Based on these spy shots, it appears Porsche is getting very close to releasing the third installment of the Boxster Spyder, this time bearing the 718 moniker. The car shown above has effectively no camouflage, and it doesn’t appear to have any faux panels or temporary lighting. Being the follow-up to the non-718 Boxster, it also has a number of aesthetic changes.

Up front, the 718 Boxster Spyder features the same front bumper as the GTS model. It’s a slightly more aggressive version of the stock bumper, and it’s available as an option on plain and S Boxsters. It also features the LED headlights that are optional on lower-trim Boxsters.

Moving around the side, nothing appears to have changed, and the engine covering still has the signature double humps leading up to the seats. Those humps look like they may be slightly lower and less pronounced than on the previous model. It seems there will even still be “Spyder” badges in the black sections around the latches for the canopy, though on this prototype tape has been placed on them. The top also appears to be the same sort of multi-step type found on the last model.

The biggest change is actually at the rear, specifically with the rear bumper. The diffuser has large outlets, and there aren’t many of them. This is also the first Boxster Spyder, and the only version of the 718, to have the exhaust outlets set apart from each other. On all other 718 models, the tips are mounted in the center, and if there’s more than one, they’re immediately next to each other. Also, being a 718 Boxster, this Spyder has the dark gray taillights that partially blend into the spoiler with the black slats.

One of the questions surrounding the new 718 Boxster Spyder is what will power it. The 718 line moved to turbocharged flat-four engines, but that’s no guarantee the Spyder will use one of those engines. The reason is that the last Spyder used a version of the 911 Carrera S naturally aspirated flat-six. That engine was also shared with the Cayman GT4, which made slightly more horsepower. That presents the possibility of the current Carrera S turbo flat-six. But because the upcoming 718 Cayman GT4 will stay naturally aspirated, and so likely will use an older 911 engine, it’s possible the 718 Boxster Spyder will share that engine, perhaps with less horsepower. Considering how close this car looks to being production-ready, we would expect to see a fully revealed model within a year.

Monterey Car Week is upon us, and to celebrate, Audi is bringing a slew of performance vehicles for display. The new R8 V10 Plus Spyder, which will be making its U.S. debut, will be the centerpiece, but it will vie for attention with the Audi Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak, the R8 LMS GT3 and GT4, and the RS5.

Having made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. earlier this year, the R8 V10 Plus Spyder will roll into the States for the first time in its appropriate habitat, the California coast. It will be at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, one of the few places in the world where it will not come close to being the rarest and most expensive vehicle on the field. But that doesn’t take away from how special it is.

Like the V10 Plus coupe, the Spyder boasts 610 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, which is 70 more horsepower and 15 more lb-ft of torque than the regular V10 Spyder. Audi claims it can bolt from zero to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and top out at 204 mph. In our test with the V10 Spyder, however, with the help of Audi’s brilliant seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel-drive system, we saw zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds, so it would not be surprising to see this model kiss 3.0.

Like its slightly lower-powered brother, the V10 Plus Spyder is a softtop; the top’s magnesium and aluminum frame weighs only 97 pounds total and only takes 20 seconds to open or close. Distinguishing the Plus are “racing shell” bucket seats, a carbon-fiber fixed rear wing, carbon-ceramic brakes, 19-inch light-alloy forged wheels, and a sport exhaust system with black outlets. That’s good news all around, except for perhaps your hairdo.

As a quick refresher, we saw much more covered-up spy shots a while back. It revealed that the Performante coupe’s transparent engine cover would be replaced by an opaque one and a cowl to hide the roof when it’s down. That’s borne out here, and since the top’s down in these new photos, you get a great look at the clean lines of the cowl.

Like the coupe, it’ll pack a 630 horsepower V10 and Lamborghini’s incredible Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva system. That’s Lambo-speak for active aero, and it’s what let the coupe lap the ‘Ring in under 7 minutes. The Spyder should be packing that system too, although it’s likely to be heavier and slightly less slippery than its tin-top cousin.

The McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder, and Ferrari LaFerrari, are arguably the three greatest hypercars yet. Of course, their extremely limited production meant that some ultra-wealthy individuals may have missed out on picking one up. In fact, to get a LaFerrari, you needed to have owned a certain number of Ferraris, and be in good graces with the company. However, if there are any super-rich car enthusiasts reading this right now, your chance to buy one or all of these three supercars is coming up next month at the RM Sotheby’s Villa Erba auction in Italy. It will occur on May 27, and feature a McLarenP1 GTR, Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach, and Ferrari LaFerrari.

2016 McLaren P1 GTR

McLaren fans, will RM Sotheby’s won’t offering just any McLaren P1, but rather the hardcore, track-prepped GTR variant. In fact, the GTR is so hardcore that it isn’t legal for the street. This particular version went to specialist Lanzante to be converted for road use. Take note that it’s only road legal in the UK, and it may not meet laws for other countries. However, that’s still more than most GTRs can boast, and if you have the money for this, you shouldn’t have any issue taking it to the UK to unleash the P1 GTR’s 986 horsepower on public roads. This car could use some driving, too, as it only has about 223 miles on it, some of which included just one track event. RM Sotheby’s expects this McLaren to go for between $ 3.4 million and $ 3.85 million.

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach

The Porsche 918 Spyder going up for auction is a special one as well. The first difference you’ll notice is that it has been painted a custom color called “Arrow Blue,” a hue specially mixed up as part of Porsche’s custom paint service. It also features the lightweight Weissach package, which loses a few extra pounds by replacing an assortment of parts for lighter components. Among them are magnesium wheels and wheel bearings, carbon fiber roof, windshield frame, rear fenders, and rear view mirrors, and even titanium-backed brake pads. According to RM Sotheby’s those pads have been replaced with fresh 918-spec pieces. The previous owner clearly enjoyed his or her 918, as it has just over 6,800 miles. In case you’re interested in a well-loved 918, the auction house expects it to sell for just under $ 1.3 million to about $ 1.5 million.

2014 Ferrari LaFerrari

Unlike the previous two hypercars, the LaFerrari on offer is just a run-of-the-mill LaFerrari, which isn’t really run-of-the-mill, but we digress. It does have one important bragging point, and that’s its astonishingly low mileage: about 111 miles. For a collector, this is a chance to own a virtually new LaFerrari, and for a driver, it’s a chance to put some miles on this criminally underdriven machine. Aside from the miles, this LaFerrari is painted classic Ferrari red, with a black and red interior, and RM Sotheby’s says it also comes with raisable front suspension. The auction company also says telemetry and camera equipment are included, which likely hasn’t been used much, if at all. As you can see from the photos, it also comes with an equally Ferrari red fitted car cover. RM Sotheby’s expects this LaFerrari to come between the Porsche and McLaren in price, somewhere between $ 2.8 million and $ 3.4 million.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we got our very first glimpse of the long-awaited BMW i8 Spyder. It was out testing with its targa-style top removed. Now we have even better shots of the car with a removable top in place.

That top happens to be a fabric covered piece that fills the space between the windshield header and the seat cowls. It also helps retain the i8‘s futuristic supercar lines, though the fabric does look a bit last century. We imagine this could be a temporary top that can be stowed in the car, while another, possibly glass, roof could also be installed for a more finished design.

Aside from the top, everything else looks to be standard i8 on this car. The body generally remains the same, and there don’t appear to be any major updates to the lights, grilles, or other easily updated body panels. The only major difference seems to be some extra slats in the hood extractor vent. We expect the production vehicle to be revealed soon, and the car is due to start production next year.
