  • AnandTech, a publication known for its technical analyses, has put the device against Apple’s latest iPhones, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, and Samsung’s own Galaxy S8 in a series of benchmark tests.
  • The iPhone has won in virtually every test against the newer Galaxy S9, sometimes with huge margins, but the S9 has performed worse than many other devices’ chipsets, too.
  • But Samsung suggested that the poor test results could just be down to the current software on the phone.

Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the latest entries in its flagship line of smartphones, at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress — but benchmark results are awkwardly showing the devices scoring significantly lower than many of their competitors.

Benchmarks are synthetic tests that give numeric, quantifiable results. They are generally applications programmed to make the devices’ systems-on-a-chip (SoC) run a series of tasks and determine how long it takes them to complete.

Samsung has officially unveiled its newest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Business Insider attended the company’s press conference in Barcelona, and got some time to spend hands-on with both devices.

The S9 and S9+ will go on sale March 16, but customers will be able to pre-order it this Friday (March 2).

Here are the key takeaways you should know about if you are considering buying either phone:

The design has remained virtually unchanged.

The first thing that’s immediately noticeable upon picking up a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ is just how similar they are to their predecessors.

The same 5.8- and 6.2-inch displays (for the S9 and S9+ respectively) dominate the devices’ front; an aluminum strip goes around the edges, and a glass back shimmers.

If you didn’t notice the different positioning of the fingerprint sensor — which now comfortably sits below the camera, and not next to it — or stumbled upon one of the new colours, like the “Lilac Purple,” you would really have a hard time telling a Galaxy S9 and its predecessor apart.

Samsung’s new phone seems a lot like the “s” versions of the iPhones in years past — but that’s not to say that the design has any noticeable flaws. The in-hands feel certainly remains solid.

There are some important upgrades, but many of the specs are similar too.

The similarities between the two pairs of phones — if you compare the S8 and S8+ to the S9 and S9+ respectively — don’t end there, however.

Those “infinite display” panels are still QuadHD, the screen resolution first introduced with 2015’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, and while they still look as good as ever, they fail to impress anymore.

This is not a call for 4K displays on sub-7″ displays, but a QuadHD display alone struggles to add anything that previous smartphones didn’t have, and therefore the very first impression can’t be “wow.”

Samsung, in particular, has consistently had some of the very best panels on the market, so the slight improvements in brightness and colour accuracy of the S9’s get lost in the bulk of upgrades the Galaxy S8 already brought last year.

The S9 also retains the 3000mAh battery its predecessor had (3500mAh for the S8+/S9+), 64GB of storage, and 4GB of RAM for the base model — the S9+ has 6GB, but the differences in performance were unnoticeable in the brief stress test I made.

The most notable S9 and S9+ upgrades are in the processor, which is now the Snapdragon 845, the Note 8’s iris scanner, which can be used for face unlocking, and a new pair of stereo speakers, tuned by AKG.

Overall, however, much of last year’s Galaxy S8 has made its way to this year’s device, which is a slight refinement and not a rethinking of the Galaxy S brand.

There are some important spec differences between the two models.

Perhaps the biggest difference is not between the old and the new models, but between their respective gaps.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were almost identical last year, whereas 2018’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ differ from each other more significantly.

(This might also translate in a larger price difference, but Samsung has not shared final details on pricing yet.)

There are four distinctions: Screen, battery, RAM, and camera.

The screen is 0.4 inches larger or the S9+, which is a nice real estate bump considering that the difference in size is negligible, at least in hands.

I use an iPhone X as my daily driver, which is a 5.8-inch device, and I still felt that the slightly larger S9+ got more value out of its added size than its smaller sibling.

The battery, on the other hand, is a full 500mAh larger (3000 vs 3500), which could translate in a solid battery life difference; and the extra 2GB of RAM, too, might come in handy as apps get bigger and the device’s battery wears off over time.

But the major difference is still the secondary 12MP telephoto camera, which is only present on the larger S9+.

The dual-lens system is borrowed from last year’s Galaxy Note 8, and Samsung again uses it to offer 2x zoom photos without quality loss and some bokeh effects to enhance portrait mode pictures.

ZDNet reports that Rhee was also instrumental in Samsung’s acquisition of Joyent, a US-based cloud-focused firm that would help in the development of software services at the company, whose “reliance and need” on the cloud was “ever-growing.”

1. Some Facebook ex-staffers have criticised the company’s decision to shift towards news five years ago. The criticism comes after Facebook’s decision of favouring friends’ posts in the News Feed again, after two years of steady user engagement decline.

2. Google decided to ban searches for “gorillas” and similar words in Google Photos after it displayed black people in some instances back in 2015. The company can’t unblock those specific searches as the computer vision technology is still limited and prone to errors.

3. Japanese telecommunication giant SoftBank agreed to invest €460 million (£408 million) in German online car dealer Auto1, which is now at a €2.9 billion (£2.6 billion) valuation. Half of the investment will be made through the issuing of new shares.

4. A Microsoft VP said that the company is playing the long game with its digital assistant, Cortana. The firm’s virtual helper was not a highlight at the latest Consumer Electronics Show (CES), as opposed to those from Google (Assistant) and Amazon (Alexa).

5. A new survey from EPR and Edison Research found out that 16% of American households now own a smart speaker, up 128% from last year. 30% of owners say that smart speakers are replacing the time they spend with TV.

6. Apple apologised to non-Chinese users who erroneously received an email that said their iCloud data would be moved to servers based in China. Apple is moving data to Chinese servers only for users whose ID’s country is set to China, to comply with new government regulations.

7. A huge number of Chinese-born tech workers are moving back to their home country. New reports have found that China offers them better and faster salary growth, as well as the chance to work with higher volumes of meaningful data.

8. Cryptocurrency exchange site Kraken came back online on Saturday after over two days of downtime. The people behind the infrastructure upgrade initially said it would only take two hours.

9. A judge in Shenzen, China, ruled that Samsung infringed one of Huawei’s patents on wireless communications. The judge ordered that the Korean company must stop selling products that use the infringed patent’s technology in China.

10. Amazon increased its support for Alexa and Prime Video for TV makers at CES, but there were no TVs using the company’s Fire TV OS (operating system). The show, however, featured a number of TVs running other firms’ OSes, such as Google’s and Roku’s.

Strong memory chip earnings propelled tech giant Samsung Electronics to its best quarterly profit in more than three years, the South Korean firm said on Thursday as it announced its first-quarter results.

Samsung said in a regulatory filing that its January-March operating profit was 9.9 trillion won ($ 8.75 billion), compared with 9.9 trillion won it estimated earlier in April. That means the results were in line with expectations.

The company’s revenues rose 2% to 50.5 trillion won ($ 44.2 billion), also in line with its earlier estimate.

The solid set of results come after a turbulent period for Samsung.

Last October, the company made headlines after a number of its Galaxy Note 7 devices overheated and caught fire. The flagship smartphone was scrapped as a result of the fiasco.

Samsung heir Lee-Jae Yong is also embroiled in a corruption scandal in South Korea that goes right to the top of the highest levels of government. He has been arrested and charged with bribery and embezzlement. He denies all charges.

Samsung’s new flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S8, was not released during this period so it’s hard to say how strong sales of the device are.

China’s FX reserves fall below $ 3 trillion. China’s foreign exchange reserves slumped to $ 2.998 trillion in January, hitting their lowest level in almost six years, Reuters reports, citing People’s Bank of China data.

The IMF’s annual review of Greece has concluded. The International Monetary Fund’s annual review of Greece found that economic growth is likely to remain below 1% and that the debt-burdened country will likely meet the preferred fiscal surplus target of most IMF directors, Reuters says. Greece’s 2-year yield is higher by 75bps @ 9.29%

The Reserve Bank of Australia thinks growth will pick up.Australia’s central bank held its key interest rate unchanged at 1.50% on Tuesday and noted, “A return to reasonable growth is expected in the December quarter.” The Australian dollar is weaker by 0.6% at .7613 versus the dollar.

The head of New Zealand’s central bank won’t seek a new term. Graeme Wheeler announced on Tuesday that he won’t seek a second five-year term when his current term ends on September 26. “It was my intention, when I was appointed, to serve one term, and then to take on governance roles,” Wheeler said in a statement released by the RBNZ.

Apple pulled ahead of Samsung in smartphone shipments. Apple shipped 78.3 million units in the fourth quarter, surpassing Samsung for the first time in five years. Samsung shipped 77.5 million units, a number that was impacted by “Batterygate,” which cost it $ 3 billion in lost sales.

Fitbit is facing a criminal probe. The wearable device maker is being accused by its rival, Jawbone, of stealing trade secrets, Bloomberg reports.

Teva Pharmaceutical’s CEO steps down. Chief Executive Erez Vigodman announced on Monday that he is resigning effective immediately. He is being replaced on an interim basis by Yitzhak Peterburg, who has served as Teva’s chairman of the board.

BNP Paribas is planning a transformation. The French bank plans to invest €3 billion ($ 3.2 billion) over the next three years to “build the bank of the future by continuing to grow the businesses and implementing an ambitious programme of digital transformation, new customer experience, and cost savings.”

Earnings reporting picks back up. General Motors and Michael Kors are among the names reporting ahead of the opening bell while Buffalo Wild Wings, Walt Disney, and Yum China highlight the names releasing their quarterly results after markets close.

US economic data is moderate. The trade balance will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET before JOLTS Job Openings and consumer credit cross the wires at 10 a.m. ET and 3 p.m. ET, respectively. The US 10-year yield is higher by 1 basis point at 2.42%.
