remote, isolated crews.

“There doesn’t have to a dozen professionals sitting there at the station. With modern communications, the specialists can remain hundreds or thousands of kilometers away.”

At least four people have been hospitalized with gunshot and stabbing wounds in the Swedish town of Helsingborg following an alleged ‘attempted murder’ which police are, for now, hesitant to definitively link to organized crime.

The incident unfolded at about 8pm just steps away from the Gustav Adolf Church in the center of the city. When police arrived at the scene they discovered four people injured.

“They had shot injuries as well as a stabbing injury,” police spokesman Fredrik Bratt told local news outlets. “They were taken to hospital in ambulance, police cars and private transport.”

Three of the males, all in their 20s, suffered serious injuries, while the fourth was slightly injured, in an incident that is, for now, being classified as an attempted murder.

The circumstances are currently being investigated. So far police have failed to detain any suspects in the case, as they continue to seek witnesses and any relevant information related to the violence that occurred.

While an increase in gang-related violence has been witnessed in recent years in Helsingborg, the police say that it is “too early” to reach conclusions about the latest case. Records released by Swedish Police in December 2017 reveal there were a total of 306 shooting incidents last year, resulting in 41 deaths. The majority of the fatal incidents occurred in the capital, Stockholm.

A man was killed and two women were injured in a stabbing attack on Japan’s bullet train on Saturday night. The attack occurred at about 9:50 pm, soon after the Tokaido Shinkansen line train left Tokyo Station. Ichiro Kojima was arrested when police stormed the train after it made an emergency stop at Odawara Station, west of Tokyo. The 22-year-old told police he carried out the attack because he was frustrated, and said he randomly attacked the victims.

A woman who stabbed her sister to death while having an affair with her husband has been jailed for a minimum of 22 years.

Sabah Khan, 27, of Overstone Road in Luton, was jailed after admitting to stabbing her elder sister Saima Khan, 34, who she lived with, on May 23 last year.

Sabah was babysitting her sister’s four children when she lured Saima into returning home from work by messaging her saying one of her kids was crying. The attacker turned off the lights in the house for her sister’s arrival before she carried out a “vicious and sustained” attack.

The Old Bailey heard the defendant, whose internet search history included “hiring a hitman for £200,” left Khan with 68 different injuries. During the frenzied attack, the eldest of the victim’s children is reported to have cried out from upstairs, “auntie are you killing a mouse?”

Judge Christopher Moss said Sabah had been in a sexual relationship with her sister’s husband Hefeez Rehman for four years, and called the eight-minute attack “astonishingly brutal.”

Her internet history shows her browsing pages like “venomous snakes for sale,” “how to poison someone” and “16 steps to kill someone and not get caught.” Sabah had also reached out to a “black magic priest” in Pakistan who she had paid £5,000 (US$ 6,580) to kill her sister “by remote control.”

Detective Chief Inspector Adam Gallop, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit, called Sabah Khan “a cold, calculated evil killer.”

“She killed her sister because she was bitter and jealous of her sister’s life,” he said, adding: “She wanted her life, her husband and her children. Rather than that she’s spending a long time in prison.”

Rehman’s statement said he regrets his affair every day. “I have four beautiful children but I have lost my world and I cry every day. Saima was there for all four children. She did everything,” he added.

At least three worshipers have been stabbed after a knife-wielding man stormed a Birmingham church during service, local media report, adding that the suspect has been arrested.

The incident took place at the New Jerusalem Apostolic Church at 10:50am, according to West Midlands Police. It’s unclear if the stabbing occured inside the church or on the grounds.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

One of the victims, a 33-year-old man, has been taken to the hospital in stable condition.

“Early indications suggest that the offender and victim knew each other and that this was a targeted attack,” a police spokesperson said.

The church minister told The Birmingham Mail that three people were injured in the attack.

Minister Kevin Hutchinson described how a man wielding a “large kitchen knife” interrupted Sunday service, but was challenged by at least three churchgoers who were injured by the attacker.

They managed to detain him until police arrived, Hutchinson added.

(AP) — Finnish police say a stabbing in the western Finland city of Turku that killed two people and wounded eight is being investigated as murder with possible terrorist intent.

The National Bureau of Investigation, which is heading the investigation, says Saturday that those killed in the attack a day earlier are Finnish citizens, while the wounded include one Italian national and two Swedes.

Police said Saturday they have identified the suspect, an 18-year-old Moroccan citizen, but did not release his name.

The fatal stabbing attack that took place in the Finnish city of Turku on Friday is being investigated as a terrorist incident, police confirmed to local media, identifying the suspect as an 18-year-old Moroccan citizen.

The information was released by Yle national broadcaster. 

Two people were killed and six injured in the stabbing attack. Police shot and injured the suspect who is now being treated in hospital.

Two of those stabbed remain in intensive care, Yle reported.
