A sellsword’s loyalty is always up for grabs — It’s right there in the name! But over the past few seasons, Game of Thrones mercenary Bronn has seemed to settle into (and maybe even enjoy?) his role of Jaime Lannister’s right-hand man and de facto confidante. However, just because Bronn’s been riding with a lion for a while doesn’t mean he won’t entertain other offers, portrayer Jerome Flynn tells TVLine. “There’s reasons he’s attached to Jaime,” the actor says, but those reasons don’t necessarily include affection or loyalty. “He still hasn’t got his payoff, the castle and the wife and everything.” Ah yes, Bronn’s payoff. Longtime viewers of the HBO series will recall that Jaime once promised the hardscrabble knight a stately home and a woman, a debt that Bronn has tried to collect several times over the past few seasons… with little success. When you consider that if Jaime dies, the deal likely does, too, it puts Bronn’s heroic measures after the Loot Train Battle in a new light, doesn’t it? So as we head into Season 8, Flynn adds, Jaime better not get too complacent about the soldier of fortune’s support. “I think he’d take a good offer, sure,” he says. Unless, of course, Bronn somehow got his castle off-screen during the long hiatus between Seasons 7 and 8? “You got it,” Flynn says, laughing as he paints the scene. “Jaime’s serving tea. He’s got a thing going with Daenerys. The White Walkers have retreated, and that’s it. Whoops! Gave it away.” Clayton Hibbs (played by Callum Harrison) will plunge a knife through Shona Ramsey’s (Julia Goulding) stomach in a terrifying episode of Coronation Street. The convict, who previously killed Kylie Platt, will take his own mother hostage after staging a jail break. While David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) flees Weatherfield with his children to avoid the killer, Clayton will kidnap his girlfriend Shona. ITV viewers will see Shona try and convince her son to turn himself in, but when he finally trusts her she makes a run for it. Furious she has betrayed him and worried about what will happen next, Clayton stabs her as she tries to escape. At the end of the scene, Shona is covered in blood and laying on the ground. Will Shona succumb to her injuries? Clayton has already killed once, so what’s another notch to his belt. Discussing the dramatic episode, actor Callum, who plays the murderer, said Clayton is “scared” when Shona turns her back on him. “She tries to get through to him and in the end, she gets through to him, and then she betrays him by making a run for it,” he told The Sun. “He takes her hostage and they share an intimate moment, they share a hug and she thinks she’s got through to him so Clayton drops the knife.” Continuing, he added: “Then a little thing happens and she makes a run for it and that’s when he’s like, ‘No way, you’ve betrayed me’. “This is unbelievable, really shocked, he can’t believe it, now he’s even more scared, she really got into his head at this point and he’s just like no way have you betrayed me.” The 20-year-old soap star went on to explain how the cast filmed the dark scenes at an old mansion. He revealed how the scenery made the shoot feel real and helped him embody his character’s wicked traits. However, he admitted the area was “disgusting” and “really spooky”. He spilled: “When we were filming the scene, the scenery really helped when we were filming because it felt like I’d genuinely took her away and kidnapped her. “Honestly, it was a disgusting place, but it was really good like, it was amazing to do it. It is a really spooky place, the place where we filmed it was on Most Haunted.” Callum’s on-screen persona is best known for murdering David’s wife and mother of his child, Kylie, in 2016. The thug stabbed her in the chest as she tried to help Gemma, who was being assaulted by the teen at the time. Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Capturing carbon emissions before they enter the atmosphere is a white whale for the fossil fuel industry.
In theory, if a power plant or a factory could easily eliminate carbon emissions by filtering them out of flue gas, then the plant would be able to pursue business as usual with some simple retrofits—no threat of future regulations mandating lower emissions, no push to switch to completely new technologies.
The problem is that carbon capture is energy-intensive and expensive, it doesn’t capture all the carbon dioxide being released, and it’s not always clear what to do with the gas after it’s captured. (The current best option is to find underground caverns in which the carbon can be stored, or sell the CO2 to older oil fields for enhanced oil recovery.)

]]>Klaus-Peter Kruemmling, a reporter working with Naumburger Tageblatt, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, his newspaper reported on Tuesday. The 59-year old has just finished shopping at his local Rewe supermarket on Friday evening when the brawl started.
While heading for his car, the reporter came across three youngsters – and one of them allegedly spat at him and gestured with his middle finger. Insulted by the obscene gesture, Kruemmling confronted the trio about their behavior near the pedestrian crossing – and this is where the brazen attack happened.
One of the teenagers stabbed the journalist in the stomach, while another performed the Nazi salute, local media reported, citing police. It took some time before Kruemmling realized that he had been stabbed with a knife. “Only later in the car did I notice that my stomach was wet and everything turned red,” he told the Naumburger by phone.
The reporter returned home and called the police before he was taken to hospital. Kruemmling narrowly escaped death, it seems – the paper reported that he sustained a 6cm-deep wound but, fortunately, it did not prove to be life-threatening.
Naumburg, home to some 30,000 people, is located in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. Germany’s east has recently seen a wave of far-right demonstrations triggered by the killing of a 35-year-old German man who was fatally stabbed in the town of Chemnitz.
Germany has seen a sharp rise in the number of violent attacks on journalists throughout the 2018, according to a latest survey by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF).
It said that a total of 28 journalists have suffered 22 verified physical assaults during 2018, while they were photographing, filming, or holding cameras during demonstrations or events.

Alameda County police have arrested a knife-wielding man who reportedly attacked congressional candidate Rudy Peters with a switchblade after making “disparaging remarks” about the GOP.
The suspect in the assault on Peters, who was only referred to as “a political candidate for a local congressional seat” in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office report, has been identified as Farzad Fazel, 35.
The incident unfolded on Sunday as Peters, who is vying to represent California’s 15th congressional district in the House of Representatives, was visiting the Castro Valley Fall Festival. Police was alerted to the attack in one of the vendor booths at about 3:45 pm. As officers rushed to the scene, the alleged stabber had already fled.
Citing accounts by eyewitnesses, police say that Fazel had been leveling “disparaging remarks” at Peters over his political affiliation and bashing other Republican officials
A verbal argument preceded a physical altercation, during which the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and attempted to thrust it into Peters. According to police, “no serious injuries” have resulted from the incident. The outcome of the brawl might have been worse had the switchblade not malfunctioned.
Fazel was on a run not for long and was located and apprehended “a short time later” with the switchblade in his possession. He was taken into custody and charged with felony assault, criminal threat, brandishing a weapon and possession of a knife.
Peters is running against Eric Swalwell, the Democrat who currently represents the district. Swalwell praised the police for their swift action while denouncing the attack.
“I’m glad to hear Mr. Peters is okay. But it’s NEVER okay to use violence to settle political disagreements (or any disagreement),” Swalwell tweeted after the news of Fazel’s capture have surfaced.
On Sunday, my opponent @PetersCongress was attacked at his campaign booth in Castro Valley. I’m glad to hear Mr. Peters is okay. But it’s NEVER okay to use violence to settle political disagreements (or any disagreement). Fortunately, @ACSOSheriffs arrested the suspect.

Local news outlets have reported on the attack and the arrest, but they have largely flown under the radar of national media, with a few exceptions.
Another violent Leftist tries to hurt a Republican. Can you even imagine how many “Rising Tide of Republican Violence” headlines we’d have if people on the Right were so routinely violent? https://t.co/KNUNSUiGqE

The attempted stabbing comes as political sentiment in the US is growing increasingly partisan ahead of the midterm elections in November. Last month, the authorities arrested several people for making death threats to Republican lawmakers. One of those threatened was Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana), who was shot and seriously wounded last year when an angry Democrat attacked Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice.
In July, a man was arrested for threatening to “assault and murder” Republican Congresswoman Diane Black, running for governor in Tennessee.

Easton, from Thornaby, Teesside, inflicted the fatal wound while at his friend’s parents on August 23. According to Teesside Live, assistant coroner Karin Welsh said: “While in the kitchen, he took hold a knife to demonstrate it was stab-proof and sadly realized it wasn’t the case.”
Easton, who was described by his friends as “one-of-a-kind”, was rushed to the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton with a single stab to the chest.
“Despite the best efforts of the medical professionals, they were unable to save him,” Welsh said.
Teesside Crown Court heard the case had been investigated but no further action had been taken. Detective Superintendent Ted Butcher, from Cleveland Police’s major investigation team, said all witnesses accounts matched with each other and the relevant evidence and toxicology results.
He said that while Easton had indeed had some “issues” in the past, they had appeared to settle down and that he had fallen victim of a “boisterous act.”
Easton’s mother Alison Price claimed it would have been impossible for her son to wound himself intentionally.
Price told the hearing: “It’s more possible if it was bravado, showing off in front of lads, but where a mother and a young girl were, it’s out of character for him. I can’t absorb it.”

Jo Nesbo has updated Macbeth to the 1970s
MACBETH – Jo Nesbø (Hogarth, £20)
*****
It is no easy task taking on the greatest English writer of all time and turning one of his best-loved plays into a thriller for the modern reader. Yet this is what Jo Nesbø attempts with Macbeth and the result is an immensely enjoyable and gloriously dark novel.
Set in the 1970s the book sees Macbeth command the police SWAT team in a derelict and nameless Scottish town. Corruption rules supreme despite the best efforts of incumbent police chief Duncan and Macbeth is called upon to tackle drug lords and biker gangs against a backdrop of scheming and treachery. Civil unrest only ever seems a heartbeat away.
Macbeth’s no-nonsense approach wins the respect of his men and captures the eye of his superiors. Then a drugs raid at the port leads to a bloody gun battle and secures his promotion. His future appears assured.
But of course this is Macbeth and his “vaulting ambition” means he will never be happy with anything other than the top job. So when his partner Lady, a casino owner who has won his heart, whispers, “You have to kill Duncan”, the scene is set for a paroxysm of bloodletting.

Double Jo Nesbo
Nesbø is one of several writers to interpret Shakespeare classics for contemporary readers as part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series. He opted for Macbeth and it makes for an easy fit with his style of noir thrillers. But his Macbeth is no pale imitation of the original and nor does he treat the task as a novelty or a literary trick. Rather he takes the story – a morality play, a tragedy, a cautionary tale of overreaching oneself – and places it firmly in a framework that any modern reader can relate to.
The names of most central characters (Macbeth, Lady, Duff, Duncan, Banquo, Lennox) come straight from Stratford-upon-Avon. The plot also follows the same path. Without spoiling the story for those unfamiliar with the play, the murderers and their victims are true to the original. If anything Nesbø ups the body count.
Yet his Macbeth also deals with more modern tragedies: police corruption, drug addiction and pollution. It paints a stark picture of crime, unemployment and despair in the UK’s abandoned cities.
Perhaps at times he tries too hard to keep to the script. The three witches appear but as helpers to a demonic drugs lord. Nesbø alludes to the prophecy that Macbeth “shall never be vanquished” until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane but it feels a little forced.

Yet these are minor niggles in what is a tremendously satisfying read. Nesbø’s Macbeth stands comfortably as a thriller in its own right and would deservedly grace the bestsellers list with or without the Shakespeare connection. He has accomplished that toughest of literary feats: putting his own unmistakable mark on one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays.
Yes it is bleak, relentless and steeped in blood. It feels hopeless at times. But it is Macbeth and we would feel cheated by anything less.

Karen Hamilton used to be an air hostess
THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND by Karen Hamilton Wildfire, £12.99
*****
MEET Juliette, a woman so obsessive in her pursuit of the man who dumped her that she makes Glenn Close’s character in Fatal Attraction seem sane, approachable and easygoing.
Juliette’s ex-boyfriend Nate is an airline pilot and such is her commitment to winning him back that she trains as an air stewardess to ensure their paths cross again. She closely monitors his work rota and routinely lets herself into his flat when she knows he is away, snooping around and sleeping over when Nate’s schedule allows it. She also uses a spy app to monitor his text messages. It quickly becomes apparent that she will stop at nothing to win him back or, as she puts it: “I’m in it for the long haul.”
So when Nate acquires a new girlfriend the stakes are disturbingly high. How far will Juliette go to win back her man? Spectacularly far, it turns out.
Hamilton is a former flight attendant and The Perfect Girlfriend gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the life of an air stewardess. Her debut novel is written with a gleeful zeal that leaps off the page and its momentum comes from the reader watching and waiting to see how far Juliette will go in her ruthless, obsessive pursuit of Nate. You will be nail-bitingly terrified for him long before you meet him.
Juliette is an unforgettably monstrous character: cold, calculating and entirely lacking in empathy. Her appalling scheming made me gasp aloud as I read, although her unhinged behaviour stems from a bleak back story that feels a little at odds with this larger-than-life romp of a novel. And as the plot unspools there are times when you have to suspend disbelief.
But Juliette is such a memorable, grippingly unpredictable character that you’ll be happy to go along for the turbulent ride.

If you like your crime fiction dark this is for you
THE SMILING MAN by Joseph Knox Doubleday, £12.99
*****
If you like your crime fiction dark, gritty and contemporary, then Joseph Knox’s latest novel is for you. In Knox’s debut novel Sirens, a Waterstones Thriller Of The Month, Manchester detective Aidan Waits embarked upon an undercover investigation into a drugs gang but it rapidly spiralled out of control. So as The Smiling Man opens, Waits is in disgrace, covering the night shift with politically incorrect DI Peter Sutcliffe (the book is dripping with dark humour) and the pair become involved in a bizarre case when an unidentifiable smiling corpse is found in an abandoned city centre hotel.
Times are tough in Manchester. Prostitutes are using the hotel, there is a huge problem with the drug “spice” and rumours abound of a serial killer on the loose in the city.
At the same time an alt-right journalist is trying to blackmail a young woman with a sex video. There is also a parallel flashback storyline involving a young boy called Wally who is used as a decoy by Bateman, an unspeakably violent sadist in a relationship with his mother.
The book opens with Wally witnessing the horrific murder of an elderly couple by Bateman. Knox’s novel is hugely detailed and involving, written with style and drawing together multilayered plotlines to a satisfying conclusion. Among a colourful and believable cast of supporting characters, it is the flawed, very human Aidan Waits who forms the solid centre of the novel.
His colleagues may not like or trust him yet the reader is very much on the side of a man whose childhood in foster care means he is emotionally distant but drawn to help the vulnerable people he encounters.
I would recommend reading Sirens first for a clear understanding of DC Waits and his background. But careful reading of The Smiling Man will also take new readers on a dark and engrossing ride through the mean streets of Manchester.

A promising debut from a clearly talented writer
ONLY CHILD by Rhiannon Navin Mantle, £12.99
*****
It would be hard to find a more timely release than this compelling novel from Rhiannon Navin. It deals with the aftermath of a school shooting in America, seen through the eyes of six-year-old Zach. The book opens as he cowers in a cupboard with his teacher and the rest of his kindergarten class listening to the “pop pop pop” of gunfire.
After an agonising wait the children are rescued and reunited with their parents.
But when Zach’s mother arrives her relief at finding her young son unharmed is short-lived when she realises that her older boy is missing.
In its examination of how both a family and a community struggle to cope with such a traumatic event, Only Child feels eerily prescient in the wake of the most recent school shooting in Florida.
It is impossible not to be moved by Zach’s heartbreaking narration as he tries to navigate his new life where the adults he has always relied on start acting in ways he cannot understand.
Moving and extremely thought-provoking, this is a very promising debut from a clearly talented writer.
The gold medal in the 60kg division over India’s Laishram Devi was the first time women’s boxing was on the Commonwealth Games program.
“It’s a funny one because it will always go down in history but sometimes I don’t like to say that because no one else had an opportunity before me,” Watts said.
“But it’s definitely an amazing thing and what the gold medal really comes down to is the prize for all of the hard work and belief you instil in yourself leading into it.
“Because you have to have this resounding belief in yourself before everyone else does that it’s possible, then when you are lucky enough to have the gold medal it means all the hard work is warranted.
“It means so much to finish something that you started because the four or five fights at the Games are the fun at the end of the road after all that strenuous training.”
But from the high of Glasgow came the low of Rio two years later where Watts bowed out of her first Olympics in the first round.
“I think I’ve found out in the last month that I’m still dealing with it,” she said.
“It’s been 18 months and again, the exact same way that a win re-affirms everything for you, a loss makes you question everything because I think I worked harder going into the Olympics than the Commonwealth Games and I would have never expected to get the result I got, it was a stab to the heart.”
That result started a struggle for motivation and although she got back into training, Watts missed out on qualifying for the Gold Coast Games by 3kg.
Having moved back to Port Macquarie, she finished her university degree and has started her practical legal training, but in a sporting sense Watts feels like she’s in limbo.
“I can almost be admitted to be a practising solicitor in New South Wales but it’s like ‘do you want to go back and redeem yourself (in boxing)?’
“It plays on your mind every single day and I’m not ready to give it up, I’m only 30 and know I have a lot of potential to keep going but it’s still a struggle for motivation.”
She now trains every day out of Port Macquarie Boxing Club and had her first fight since Rio last month in a club bout which she won at 75kg in Singleton.
“It was great to get back in the ring because I forgot about the nerves before a fight and getting ready,” Watts said.
“And also the nerves that come with people’s expectations of what they’re going to see when you step in the ring. I got some positive feedback, it’s definitely not the right weight division for me, I’m carrying too much, but in the same sense it wasn’t bad to be in there and swinging the arms.
“But it was an interesting battle to contend with in my own head that the last time I fought it was for my country in front of thousands of people at an Olympic Games, and now I was going back to fight in a little civic centre in Singleton.”
Watts says she doesn’t know whether the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will stoke the fire for her to return to the top level of the sport but anything is possible.
“I can’t even tell you if I’m going to be willing to watch the Games. I will 100 per cent be committed to being behind each of the boxers and I really hope that everyone does amazingly,” she said.
“I was lucky enough to see Anja Stridsman, the 60kg representative, at the Singleton fight night and as a parting gesture I said ‘good luck mate, make sure the medal stays in Australia’ so I’ll be behind them but I’m just not sure I can watch it or not.”
Belgian prosecutors said they launched twin investigation after a knife-wielding man shouting “Allahu Akbar” attacked soldiers in Brussels. The assault is being treated as an act of terrorist.
The assailant attacked Belgian soldiers with a knife in central Brussels on Friday night, according to the Belgian authorities. The man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (‘God is great’ in Arabic) twice while carrying out the attack, according to Esther Natus, spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor’s office.
Soldiers fatally shot the attacker following a close encounter. “One of the soldiers opened fire and hit the man twice. The man later died in the hospital as a result of his injuries,” Natus added.
Later on Saturday, prosecutors announced that the first investigation will look at the incident itself, and the second inquiry will see if the soldier who shot the attacker acted appropriately, Reuters reports.
An autopsy was planned for Saturday, the prosecution service said in a statement, adding that prosecutors would make the final decision based on the results and a report by a ballistics expert.
According to the authorities, the 30-year-old man, identified as a Somali citizen, came to Belgium in 2004. Belgian Migration Minister Theo Francken said the man had been granted asylum in 2009 and obtained citizenship in 2015.
The man was not known to have any links to Islamist militancy, but had committed an act of assault and battery in February this year, prosecutors say.
The attack in central Brussels came shortly before two British police officers were attacked outside Buckingham Palace in London.
Police later said the man, in his mid-twenties, was “arrested by police after they spotted a weapon inside his car. The quick and brave actions of both officers meant that the suspect was detained very quickly,” Detective Superintendent Guy Collings said on Friday.
